Daniel Placed 4th in the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair American Psychological Assoc. - Granted student membership. Brett Harrison has been selected by MIT to attend the Summer Research Science Institute. His research topic will be in Mathematics. 20,000 juniors were invited to apply 1,200 qualified Brett was one of 50 U.S. students. Patricia Eliasinski (Marine Biology) and Rachel Goldstein (Psychology) have received the 2005 Simons Summer Research Fellowship at Stony Brook University. They will work with distinguished faculty mentors for seven weeks during the summer. The following students joined over 135,000 Latin students from all fifty states and 14 foreign countries in the American Classical League competition held in March. Introduction Level Examination: Shana Mintz, Kimberly Fry and Prane Wang who earned the Purple Ribbon of Distinction. Certificate for Outstanding Achievement: Sherrie Wohl Certificate for Achievement: Zain Ahmed Shana Mintz achieved a perfect score on the 2005 Introduction to Latin National Latin Exam. Only 533 students out of 15,500 who participated attained this distinction. Sean Colins will be awarded the SCALA Award for Artistic Merit on May 11, 2005. place wins in this Saturday's debate - L.I. Forensics at Great Neck South. With their wins, Eva<br />

and Lindsey have qualified to represent our school in the New York State Debate competition in<br />

April.<br />

The National Merit <strong>Scholar</strong>ship Corporation has selected 4 finalists in its Merit and Achievement<br />

programs. Andrew B. Greenberg and Dawn Mackey have been designated in the Merit Program.<br />

Ryan Bonaparte and Dawn Mackey are finalists in the Achievement Program. These oustanding<br />

students are being considered for financial scholarships which will be announced in March.<br />

Congratulations to the Boys Winter Track team for winning the <strong>Suffolk</strong> <strong>County</strong> Small School<br />

Team Championship. At this meet the Colts had 4 individual county champions: James Henn<br />

in the triple jump, Patrick Robak in the 600 meter run, Maurice Thomas in the high jump and<br />

Austin Walker in the 55 meter hurdles. These 4 athletes were awarded All-<strong>County</strong> Honors. Hills<br />

West also placed first in the 4 by 800 meter relay and 4 by 400 meter relay events. <strong>Athlete</strong>s on<br />

those teams included: Nejib Aminy, Alex Freed, Craig Harbeck, Ryan Hughes, Kunmi<br />

Sobowale, Pat Robak and Ryan Zillmann. Other point contributors included: Eric Cohen,<br />

Joe Quiwa, Jason Suapengco and Mark Thomas.<br />

The Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium sponsored by Adelphi University<br />

has selected Ajwad Bajwa, Dawn Mackey and David Rosenman to be presenters at their meeting<br />

which is scheduled for March 4, 2005.


Hills West Brainstormers take 2nd place in the Regional Science Bowl sponsored by the Dept. of<br />

Energy held at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Team consisted of Captain Andy Greenberg-<br />

12, Brett Harrison-11, Jeremy Kaufman-12 and David Rosenman-12.<br />

The advisor is Mr. Alan Blayne.<br />

Congratulations! David Rosenman - INTEL Semi-finalist. David was chosen from among<br />

1600 entrants representing 508 high schools in 47 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico<br />

and two overseas schools.<br />

Congratulations Ashley Brown! Ashley's essay, "Why I Love My School", was selected as one<br />

of the 4 finalists in the High School category sponsored by the L.I. President's Council of New<br />

York State United Teachers. As a finalist Ashley will receive a $250. savings bond and has<br />

qualified for the Grand Prize of a $500. savings bond if her essay is judged best among the<br />

finalists. Mrs. Denise Felice is the English teacher who encouraged Ashley's participation in the<br />

contest.<br />

Ten students from Mrs. Houston's French classes participated in the <strong>Suffolk</strong> <strong>County</strong> Poetry<br />

Contest held at SUNY Stony Brook. The following students received awards for their poetry.<br />

In original poetry, 10th grader Carolyna Caballero and 9th grader Brandi DiCasse received<br />

honorable mention for their work and 11th grader Alexandra Andre received 3rd place.<br />

Teachers Jane DeStio and Jennifer Ievolo their Theater West and Theatre Arts course students<br />

attended the New York State Theatre Educators' Conference. The following students Josh<br />

Biederman, Martin Cohen, Kari Cooper, Gabrielle Federici, Marc Friedman, Zach Goodman, Jon<br />

Harras, Jason Jahier, Matthew Marcucci, Bryce Norbitz, Sean Owczarek, Melissa Passarelli,<br />

Christopher Pavlat, Scott Rothstein, Meaghan Steele and Rachel Verhaaren were in agreement<br />

that this was one of their most rewarding experiences, and they are looking forward to attending<br />

the conference again next year.<br />

Eric Lipp and Alan Chernobilsky hope to attend the United States Air Force Academy next year.<br />

They attended a special screening for academy applicants of the IMAX film Fighter Pilot:<br />

Operation Red Flag at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City. They were able to<br />

discuss Red Flag with USAF Major Michael Baltzer a Red Flag trained fighter pilot and museum<br />

vice president Tom Gwynne, a retired fighter pilot.<br />

Teachers Christine Baldwin (Science) and Amanda Montiglio (Art) were awarded a SUFFOLKS'<br />

EDGE TEACHING CENTER MINI GRANT for the project (L.I. Marine Environment<br />

Children's Book).<br />

Teacher Susan Cohen's proposal "E-Boards" was also selected to receive a grant from<br />

SUFFOLKS' EDGE TEACHING CENTER. This project will explore job-embedded models of<br />

professional development.


David Rosenman has been selected as a semi-finalist in the Siemens Westinghouse Competition.<br />

Congratulations to Matt Levy and Stephany Girardi for being selected by the physical education<br />

staff at High School West for the <strong>Suffolk</strong> Zone award in Health, Physical Education, Recreation<br />

and Dance. One male and one female from every high school in <strong>Suffolk</strong> <strong>County</strong> will be honored<br />

at an awards dinner on Wednesday, December 1.<br />

Stephanie Rivetz was named a Founder's <strong>Scholar</strong> at Syracuse University, where she is enrolled in<br />

the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications majoring in television, radio and film.<br />

Founders scholarships are awarded to entering first-year students and recognize outstanding<br />

academic achievement.<br />

Daniel Nikbakht's research abstract , "Developing a Potential Cure for Trigeminal Neuralgia<br />

through Nanotechnology" was selected for presentation at the Trigeminal Neuralgia<br />

Association's national conference in Orlando, FL - November 2004. Medical researchers from<br />

across the country were invited to attend. Only nine scientific abstracts were selected for<br />

presentation. Daniel's abstract is published in the proceedings of the convention. Daniel was the<br />

first high school researcher to present at this national association he was among faculty<br />

presenters from Harvard, Stanford and University of Florida.<br />

Matthew Sloane was selected to participate in the National Youth Leadership Forum on Defense,<br />

Intelligence and Diplomacy held October 2004 in Washington, D.C. Having demonstrated<br />

academic achievement and an interest in a career related to national security, Matthew joined<br />

approximately 400 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from across the United States.<br />

The Brainstormers (Academic Quiz Bowl Team) have had a very successful year to date. They<br />

have attended Tournaments at Rutgers, Princeton, Gonzaga College, Northport High School and<br />

a televised Long Island Challenge. Future tournaments include MIT, Yale, Columbia High<br />

School and Milburn High School. The Brainstormers have six competing teams led by the<br />

Varsity A Team which includes Captain Andrew Greenberg, Brett Harrison, Jeremy Kaufman<br />

and Andrew Lee.<br />

Several High School West students recently participated in the High School Volunteer Program<br />

in which they prepared and delivered social studies lessons to fifth grade students. These lessons<br />

all focused on various aspects of the election and the electoral process. These students were so<br />

motivated that they requested additional opportunities to visit and participate. I think we might<br />

yield a few future teachers!<br />

Brett Harrison participated in the New York Academy of Science's Graph Theory Day Forty<br />

Eight at Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY. He was the only student presenter at the<br />

one-day meeting to stimulate activity among graph theorists.<br />

Dina Laudadio was selected as a New York State Finalist in the Long Island Miss Teen Pageant<br />

and will compete in the National Competition scheduled to take place this December in Orlando,<br />

FL. Dina is the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Victor Laudadio of Deer Park.<br />

Timothy Leung has been cited as a Winner in the 2004 Achievement Awards in Writing by the<br />

National Council of Teachers of English. He is one of 48 students recognized in New York.<br />

Allison Herman, String Orchestra, Viola was selected to the 2004 NYSSMA All State<br />

Conference which will be held in Rochester, NY on December 2-5, 2004.<br />
