DEAR FRIENDS: 

The world became a different place in the 

closing months of 2008. Yet despite the 

challenges that accompany such change, 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation has 

many reasons to be grateful. 

DEDICATED DONORS: Individuals, 

businesses and other organizations upheld their 

tradition of generous philanthropic support for 

the Foundation’s mission. In fact, 2008 was a 

successful year for fundraising, with results that 

met or exceeded goals in nearly all areas. These 

extraordinary results speak volumes about the 

commitment and confidence of our benefactors. 

DEDICATED LEADERS: We deeply 

appreciate the many community members who 

participate in the work of the Foundation by 

volunteering their time and talent to serve on 

advisory boards and committees. At the Board 

level, treasurer and executive committee member 

Dirk L. Gasterland completed his distinguished 

service, while previous Board member C. Daniel 

Gelatt, PhD, returned for a new term. 

DEDICATED PURPOSE: In times of 

uncertainty, there is strength to be found in a 

clear, mission-driven strategy such as our 

Foundation’s. We will continue to be farsighted 

and focus on those same values that have 

served Gundersen Lutheran so well for over a 

century. For us, the bottom line will always be 

good patient care. 

We feel privileged to be witness to the 

astonishing power of philanthropy, which provides 

a way for our communities to pull together in

2008 DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS 

GOALS EXCEEDED: The Foundation’s 

development division surpassed its overall 

financial goal for the year ending December 31, 

2008. Total dollars raised were $4,753,482, 

which represents a 15 percent increase over 

calendar year 2007 and 116 percent of the 

goal for 2008. Strong results in two key 

areas—estate gifts and major and planned 

gifts—led the way in a year of gratifying 

response from donors, despite a faltering 

economy. Six thousand three hundred and 

thirty six (6,336) individuals made a total of 

12,909 gifts during 2008. Fifteen hundred of 

these benefactors were making their first gift 

to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. 

MAJOR RESEARCH GIFT: A $1 million 

gift from Dr. Jon and Betty Kabara, made in 

recognition of the strong tradition of research 

at Gundersen Lutheran, will establish a new 

cancer research institute bearing their name. 

Dr. Kabara is a renowned biochemistry 

investigator in his own right; both he and his 

wife have experienced the loss of loved ones 

to cancer. At a fall press conference to 

formally announce their gift, the Kabaras 

expressed passionate commitment to 

sponsoring research directed toward specific 

aspects of cancer biology in the hopes of 

uncovering its cause and cure. 

PINK POWER: An estimated 3,700 walkers 

of all ages stepped out with family and friends 

for the 2008 Steppin’ Out in Pink walk in 

support of breast cancer research at the 

Norma J.Vinger Center for Breast Care. 

Record-breaking participation from the 

community—500 more walkers than the 

previous year—raised over $270,000 for the 

cause. Proceeds from this event are designated 

for the Foundation’s Norman L. Gillette, Jr. 

Cancer Research Fellowship endowment. The 

fourth annual Steppin’ Out in Pink event will 

take place on September 12, 2009. 

MILESTONE YEAR: Children’s Miracle 

Network ® , a service of Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation, achieved a fundraising 

milestone in 2008 by surpassing $1 million in 

donations for the first time in their 22 year 

history at Gundersen Lutheran. This success is a 

tribute to loyal national sponsors, and the many 

dedicated organizers of local events and grassroots 

fundraisers that take place year around in 

support of area children and their families. One 

dollar at a time, these generous donations make 

a real difference in addressing childhood medical 

issues throughout our service region. 

PILOT PROGRAM: To address a 

community-wide need for estate planning 

education, the Foundation’s board of directors 

approved a new program that offers 

complimentary, confidential estate planning 

services to Foundation benefactors. The firm of 

Thompson and Associates, based in Brentwood, 

Tennessee, has been retained for their wellorganized 

and thoughtful approach to helping 

couples and individuals develop estate plans 

customized to reflect personal values and 

objectives. In the long run, it is hoped that this 

type of planning assistance will encourage more 

community philanthropy overall. 

FOUNDATION OFFICES MOVE: 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

moved to a handsome new suite of offices on 

one of the busiest corridors in the medical 

center, i.e., the third floor between the main 

clinic and hospital. Completed last spring, the 

project presented a unique opportunity to 

bring personnel working within the 

Foundation’s mission—medical education, 

research, development, and administration— 

into a unified space for the first time.

2008 MEDICAL EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS 

RESIDENT ENROLLMENT: 

In 2008, the Foundation proudly celebrated 

the graduation of 29 residents and welcomed 

31 new residents to Gundersen Lutheran. 

The seven residency programs and one 

fellowship program—Internal Medicine, 

General Surgery, Transitional Year, Oral and 

Maxillofacial Surgery, Podiatric Medicine and 

Surgery, Pharmacy Practice, Sports Medicine 

Physical Therapy, and Minimally Invasive 

Bariatric Surgery Fellowship—continue to 

attract a maximum enrollment of program 

participants. 

NEW CME STANDARDS: 

In preparation for becoming the first 

healthcare organization in Wisconsin to be 

evaluated according to new accreditation 

standards for continuing medical education 

(CME), the Foundation completed a 2008 

self-study of our CME program. Evidence of 

a direct linkage between continuing medical 

education and assessment of practice 

performance goals is required under the 

new standards. Our successful site visit took 

place in January, 2009, earning program 

re-accreditation for another 4 years. 

ACCREDITATION SITE VISIT: 

Gundersen Lutheran’s oldest postgraduate 

medical education program, the Oral and 

Maxillofacial Surgery Residency, underwent its 

accreditation site visit in May 2008, and 

earned re-accreditation for another five years. 

NATIONAL PA EXAMS: 

The UW-La Crosse/Gundersen Lutheran/ 

Mayo Physician’s Assistant (PA) Training 

Program graduated its third Master’s level class 

in May, 2008. For the fourth time, our 

graduates—as a group—scored above the 

90th percentile on the Physician Assistant 

National Certifying Examination, compared 

with the other 145 physician assistant training 

programs in the United States. 

RESIDENCY PERFORMANCE: 

For the sixth consecutive year, the Foundation’s 

internal medicine residents (as a group) 

scored above the 88th percentile on the 2008 

In-Training Examination, when compared with 

all other internal medicine residency programs 

across the United States. Further, over the last 

six years, our Internal Medicine Residency 

program graduates have achieved a board 

certification rate of 100 percent. Also in 

2008, the American Board of Surgery (ABS) 

announced that the Gundersen Lutheran 

General Surgery Residency Program is one of 

eight (8) general surgery residency programs 

in the nation whose graduates have passed 

both the written and oral ABS examinations 

on their first attempt during the last six years. 

Over the past 14 years, all of our General 

Surgery Residency program graduates have 

passed both the written and oral ABS 

examinations on their first attempt. 

UNDERGRAD CLERKSHIPS: 

In the area of undergraduate medical education, 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation 

continues to strengthen our relationship with 

the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of 

Medicine and Public Health (UW-SMPH) by 

serving as the organization’s Western Academic 

Campus. In 2008, Gundersen Lutheran hosted 

147 third-year UW-SMPH medical students 

participating in anesthesiology, general surgery, 

internal medicine, pediatrics, and primary care 

“core clerkships.” These rotations continue to 

rank high compared to other clinical sites in the 

state—both in student satisfaction and also in 

student performance on the clerkship 

examinations. Gundersen Lutheran physician 

Kyla Lee, MD, director of the internal medicine 

clerkship, was honored with a special teaching 

award by the UW-SMPH Class of 2008.

2008 RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS 

MICROBIOLOGY RESEARCH: The 

laboratory team led by Steve Callister, PhD 

maintained its reputation as a recognized 

leader in Lyme disease research, as well as in 

the development of molecular diagnostic 

testing for infectious diseases. In 2008, their 

innovative work on a new generation canine 

Lyme disease vaccine resulted in a host of 

activity, including USDA release approvals, a 

patent application, and a formalized 

development agreement with a commercial 

company. Even further visibility was achieved 

through published research results, review 

articles, and keynote appearances at several 

national conferences. 

NEW LAB OPENS: A new cancer 

research laboratory, created to coordinate 

basic science cancer research with Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Center for Cancer and Blood 

Disorders, opened in October under the 

direction of Carl Simon Shelley, DPhil. 

Dr. Shelley comes to Gundersen Lutheran 

with more than 20 years of experience as a 

researcher at Harvard Medical School and has 

participated in numerous national and 

international research collaborations. Through 

his research, Dr. Shelley expects not only to 

better understand fundamental biologic 

principles, but also to identify new therapeutic 

targets that can be used in the fight against an 

array of pathologies. 

COLLABORATIVE RESEARCH: 

Departmental staff supports research 

throughout the organization by providing 

assistance with study design, data collection, 

biostatistical analysis, and manuscript editing 

and preparation. Additional dedicated staff is 

provided for the departments of Surgery and 

Cardiology, the Norma J. Vinger Center for 

Breast Care and the Center for Cancer and 

Blood Disorders. Beyond Gundersen 

Lutheran’s walls, collaborative research 

opportunities are pursued through consortia 

like the Wisconsin Network for Health 

Research (WNHR). 

CLINICAL TRIAL SERVICES: An experienced 

clinical research staff, plus a committed and 

reliable patient population, are two reasons why 

pharmaceutical companies choose to conduct 

clinical trials at Gundersen Lutheran. In 2008, a 

total of 150 participants were enrolled in 25-30 

ongoing research studies of new medications, 

treatments and devices, helping researchers 

determine their safety and effectiveness. 

SUMMER RESEARCH FELLOWS: 

This year the Foundation’s Department of 

Research hosted 14 college students selected 

for the A.C.V. Elston, III, MD Summer 

Research Fellows Program. These 13-week 

fellowships allow students to gain first-hand 

research experience through active involvement 

in an ongoing research project. Working 

alongside Gundersen Lutheran mentors from 

a wide range of departments, summer fellows 

contribute to the body of science and medical 

information that improves clinical practice. 

Many are in the process of submitting the results 

of their studies for publication. 

PUBLICATION ACTIVITY: Foundationsponsored 

research, under the leadership of 

William Agger, MD, produced a broad range 

of research and scholarly activity in 2008. 

Fifty-eight papers, two books and nine book 

chapters, and 62 online articles were 

published during the year. In addition, 

Foundation researchers reviewed manuscripts 

for a number of top-tier journals and made over 

100 local, state, national, and international 

presentations last year. A complete listing of

2008 COMMUNITY HEALTH OUTREACH HIGHLIGHTS 

GRANT ACTIVITY: In 2008, the 

Foundation made more than 750 grants 

totaling $1,300,150 through its two granting 

entities: the Children’s Miracle Network ® 

Trustees’ Committee and the Grant 

Allocations Committee. Through educational 

programs, health screenings, wellness 

partnerships, and other hands-on interaction, 

these efforts reach thousands of high-risk 

individuals and members of underserved 

communities within the Gundersen Lutheran 

service area. 

HEALTH LITERACY 

COLLABORATION: When important 

health care information is communicated using 

medical jargon and unclear language that 

exceeds a person’s literacy skills, unsafe care 

and unnecessary costs can be the result. To 

raise awareness of health literacy problems, 

Gundersen Lutheran and the La Crosse Area 

Community Literacy Coalition launched a joint 

regional education and information project. 

This collaboration, Great Rivers Partners for 

Health-e People, is funded by the Foundation 

and additional grants from the National 

Library of Medicine and the Southwest 

Wisconsin Area Health Education Center. 

The project has already drawn queries from 

healthcare organizations nationally for its 

impact on treatment outcomes, patient safety 

and satisfaction. 

MEANINGFUL VOLUNTEERISM: 

With the help of grants from the Foundation 

and other community organizations in 2008, 

the Hillview Greenhouse Life Center was 

converted from a commercial business to a 

non-profit organization with the unique goal 

of providing meaningful experiences for older 

people in the La Crosse and surrounding 

community. The Hillview Greenhouse Life 

Center grows organic produce year-round 

that is sold through area food cooperatives 

and restaurants. Every day, 10 to 12 older 

adult volunteers spend their time working in 

the greenhouse, giving them a sense of 

purpose and community. 

PREVENTING CHILDHOOD INJURY: 

Two preventable causes of childhood injury 

were the focus of a community workshop 

series sponsored by the Foundation and Family 

Resources, Inc., in 2008. Over 200 area child 

care providers and new parents received 

comprehensive training in the prevention of 

Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) and Sudden 

Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) with the goal of 

reducing occurrences through education. 

MUSIC THERAPY PROJECT: A growing 

base of published research extols the positive 

results of music therapy on the human body 

and mind. Research has explored music 

therapy’s effect on cognitive and behavioral 

disorders in young children; another area that 

has received attention is lifestyle changes that 

impact seniors. In 2008, a Foundation grant 

helped initiate a pilot project to study the 

effectiveness of music therapy in coordination 

with cancer and end-of-life care at Gundersen 

Lutheran. The music therapy program offers 

family centered care for children, adolescents 

and adults being treated in the Cancer and 

Blood Disorders Center and the Gundersen 

At Home - Hospice Program. 

SAFE HAVEN CREATED: Until recently, 

persons living with mental illness in La Crosse 

County lacked a place that offered integrated 

social recreational programs or facilities to meet, 

develop a support system, or work on common 

issues. Grant support from the Foundation 

helped launch the Recovery Avenue (RAVE), 

a drop in center operated by Independent 

Living Resources, Inc., to provide a safe and 

comfortable place that meets the needs of 

this population.

provides free basic medical care for the poor and 

uninsured.

in communities throughout our service region.

BEREAVEMENT & ADVANCE CARE PLANNING SERVICES 

ONLINE LEARNING: New technology 

made it possible for the department to deliver 

Respecting Choices ® learning online for the 

first full year in 2008. The blended approach, 

combining online education with face-to-face 

presentations, is state-of-the-art. The enhanced 

technology exceeded expectations by attracting 

926 online learners this year alone. 

RESEARCH FOCUS: In 2008, Bernard 

(Bud) Hammes, PhD, and Linda Briggs, MS, MA, 

RN took part in six research projects that will 

result in significant findings being reported in the 

literature in 2009 or 2010. The department is 

also sponsoring three bereavement-related 

research projects, with Rana Limbo, PhD, RN, 

CNS-BC, as principal investigator. 

NEW COURSE OFFERINGS: The team 

designed and implemented two new Respecting 

Choices advance care planning courses, Disease 

Specific Patient-Centered Advance Care 

Planning (DS-PCACP) and Physician Order for 

Life-sustaining Treatment (POLST). Each is 

expected to meet an important need for 

learners in the years to come. Gundersen 

Lutheran staff involved with Connected Care 

participated in DS-PCACP training and are now 

incorporating these skills into their practice. 

EDUCATION PARTNERING: In 

cooperation with the Wisconsin Stillbirth 

Service Program at the University of Wisconsin- 

Madison, the department developed perinatal 

bereavement education specifically for genetic 

counseling students. It was presented twice in 

2008: once in Madison with participants from 

three regional universities (Universities of 

Wisconsin and Minnesota, Northwestern) and 

again in Boston for students from Boston 

University, Sarah Lawrence College, Brandeis 

University, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine, and 

Arcadia University. 

AVENUES FOR GIVING 

There are many ways for you to support the work and mission of Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Gifts may be designated for the Foundation’s 

endowment funds or to benefit a specific program area of your choosing. Please call the Development office at (608) 775-6600 for more information. 

CASH GIFTS: A gift of cash is the simplest 

way to support the Foundation. Cash contributions 

in any amount, at any time, including gifts for 

memorials, tributes and the annual fund (Heritage 

Society), are fully tax-deductible for federal income 

tax purposes. A self-addressed stamped envelope 

is enclosed for your convenience. 

REAL ESTATE: Gifts of appreciated real 

estate are like gifts of appreciated securities. 

When property has been owned for more than 

one year, the fair market value may be deducted 

as a charitable contribution while avoiding capital 

gains taxes. Certain arrangements can allow you 

to live in or use the property for the rest of your 

life, or the joint lives of you and your spouse, 

before passing the asset on to the Foundation 

through a life estate agreement. 

SECURITIES: When you transfer 

appreciated stocks or bonds to the Foundation, 

you can avoid capital gains tax and secure an 

income tax deduction for the security’s full fair 

market value. This offers an excellent 

opportunity to make larger gifts than you ever 

thought possible, particularly when gifting highly 

appreciated securities with a very low cost basis. 

BEQUESTS: You may easily create a legacy 

of generosity by leaving a portion of your estate 

to the Foundation through your will or from 

your living trust. This includes gifts of cash, stock, 

property, real estate, or a gift of the residue and 

remainder of your estate when other bequests 

have been fulfilled. Your gift becomes a part of 

the Foundation at the time your will is probated, 

and your estate will qualify for a federal estate 

tax charitable deduction.

CHARITABLE TRUSTS & ANNUITIES: 

Lifetime charitable trusts and gift annuities are 

versatile gift options available to meet individual 

circumstances and needs. Often they can 

provide an increased income stream for you 

and others you designate, have beneficial tax 

advantages, and significantly help the Foundation. 

With your personal, financial and charitable 

goals in mind, our Foundation staff will work 

with you and your advisors in structuring a gift 

of maximum benefit to you. 

LIFE INSURANCE: Life insurance policies 

can be given in several different ways. Donors 

may designate the Foundation as a beneficiary 

or an owner of the policy. There are special tax 

advantages for the gifting of an existing policy, 

a paid-up policy or a newly purchased policy.

2008 FINANCIAL SUMMARY 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation exists to enhance and support quality healthcare by emphasizing the three areas within our mission: medical 

education and health/wellness education, clinically based research, and community health outreach. The success of 2008 is a tribute to the dedicated efforts 

of Gundersen Lutheran healthcare professionals, whose expert and highly-personalized approach to patient care inspires benefactors to support this mission. 

Generous support from donors made 2008 a year of progress and accomplishment. 

ENDOWMENT FUND 2004-2008: 

At the close of 2008, the Foundation’s 

endowment fund had decreased slightly due to 

negative investment returns. Growth in donor 

restricted endowment gifts was a result of a 

major gift for oncology research and funds 

raised from the 2008 Steppin’ Out in Pink walk 

in support of the Norman L. Gillette, Jr. Cancer 

Research Fellowship. The endowment fund 

provides a permanent source of investment 

earnings to sustain the Foundation’s mission.

The Foundation, like many other charities, 

experienced large investment losses during 

2008. We are pleased to report that despite 

these tough economic times, giving to the 

Foundation remained strong. The Foundation 

received close to $5 million in philanthropic 

contributions in 2008. Endowment and estate 

gifts helped the Foundation reach this level.

Many grateful patients choose to make a gift for 

a specific purpose to help maintain the high 

quality of care they received at Gundersen 

Lutheran. In 2008, the Foundation received a

Medical Foundation is not immune to 

Wall Street’s woes. Like other charitable 

organizations throughout the country, 

we will be facing many challenges in the 

months ahead due to the downturn in 

financial markets. Prudent stewardship of 

our resources is more important than ever

that going lean and digital makes sense from 

both a fiscal and environmental perspective.

Gifts range from $1 to $199: You will 

find over 4,600 donors listed in this giving 

category, making them by far the largest 

single group of Foundation benefactors. We 

are proud that 1,120 of them are first-time 

Heritage Society donors who have chosen 

to make a difference in the health of our 

community through their charitable gifts. 

2008 MEMORIAL GIFTS: It is an honor 

to be the chosen recipient of special gifts 

made in remembrance of friends or loved 

ones who are no longer here to carry on 

their own legacy of caring. In 2008, Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation received 2,500 

such gifts memorializing 876 individuals. 

2008 HONORARIUM GIFTS: In 

2008, many donors chose to express their 

appreciation and regard for specific 

individuals or Gundersen Lutheran 

departments by honoring them through 

a charitable gift to the Foundation. We 

invite you to view the names of 314 

honorees who inspired tribute gifts this year. 

GIFTS-IN-KIND: Each year, the 

Foundation and/or Children’s Miracle 

Network ® receives a variety of in-kind 

contributions from individuals, businesses 

and organizations throughout our service 

region. Donated items and services are 

frequently the thoughtful response to 

specific needs. The 67 donors recognized in 

2008 include those whose in-kind gifts to 

Children’s Miracle Network were valued at 

$250 or more. 

CHILDREN’S MIRACLE NETWORK ® 

PARTNERS: Our 2008 Children’s Miracle 

Network fundraising efforts were successful 

in large part due to more than 180 partners 

on this list. Representing a diverse group of 

businesses, organizations and individuals, they 

are united in their compassionate concern 

for kids, allowing Children’s Miracle Network 

to be a source of support when families 

need help the most.
