BOARD OF EDUCATION – REGULAR MEETING – JUNE 20, 2011
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE: Mr. Andrew Greene, Principal of Candlewood Middle School,
welcomed everyone to Candlewood. There have been many
accomplishments and awards throughout this year at Candlewood.
Mr. Greene thanked his two new Assistant Principals, Mike
Abrescia and Traci Roethel for a wonderful year. He mentioned
one person who came to Candlewood at the beginning of this year
who has turned things around for the better. Head Custodian, Nick
Nugent, has done a great job at Candlewood and the building looks
great! Mr. Greene wished everyone a wonderful summer with
time spent with family and friends and time to relax.
SUMMER SCHOOL
PROGRAM:
Dr. Karnilow said we are moving forward with plans for
our Summer School Program:
‣ Six Week Special Education Summer School at Forest Park
‣ Four Week Program Pre-K through Grade 2 at Signal Hill

‣ Four Week Program Grade 3 through Grade 6 at Candlewood
Brennen Bierwiler, Principal
Dr. Karnilow mentioned that we are developing a partnership with
Cannon USA Headquarters in Melville. Dr. Karnilow has spoken
with the President of Cannon USA and they have toured our
schools. They are committed to working with our District in the
future providing support for STEM, Robotics and possibly Science
Labs.
Legislator Steve Stern stated that we have had discussions
regarding developing Half Hollow Hills as a pilot of wireless
connectivity.
FIRE AT DISTRICT’S
TRANSPORTATION
FACILITY:
Mr. Manuel reported that last evening at 8:30 p.m. there was a fire
in our Transportation Building. It began in one of the buses. The
Dix Hills, Melville and Huntington Manor Fire Departments all
responded. There were over 100 firefighters battling the blaze.
The firefighters did an amazing job extinguishing the fire quickly,
however, there was extensive smoke damage to the building. Our
insurance company has been informed and clean-up has begun.
Structural engineers will inspect the building. Our goal will be to
work through the summer to restore the building. Buses were on
schedule this morning.
