P
arks and Recreational
Services, through
Alignment 2000, are
responsible for the
provision of services
relative to the design,
operation and
programming of park and
recreational facilities and
correspondingly, the
maintenance of these
facilities. The services
provided include:
Community Recreation
Services, whose purpose is
to provide quality,
affordable and accessible
recreation and leisure
programs, services and
facilities through
programming and
community development.
It recognizes community
strengths and provides
assistance to meet the
recreation needs of
communities. This enables
communities to create
partnerships, achieve selfsufficiency
and increase
citizen involvement and
responsibility; Recreation
Facilities Services are
accountable for the
planning and provision of
the Parks and Recreation
Facility System. This
includes municipallyowned
parks, trails and
open spaces, as well as
community centres and
major indoor facilities
provided through
management agreements;
and Parks and Open
Spaces are responsible for
the administration and
maintenance of the
municipal parks system,
athletic fields, sport
courts, playgrounds,
several beaches, trails,
several public open spaces,
municipal cemeteries,
municipal urban forest
program and horticulture
support for the park system.
Accomplishments
Parks System
Halifax Regional
Municipality has one of
the largest and most
diverse municipal parks
system in all of Canada.
Land Acquisitions
In partnership with
Real Estate Services, two
important land
acquisitions were
completed on Deadman’s
Island and the Jack Lake
lands.
