PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE 

irst, let me wish everyone a healthy and joyous 

holiday season. I would like to focus my message 

this month on an issue that revolves around the safety 

of our students. As you know, safety is always our 

primary concern. Our concerns are especially 

heightened when it comes to our students. We have 

identified a problem that needs to be addressed 

because we believe that our students’ safety is 

compromised. In the morning, many parents drop 

their children off in front of the building. Long lines 

of cars block the front entrance because many parents 

choose not to move their cars away from the front 

door entrance to the building. Students exit the cars 

at different rates, and impatient drivers scoot around 

the cars anxious to leave the lot. Curbside drivers 

move out, sometimes without looking, and we have 

witnessed near misses almost on a daily basis. 

Drivers are sometimes sharp with staff manning the 

platform, and they are often reluctant to move their 

cars up a safe distance when they are asked. You can 

guess at the rest of the scenario, and we hope you 

will be more sympathetic to our attempts to correct 

this situation. 

Here’s what we are asking you to do if you drop 

your children off in the morning: 

• Move your car as far forward, away from the 

main entrance, as you can so that you avoid 

blocking the entrance of the building. It is 

not harmful for your child to have to walk a 

short distance to get into the building. 

• Be wary of other drivers as they pass you. 

Do not cut into the lot without checking 

incoming traffic. 

• Please be patient with staff members who are 

trying to help maintain order on the platform 

and preserve the safety of the children in the 

building. Cooperate when they ask that you 

move forward. 

If we follow this simple plan, we can ensure that 

all our students and staff will remain safe.

e hope everyone had a wonderful 

Thanksgiving and is enjoying their holiday 

season. We also want to wish everyone a 

healthy and happy New Year. 

This year’s Holiday Boutique was a great success. 

We had lots of fun and fashionable merchandise for 

students to purchase. Thank you to all the volunteers 

who gave their time to work at the Boutique, and 

special thanks to Arlene Goldman, Frank Pangal 

and Marissa Princiotta for all their hard work. 

The Candlewood PTA would like to thank those 

students who participated in Reflections 2004-2005: 

“A Different Kind of Hero”. Entries from the 

following artists have been selected to go on to the 

next level of judging at the Suffolk Region PTA 

Showcase: Literature – Grace An, Bryce Kristall, 

Adam Weinzimer; Musical Composition – 

Gabrielle Costa, Feroza Osmani; Visual Arts – 

John Battistelli, Farhaana Zainul. The showcase 

will be held on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Walt 

Whitman H.S. in Huntington Station.

“Abstractions” – We still have a few 

Yearbooks left…but hurry, the 

deadline for ordering is January 17 th . 

In addition, if you are interested in 

placing a personal message to your child 

and/or our graduating class in the Candlewood 

Yearbook, just go to the Candlewood page on the 

District website, click on School News, and access 

the Yearbook information. You can fill out the 

advertisement contract and mail it along with a check 

made payable to Candlewood Middle School. The 

deadline is January 4, 2005. Thank you for

eam 7-6 “Remix” Supports Our Troops! 

Team 7-6, through the Adopt-a-Platoon 

Program, has adopted six soldiers as penpals. 

The soldiers are currently serving in 

Iraq and Afghanistan. Students in Ms. 

Mjos’ English 7 class have written 

letters and collected items to send 

Thanksgiving and holiday care packages. Several of 

the soldiers have written back and sent photos. Mrs. 

Ruggiero and the Candlewood School Store 

generously donated $50.00 to help with shipping 

charges. This month, the School Store also donated 

$30.00 worth of merchandise that Mrs. DiGennaro 

is using to create a beautiful holiday basket that will 

be raffled off for $1.00 a chance. The raffle proceeds 

will be used for future care packages. The project is 

real-life letter writing at its best, and the life lessons 

learned from these brave men and women are

ovember was citizenship month 

at Candlewood. Eighth grade 

student council members began the 

month by working with sixth grade 

students during an advisory session. 

Together the students reflected on what it means to 

be a good citizen, and things they could do to 

contribute to their school and home community. In 

addition to learning more about citizenship, sixth 

grade students had the opportunity to meet and work 

with an eighth grader, and eighth grade students had 

the experience of speaking in front of a class in a 

leadership role. 

The main event for the month was student 

council’s first Citizenship Writing Contest. The 

contest was centered around the belief 

from Ancient Greece that people felt it 

was important for all people to try to 

leave Athens better than they found it. 

Students had to write an essay in which they 

explained what they could do to make Candlewood 

and their community better. Members of the eighth 

grade student council judged the essays. Winners of 

the contest were: Sixth Grade – Christina Carone, 

Gabrielle Costa, Taylor Duenas; Seventh Grade – 

Michelle Rosenhouse, Alyson Shanon; Eighth 

Grade – Jennifer Denninger, Andy Maheshwari.

ongratulations to Alyssa Sokol on being chosen 

as the 2nd place winner in the Melville Lions 

Club Peace Poster Contest. Alyssa received an 

Achievement Certificate and a check for the $100.00 

second prize. In addition, Alyssa’s poster will now 

be forwarded to the district level competition.

Ruggiero’s French class participated in the 

Suffolk County Annual French Poetry Recitation 

Contest at Stony Brook University on December 3. 

The hard work and dedication of Madame Ruggiero 

and her students certainly proved to be a worthwhile 

endeavor. The following six students placed in the 

contest: 7 th Grade – lst Place Niesha Voigt, 

3 rd Place Emily Nelkin, Honorable Mention 

Margot Cohen. 8 th Grade – lst Place

n November 23 rd , Mr. Carioscia, Mrs. 

McDermott and Mrs. Coughlin’s classes 

participated in a Thanksgiving Feast. The students 

went shopping at Waldbaums for all 

the food, and helped Mrs. Krawitz 

cook to make a delicious meal. They 

made invitations and invited 

administrators, coordinators, nurses, guidance 

counselors, behavior specialists, the psychologist, 

and their parents. What a turn out! Everyone had a 

great time eating, socializing, and eating some more. 

We wanted to give a special thanks to Mrs. Krawitz 

for all of her hard work and the love she put into our 

special feast.

omework Help for Grades 1-7 at Half Hollow 

Hills Community Library 

Honor students and Key Club members from Half 

Hollow Hills High Schools East and West will be 

available at the Dix Hills building for individual 

homework assistance. Reading to or with a student is 

also a component of this program. This free program 

will be held January 10 through April 21 on the 

following days: Mondays, 7:00-8:00 p.m., 

Wednesday and Thursdays, 4:00-5:00 p.m. (No 

sessions 2/21-2/25 & 3/21-3/25). Registration is 

required; please call Youth Services beginning 

January 3 at 421-4530, ext. 33.

to helping each student reach his/her full potential by 

creating a vigorous and positive middle school 

experience. Our students are offered a 

comprehensive academic program with many 

opportunities to develop a wide variety of interests. 

The students listed on the following pages are 

proudly recognized for outstanding academic 

achievement during the first quarter of the 2004-2005 

school year. High Honor Roll students have attained 

a grade point average of 4.0 or higher, and Honor 

Roll students have attained an average between 3.5 

and 3.99. 

In addition to our Honor Roll students, we 

would like to recognize Lindsay Berman, Aaron 

Bryant, Diamond Daye, Alexis Merlo, and 

Shanequa Wright. These students have been 

selected for our “Wall of Recognition” for displaying 

good citizenship to their fellow Candlewood students.
