The world of philanthropy is fortunate to be populated by problemsolvers.
They are the ones inspired by the question: What needs to be
done differently? They understand the first step in solving anything, no
matter how complex, is finding bright spots of hope for positive change.
We’ve applied that spirit of common purpose to this issue of Pathfinders,
illuminating “bright spots” of activity where Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation is rising to the challenge of some very tough healthcare
issues. For instance:
• Nearly 28% of Wisconsin citizens live in rural areas, yet only
11% of physicians have rural practices. How can medical
education change that?
• Only 16% of lung cancer cases in this country are diagnosed at
its earliest and most curable stage. How can medical research
change that?
• Wisconsin has the 8 th highest rate of youth suicide among all
states. How can community outreach efforts change that?
Our Foundation’s mission provides a broad umbrella for problemsolving,
thanks to the support we receive from you, our like-minded

Future Rural
Practice
The Wisconsin Academy
for Rural Medicine (WARM)
In the first year, Gundersen
Lutheran clinical training will
include four regional sites

According to the U.S. Office of Management
and Budget, over 51 million Americans live in
rural areas and comprise 20% of the country’s
population. By contrast, less than 11% of the
nation’s physicians practice in rural areas,
which means over 20 million rural residents
live in areas experiencing a shortage of
physicians required to meet their basic health
needs. As rural physicians retire, workforce
shortages are projected to increase.
Solutions to address health disparities in rural
communities require thoughtful plans to increase the
number of trained professionals. Expansion of medical
education provides an opportunity to reconsider how the
physician workforce can be aligned with national and local
needs. In Wisconsin, a new program at the University
of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health
(UW-SMPH) has been launched to encourage its medical
school graduates to practice in rural areas of the state.
The Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM)
is a direct response by medical educators to address
the shortage of physicians in rural Wisconsin. At full
maturity, the program will increase the UW-SMPH class
size by 25 students per year.
WARM is a “school within a school” at the UW-SMPH,
designed to create a stimulating learning environment
and curriculum that utilizes rural training sites as much
as possible. Admission is limited to Wisconsin residents,
and students must have a strong commitment to practice
medicine in rural Wisconsin. As the Western Academic

Campus for the UW-SMPH, Gundersen Lutheran is one
of three Wisconsin health systems to participate in the
clinical training of WARM students. David H. Chestnut,
MD, director of medical education for Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation, has been a strong
advocate for the development of the WARM program.
Both Dr. Chestnut and Kelly Hodgson Kline, MD, have
participated in the WARM student admissions process.
The WARM curriculum, developed in part by
Gundersen Lutheran family physician Kimberly Lansing,
MD, PhD, features an innovative two-year longitudinal
learning experience focusing on the knowledge, skills
and attitudes required to be a successful rural physician.
“We want them to experience what the real life of a rural
physician will be like,” says Dr. Lansing. “Our WARM
students are going to see what everybody does in a rural
clinic and be an integral part of it, five days a week,
following a patient over the continuum of care.” Students
will also become part of the local community, covering

nursing home visitations and
football games on Friday
nights, making health-related
presentations to civic clubs,
and be adopted into the social
scene by local families.
Growing up in a rural community is considered a strong predictor of
future rural medical practice; however, other factors such as location of
residency program also influence where a physician chooses to practice.
As one of the WARM clinical sites, Gundersen Lutheran may benefit
when it comes to recruiting these students as future residents. “We’re
hoping it will be an amazing experience for them, and different than
they would have in a traditional program,” explains Dr. Lansing. “If
these students have a good experience in one of our regional clinics,
and feel it’s a great community, they may eventually return to that
community to practice medicine. Some may even choose to complete
their residency training at Gundersen Lutheran after having a chance
to interact with the residents in our surgery, internal medicine and
transitional residency programs.”
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation continues to demonstrate a
strong commitment to providing appropriate curriculum and experiences
in formal training—both at the graduate and undergraduate level—that
will foster successful practice in rural settings. Even so, recruiting and
retaining physicians to rural areas is problematic for several reasons.
Rural communities often lack access to airports and major teaching
facilities. There can be difficulty in providing employment opportunities
for spouses and educational opportunities for children. The range of
clinical skills required in the rural practitioner is often broader than
their urban counterpart, simply because the caseload is so varied.
Given this combination of factors, Dr. Lansing concedes that WARM
students “may not all end up where we want them to go.” However, as
a medical educator she is optimistic about the strong sense of social
responsibility she sees in these students. Despite the challenges of rural
practice, “these students have a real interest in serving the underserved
who need their help.”
Gundersen Lutheran’s first cohort of eight WARM students will
begin their clinical clerkship training in July, 2010. Clinical training
for the WARM students will be divided between Gundersen Lutheran
rural regional sites and the La Crosse and Onalaska campuses. The
first cohort of WARM students will be assigned to Gundersen Lutheran
regional clinics and affiliated hospitals in Decorah (Iowa), Prairie du
Chien, Tomah, and Whitehall, and over time it is expected that
additional regional sites will participate in the program. Dr. Chestnut
stated that “this will result in further development and maturation of the
medical student education infrastructure at Gundersen Lutheran.”

Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 not-for-profit
corporation operated in the public
interest. There is no corporate stock
and no shareholders to receive a
profit. The Foundation is operated
by a volunteer board of directors,
people who live and work in the
communities Gundersen Lutheran
serves. As a not-for-profit organization,
the Foundation can accept donations
and frequently does receive them from
people who wish to offer a special
“thanks” for the care they, a friend or a
loved one has received.
Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation takes its responsibility as
a not-for-profit very seriously. When
donors choose to make a gift to the
Foundation, they are making a decision
that doesn’t just support their health
but supports the health and well-being
of the entire community. All gifts are
kept in separate funds based on the
donor’s wishes and safeguard the
programs and services that matter
most to them.
Each year, Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation gives back to
the community directing its focus
to medical education, research and
community health outreach. Our
donors make gifts in support of a
wide variety of charitable purposes.

A Sampler of Funds and Purposes
Carilee Fund
The Carilee Fund was created to provide resources to community
members experiencing obstacles to leaving abusive relationships. The
fund provides monetary assistance to anyone working with an agency
that provides services for domestic violence. Since going “operational”
in October 2006, the Carilee Fund has provided financial support to
hundreds of survivors.
Diabetes Program
Learning about and living with diabetes is a journey best taken with
others. This special fund supports our healthcare team as they work
with patients to learn all they can about the best ways to care for their
diabetes. Working together, patients find that living a full and active life
while taking care of their diabetes can be a reality.
Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute Fund
For more than 40 years, Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute has
provided exceptional heart care for patients of all ages. Contributors
know that hospitals are not all the same when it comes to heart care;
their gifts help Gundersen Lutheran earn national recognition for
superior quality, care and results.
Kaitlin’s Table Fund (see story on page 6)
This fund was established to provide resources for innovative
programming for youth and young adults dealing with depression and
mental health issues. With the goal of moving frontline therapists and
peer-to-peer counselors into community outreach locations, “Kaitlin’s
Table” will serve this vulnerable population by improving access to
quality care throughout the Gundersen Lutheran service region.
Pastoral Care Fund
Grounded in faith and hope, the Pastoral Care department helps patients,
families and medical staff to find peace, comfort, hope and healing
during life's most difficult times. Contributions enhance our ability to
provide emotional and spiritual support to patients and their families
regardless of their faith tradition.
Women's Health Fund
A strong, independent woman in today's world requires good health.
Gundersen Lutheran's Women's Health services are dedicated to the
enhancement of a woman's overall well-being. The Women’s Health
Fund’s primary goal is to provide women with health information and
clinical services that promote healthy living practices.

A Community Response
to Adolescent Mental
Health Needs

depression in 2007.
It is a sad and shocking statistic: Suicide
is the second most common cause of death
for Wisconsin youth, accounting for more
than 15% of all deaths among youth in our
state. On average, one young person dies by
suicide each week in Wisconsin.
According to research by the National Institute of
Mental Health, half of all lifetime cases of mental
illness begin by age 14 where social stigmas and lack of
healthcare access can delay diagnosis and treatment. It is
not uncommon that a decade or more may pass before this
vulnerable population receives treatment, leaving a critical
gap where untreated disorders can lead to more severe and
difficult to treat mental illnesses. Or to tragedy, like that
experienced by Dr. Todd and Debra Mahr in 2007, when
their 20-year old daughter Kaitlin lost her battle with
depression and died of an accidental overdose.
“Our life changed on that day,” says Dr. Mahr, a
pediatric allergist at Gundersen Lutheran and member of
the Board of Directors for Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation. “As we came out of our fog of grief, Deb and

I started talking about what we could
do to shine a light on adolescent
mental health issues and help remove
the stigma.” They met with the
Foundation to create a special fund
in Kaitlin’s memory, established with
memorial gifts to provide financial
support for programming aimed at
youth and young adults dealing with
depression and mental health issues.
With an emphasis on collaboration,
“Kaitlin’s Table” is designed to break
down barriers and reach out to youth
and adolescents who are struggling
with life’s challenges. The approach
involves trained volunteers, including
community members, students
and peers, and behavioral health
professionals, to provide appropriate
support and care referrals in a
non-threatening manner.
The Mahr family (Todd, Deb
and son Sam) began spearheading
monthly meetings with local
mental health professionals who
shared their interest in developing
a more coordinated community
effort to connect at-risk adolescents
with appropriate health services.
Representatives from Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation,
Gundersen Lutheran’s Behavioral
Health department, the La Crosse
Community Foundation, the Mental
Health Coalition of the Greater
La Crosse Area, and local chapter of
the National Association of Mental
Illness were some of the key people
who came to the table for discussion
and planning of this innovative
mental health initiative.
Over the past two years, the
“Kaitlin’s Table” group has
pursued additional grant funding
and been the driving force behind
several notable accomplishments:
» Successfully obtained $12,000 in
planning funds through the American
Academy of Pediatrics, the first
grant of its kind awarded in this area.
The Community Access To Child
Health (CATCH) program provides
grants in amounts up to $12,000 for
pediatricians to develop innovative,
community-based initiatives that
increase children’s access to medical
care or to specific health services
not otherwise available. The CATCH
funds enabled “Kaitlin’s Table” to
meet regularly, to convene a series of
focus group meetings with area youth
to listen to their views on the type
of teen health model that would best
serve them, and to hold a community
forum on the problems surrounding
adolescent mental health in our
region.
» In keeping with the goals of
Kaitlin’s Table, and with support
from Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation and the La Crosse
Community Foundation, NAMI
(National Alliance on Mental Illness)
of La Crosse County is offering two
new programs in the community.
NAMI Parents & Teachers as Allies
is a teacher in-service designed to
help families and school professionals
identify the key warning signs of
early-onset mental illness in children
and adolescents in our schools.
This program has reached nearly
200 educators in the La Crosse
community. NAMI Basics is a free,
six-session course for parents and
other primary caregivers of children
and adolescents living with mental
illness. Taught by parents who have
lived similar experiences with their
own children, it allows families to
connect to one another while learning
about mental illness. Two sessions
are planned in 2010; the first began in
February.
» With the goal of developing a
vibrant, sustainable drop-in center
for middle and high school youth,
“Kaitlin’s Table” is involved in a

step for early intervention. The
American Academy of Family
Physicians has developed a
two-question initial screening
test, which has been successful in
identifying more than 90% of patients
with major depression.
During the past month:

pleasure in doing things?
If you or someone you know answers
‘yes’ to either of these questions,
you may be experiencing signs of
depression and would likely benefit
from further assessment. There are
many options for effectively treating
depression. Speak with your primary
care provider or a Behavioral Health
professional to help determine what
can work best for you. Websites such
as nami.org offer information about
depression and other mental illness.

About Kaitlin (1987–2007)
Kaitlin Mahr was one of the valedictorians of Onalaska High School’s Class of
2005, an enthusiastic and energetic student who loved school and learning.
She was a junior honors-level English major at Lawrence University in
Appleton, Wisconsin, before her tragic death in 2007. Hers is not the “face”
most people would associate with serious depression; changing the face of
mental illness recognition, diagnosis and treatment is a primary goal of the
“Kaitlin’s Table” initiative. “Kaitlin was very honest about her disease once we
had a diagnosis,” says her mother Deb Mahr. “She never tried to hide that
she had bipolar disorder. She informed her professors at Lawrence University
of her disease so they would be aware of what she was dealing with. Her
studies were always very important to her, even when she was dealing with
the worst of her illness. I have to admit that until Katie was diagnosed, I
didn’t know much about mental illness. I realize now how important it is for
families to have support and knowledge so we can better understand what
the person is going through. We are trying to be her voice now, to help
break down some of the stigma surrounding mental illness.”

community project to reinvigorate
La Crosse’s Teen Center, currently
run by the YMCA. Sarah Johnson,
MS, the Behavioral Health therapist
leading this initiative for Gundersen
Lutheran, says, “We’re excited to get
more teens using the Center and to be
able to offer them creative prevention
and positive youth development
programs that make use of their
talents and energy.”
» The dialog generated by
“Kaitlin’s Table” participants has
helped create awareness of needs
associated with Gundersen Lutheran’s
current Behavioral Health building,
making it a targeted capital project
within the overall campus renewal

Going forward, Dr. Mahr
anticipates a community-wide
meeting will be planned for
vested partners from health care,
school districts, local colleges
and universities, faith-based
organizations, and area employers
and businesses. The agenda will
focus on results of a youth risk
behavior survey that will provide a
baseline against which progress can
be measured. “That analysis is an
important step in understanding how
big the problem is in our community,”
says Dr. Mahr. “There needs to be a
point in time where you say you’re
going to improve, and identify what
you’re going to measure.” This
innovative community approach to
adolescent mental health has the
potential to serve as a model for other
communities struggling with similar
tragedies. The community support
and awareness being fostered by
“Kaitlin’s Table” is the key.

Appreciation for Excellence in Nursing Care
A caring nurse can make a lifelong impression on
patients and families coping with illness or injury. At
Gundersen Lutheran, more than 1,400 nurses touch
thousands of lives, day in and day out, as they demonstrate
their passion for patient care.
Spring is a time where that dedication to nursing
excellence is celebrated in a variety of ways. National
Nurses Day, May 6, was created for the express purpose
of recognizing the valuable contributions nurses and
the nursing profession make to our community. Patients
and families often ask how they can say “thank you” for
the outstanding nursing care they receive at Gundersen
Lutheran. A gift to the Caring Tribute to Nurses
program at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation
is a meaningful way to honor our nurses, especially for
National Nurses Day.
Our Caring Tribute to Nurses program recognizes and
promotes excellence in nursing practice, education, and
research through three designated funds:
• Legacy of Nursing Scholarship Fund (see sidebar)
• Dahlberg Lecture Fund
• Nursing Education and Research Fund
Gifts in support of these funds help advance the careers
and professional development of Gundersen Lutheran
nurses by providing opportunities for collaboration,
research, training, and other initiatives that enhance
quality patient care.

Gundersen Lutheran has been educating
nurses for more than a century, taking an active
role in helping nurses develop their full potential
as learners, teachers, and healers. In 2009, the
Foundation’s Legacy of Nursing Scholarship Fund

Lutheran nurses who are working to continue their
education and become certified in specialty areas.

“I am very thankful and honored to receive the Foundation’s first Heritage Nursing
Scholarship. For the next year and a half, I am commuting weekly to Oshkosh to
earn my master’s degree in nursing as a Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL). I believe this
role will transform healthcare by working with frontline staff to ensure patients
benefit from the latest innovations in care delivery. Because I am enrolled in the full
time program with a lot of school responsibility, this financial support is helping
me to be able to continue to work part time. The scholarship money bought books
and supplies I need for this spring 2010 semester and will fund my fuel and room
and board needs as well.”

and to community functions. We grew up with 4-H, so we
learned about service.”
“Working with the residents and seeing the medical
education part of the Foundation. We work with those
medical residents day to day, and we would be with them
for years—whatever the length of their residency. Some go
on to stay on staff here. So that was a big plus; we knew the
Foundation supported all those physicians in training. I also
appreciate all the other things they do for the hospital and
for the community.”
“When it came to settling my parents’ estate, everything
was straightforward and easy to take care of. I wanted it
to be that easy with my estate, and didn’t want it all to be
in my sister’s name because of the tax consequences. You
have to think in terms of paying it forward: the Foundation
has been good to us; we can be good back to them as well.
That’s the bottom line. We both have been given a lot, and
we both want to give back. It’s not like we’re rich, but we’re

Lung Cancer Research:
Exciting and Promising
Editor’s Note: In our 2009 year-end issue of Pathfinders, we announced the lung cancer research
partnership between Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation and the University of Wisconsin’s
Carbone Cancer Center in Madison. A joint fundraising campaign is underway to create a
permanent lung cancer research endowment that will fund a full-time lung cancer research
professorship in Madison, as well as lung cancer research taking place in La Crosse at the
Foundation’s Cancer Research Lab, under the direction of Dr. Carl Simon Shelley. In this issue, we
introduce Pathfinders readers to the promising research already in progress by Dr. Shelley and his
research team, Dr. Qiangwei Fu and Mr. Steven Cash.

A research open house sponsored
last summer by Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation gave
visitors an opportunity to walk
through the Health Science Center
and see the facilities where our
talented research scientists do their
work. These guests might not have
paid much attention to a relatively
small piece of equipment called a
hypoxia chamber, which is used for
tissue culture work in tumor cell
research. But that chamber is at the
center of some exciting discoveries
emerging from the laboratory of
Dr. Carl Simon Shelley, director
of cancer research for Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation.
The hypoxia chamber is significant
in that it allows for the automatic
control of oxygen, temperature, and
carbon dioxide levels, all of which
can be set to mimic the conditions of
the human body. Cancer cell lines,
contained within a petri dish, are put
in the chamber so they can grow in the
same way they do in a human body.
It’s an important tool for testing and
observing the effect of experimental
treatments on actual cancer cells.
The research undertaken by
Dr. Shelley, Dr. Fu and Mr. Cash
is aimed at determining the basic
molecular mechanisms that control
cancer cell adhesion such that new
therapeutic targets can be developed.
Their recent experiments have focused
on suppressing a specific protein
component of cellular membrane
coverings that functions like Teflon.
This covering deflects attacks on the
cancer by natural killer cells, thus
allowing the cancer to grow.
Can targeting this protein in
lung cancer cells make them
more susceptible to destruction by
natural killer cells and potentially
limit lung cancer development?
The experimental evidence being
compiled by Dr. Shelley, Dr. Fu and
Mr. Cash indicates yes! Following
the initial success of testing their
hypothesis on lung cancer cells in
a hypoxia chamber, they are now
preparing to begin the next phase of
their research in live mouse models
this spring.
So far, the results they are seeing
are very promising and represent
an important new discovery that
has yet to be seen or published in
any research literature. It is with
great excitement that Dr. Shelley,
Dr. Fu and Mr. Cash are preparing
their paper for publication later this
summer. “For a new cancer research
lab established only 18 months
ago, this is a truly remarkable
achievement,” says Robyn Tanke,
CFRE, senior director of development
for Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation. “What we’re doing now
in the area of lung cancer research
has the potential to be transformative.
The larger our lung cancer research
endowment becomes, the more
resources we’ll have for these and
other lung cancer research projects
Dr. Shelley is pursuing at Gundersen
Lutheran.”

A Champion for Wisconsin Kids
In many ways, Wyatt Peterson has been a
champion since the day he was born. The four-year
old son of Aaron and Angie Peterson of Holmen was born
with spina bifida, a developmental birth defect caused
by the incomplete closure of the vertebrae overlying
the spinal cord. Just seven hours after Wyatt’s delivery,
Gundersen Lutheran neurosurgeon Drew Sullivan, MD
operated to close the opening in his back to prevent
further damage to the nervous tissue. Wyatt’s condition
has required multiple surgeries, most recently in January
when he returned to Gundersen Lutheran for repairs to
the bones in his hip and knees.
There is no known cure for nerve damage due to spina
bifida. Wyatt doesn’t have feeling in his legs, but it has
never slowed him down. He loves swimming, playing
baseball and wrestling with his dad and brother. Ongoing
doctor’s visits and therapy sessions are a way of life for
the Peterson family. Through it all, Children’s Miracle
Network ® , a service of Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation, has been there as a source of support. Along
with meal vouchers, Children’s Miracle Network helped
the Petersons purchase Wyatt’s adaptive hand tricycle
and a mobile stander that helps him move more quickly.
Despite everything he’s been through, Wyatt remains
happy and easy going, charming everyone he meets.
It’s hard to envision a more perfect candidate for
the role of Children’s Miracle Network Champion, an
honor bestowed on Wyatt earlier this year through the
“Champions presented by Walmart and Sam’s Club”
program. Wyatt will represent Wisconsin in 2010 as a
national ambassador for the 17 million kids treated each
year at Children’s Miracle Network hospitals. A total of
52 champions—one from each state plus Washington DC
and Puerto Rico—will attend two major national events
that help raise awareness about the work being done at
Children’s Miracle Network hospitals like Gundersen
Lutheran.
In June, Wyatt and his family travel to Washington
DC, where the young ambassador will visit Capitol Hill
to meet with political officials and participate in media
interviews to highlight the importance of Children’s
Miracle Network. In November, the Petersons accompany
Wyatt to the Children’s Miracle Network Celebration
at Walt Disney World, where they’ll meet corporate
and media partners, hospital employees and hundreds
of volunteers. Wyatt’s story is a remarkable example of
what Children’s Miracle Network hospitals do: provide
specialized care for kids that cannot be found elsewhere,
thanks to generous support from the local community.
Heather Gilles, Children’s Miracle Network National
Specialist for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation,
sees Wyatt as a natural ambassador. “He’s so personable
and not afraid of people or being asked questions,” says
Gilles. “Through him, we can raise awareness about
pediatric specialties at Gundersen Lutheran, and also the
unique nature of our Children’s Miracle Network model
for helping families like the Petersons.”
The entire Peterson family, including Wyatt’s parents
and grandparents, look forward to promoting a cause they
care about so deeply. “As parents we try to give Wyatt the
same opportunities as other kids his age,” says his
mother Angie. “The specialized equipment he
needs is extremely expensive and the reality of
financial limitations makes this difficult. We
are fortunate to have benefited from Children’s
Miracle Network; it is an amazing charity that
has helped so many in our community and
families like us are very grateful.”

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation
A Time for Renewal

Executive Director
This is the year—after numerous
years of addressing capital needs
throughout the Gundersen Lutheran
system—that we will be asking
Foundation donors to join us as
we embark on the thoughtful and
comprehensive renewal of our La
Crosse campus. We know that it is
time; the average age of our main
campus is 31 years, with the oldest
building constructed in 1917. Our
medical center in La Crosse serves as
more than just hospital and clinics;
research and education takes place
throughout the campus every day. To
continue to serve our patients well,
significant needs must be addressed
so we may provide our signature
quality care into the future. It is a
campaign dedicated to creating a
better way of doing what we do.
The scope of our campus renewal
focuses on the following significant
needs:
• Enhancing the critical care and
emergency units of the hospital
• Achieving private rooms for
every patient
• Establishing a pediatric
pavilion to provide most
hospital and clinic pediatric
services on one level
• Meeting the expanded and
diverse behavioral health needs
of our community
• Providing equipment and space
for state-of-the-art training of
doctors and nurses
• Securing financial resources
for underfunded research,
especially lung cancer
• Creating a more competitive
setting to attract and retain an
in-demand workforce
• Accomplishing it all with an
emphasis on environmental and
energy awareness.
This campaign will involve the
most extensive building projects in
Gundersen Lutheran history. Through
new construction, renovation and
acquisition of advanced technology
we will realize efficiencies that
improve patient care, staff retention
and recruitment. Most important,
planning has been years in the
making with continuous, careful
involvement of the Board of Directors
to assure funding can be met without
jeopardizing our financial stability.
Such a comprehensive renewal will
take multiple years to accomplish,
with the associated capital campaign
taking place over the next three to
five years. The opportunities for
gifting and fulfillment of pledges will
be quite broad, so that we may offer
individuals the ability to participate
in unique ways to best suit their
needs. We are sensitive to our many
benefactors who wish to safeguard
the wealth they wish to pass on to
members of their family, yet at the
same time wish to be part of such
a milestone moment in Gundersen
Lutheran’s history.
To fully appreciate just how these
renewal plans will create a better
infrastructure for the future, a tour of
our current facilities is more eloquent
than any printed word. Consider this
your open invitation to call me and
discuss our campus renewal plans in

A Personal Experience
with Gratitude

This past year, I had the opportunity
to walk in the shoes of the
grateful patients and family members
who make gifts to Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation in
appreciation of care received. My
mom Maxine was seriously ill when
she was hospitalized here last April,
and ended up having open heart
surgery on April 30, 2009. Those
many weeks she spent in the hospital
truly opened my eyes to the incredible
care teams we have at Gundersen
Lutheran—especially the nurses and
staff who cared for Mom on 6 West
CCU and ICU.
In my years of meeting with
benefactors who support the
Foundation as an expression of
gratitude, I was always touched
by their stories. Now for the first
time I have my own story, my own
personal experience from the patient
perspective. I now understand why
words of thanks are sometimes not
enough. Even as I write this, it is
hard for me to express how close our
family became to Mom’s nurses, or
how deeply affected we continue
to be by the extraordinary care she
receives.
It is almost exactly one year since
Mom’s surgery. She is a regular
patient of the cardiology department’s
Congestive Heart Failure clinic and
doing well. There is no question in my
mind that she wouldn’t be living today
without the care she received here.
When my mother was released
from the hospital to recover from
her surgery, one of the first things
I did is make a personal financial
contribution to our Legacy of Nursing
Scholarship program in honor of the
nurses who cared for Mom. We’ve
since created a special Foundation
brochure (“A Caring Tribute to
Nurses”) to make it easier for all
patients and family members who
wish to make similar gifts. It is a
wonderful way to help Gundersen
Lutheran invest in our great nurses to
maintain nursing excellence.
Partnering Yields Best
Return on Investment

Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation relies on the thoughtful
deliberations of two grant making
committees for decisions about
funding support for communitybased
needs. Grant applications
are carefully reviewed for their
relevance to several priority areas:
the promotion of wellness; access to
primary care; women’s and children’s
health issues; and services for the
elderly and special populations.
Another key factor committee
members look for is the element
of collaboration. Quite simply,
experience tells us that partnering
with other community organizations
and agencies yields the “most bang
for our buck.”
Consider these examples. For
over 18 years, the Foundation
has partnered with CESA #4 and
the La Crosse School District in
sponsoring a spring Math and
Science Expo Series for middle
school students from the area’s
public, private, and parochial schools.
In 2009, 15 school districts and more
than 670 students participated in the
Expo. Support from the Foundation
and other community sponsors
helps fund Gundersen Lutheran’s
4 th Annual Minutes in Motion
community activity challenge, which
runs this year from March 22 through
May 2. Last year, more than 3200
people participated in the challenge
with 54% of participants reporting
they lost weight as a result. The
Coulee Region Retired and Senior
Volunteer Program (RSVP) receives
support from our Foundation for
their Volunteer Driver Program,
which provides individuals a means
of transportation even if they are
unable to drive, do not have access
to a vehicle, or are unable to utilize
other transportation options. The
program doubled in size between
2007 and 2008 and with the current
economy, continues to see an increase
in number of clients and number of
rides requested.
It is always the goal of the
Foundation to invest wisely. The more
lives we touch, the greater the return
on our donors’ investments.

The Gundersen Lutheran
BioBank Initiative
Located on the fifth floor of the Health Science Center is the
Gundersen Lutheran BioBank. Housed in this repository are
tissue and blood samples collected since 1983 from over 6000
patients with diseases such as leukemia, lung cancer, and breast
cancer. Samples from over 1000 additional patients with oncologic
disease are scheduled to be acquired each year for the next 20 years!
The BioBank was established in 2008 by Dr. Jeremiah Andersen,
Dr. Ronald Go, and Dr. Simon Shelley, Director of Hematology/
Oncology Research. A treasure trove of material exists within the
BioBank that is being used by researchers at Gundersen Lutheran
and around the world to better understand how cancer develops and
how it can be cured. The daunting job of supervising the BioBank lies
in the hands of the Research Technologist, Mr. Steven Cash, who is
pictured surrounded by only a fraction of this exciting new resource.

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation at work
Dr. Newcomer Honored by Alma Mater
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation congratulates
our good friend Kermit Newcomer, MD, on receiving the
2009 Distinguished Alumnus Award from his alma mater,
Case Western Reserve University. The award is presented in
recognition of outstanding service by graduates whose work
has made a significant mark in the field of medicine and whose
efforts have brought about distinction for the Case Western
Reserve University School of Medicine.
Dr. Newcomer’s long and distinguished medical career
includes two terms of service (1976–79, 1990–93) as president
and CEO of Gundersen Clinic. Following retirement from
clinical practice in 1995, Dr. Newcomer worked as an
international medical partnership consultant. He and his wife
Barbara remain active members of the La Crosse community,
having served in leadership and volunteer roles in many
civic organizations. In accepting his award, Dr. Newcomer
characterized his medical, community and international
achievements as a series of “team efforts of which I have been
privileged to be a part. It has been an unbelievable journey.”
“Pennies” Adds Dollars
to Paula’s Purse
A cancer diagnosis creates more
than medical and emotional
concerns. Lost work days and extra
expenses often become a source of
financial stress for cancer patients
and their families. That’s why the
Paula’s Purse cancer patient fund
has become such an important
resource for the community—it
helps meet the cost of necessities
such as groceries, heat, housing or
transportation while patients are
undergoing cancer treatment at
Gundersen Lutheran.
On February 6, a major musical
fundraiser was held at the Viterbo
Fine Arts Center to benefit the
Paula’s Purse fund at Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation.
The 2010 version of “Pennies from
Heaven” featured a new show,
a bigger venue, and outstanding
performances by Liz McConahay
Wanfried and Beth Lakmann. Most
important, the enthusiastic audience
successfully raised over $24,500 for
Paula’s Purse.

Decorah Clinic Makes “Gundersen Bridge” a Reality
Since 2006, the city of Decorah, Iowa has been engaged
in a community-wide fundraising campaign to construct
a new 12-mile walking and biking trail. The scenic Trout
Run Trail project is a $5 million endeavor involving a
combination of public funding, state and federal grants,
and private support, with nearly $1 million of the total
raised locally from a variety of sources.
Employees of Gundersen Lutheran’s Decorah Clinic
greeted the campaign as an opportunity to benefit
the health and wellness of the community they serve,
and make a lasting investment in the recreational and
tourism assets of the local economy. With the support of
Gundersen Lutheran and Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation, nearly 100 Gundersen Lutheran employees
successfully raised $50,000 over a three-year period
for the trail’s new “Gundersen Bridge”—a prominent
river crossing located adjacent to the Clinic property at
a main access point for the Trout Run Trail. Gundersen
Lutheran matched their commitment with a $50,000
corporate gift to the project.
The names of employees who made personal gifts to
the recently completed fundraising campaign were
presented at a celebratory event last fall and will be
permanently displayed thereafter. “We’re proud to
support our local community in such a visible way,” says
Trudy Belay, Decorah Clinic manager. “It’s inspiring
to see so many of our employees working together for
a great cause that will benefit our patients, friends, and
neighbors for many years to come.” Building bridges is
a perfect example of the Foundation’s community health
outreach mission in action.
