BOARD OF EDUCATION – REGULAR MEETING – JUNE 18, 2007 The meeting took at brief recess at 9:15 p.m. The meeting returned to session at 9:30 p.m. HILLS FOUNDATION RAFFLE: Mr. Bob Gordon, President of The Hills Foundation, thanked the Board of Education and the Administration for their support throughout the year. The Hills Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises money for educational purposes in the community. The Raffle is one of their fundraisers and this evening they will be picking the winners. Mrs. Judy Faber joined Mr. Gordon and asked Dr. Karnilow and members of his staff to pick the 2007 Hills Foundation Raffle winners: 1 st Prize John Scotto $2,000 2 nd Prize Jani Majewski $ 400 3 rd Prize Brooke Faber $ 200 4 th Prize Victor Lino Vaz $ 200 5 th Prize Craig Axelrod $ 100 6 th Prize Roz Sherman $ 100 MINUTES: A Motion was made by Mr. Marcucci, seconded by Mrs. Catapano, and carried unanimously (7-0) to approve the Minutes of June 4, 2007 as written. A Motion was made by Mr. Marcucci, seconded by Mrs. Catapano, and carried unanimously (7-0) to approve the Minutes of June 8, 2007 as written. CORRESPONDENCE: The District Clerk highlighted the letters received by the Board: 5/31/07: Letter from the Girl Scouts of Suffolk County inviting the Board to their Silver Award Ceremony on June 15 th . 5/29/07: Letter from St. Matthew Athletics thanking the District for allowing them to use our gym facilities for their practices. They delivered a supply of St. Matthew basketballs as a token of their appreciation. BOARD COMMITTEE REPORTS: Mrs. Bottenus reported that the Facilities Committee, including Mrs. Greenspan, Mrs. Kaufman, Mr. Ptucha, Mrs. Sorkin, Mr. Manuel, Mr. Gelo and Mr. Pennacchio, along with Landtek Corp. and Weidersum Associates, toured the athletic fields at High School East (in the pouring rain!) to see how exactly they are going to extend the field width by approximately 20’. 6
BOARD OF EDUCATION – REGULAR MEETING – JUNE 18, 2007 Mrs. Ptucha reported that the Community Awareness Committee has been discussing the proposed Long Island Truck-Rail Intermodal Facility. The only Hearing on this project will be held tomorrow evening, July 19, 2007, at Brentwood Middle School. Mr. Ptucha encouraged people to attend to learn more about this project and the health and safety issues that go along with it. Dr. Karnilow will send a letter to the DOT on behalf of the School District requesting an additional Hearing to be held within the District. PENDING/UNFINISHED BUSINESS: COMMENTS FROM VISITORS: ACTION ITEMS: Dr. Karnilow mentioned that at our last Board meeting, students presented a petition regarding the location of High School West’s graduation. After careful consideration, High School West’s graduation will be permanently held at the Eugene Orloff Auditorium in High School East. None PERSONEL REPORT A Motion was made by Mr. Marcucci, seconded by Mrs. Catapano, and carried unanimously (7-0) to take the Personnel Report in its entirety.
