BOARD OF EDUCATION – REGULAR MEETING – JUNE 20, 2011 BOARD OF EDUCATION TRIPLE A AWARD RECIEPIENT: Mrs. Sorkin read the following statement: Four years ago, in the spring of 2007, Dr. Karnilow unveiled a concept that was to define the heart and soul of our District: He defined us as: Half Hollow Hills, a Triple A District, Perfectly Blending Academics, Athletics, and the Arts. Since then, many districts have identified Triple A as a best practice and adopted this concept, but Dr. Karnilow, driving home in his car one night, invented it. Differentiating instruction in the classroom based on learning styles and abilities may have been new to districts across the country at the time, but we were already there. Dr. Karnilow was now on to differentiating the entire school experience based on aptitude, dreams and passions. He created a culture, from elementary through high school, which would offer our students a tremendous array of opportunities he believed they deserved to develop their unique talents and abilities, to explore new experiences and fields of study, and to engage in activities and projects that would perfectly balance their growing needs, interests, and dreams. Only a man incredibly passionate about education could create an educational culture passionate about passion. Each year Dr. Karnilow presents to a graduating student from each of our high schools the Superintendent’s Triple A Award. It goes to a student who embodies the character and accomplishments in each of our A’s; Academics, Athletics and the Arts. Tonight, the Board of Education presents the Board of Education Triple A Award to the man who made possible the incredible depth and breadth of Triple A opportunities to thousands of students throughout our District. Tonight’s recipient of the Board of Education Triple A Award is Dr. Sheldon Karnilow. Dr. Karnilow said it has been a great honor to spend the last ten years of his career in the Half Hollow Hills Central School District. He has felt supported and valued and we are all here for the children who come first. 8
