A Passion for Patient Care 

Celebrating patient-centered nursing 

At Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, we often sum up the reason for 

our success in two words: grateful patients. And, as we were reminded by 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Chief Nursing Officer, Stephanie Swartz, RN, MA, during 

the preparation of this nursing issue of Pathfinders, patients are grateful for 

different things. 

Stephanie would know. Having been deeply involved in projects to capture 

feedback from patients about their nursing care, she hears expressions of 

appreciation that nurses have the expertise to use advanced equipment or 

cutting-edge technology that saved a loved one’s life, or made their own recovery 

possible. Then there are the patients who cite their relationship with a special 

nurse: the one who made a point of involving the patient’s family in planning 

their care, or in addressing their end-of-life issues. This passion for patient care 

is the very essence of the nursing culture at Gundersen Lutheran. 

People who feel passionately about the power of nursing to change lives for the 

better tend to support nursing philanthropy. That certainly applies to supporters 

of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, whose charitable donations in 

recent years have resulted in an increase of opportunities for nurses to enhance 

their practice through research and education. There are currently over 1300 

nurses practicing at Gundersen Lutheran; this issue will introduce you to just 

a few. Think

Kathy Curtis, RN, MS, has worked in obstetrics for most of her 29 

years at Gundersen Lutheran and has been deeply involved with 

many of the initiatives advanced by the Foundation’s Department 

of Nursing Education and Research. “I see nursing practice needing 

to continually change and evolve within the context of so many 

changes in our health care environment.” 

In the spring of 2000, when 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation announced plans for 

a new Department of Nursing Education 

and Research, the vision was 

both bold and ambitious. The goal? 

Develop the best nursing education 

and research program anywhere. 

The objective? To have the same 

powerful impact upon nursing practice 

at Gundersen Lutheran as was 

experienced with the implementation 

of our nationally-renowned medical 

education programs. The creation of 

the new department represented a 

major and exciting endeavor. It would 

enhance an already strong nursing 

culture by offering a broad array of 

opportunities for nurses to develop 

their fullest potential as learners, 

teachers and healers. Eight years later, 

that original vision has borne remarkable 

fruit. A longstanding tradition 

of nurse participation and decisionmaking 

in areas of nursing practice at 

Gundersen Lutheran has taken on new 

scope and dimension, due in no small 

part to vastly increased opportunities 

for professional growth and development. 

Thanks to donor support, the 

Foundation has been able to make key 

investments to provide the tools, time 

and resources that enable nurses to 

evolve their practice at both the unit 

and organizational level.

and mentor with a Nurse Excellence 

Award in the area of nursing research. 

For this issue of Pathfinders, we 

asked Curtis to reflect on some of 

the major changes she has seen in her 

practice over the past eight years, and 

where Foundation initiatives have had 

the biggest impact. 

Describe your involvement with the 

Nursing Research Council. What does 

it do? 

As a whole, nurses are relative 

novices in the area of research; 

it’s a field that has exploded in the 

last 20 years and the amount of 

nursing research out there has grown 

exponentially. So our council has 

been instrumental in educating our 

nurses in what is called evidencebased 

practice. They learn about it 

in nursing school; we continue to 

educate them about what it means 

to base their practice on evidence 

or available research. We’ve developed 

several forums for doing that: 

Grand Rounds, Nursing Research 

First Wednesdays, and an annual 

Research Day are all initiatives the 

Foundation has helped support. The 

Dahlberg Fund has also enabled us 

to bring nationally-known nursing 

speakers here for Nursing Research 

on the Green, which exposes nurses 

throughout our community to leading 

scholars in the area of nursing 

research. A new idea we are pursuing 

is the creation of an online catalog of 

all the research activities taking place 

at Gundersen Lutheran. 

You were in the first group of nurses to 

participate in the Nursing Fellowship 

Program when it launched in 2001. 

What was your area of interest? 

The fellowship program gives 

nurses who have an interest in 

pursuing a research endeavor the 

opportunity to do that away from 

their normal daily activity. The 

Foundation funds the release time, 

so I felt very privileged to have the 

chance to spend designated time in 

this way. In 2001, I was looking at 

the role design for OB-GYN nurses 

across the continuum—from clinic 

to hospital—and how to improve the 

continuity of care for our patients. I 

was intimately involved in the care 

management system that we had 

previously, and my interest was in 

making the role redesign a success 

for our unit. This particular project 

resulted in increased autonomy for 

nurses, and increased involvement by 

clinic nurses in the patient’s plan of 

care. For instance, we now have all 

of our prenatal patients see nurses 

at least three times throughout their 

pregnancy for assessment, education, 

or intervention. Patients also 

fill out an individualized birth plan 

that travels with them from clinic to 

hospital. We were able to implement 

many new ideas in our department as 

a result of that fellowship. 

What attracted you to a teaching role 

when the Foundation established the 

Western Campus relationship with 

UW-Madison School of Nursing? 

For me, it’s been a wonderful fit. 

My master’s degree had an education 

focus, so this gave me the 

opportunity to combine my passion 

for maternal child nursing with my 

interest in teaching. It’s another 

area where Gundersen Lutheran is 

quite unique. Most organizations 

will not allow their staff to combine 

a teaching role with a clinical role 

like this, much less support and 

encourage it through their Foundation. 

Here it is recognized that when 

you’re a teacher, you’re also a learner. 

If we as nurses can advance our 

practice, improve our knowledge and 

skills through teaching students or 

teaching our own staff, it is going to 

affect the level of patient care that 

is delivered. Striving to provide the 

most excellent care means the patient 

ultimately benefits. It’s a win-win 

situation. 

If you could look into a crystal 

ball, what would you see in terms 

of the future of nursing practice at 

Gundersen Lutheran? 

I see nursing practice needing to 

continually change and evolve within 

the context of so many changes 

in our health care environment. 

With the explosion in technology, 

we are constantly challenged to 

keep up-to-date. The shortage of 

nurses nationally challenges us to 

make nursing here at Gundersen 

Lutheran attractive and satisfying. 

The complexity and continuity of 

patient care challenges us more than 

ever with critical thinking skills. The 

economic climate of rising health 

care costs challenges us to be aware 

of costs while providing the highest 

level of care. With all of this, we are 

finally challenged to provide care 

grounded in humanistic values and 

within a caring relationship with 

patients and families. We can meet 

these challenges, especially here, in 

our environment that supports innovation 

and creativity for nurses.

Recognizing 

Five Years of Success 

Innovative academic partnership 

with UW-Madison School of 

Nursing yields results 

In 2003, Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

began a unique academic collaboration with the 

University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Nursing 

as its accredited Western Campus. Students applying to 

the UW-Madison School of Nursing after completing 

two years of prerequisite courses now had the option of 

completing their junior and senior years in La Crosse 

at Gundersen Lutheran. Upon successful completion 

of the Western Campus program and the university’s 

general education requirements, students earn a 

Bachelor of Science degree with a major in nursing from 

UW-Madison. 

The benefits of this innovative public-private partnership 

include an expansion of enrollment opportunities to 

produce more nursing graduates, and the enrichment of an 

already strong culture of nursing excellence at Gundersen 

Lutheran. The first five years have yielded impressive 

results. Three graduating classes, not counting the senior 

class graduating in May, 2008. Growth in enrollment, 

from five students in the first admitted class (graduated 

in 2005) to 24 graduates in 2007, and 24 seniors on track 

to graduate this spring. To date, more than one-third of 

all Western Campus grads are now pursuing their nursing 

career at Gundersen Lutheran, with several more employed 

within the 19-county service area. That percentage is 

projected to keep climbing as the Class of 2008 is now in 

process of applying and interviewing for positions 

What makes the Western Campus special? Pathfinders 

asked three nurses associated with the program to share 

their perspective.

Class of 2008 

My high school graduating class had 34 

kids, so I was not sure I was ready to 

go to a big school like Madison. I started my 

undergraduate work at UW-La Crosse and 

made the decision to go into nursing the second 

semester of my freshman year. I really enjoyed 

the city and all La Crosse had to offer, so after I 

learned about the nursing program at Gundersen 

Lutheran I applied for the Western Campus.

I 

was very interested in getting involved 

with the Western Campus because I love 

teaching! Staff development was part of my 

manager role, and as an advanced practice 

nurse it was an important part of my role to 

educate peers, patients, and staff. The reason 

I hadn’t pursued teaching was because I really 

believed in what I was doing at Gundersen 

Lutheran and I enjoyed my job. 

As a Foundation supporter, I’m 

proud—and very glad—that we were 

given the opportunity to build this 

program at Gundersen Lutheran. 

I’m very excited about our success. 

We’ve really strengthened our 

relationship with UW-Madison, and 

it’s continuing to strengthen over 

time. Another measure of success is 

that more and more applicants are 

requesting admission to this campus. 

The momentum can be seen in the 

phenomenal growth of our Student 

Nurse Association. When we started 

it, the first members were the five 

students in our 2005 graduating 

class. It now attracts between 50 

and 80 nursing and pre-nursing 

students! Our reputation is growing 

within the community and even 

around the state. 

My gratification really comes 

from the students. I have them their 

entire senior year and it is exciting 

to see their growth throughout 

the year. Our goal is to give them 

the best experience at Gundersen 

Lutheran and hopefully retain a nice 

percentage of them after graduation. 

Recruitment of well-qualified 

nurses is an obvious benefit to the 

organization, especially in a time of 

nursing shortages. It’s also rewarding 

to hear back from graduates who 

have been hired by other organizations 

and are told during their 

orientation that they ‘must have come 

from a really good nursing program 

because we can’t believe how much 

you know.’ Through this partnership 

with UW-Madison School of 

Nursing, Gundersen Lutheran is 

really emerging as a leader in nursing 

education, and that’s very exciting. 

As a team coordinator for the Western 

Campus, Rosanne Schulz is part of the 

group that oversees day-to-day program 

operations, serves as lead faculty for 

various courses, and continues to 

perform in other nursing capacities at 

Gundersen Lutheran.

Everything about the program 

is truly great. The faculty here are 

great. They open your eyes to so 

many opportunities and really help 

you grow so much as a student 

and as a professional. You get a 

top-notch education from the best 

university in the state, in a small 

class setting that you can’t get in 

Madison. The student/teacher ratio 

means you get a lot of one-on-one 

attention that’s going to help you 

succeed in the future. 

There are so many experiences 

you can get here as a student. 

Eventually I want to go into anesthesia, 

and Gundersen Lutheran 

has a 10-week internship program 

that I completed this summer in 

the PACU (Post Anesthesia Care 

Unit.) In September, I was hired 

there as a nurse tech. I’m currently 

doing an honors research project 

on conscious sedation which I’ll be 

presenting at the upcoming undergraduate 

symposium in Madison. 

The faculty here have been so 

accommodating to everything I’ve 

wanted to do, and pushed me to the 

limits. They’ve shown me there is 

a bigger world out there. I think it’s 

an amazing program. 

After graduating in May, Chris plans 

to take his board exams and continue his 

nursing career in the surgical trauma 

intensive care unit at Duke University in 

Durham, North Carolina.

Class of 2007 

I 

was recently divorced and working as a 

medical assistant at the time I decided to 

go back to school seven years ago. Two years 

into my undergrad work I found out about 

the Western Campus program and thought it 

was perfect. I knew UW-Madison had a very 

good nursing program and was highly ranked 

nationally. I also knew I wanted to stay in the 

La Crosse area. 

The first time I applied, I was 

crushed when I did not get accepted. 

With three applicants for every 

opening, it’s hard to get in. If 

someone hadn’t changed their mind 

the second year I applied, I might not 

have gotten in then, either. 

As a student, what immediately 

impressed me about Gundersen 

Lutheran was how the nurses I 

worked with during clinicals were 

happy with their jobs. Also, that the 

nurses teaching classes are nurses 

who are actually on the job and have 

experience right now—not from 10 

or 20 years ago. Things change so 

quickly, it was good to hear from 

nurses who are working now and 

can relate to you coming on as a new 

nurse. 

One of the reasons I chose to 

continue at Gundersen Lutheran after 

graduation is I knew there was room 

to grow. I wasn’t going to come to a 

dead end, and I would be supported 

if I was interested in another area. 

It was very evident to me that 

continuing education was important 

to nursing at Gundersen Lutheran and 

I knew they would help me with that. 

Why wouldn’t I want to stay here? 

I was the perfect candidate for this 

program—I’m pleased with what I 

learned, and I’m still learning.

Lutheran’s Orthopedics Department

employment anniversary in early 

February. 


Learning Opportunities 

Expand and Enhance Scope of 

Nursing Practice 

Research and scholarship create 

synergy in quality patient care 

This is a story about opportunity. Specifically, about 

learning opportunities for nurses and how they 

can transform a career, an organization, and a 

profession. 

In 1986, Jayne Laylan graduated from what is now 

Western Technical College with an associate degree 

in nursing. She began her nursing career at Gundersen 

Lutheran at that time, practicing primarily in the area of 

women’s health. “I always thought about going back to 

school for my bachelor’s degree,” Laylan recalls. “It was 

always a goal of mine, but when my children were small it 

just never seemed like it worked out.” 

In 2002, Laylan joined Gundersen Lutheran’s Nursing 

Research Council, the governance group that interacts 

closely with the Nursing Education and Research Department 

of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation to 

provide education, support and leadership for nurses in 

conducting and using evidence-based practice to enhance 

patient care. As her involvement with the Council grew, 

Laylan became serious about resuming her academic 

path. “The support of my peers and co-workers helped me 

realize if you wait for the perfect time, it is never going to 

come.” She credits the mentorship of Ana Schaper, RN, 

PhD, nursing research manager for Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation, for providing both inspiration and 

encouragement. With her enthusiasm for scholarship—not 

just school, but opportunities for lifelong learning and 

professional development—Schaper has been a driving 

force for Laylan. She decided to enroll at Viterbo University, 

earning her BSN degree in 2004. 

At the same time, Laylan continued her active involvement 

in the Nursing Research Council and, in 2003, 

began to assist with the planning of an annual forum for 

recognizing nursing scholarship and research conducted 

by nursing students, instructors and practitioners within 

the local healthcare community. This event, Nursing 

Research on the Green (see next page), was first held in 

2002 and has since become a premier networking event 

for nursing professionals 

throughout 

the region. One of 

the annual highlights 

is a keynote 

presentation by the 

Dahlberg Scholar, 

a nationally recognized 

nursing scholar 

whose appearance 

is funded by 

Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation. “These incredibly accomplished 

speakers offer a wonderful opportunity for nurses within 

our community to dialog and broaden our horizons,” says 

Laylan. “When we hear their stories, many times they’re 

not so different from our own. It opens doors on new 

possibilities, and makes us realize we can grow in our 

practice as well.” 

Nursing research became a passion for Laylan. “It is so 

important, not only because research completes our scope 

of practice as nurses, but because it forms the foundation 

for our nursing practice. Research helps drive the 

future. It’s the vehicle for questioning things, to implement 

change, and to give us as nurses a voice in those 

decisions.” Interested in pursuing her own research activities 

in evidence-based practice, Laylan was awarded a 

Foundation-funded nursing research fellowship in 2003 

and 2004. She has since had the opportunity to prepare 

her work for publication and present at several national 

conferences. “When I talk to other nurses about Research 

on the Green and our fellowship program, they see it as 

very unique and very impressive. Most organizations do 

not offer the backing that we receive here,” says Laylan. 

“It’s really very rewarding to work where you have a 

medical foundation that considers it a priority to create 

these learning opportunities for nurses.” As of 2007, there 

had been 73 nursing fellowships awarded since Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation launched the program in 

2001. In 2008, there are seven nursing “fellows” at work 

on evidence-based projects; the number of fellowships 

varies from year to year and has ranged between seven to 

ten nurses at any given time. The duration of each fellowship 

also varies between one to two years, depending on 

the nature of the project. 

2007 was a year of continued professional growth for 

Laylan. She graduated from Viterbo University with her

Master’s of Science in Nursing and is now a cardiology 

nurse practitioner in Gundersen Lutheran’s Congestive 

Heart Failure Clinic. “It’s a relatively new field for me, 

but cardiology has always been an interest,” says Laylan. 

“I’ll also have an active role on an interdisciplinary team 

engaged in a program of research related to heart failure.” 

Creating opportunities is one thing. Recognizing and 

taking advantage of them is another. For Jayne Laylan, 

“expanding your horizons” has become a personal credo. 

“Any time you’re engaging in classes, or networking with 

other nurses, you’re going to continue learning something 

and that will be reflected in your care for your patients,” 

says Laylan. “Growing as a person and within your 

profession can only benefit us as nurses, as well as the 

patients that we serve.” 

Renowned Nursing Theorist Named 2008 Dahlberg Scholar 

Jean Watson, PhD, RN, FAAN, will be making a 

rare, and highly anticipated, appearance in La Crosse on 

April 24 as the 2008 Dahlberg Scholar and guest-lecturer 

at Nursing Research on the Green. The community-wide 

event, held at Viterbo University’s Fine Arts Center, 

brings together nursing professionals from Gundersen 

Lutheran, Viterbo University, Franciscan Skemp Healthcare, 

Western Technical College, and Sigma Theta Tau. 

It is a day for nurses from any setting, as well as student 

nurses, to be united for the purpose of recognizing 

nursing scholarship and for sharing research and clinical 

practice innovations. 

Dr. Watson’s keynote address is expected to attract 

nurses from beyond the immediate community, since 

her influential work as a nursing theorist, scholar and 

educator has earned international acclaim. Dr. Watson 

is a Distinguished Professor of Nursing at the University 

of Colorado in Denver, and is founder of the original 

Center for Human Caring in Colorado. Clinical nurses 

and academic programs throughout the world are motivated 

by her published works on the Theory of Caring, 

which focuses on the art and science of caring in nursing. 

Gundersen Lutheran’s professional nursing model was 

developed with Dr. Watson’s 

philosophy in mind. For 

nurses inspired to provide 

more personal, relational 

care to their patients, Dr. 

Watson’s appearance is an event not to be missed. 

Nursing Research on the Green is open to the public 

free of charge. The event runs from 1:00–7:00 pm, and 

includes a book signing by Dr. Watson at 2:00 pm, a 

program and keynote address beginning at 3:30 pm, 

followed by a 5:00 pm reception in Dr. Watson’s honor.

The fund supporting this annual nursing lectureship 

is named for Dr. Philip Dahlberg, a retired Gundersen 

Lutheran clinician and administrator whose deep respect 

for nurses and their role in collaborative practice was

Creates New 

Opportunity for 

Nursing Students 

Summer fellowship 

promotes awareness of 

research evidence in 

the nursing practice 

Research fellowships take 

many different forms at 


Foundation. Since 2001, there have 

been fellowships available to practicing 

nurses in the areas of research, 

nursing education, and evidence-based 

practice. There have been 13-week 

summer research fellowships available 

to medical students through the A.C.V. 

Elston, III, MD, Summer Fellowship 

Program. But until 2007, there had not 

been a summer research fellowship 

opportunity designed especially for 

nursing students. That changed when 

Dr. “Van” Elston (the Foundation’s 

former Director of Medical Research) 

and his wife, Mary (a former nurse) 

used the occasion of his retirement 

to make a gift that would honor both 

their professions. 

Alison Fisher, now a senior nursing 

student at the Western Campus of 

the UW-Madison School of Nursing, 

became the first beneficiary of the 

Elston’s gift when she completed the 

summer nursing research fellowship 

last year. “There are not a lot of 

opportunities like this in nursing 

school,” says Fisher. “People tend 

to do clinical internships where 

they’re on a unit in the hospital or 

clinic. This exposed me to something 

completely different, so for me 

it was a way to have a more wellrounded 

experience.” 

Fisher’s main project was a heart 

disease study in which, among other 

things, she looked at 8–10 year 

outcomes on women under age 65 

who had suffered a heart attack. The 

fellowship is designed to increase 

knowledge and understanding 

of frameworks that underpin the 

student’s chosen project, such as 

education on research design, qualitative 

measurement, and change 

theory. “I learned so much about the 

research process, and about heart 

disease,” says Fisher, who feels the 

fellowship experience has already 

had a profound effect on her professional 

growth. “I’m different in 

the way I am able to communicate, 

and in my critical thinking skills.” 

Fisher had the opportunity to 

present her research at a Gundersen 

Lutheran noon conference, and her 

poster was selected to appear at 

the Wisconsin Nurses Association 

meeting last fall.

New opportunities often create momentum that 

launches yet more opportunities. Ana Schaper, PhD, RN, 

the nursing research program manager for Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation, credits Fisher’s fellowship 

with spurring another new initiative. One valuable 

aspect of the summer research fellowship experience 

is the nursing student’s exposure to fellows of other 

disciplines—pre-med, pre-pharmacy, psychology— 

which sets the stage for interdisciplinary teamwork 

in their future career. During her summer fellowship, 

Dr. Schaper explains, Fisher noted the relatively 

limited exposure students from other disciplines had 

to the nursing practice. In response, new shadowing 

opportunities have been created so all the Foundation’s 

summer fellows can choose to be paired with advanced 

practice nurses and nurse practitioners in 2008. 

Alison Fisher is on track to graduate in May, and 

already knows she wants to begin her nursing career 

at Gundersen Lutheran. “I’m not yet sure which unit is 

the best fit for me,” says Fisher. “I see myself becoming 

pretty involved in the department as a staff nurse. In 

fact, I’ve already been encouraged to consider a nursing 

fellowship in a few years!”

Care Coordination Helps 

Patients Navigate a 

Complex System 

As an advocate for patients, RN Care 

Coordinators exemplify relationshipcentered 

care 

The patient relationship, and patient-centered 

care, forms the very heart of the nursing 

culture at Gundersen Lutheran. That 

priority can be seen in every unit and clinic setting 

throughout the system, and especially informs the 

role of the RN Care Coordinator. 

The idea of care coordination began to emerge 

here in 2001, as an organizational response to 

improving service to patients with complex issues. 

The issues themselves could vary—the patient 

might lack support systems or experience financial 

limitations; they may have a history of multiple 

inpatient admissions or urgent care visits; they may 

need to be treated by multiple providers for multiple 

medical diagnoses. The question was: which 

evidence-based practices could be deployed to assist 

these patients in managing their complex issues and 

reaching their optimal health? 

After careful study, the answer came in the 

form of a redesigned nursing role that would serve 

complex patients across the care continuum, from 

hospital to clinic to home and community. The RN 

Care Coordinator role was developed to serve as an 

advocate for the patient, helping them navigate the 

full spectrum of healthcare services and resources 

available to meet their needs and goals. The first 

RN Care Coordinator, Lois Tucker, RN began 

serving Gundersen Lutheran’s cardio-pulmonary 

patient population in 2003. What began as a pilot 

program has since grown into a full-fledged Care 

Coordination department which includes 21 nurses, 

three social workers, and an office assistant. Each 

Care Coordinator is either geographically located 

(Prairie du Chien, Tomah, West Union, Viroqua) 

or serves a specific patient population (Behavioral 

Health, Hematology/Oncology, Internal Medicine, 

Neurosciences, Pediatrics, as well as Cardio-Pulmonary.) 

They typically serve from 50–60 patients 

at any given time, although the amount and type of

contact varies depending on each patient’s needs. 

Lois Tucker’s passion for the RN Care Coordinator’s 

role stems from her desire to help patients better understand 

the health care information they are receiving 

from their providers and incorporating it into their daily 

life. “It’s very typical for these complex patients to feel 

overwhelmed,” she explains. “We try to look at the 

underlying reasons some patients aren’t able to follow 

through with their health care.” For example, Tucker 

cites a woman with multiple health issues—diabetes, 

heart and lung disease—who began missing her medical 

appointments. During the normal course of care coordinator 

follow-up, it was discovered the woman was the 

primary caregiver for her husband, who was afflicted 

with Alzheimer’s. Caring for this patient as a whole 

person meant calling upon support from Care Coordination 

social workers to identify resources to assist with 

the husband’s care so his wife could manage her own 

health issues more effectively. 

Cathy Becker, RN, a 25-year nursing veteran at 

Gundersen Lutheran, joined the Care Coordination 

Department in the fall of 2007. “This role is very 

patient-centered; that’s the neat thing about it,” says 

Becker, who had been a clinical manager before her 

transition to care coordination. “When patients are 

seeing three or four physicians, it is a godsend for them 

to have a single point of contact to help eliminate confusion, 

or to make sure their wishes are being heard.” 

Sue Gelatt has benefited from Care Coordination 

services both as a patient, and as a family member who 

was dealing with serious health issues affecting first her 

mother, then her sister, and then her husband Charles. 

In each case, Lois Tucker was her point of contact. “As 

the medical power-of-attorney for both my sister and 

my mother, it certainly made my role easier to have a 

professional like Lois involved,”says Gelatt. “When 

I became the patient, I was running out of family 

members who could be of any support. Lois became like 

extended family who worked in coordination with my 

wonderful friends during my treatment and recovery. I 

owe her a debt of gratitude.” 

Patient referrals to the Care Coordination Department 

come from many different points of contact: 

nurses, social workers, physicians or family members. 

Upon receiving the referral, an additional assessment is 

completed to determine the patient’s need for services 

or follow-up care. The patient’s primary physician is 

consulted. The RN Care Coordinator, in collaboration 

with the patient, his or her physician(s), family 

and other members of their health care team, identifies 

mutual goals and implements a plan of care. “Being an 

integrated system provides a unique advantage,” notes 

Tucker. “We have one medical record that really allows 

us to get complete picture of what the patient has been 

through—hospital admissions, clinic follow up, emergency 

room visits, urgent care. This role enables nurses 

to become involved across the whole system and pull 

it together for the patient. That’s the part I love: when 

these complex patients are finally able manage their 

own care and begin making progress.” 

In 2007, Tucker and two nursing colleagues were 

selected for a Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

Nursing Fellowship to document Care Coordination 

outcomes at Gundersen Lutheran, locate related research 

evidence in the published literature, synthesize this 

information, and define a best-practice model designed 

to improve patient care. As Tucker’s fellowship enters 

its second year, they are now testing that best-practice 

model in a pilot program so their innovative findings 

may be published to share with the larger research 

community and integrated into practice. 

Care Coordination is available to Gundersen 

Lutheran patients of all ages, and is a service provided

love being a nurse, number one. 

And I love working with kids, 

which includes working with 

families. I’m a parent myself, so I 

know it is a very anxiety-producing 

situation to have your child unwell, 

even when you know you’re going to 

be getting great care. 

On our floor, we see CMN’s presence 

in a lot of ways. Their meal 

vouchers are a wonderful thing, 

something we are able to give parents 

who are already sick with worry 

about their children. The parents are 

very grateful to have one less thing to 

worry about, and it helps them know 

that we care for them as well. 

CMN has provided a lot of books 

for our playroom, along with the 

first computer we had there for kids 

to play on. They have donated toys 

that we can offer our patients as gifts 

following a painful procedure. All 

kids love watching movies, and CMN 

purchased DVD players so kids can 

watch videos and play in their rooms, 

too. All of these things are very useful 

in our care of patients. 

CMN has also funded several child 

life specialist positions to help educate 

and reassure our patients through 

the use of play. They might use dolls 

to teach a child about getting her 

IV started, or use a photo book that 

explains x-ray procedures in a nonthreatening 

way. CMN has offered 

families travel vouchers to help with 

the cost of going to and from the 

hospital, and they’ve helped with the 

cost of medications or other treatments. 

It’s really a wonderful organization 

that provides great resources 

to families and patients here. That’s 

why our floor helps with fundraising 

activities—we sell calendar raffle 

tickets each year to benefit CMN. 

We also support the CMN Radiothon 

by volunteering to answer phones. 

Anything people can do to help 

donate—any little amount they can 

give—will be very useful. CMN gives 

right back to the community, directly 

to our patients and families. 

To me, it is really fulfilling to see 

someone come in who is sick and later 

see them leave happy, with their small 

smiles, warm hugs, and feeling better.

If you were to ask Bill and Ann 

Barney for their definition of fun, 

the answer would most certainly 

include charitable giving. The 

Barneys both readily admit they don’t 

live an extravagant life; they prefer 

eating at home most nights instead of 

going out. What they enjoy more than 

anything, as is clear by their many 

acts of generosity toward La Crosse 

and surrounding communities, is 

helping others. 

The Barney’s relationship with 


goes back 30 years or so, and 

they have participated in the life of 

the Foundation in many different 

ways. Both Ann and Bill have donated 

their time and expertise: Ann through 

service on various committees and 

as a hospice volunteer; Bill as a 20+ 

year member of the Foundation Board 

of Directors, including two terms 

as its chairman. They are members 

of the Heritage Society by virtue of 

their annual giving, they are Legacy 

Society members through their farsighted 

use of planned giving options, 

and their cumulative giving history 

has earned them recognition as 

members of our Founders Society. 

Year in and year out, their gifts 

have helped advance our mission. The 

Barney’s generosity can also be seen 

in the physical spaces that our patients 

and staff experience every day. The 

beautiful waiting room on the second 

floor of the East Building, with its 

high ceilings, wall of windows, and 

breathtaking view of the bluffs, was 

made possible through a major gift 

from the Barneys and is named in 

their honor. Later this spring, we 

will cut the ribbon to celebrate the 

opening of The William A. and Ann 

C. Barney Board Room, a state-ofthe-art 

meeting space that recognizes 

the Barney’s most recent major gift 

to the Foundation. (For more on the 

Foundation’s move to new quarters in 

the main Clinic, see story on page 31.) 

The Barney’s enthusiasm for giving 

never ceases to amaze me. They are 

both people who don’t know how to 

say no; or, to be more precise, they 

are both people who always try to say 

yes when it comes to caring about 

others and sharing with others. We 

are so grateful to count them among 

our friends.

Foundation could not— 

would not—exist were it not 

for grateful patients and their families. 

Behind so many of the gifts we 

receive is a story about a physician, 

a nurse, or a team of medical professionals 

whose compassionate care was 

so exceptional that it sparks philanthropy 

in return. 

Such was the case for Denise 

Rostad, who made a gift in memory 

of her father, Allen, following his 

death from a stroke last October. In 

her note, Denise recalls her dad’s 

recovery from heart surgery 13 years 

ago. She writes, “We are so grateful 

for the time that we had after dad’s

heart surgery and for the good care 

he received…For our family, it 

meant that dad could see his grandchildren 

graduate from high school 

and college, attend the weddings 

of his two granddaughters, and 

celebrate his great-grandson’s first 

birthday this past October.” 

When I spoke with Denise, she 

had especially kind words for the 

nurses who were so instrumental in 

giving her father those 13 healthy 

years. She recalled his strong work 

ethic, and how after his heart attack 

and surgery he struggled with the 

thought that he might never be able 

to resume physical labor or do the 

things he wanted to do. Her father 

was not a patient patient, says 

Denise, but his nurses took the time 

to care about him as a person, not 

just a disease. Their encouragement 

and understanding motivated him 

to follow the appropriate rehabilitation, 

and eventually he was able to 

return to the work he loved. In fact, 

he worked right up until the week 

before he died at the age of 84. 

The experience of this one 

patient, and this one family, is 

representative of what happens 

every day throughout the Gundersen 

Lutheran system. Outstanding, 

caring and compassionate nurses, 

doctors, and staff touch people’s 

lives in unforgettable ways. 

Grateful patients are inspired to 

make gifts to the Foundation as an 

expression of appreciation. Their 

dollars are reinvested in educational 

initiatives and research projects 

that enhance quality healthcare 

for future patients. We are so 

very proud of what we are able to 

accomplish through our mission, 

but we are proudest of—and most 

grateful for—the patient care that is 

delivered every day to families like 

the Rostads. 

Medical Missions Aid 

Global Community

One of the great privileges 

of my involvement with the 

Foundation’s grant making 

process is becoming familiar with 

the outstanding outreach efforts 

Gundersen Lutheran staff are 

making on behalf of our community, 

and our world. An example 

of this is Mary Dudley, CRNA, a 

remarkable Gundersen Lutheran 

nurse anesthetist who has made the 

medical needs of developing countries 

part of her own mission. 

For years now, Mary has been a 

key force in local medical mission 

trips that travel to third-world 

regions delivering help and hope. 

She has been involved with 15 

mission trips to 10 countries 

providing both education and 

service through organizations 

such as Operation Smile, Sharing 

Resources Worldwide, Health 

Volunteers Overseas and the 

Wisconsin chapter of Healing 

the Children Incorporated. 

Volunteers like Mary donate 

their time and expertise, paying 

their own expenses to participate 

in these philanthropic 

endeavors. To help support 

their efforts, the Foundation 

annually allocates $10,000 in 

grant support to underwrite 

the costs of needed medical 

supplies—such as anesthetics, antibiotics, 

team medicines, or surgical 

materials—that cannot be obtained 

at the mission sites. 

What are the rewards of such 

an investment? Certainly, every 

participating volunteer returns 

to Gundersen Lutheran with the 

immense satisfaction of having 

made a difference, and a profound 

appreciation for the system of 

healthcare and basic infrastructure 

available in this country. Mission 

work also is a tremendous learning 

opportunity; in areas lacking 

modern tools and technology, 

the practitioner’s ability to assess 

medical conditions using only eyes 

and hands becomes a valuable 

lesson in an age-old skill. 

In 2007, the American Association 

of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA) 

Foundation honored Mary Dudley 

with its Rita L. LeBlanc Philanthropist 

of the Year Award. Mary has 

made a career out of sharing her 

gifts with others, and those of us at 


couldn’t be prouder. She’s 

a shining example of the nursing 

profession at its best—and one heck 

of a philanthropist.

As an annual giving program, the 

Heritage Society recognizes total 

gifts within a calendar year. Donors 

whose cumulative gifts totaled $200 

or more between January 1 and 

December 31, 2007, will be honored 

at the Foundation’s annual Heritage 

Celebration, to be held this year on 

April 16, 17, 18, 2008. This special 

recognition event is so big, it takes 

three nights to celebrate!

“I believe in giving what you can. Supporting Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation is my way of giving to a valuable organization 

that supports its community. I am proud to be part of an organization 

that believes strongly in helping others, and am happy to see the 

Foundation support local charities. I know Children’s Miracle Network ® 

has helped many families. I’m a parent myself, so you always relate to 

what it would be like to have a child or family member go through such 

a very difficult part of life. Even though I may not know many of these 

families personally, I can relate as a parent. 

“Another area I feel really strongly about is education. I loved being 

a student, but I know it can be very financially straining. Many students 

benefit from scholarships; I am glad to see the Foundation encourages 

and supports education and scholarships. 

“As a former student who spent internship time at Gundersen 

Lutheran, it was very appealing to me knowing they are supporting

Telephone Nurse Advisors 

Experienced nursing advice 

available 24/7/365 

In 1993, a small group of Gundersen 

Lutheran doctors and nurses conceived 

the idea of a telephone nurse advisor 

program, with nurses available night 

and day to provide medical advice. Not 

only could patients get information 

when they needed it, but the service 

also reduced the enormous number of 

telephone calls to clinic doctors. 

The program was immediately 

successful, and today has grown into 

a high-volume service with as many 

as eight nurses answering calls during 

peak times on evenings and weekends. 

In 2006, 31 registered nurses—with 

an average of 23 years of practical 

nursing experience—handled 80,000 

calls. The calls for advice are handled 

according to well-established protocols, 

which are updated yearly. Callers 

may be transferred to a doctor on 

call, or referred to the Emergency 

Department or Urgent Care. When 

advice regarding treatment is given, 

prescriptions are frequently called to 

pharmacies, and follow-up appointments 

with doctors are made. 

The community is not alone in 

their appreciation of this valuable 

service. In a recent employment 

satisfaction survey, Telephone Nurse 

Advisors returned the highest score 

(97%) of any department in the entire 

Gundersen Lutheran Health System.

Happenings 

Foundation Offices on the Move 

This spring Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation will be relocating 

to newly renovated quarters on the third floor of the Gundersen Clinic 

main campus. The move has been highly anticipated for many reasons. 

There is great historical significance to the new location, which is within 

the original 1929 clinic space where the Foundation itself had its earliest 

beginnings in 1944. It became Dr. Adolf Gundersen’s dream that one 

day all divisions of the Foundation—Medical Education, Research, and 

Development—would be housed in the same location as a tangible expression 

of the Foundation’s scope and mission. Thanks to the outstanding 

efforts of Gundersen Lutheran administration and our colleagues in the 

Planning and Facilities Department, that dream will soon be a reality. 

For the first time in the Foundation’s history, our core departments 

will enjoy the collaborative synergy that is generated by working in close 

proximity. The new space will also house the state-of-the-art William A. 

and Ann C. Barney Board Room, designed to provide an enhanced 

conference environment and advanced media capabilities. With distance 

education links to 60 sites in the Gundersen Lutheran network and video 

conferencing connections to anywhere in the world, this spectacular 

board room will benefit both Foundation staff and Gundersen Lutheran 

administration. Once the move is complete, our benefactors, patients and 

the organization as a whole will have an exciting new vantage point on 

the work of our Foundation. We are very grateful for the opportunity to 

serve you and welcome you to this extraordinary new home. 

“Pennies” Raises Thousands for Paula’s Purse 

Paula’s Purse, a new fund sponsored by Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation, was created to assist cancer patients and their families who 

are struggling to make ends meet. The community’s need for such a 

resource is very real; for years, Gundersen Lutheran physicians and staff 

have been known to open up their own “purses” to help those patients 

trying to pay for necessities like groceries, heat, or transportation to 

and from treatment. The fund honors the memory of Paula Tower, a 

Gundersen Lutheran mammography technologist who lost her battle 

with cancer in 2007. Paula’s caring spirit touched many lives during her 

16-year career; naming the fund in her honor ensures that legacy of caring 

continues into the future. 

The first Paula’s Purse fundraiser, a special performance of “Pennies 

from Heaven,” a Broadway Revue, was a huge success. The January 13 

event attracted a sold-out crowd of musical theatre lovers and raised 

$17,000. Future fundraisers are being planned throughout the year. In 

addition, contributions to benefit Paula’s Purse may be made at any time 

by visiting gundluth.org/foundation, clicking on “Make a Gift” and 

designating Paula’s Purse. Each gift makes a difference when it comes to 

reducing stress for cancer patients and their loved ones.

Celebrating Nurses in May 

National Nurses Week is celebrated 

annually from May 6 (also known as National 

Nurses Day) through May 12, the birthday 

of Florence Nightingale, the founder of 

modern nursing. Gundersen Lutheran’s 2008 

Nurses Day Celebration will take place 

on the evening of Thursday, May 8, at the 

La Crosse Center. Nearly 400 nurses will 

be attending this special gathering, which 

includes a fun-filled opening reception, buffet 

dinner, and presentation of the annual Nurse 

Excellence Awards. Taking their cue from the 

2008 theme, “Nurses: Making a Difference 

Every Day,” event organizers plan to feature 

two Gundersen Lutheran nurses as speakers 

during the evening’s program. For more
