Objectives of the DP<br />

The ma<strong>in</strong> educational goal of the adult part time degree programme <strong>in</strong> hotel, restaurant <strong>and</strong><br />

tourism management is to develop students further <strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>ternational hospitality manage-ment<br />

careers. Graduates will ga<strong>in</strong> a solid foundation for jobs rang<strong>in</strong>g from advisory jobs to consult<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

product <strong>and</strong> service development, sales <strong>and</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g, education <strong>and</strong> research experts. The<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternational hospitality <strong>in</strong>dustry needs now <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong> the future professionals with a life long<br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g desire <strong>and</strong> benchmark<strong>in</strong>g skills.<br />

Structure, Content <strong>and</strong> Extent of the<br />

DP<br />

The English speak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Hotel</strong>, <strong>Restaurant</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Tourism</strong> <strong>Management</strong> con-sist<br />

of 210 credits (cr). One academic year requires 1600 hours workload <strong>and</strong> accumulates 60 credits.<br />

Four eight-week thematic entities form each academic study year. The concentration studies start<br />

dur<strong>in</strong>g the spr<strong>in</strong>g of the second year studies <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>ue <strong>in</strong> the alternative module <strong>in</strong> the 3rd year.<br />

The first year studies give the students an underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of basic bus<strong>in</strong>ess operations <strong>in</strong> the<br />

hospitality <strong>in</strong>dustry <strong>and</strong> concentrate on the <strong>in</strong>dividual at work. Second year studies provided the<br />

students with an overall view of the procedures of bus<strong>in</strong>ess units <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>ternational hospi-tality<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustry. Year three studies focus on the company as a whole. At the end of studies, stu-dents will<br />

complete the Bachelor's Thesis <strong>in</strong> co-operation with the hospitality <strong>in</strong>dustry. This will help them to<br />

apply the ga<strong>in</strong>ed academic knowledge <strong>in</strong> practice.<br />

Objectives of the DP<br />

The <strong>Degree</strong> <strong>Programme</strong> <strong>in</strong> International Bus<strong>in</strong>ess as an adult even<strong>in</strong>g programme diversifies <strong>and</strong><br />

deepens adult students' <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess expertise with solid entrepreneurial orientation<br />

needed <strong>in</strong> different functions <strong>and</strong> operations, when small <strong>and</strong> medium-sized enterprises seek to<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationalise their operations. Students strengthen <strong>and</strong> broaden their communication skills <strong>in</strong><br />

several languages. Graduates are quality conscious, result-orientated <strong>and</strong> culturally sensitive for<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a modern global bus<strong>in</strong>ess environment. Foreign students <strong>in</strong>crease their underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

Bachelor's Thesis<br />

The Thematic Curriculum allows the students gradually extend <strong>and</strong> deepen their expertise <strong>and</strong><br />

skills <strong>in</strong> various <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess functions. Several different learn<strong>in</strong>g methods are used.<br />

Course <strong>in</strong>tegration supports students' ability to process complex global bus<strong>in</strong>ess questions. Larger<br />

annual key projects are completed <strong>in</strong> teams.<br />

Still, the Malmi-BBA curriculum is flexible enough to be adjusted to the adult students’ possible<br />

prior-studies <strong>in</strong> higher education.<br />

• BASEMENT: Basic studies. The basic studies lay the solid foundation for underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g of<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess processes. Most of the basic studies are supposed to be completed <strong>in</strong> the first study<br />

year.<br />

• WALLS AND WINDOWS: Professional studies. The professional studies deepen <strong>and</strong><br />

diversify their <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess skills <strong>in</strong> the fields of <strong>in</strong>ternational economics,<br />

market<strong>in</strong>g, managerial f<strong>in</strong>anc<strong>in</strong>g, management, regional busi-ness, languages <strong>and</strong><br />

communication. The students are recommended to move to the professional study phase<br />

after the completion of the basic studies.<br />

• EXTENSION: Free-choise studies. The free-choice studies offer the possibility to<br />

complement knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills by the students’ personal <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. Most of the free-choice studies can be taken after the first study year.<br />

• DOOR TO THE REAL WORLD: Work Placement. Work Placement as part of the<br />

compulsory studies provides opportunities to apply <strong>and</strong> test their knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills<br />

learned to practical <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess issues/problems. Most of the adult Malmi-BBA<br />

students complete the required work placement studies by full-time work-<strong>in</strong>g dur<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

studies.<br />

• ROOF: Bachelor's Thesis. In the bachelor’s thesis process the students specialise to build up<br />

their expertise <strong>in</strong> a certa<strong>in</strong> topic area relevant <strong>in</strong> global bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The bachlor’s thesis is<br />

normally the f<strong>in</strong>al course work before the graduation.<br />

Professional studies 90 ECTS cr<br />

provide the students with a vast variety of knowledge <strong>and</strong> skills required when small <strong>and</strong> medium<br />

sized enter-prises (SMEs) are go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational. The regional studies make the students familiar<br />

with the areas important for F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong>’s foreign trade. The students are able to plan <strong>and</strong> develop <strong>and</strong><br />

carry out foreign trade related opera-tions.<br />

offer the students an opportunity to learn <strong>and</strong> improve their practical skills <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess. The place-ment learn<strong>in</strong>g can be completed either <strong>in</strong> F<strong>in</strong>l<strong>and</strong> or abroad.<br />

Bachelor´s thesis 15 ECTS cr<br />

develops the students’ skills to process <strong>in</strong>ternational bus<strong>in</strong>ess related problems <strong>and</strong> issues <strong>in</strong>to an<br />

academic paper either through qualitative or quantitative research methods.<br />

Free-choice studies 15 ECTS cr<br />

complement the general <strong>and</strong> professional studies <strong>and</strong> they offer the students a possibility to deepen<br />

<strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong> the scope of studies. Therefore, they are recommended only after the completion of the<br />

general studies. An elective course may be cancelled <strong>in</strong> case there are not enough participants<br />

Personal Study Plan<br />

A personal study plan with eventual transfer credits is made for each adult student at the beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of the Malmi-BBA studies. Prior studies completed <strong>in</strong> higher education <strong>in</strong>stitutions can be credited,<br />

if applicable, towards the BBA degree. Merkonomi-diploma can be credited to some extent.
