dedicated to advancing quality healthcare. 

In 1899, Dr. Adolf Gundersen, founder of Gundersen Clinic, presented a paper 

on the surgical treatment of appendicitis to the Norwegian Medical Society. 

The importance of improving human health through the sharing of medical 

knowledge was embedded in our organizational culture even then, and 

continues to grow and flourish today. 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation’s commitment to research takes many 

forms. The ultimate purpose is to identify treatments or practices that will prove 

to be the best investments in future human health. In this issue of Pathfinders, 

you’ll meet patients, physicians, nurses and scientists—people who are involved 

in clinical trials, community collaborations, awareness campaigns and laboratory 

research. All are committed to making a difference by putting research to work 

and contributing to the next medical breakthrough on the horizon. 

The reality of research is that there is rarely a single answer to any given 

question. Contributing to the overall body of science and knowledge that leads 

to breakthroughs in the practice of medicine is the mission of every medical 

researcher, and every medical research organization. Dr. Adolf lived that 

mission, and so does the Foundation that proudly shares his name.

Advances in 

Alzheimer’s 

Research 

Neurologist Janelle Cooper, MD, has been 

practicing at Gundersen Lutheran for a 

year and says, “The only regret I have is 

that I didn’t come here ten years sooner.” Her move 

to La Crosse from the Oshkosh area grew out of 

a casual conversation that occurred when she was 

invited here to do grand rounds in 2007. “I knew 

(Neurology department chair) Greg Fischer from 

various neurology conferences,” recalls Dr. Cooper. 

She was also attracted to the mission of Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation and its emphasis on 

education and research. “The Foundation’s mission is 

about all the things I love doing. I could see my work 

would be a much, much better fit here.” Support from 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation enables 

Dr. Cooper to combine dedicated research time with 

her medical practice.

As director of Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Memory Center, 

Dr. Cooper leads a multidisciplinary 

team that evaluates, educates and 

manages patients with declining 

memory. Her passion for research 

dates back to the early 1990s when 

she participated in clinical drug trials 

to test the first medication developed 

for treatment of Alzheimer’s. “The 

response I witnessed was nothing 

short of miraculous,” says Dr. Cooper. 

“I had an elderly patient who literally 

went from curled up and mute in a 

wheelchair to talking to me. That 

definitely sparked my interest.” 

Phase III clinical studies provide 

the chief evidence for safety and 

effectiveness that the U.S. Food 

and Drug Administration (FDA) 

considers in deciding whether to 

approve a drug. Dr. Cooper’s research 

experience includes participation 

in the Phase III studies that led to 

a currently prescribed Alzheimer’s 

medication, Aricept, being approved 

for market. The push for better, more 

effective treatments is ever present. 

As Dr. Cooper explains, “The two 

types of prescription drugs we have 

now show very modest benefits in 

terms of symptom improvement. The 

biggest benefit is they slow the rate 

of progression. So it’s not that you 

take the pill and you’re better—you 

take the pill and two years from now 

you’re only half as bad as you would 

have been.” A promising new drug 

is now in Phase III clinical trials; 

Dr. Cooper’s research experience and 

the Foundation’s research support are 

what led Gundersen Lutheran to be 

chosen as the only Wisconsin site to 

participate in the study. 

Dimebon and beyond 

Dimebolin hydrochloride (brand 

name Dimebon) is an antihistamine 

drug that has been shown to inhibit 

brain cell death in preclinical studies 

of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers 

believe that impaired mitochondrial 

function may contribute to the loss 

of brain cell function in Alzheimer’s. 

Mitochondria are the central energy 

source of all cells, and Dimebon has 

been shown to improve the function 

of mitochondria in the brain. In a 

one-year, placebo-controlled trial 

of patients with mild-to-moderate 

Alzheimer’s, Dimebon improved both 

cognition and memory. 

Dr. Cooper is understandably 

excited about Dimebon and its 

potential. “The original trials suggest 

not only a more robust symptom 

improvement, but a markedly slower 

rate of decline,” she notes. “So if it 

pans out, Dimebon will do a better 

job than other prescription drugs we 

have available.” Diane Campbell’s 

85-year old mother, Anna, is a patient 

of Dr. Cooper’s who feels fortunate 

to be participating in the Dimebon 

study. “In discussing it with Mom, 

we all felt whatever we can do to help 

slow down the disease puts us ahead 

of the game,” says Diane. After being 

diagnosed with Alzheimer’s last year, 

Anna, a widow who was living alone 

on the family farm in Gays Mills, 

went to stay in Minneapolis with 

her daughter Diane. She continues 

to receive her care at Gundersen 

Lutheran because “honestly, we are 

just so impressed and excited to be 

part of such important neurological 

research and the fact that it’s available 

here!” says Diane. “It’s been a good 

experience for Mom and for me, 

plus we know there are so many 

people who could benefit from the 

results of this study. Perhaps even me 

personally—you just never know what 

the future holds.” 

Dimebon is categorized as an 

“interventional drug” designed to 

slow or stop the progression of the 

disease. Dr. Cooper is pursuing

10 Warning Signs 

of Alzheimer’s 

Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal 

brain disease that affects as many as 

5.3 million Americans. Early warning 

signs include: 

1. Memory loss that affects job skills 

2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks 

such as cooking 

3. Language difficulties 

4. Disorientation to time and place 

5. Personality changes 

6. Poor judgment 

7. Impaired abstract thinking 

(being able to do simple math or 

balance a checkbook) 

8. Misplacing things 

(putting keys in the trash, eyeglasses 

in the refrigerator, not being able to 

find a parked car) 

9. Rapid mood changes 

10. Loss of interest in favorite 

activities like playing cards, 

socializing, cooking, etc. 

When family members notice any of 

these losses, they should arrange for 

a medical evaluation. Early detection 

means more time to benefit from 

available treatments, and more time to 

plan for the future.

Memory Loss: 

Is it normal aging, or a more 

serious problem? 

Memory loss does not necessarily mean a loved one 

has Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia can be associated 

with more than 70 other conditions, including 

Parkinson’s disease, Huntington’s disease, or vascular 

disease. Because dementia can sometimes be 

treated, correct diagnosis is important. At Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Memory Center, a multidisciplinary 

approach is used to evaluate, educate and manage 

patients with declining memory. 

Dr. Cooper’s research experience and the 

Foundation’s research support led Gundersen 

Lutheran to be chosen as the only Wisconsin 

site to participate in the Dimebon study. 

another aspect of Alzheimer’s research that may actually 

help prevent the onset of the disease itself. “What we call 

Alzheimer’s disease starts at least a decade or two before 

you have the symptoms,” says Dr. Cooper. “So the hope 

would be if we can identify risk factors for those things 

that start the whole chain of events, and if we can identify 

them early, we may actually be able to prevent someone 

from developing full blown Alzheimer’s.” She is currently 

investigating abnormalities with vitamin levels in a group 

of patients that exhibit excesses or deficiencies which in 

theory, shouldn’t exist. These two B vitamins are also 

linked to mitochondrial function in all cells, including 

the brain. Dr. Cooper’s current focus is on replicating 

the results of her initial test findings. “The books say our 

results are impossible, and yet that is what we are seeing,” 

says Dr. Cooper. “If the books are wrong, we’ve got to fix 

the books.” Finding out what her discovery could mean 

to Alzheimer’s patients is what drives this self-described 

“heretic” to keep exploring the unknown. 

The Memory Center staff includes a neurologist 

(a specialist in diseases of the nervous system), a 

neuropsychologist (a specialist who determines 

which capabilities are intact or impaired), a social 

worker, a psychometrist (a specialist in testing) and a 

patient care coordinator. “Our goal is to try to put all 

the pieces together in one day,” says director Janelle 

Cooper, MD. The evaluation day is structured as a 

series of appointments involving both the patient 

and family member(s). Approximately one week later, 

the Memory Center staff meets with the patient and 

family to talk about test results, clinical findings and 

recommendations. “Some patients will require longterm 

follow up; some cases are more straightforward 

and are referred back to their primary care provider 

with our recommendations,” explains Dr. Cooper. “We 

keep an eye on our patients no matter what, serving 

as a resource for their ongoing care and treatment.” 

Since at least half of dementia patients have 

probable Alzheimer’s, the Memory Center staff is 

highly experienced at helping families who receive 

this diagnosis. Nearly two-thirds of persons with 

Alzheimer’s disease are cared for at home, making 

it critically important to connect with community 

resources such as advocacy and support groups, 

the Alzheimer’s Association, day care, respite care, 

nursing home special care units and hospice. 

As a physician-researcher, Dr. Cooper is dedicated to 

finding more effective treatments for this debilitating 

disease. Until then, the Memory Center’s supportive 

approach can help make life better for patients and 

easier for families to care for their loved ones. 


Researchers Focus on 

Preparation of Rural Surgeons 

research study published this year in the Journal 

A of Surgical Education has ranked Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation’s general surgery residency 

program as the nation’s most successful in the placement 

of graduating surgeons in rural practice. The study, 

“Are General Surgery Residency Programs Likely to 

Prepare Future Rural Surgeons?”, assessed the degree 

to which current rural training track general surgery 

residency programs in the U.S. produce rural surgeons. 

Our program ranked first in two of the study categories: 

graduating surgeons practicing in rural areas and in small 

rural areas. 

“I feel fortunate to be part of a general surgery residency 

that has a strong record for placing general surgeons 

in rural environments,” says Benjamin Jarman, MD, 

associate program director of the Foundation’s general 

surgery residency. He notes that 24 percent of Gundersen 

Lutheran graduates choose fellowship, whereas 76 percent 

choose practice in a general surgery setting. Of those 

graduates choosing general surgery practice, 66 percent 

have chosen to practice in towns with populations of 

10,000 or less. “In light of many residencies where 

upwards of 90 percent of graduates choose fellowship 

training, this is quite an accomplishment,” says 

Dr. Jarman. 

Accomplishments like these are positioning Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation on the forefront of a major 

issue in the national health care dialogue: The shortage 

of general surgeons in rural areas of the country. The 

situation is expected to become worse over the next 

decade, as more rural surgeons approach retirement age 

and fewer newly graduated surgeons choose to replace 

them in rural practice. 

The research study suggests that one reason new general 

surgeons may decide not to practice rurally is because 

they feel professionally unprepared to serve the diverse 

case mixture that is typical for rural practice. That 

isn’t the case for graduates of the Foundation’s surgery 

program. “Our resident experience during training 

continues to offer a broad range of rotations to ultimately 

prepare them for rural practice,” explains Dr. Jarman. 

“Despite the lack of a national requirement, we provide 

formal rotations for our residents in obstetrics/gynecology, 

urology, burn management, endoscopy, orthopedics and 

neurosurgery to accomplish this goal. We also have a 

designated rural surgery elective which provides exposure 

to the rewards and challenges of rural surgery.” 

It’s clear that with the growing need for a coordinated 

response to rural health workforce shortages, our 

Foundation’s surgery residency program is receiving welldeserved 

recognition as a national leader.

Nursing Research Reaches Out 

to Hmong Community 

When nursing student Lee 

Her Lee applied for the 

2008 Dr. A.C.V. and Mary 

M. Elston Fellowship in Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation’s 

Summer Research Fellowship 

program, her goal was to broaden 

her horizons. “I didn’t know there 

was such a field as nursing research,” 

says Lee. “This fellowship seemed 

like a great opportunity to explore 

another side of nursing. I thought 

an actual project would make it 

easier to understand the process, and 

appreciate it more.” What Lee didn’t 

know at the time of her application 

was the research project selected for 

the fellowship was going to focus on 

her own Hmong culture. 

The research study, “Health 

Needs Assessment of Hmong 

Elders: Mental Health Issues,” 

was developed under the direction 

of Ana Schaper, PhD, RN, the 

Foundation nurse scientist whose 

work with Hmong health issues 

(specifically, the evaluation of 

depression screening assessment 

tools) has won national awards. The 

2008 summer fellowship project 

was part of an ongoing research 

collaboration between Dr. Schaper 

and the La Crosse County Unit on 

Aging to address the unique needs of 

the Hmong community. 

“It turned out to be one of those 

timely events,” recalls Schaper. “We 

had chosen a Hmong research study 

and then a Hmong nursing student 

applied who was the very best 

candidate for the fellowship. It was one 

of those opportunities in life where we 

learned so much from each other.” 

The purpose of the study was to 

assess for depression symptoms in 

Hmong elders (at or over the age of 

60) in La Crosse County. Differences 

in traditional Hmong beliefs and 

Western cultural beliefs create 

significant barriers to effective health 

assessment and treatment of this 

population. Further, conventional 

mental health therapies have not been 

accepted by the Hmong community. 

Because research suggests that 

exercise may be effective in 

managing depressive symptoms, the 

study sought to identify culturally 

appropriate exercise for the Hmong 

and utilize best practices for 

communicating the need for exercise 

as part of daily life.

of the Family Medicine department in the Founder’s Building of Gundersen Lutheran’s La Crosse campus. 

Lee and Schaper credit each 

other with the idea of creating a 

Hmong story cloth, or Pa ndau, to 

help communicate various ways 

of exercising through walking. 

Traditionally, the Pa ndau depict 

journeys or celebrate events that are 

important in Hmong life. Producing 

the “new” exercise-focused Pa ndau 

became a family affair, with Lee 

brainstorming the ideas, her father 

creating the drawings, and her aunts 

completing the needlework. The 

Pa ndau has become the centerpiece 

of an overall communication 

strategy, and may be reproduced in 

brochures, posters, or other material 

designed specifically for the Hmong 

community. 

Walking is a key form of exercise 

depicted in the Pa ndau because it can 

be associated with outcome measures. 

“Some of our previous research 

showed pedometers may be a way 

to inspire walking; it’s something 

Gundersen Lutheran uses in programs 

all the time,” explains Schaper. “In 

our data, as we interpreted it, the 

Hmong indicated many hours of 

activity a day, but how do we quantify 

that as real exercise? Pedometers 

capture that data and help the 

elders understand the activity levels 

needed for wellness.” In addition to 

pedometers, the Hmong participants 

receive tracking cards to record their 

steps and are awarded certificates 

for reaching specific goals as a 

continuation of the project. 

Lee Her Lee’s poster about the 

fellowship research study was 

presented at the 2008 Wisconsin 

Nurses’ Association Annual Meeting 

and Conference, where it was named 

Best Research Poster. The cultural 

nature of the project earned special 

attention, but more importantly, it 

was directly applicable to nursing 

practice. As Dr. Ana Schaper says, 

“I think these were ideas that any 

nurse could leave the conference and 

say ‘this is something I can do.’ At 

the invitation of the Unit on Aging, 

Schaper has gone on to present 

the study and related follow up 

activities at two national conventions 

for public policymakers. There is 

interest at both the state and national 

level in replicating the success of 

this community-based collaboration 

to reach out and better serve the 

Hmong community. 

For Lee, one of the most gratifying 

parts of project was “the opportunity 

to really look at the issues of the 

Hmong elders and Hmong people and 

hear what they think about Western 

health care. Growing up, I had never 

really asked my parents what they 

thought of it. It gave me a chance to 

ask myself that question, too.” Having 

earned her nursing degree in 2009 

from the University of Wisconsin- 

Madison School of Nursing (where 

Gundersen Lutheran serves as 

the Western Campus), Lee is now 

employed by Gundersen Lutheran as 

a registered nurse. The Foundation 

fellowship was instrumental in 

fostering her support for the role of 

research in nursing. “I have a better 

appreciation for research findings 

now, after seeing how long and 

thorough research projects can be,” 

says Lee. “If we want to improve 

health care and deliver better, more 

efficient, more culturally appropriate 

patient care, we will not have the 

evidence to support what we do if we 

don’t invest in research.” 


New Partnership Creates 

Lung Cancer Research 

Endowment 

Lung cancer awareness is on the rise in Wisconsin, thanks to the 

efforts of local survivor Sue Eber and Gundersen Lutheran oncologist 

Kurt Oettel, MD. 

November is national Lung 

Cancer Awareness Month, 

a campaign dedicated to 

bringing much-needed support 

and attention to a disease that 

each year kills more people than 

breast, prostate, colon and pancreas 

cancers combined. There has been a 

groundswell of grassroots support for 

lung cancer awareness at Gundersen 

Lutheran, thanks to the tireless efforts 

of oncologist Kurt Oettel, MD, and 

lung cancer survivor Sue Eber, a 

longtime supporter of Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation. 

For Dr. Oettel, it’s been a threepart 

mission to increase awareness 

of progress in lung cancer among his 

fellow physicians; foster collaboration 

between Gundersen Lutheran and 

University of Wisconsin-Madison in 

lung cancer research projects; and 

improve the efficiency of lung cancer 

care here at home. For Sue Eber, 

an active member of Gundersen 

Lutheran’s lung cancer awareness 

group, it’s become a passionate 

personal cause. “When I was 

diagnosed four years ago, I knew 

nothing about lung cancer,” says 

Sue. “Lung cancer is not who I am; 

however, lung cancer awareness is 

who I’ve become. I’m going to stick 

around as long as I possibly can to 

make a difference.” 

The desire and opportunity to 

make a difference in the detection 

and treatment of lung cancer has 

led to a growing partnership with 

the University of Wisconsin’s 

Paul Carbone Comprehensive 

Cancer Center in Madison. Lung 

cancer support groups from each 

organization regularly hold joint 

meetings by teleconference. 

Dr. Oettel and staff from Gundersen 

Lutheran’s Center for Cancer and 

Blood Disorders have collaborated 

with their Madison counterparts 

to raise awareness about lack of 


funding for lung cancer research 

in Wisconsin and throughout the 

country. Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation has now joined the 

partnership by committing to a joint 

fundraising campaign that will create 

an endowment to support a full-time 

lung cancer research professorship at 

the Wisconsin Institutes for Medical 

Research (WIMR) at the University 

of Wisconsin School of Medicine and 

Public Health in Madison. An entire 

floor of the new facility will house 

researchers dedicated to cancers of 

the lungs, and head and neck. 

“This partnership sends a real 

message that our state is aware of 

the tremendous need for lung cancer 

research and is committed to making 

a difference,” says Robyn Tanke, 

CFRE, senior director of development 

for Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation. “It’s not only the right 

thing to do; it’s the right time. Once 

it is established and fully funded, the 

lung cancer wing at the Wisconsin 

Institutes for Medical Research will 

be among the top tier of lung cancer 

research centers in the country, if not 

the only one.” 

The goal of the campaign 

is to raise $1 million, with 


Foundation committing to raise 

half (i.e., $500,000.) Dollars raised 

by the Foundation will establish 

a permanent lung cancer research 

endowment here, with a gift from 

endowment earnings granted to 

the University on an annual basis 

in support of the professorship. 

“The larger this endowment gets, 

the more dollars we’ll have to work 

with for future lung cancer research 

projects here at Gundersen Lutheran,” 

explains Tanke. “We believe so 

strongly that the great things we 

are going to accomplish in Madison 

will benefit our patients through the 

ongoing collaboration with Dr. Oettel 

and Dr. Simon Shelley, who heads up 

our own cancer research laboratory.” 

Sue Eber is enthusiastic about 

taking on another new role: that of 

champion for the lung cancer research 

endowment campaign. Together with 

her husband Dave, she is also making 

a substantial lead gift. “Believe me, 

we understand that it’s very difficult 

for people to give in the current 

economy, when they are rather unsure 

of what is going to happen next,” says 

Sue. “People aren’t going to give if 

they don’t understand the need. I see 

this role as a continuation of what I’ve 

been doing: raising awareness about 

the severity of the situation with lung 

cancer and the importance of doing 

something.” 

Among all the key players in 

this partnership, there is palpable 

excitement about the opportunity it 

presents and the positive momentum 

being generated. Sue Eber compares 

it to a rolling snowball, getting bigger 

and picking up speed. “There is no 

question in my mind that what comes 

from this research partnership is 

going to be outstanding, and it’s going 

to benefit the world eventually. But 

it is starting here—with Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation being 

so responsive and proactive about 

taking the lead. I am honored to be 

associated with them on this.” 

Why lung cancer research? 

» Lung cancer is the leading cause of death in the United 

States among every ethnic group. It accounts for 1 in every 3 

cancer deaths. 

» Lung cancer kills more people than breast, prostate, colon, 

liver, kidney and melanoma—combined. 

» Lung cancer kills twice as many women than breast cancer. 

» Lung cancer kills three times as many men than prostate 

cancer. 

» Ten to fifteen percent of patients diagnosed with lung 

cancer have never smoked. Sixty percent of patients 

diagnosed with lung cancer are former smokers who quit 

decades ago. 

» Eighty-five percent of lung cancer patients will die within 

five years of diagnosis because of late-stage detection. 

No accurate screening mechanism has been established as 

a standard of practice, such as a mammogram for breast 

cancer or a colonoscopy for colon cancer. Many patients who 

receive early-stage detection were found by “accident”. 

Why now? 

» Only sixteen percent of lung cancer is being 

diagnosed at its earliest and most curable stage. 

» So little progress has been made that lung cancer 

exceeds every other cause of death except heart 

disease in the United States. 

» Lung cancer continues to be the least funded in 

dollars per death of the four major cancers.

Matters: 

A Patient’s 

Perspective 

In the fall of 2008, Pat Smith, general manager of the La Crosse 

Radio Group, was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a cancer of 

plasma cells, part of the immune system. Pat and his wife, Joanie, 

remember their first meeting with Gundersen Lutheran hematologist 

Wayne Bottner, MD, FACP. “It was one of those bad news/good news 

situations,” recalls Pat. “The bad news was that I had cancer. The good 

news is that Dr. Bottner told us about an open research study on one of 

the newest treatments available for multiple myeloma.” 

Support from Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation enables the 

Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders to offer six different clinical 

trials for the treatment of multiple myeloma. Pat Smith became one of 

the 99 individuals currently participating in study S0777 (see sidebar, 

page 13) and began treatment last November. As a longtime friend 

and supporter of the Foundation, Pat graciously agreed to reflect on 

his research experience for Pathfinders. 

When did you learn of your 

diagnosis? 

Last summer I had a pain in my back 

that wouldn’t go away. I finally went 

in to be checked out, and discovered I 

had a compression fracture in one of 

my vertebrae. Prior to the procedure 

to fix my fracture, they did a routine 

biopsy. I didn’t really give it much 

thought. But it came back with some 

abnormal cells and further tests—a 

bone density scan and bone marrow 

biopsy—confirmed it was multiple 

myeloma. 

What happened next? 

I was referred to the Center for 

Cancer and Blood Disorders, and 

my physician turned out to be 

Dr. Bottner, who I knew from serving 

on the community board for the 

Blood Center of Wisconsin. We felt 

comfortable with him right away. 

He assured us that my cancer had 

been caught early (Stage 1) and was 

slow growing. We discussed the 

opportunity to take part in this study 

and what would be involved. It wasn’t 

a snap decision; we reviewed a lot of 

information and decided the benefits 

outweighed the risks. We absolutely 

trusted Dr. Bottner and his team and 

had no reason to feel this wouldn’t be 

the way to go. 


What factors led to your 

decision to enroll in the study? 

The number of adult cancer patients 

enrolled in clinical trials is really low. 

When I learned that less than five 

percent of adults versus more than 

50 percent of children with newly 

diagnosed cancers are enrolled into 

clinical trials in this country, it really 

stuck with me. 

I think the real reason for being in a 

study is it’s going to help you, plus 

maybe you’re going to help other 

people in the long run. I’m kind of a 

research geek so it was interesting to 

go online and see what other people 

are doing to treat this disease. From 

what I could find, this treatment 

seems to be the one that is working 

very well. It’s really cutting-edge 

stuff which makes it kind of exciting, 

if you can call cancer exciting. By 

enrolling, you’re helping researchers 

find the best new treatment that 

will work until they find a cure. 

Obviously, that’s the ultimate result 

we want to see. 

Battling cancer of any kind 

presents challenges. What 

were some of the highs and 

lows you faced along the way? 

During all this, my son Nate was 

activated for service in Iraq. It’s made 

it a little tougher, having him gone. I 

didn’t want my health to be a concern 

of his while he was over there; he has 

enough to deal with. 

I’ve been impressed to experience 

the Cancer Center as a patient, rather 

than a community member. The 

entire team has just been amazing. 

In the East Building pharmacy, 

our pharmacist helps us manage 

prescriptions. At the registration 

desk, they know you by name after 

just a few visits. Lori Meyer is the 

clinical research coordinator, and 

she’s helped us with every question, 

problem and concern. Everything is 

well coordinated, and everyone is 

very caring and concerned about not 

just you, the patient, but your entire 

family. 

Overall, I’ve been able to function 

pretty normally. In fact, I feel 

fortunate in what I have, if you 

have to have it. The prognosis with 

this cancer was not good just a few 

years ago. They don’t have a cure for 

multiple myeloma yet, but the goal 

with the drug I’m testing is to make it 

comparable to diabetes—where you’ll 

be taking drugs for the rest of your 

life, and there are going to be side 

effects, but you’re going to be able to 

live with it. 

What is the most important 

lesson or message you find 

yourself sharing with others? 

This entire experience has led me to 

think that part of my mission here is 

to talk with people about asking for 

research opportunities and getting 

enrolled in studies. My thinking was 

basically this: If I’m going to benefit 

from this study—which I certainly 

am—I can help people in two 

ways. First, by helping researchers 

determine whether this treatment 

will be successful; and second, by 

raising awareness. More people 

should be asking their physicians 

if there is a research study they can 

enroll in. People need to know that 

there is hope through experimental 

treatments, and we’re fortunate the 

Foundation supports making them 

available at Gundersen Lutheran. 

Why is this study 

being done? 

Clinical trials are research studies 

that help researchers determine 

whether new medications, 

treatments, and devices are safe 

and effective. Clinical trials bring 

the same cutting-edge treatments 

available at the nation’s largest 

research hospitals within reach 

of patients in even the most rural 

areas of the country. 

SWOG S0777 is a study of 

“Lenalidomide and Dexamethasone 

With or Without Bortezomib in 

Treating Patients With Previously 

Untreated Multiple Myeloma.” 

Biological therapies, such as 

lenalidomide, may stimulate the 

immune system in different ways 

and stop cancer cells from growing. 

Drugs used in chemotherapy, such 

as dexamethasone, work in different 

ways to stop the growth of cancer 

cells, either by killing the cells or 

by stopping them from dividing. 

Bortezomib may stop the growth 

of cancer cells by blocking some of 

the enzymes needed for cell growth 

or by blocking blood flow to the 

cancer. This randomized Phase III 

trial is studying giving lenalidomide 

and dexamethasone together with 

bortezomib to see how well it works 

compared to dexamethasone and 

lenalidomide alone in treating 

patients with previously untreated 

multiple myeloma.

In August, Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation lost a dear 

friend with the passing of Bill 

Barney. Pathfinders readers may 

recall my column about Bill and Ann 

Barney’s enthusiasm for charitable 

giving from our Spring 2008 issue. 

In one of my last conversations 

with Bill, I shared how much I 

valued him as a person we could 

always count on. Part of this was 

due to his long relationship with 

our organizations and his unique 

role in their respective history. Bill 

served 20+ years as a member of the 

Foundation Board of Directors and 

the Hospital Board; he was twice 

president of the Foundation and 

once of the hospital. His leadership, 

foresight and wise counsel all came 

into play during the merger days, 

which he saw as a necessary step to 

future success. 

Bill was an unwavering advocate 

and champion. If the Foundation had 

an exceptional need, the Barneys 

were among a handful of people to 

whom you could present the situation. 

In all my experience, there was never 

a time when Bill said he was too busy 

to listen. Moreover, I can’t think of a 

time he wouldn’t help. 

Bill and Ann were partners in each 

of our pathways in philanthropy. They 

are members of the Heritage Society 

by virtue of their annual giving, 

Legacy Society members through 

their far-sighted use of planned giving 

options, and their cumulative giving 

history has earned them recognition 

as members of our Founders Society. 

They’ve been involved in every 

capital campaign, every building 

program, and made some very special 

contributions along the way. When 

the medical education library had to 

be moved, it was Bill and Ann who 

provided the funding. A waiting room 

in the Cancer Center is named for 

Bill and Ann, as is the state-of-the-art 

board room located in our Foundation 

offices. 

In yet another act of friendship, 

Bill Barney asked that his memorial 

gifts be directed to our Foundation’s 

new endowment fund for lung cancer 

research. How characteristically 

generous of Bill, to see a special need 

and want to help. He will be deeply 

missed. 

In Anticipation of 

Transformation

In this issue of Pathfinders, we 

are announcing an exciting 

new endeavor in the area of 

lung cancer research (see page 10). 

For me it is particularly exciting to 

be involved in the development of 


this partnership and seeing all the 

pieces fall into place: the right issue, 

the right people, at the right time 

for the right reason. This is one of 

those extraordinary times when you 

actually feel yourself on the verge of 

a transformative event, one that will 

resonate for Gundersen Lutheran, the 

state of Wisconsin, and beyond. 

It begins with patterns of activity 

that align around a certain project, 

and the right combination of people 

becoming attached to it as well. In 

the case of lung cancer research, it 

takes the commitment of Dr. Kurt 

Oettel, who wants to improve the 

standard of care for patients with 

lung cancer. It takes the commitment 

of Dr. Simon Shelley, who only a 

year ago joined Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation to begin work at 

our new cancer research laboratory. It 

takes a courageous survivor like Sue 

Eber to commit herself to this project 

because she so truly believes in it. It 

takes our Foundation’s willingness to 

partner with another entity and share 

our donors’ money because it’s the 

right thing to do. 

How do I know great things 

will come from these passionate 

commitments to a cause? Because 

I have witnessed it before, most 

recently in the area of breast cancer 

research. From the founding of the 

Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast 

Care, to the creation of the Norman 

L. Gillette, Jr. Cancer Research 

Fellowship endowment and the 

community’s embrace of Steppin’ Out 

in Pink…an unbelievable record of 

success has evolved from the dreams 

of the right people, united by a vision. 

In the span of a few years, Gundersen 

Lutheran has become the nation’s 

leader in accreditation, treatments 

and outcomes for breast cancer. 

What we’re doing now in the 

area of lung cancer research has the 

potential to be that successful, and 

that transformative. It is our hope that 

the research work resulting from this 

partnership will achieve distinction as 

one of the leading lung cancer centers 

of its kind in the country. Think what 

a difference we will make!

The Centers for Disease 

Control and Prevention 

estimates between 1.4 and 

3.6 million sports and recreationrelated 

concussions occur each year, 

with the majority happening at the 

high school level. 

The medical community sees 

sports-related brain trauma as a 

growing health crisis due to an 

explosion of scientific research 

that shows mismanagement of even 

seemingly mild concussions can 

lead to serious consequences in 

young athletes. Symptoms of “postconcussion 

syndrome” may include 

chronic headaches, fatigue, sleep 

difficulties, and deficits in short-term 

memory, problem solving and general 

academic functioning. In some cases, 

these symptoms can be permanent 

and disabling. 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Sports 

Medicine department has been 

focusing an intense effort on 

improving concussion care in 

athletes. Collaborative work with 

emergency and neurosciences staff, 

area athletic directors and regional 

sports care professionals has resulted 

in improved communication, new 

evaluation and treatment protocols, 

and a plan for implementing baseline 

neurocognitive testing of studentathletes 

at local high schools. 

Grant support from Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation 

enabled the training of key 

Gundersen Lutheran staff in a 

nationally recognized program for the 

evaluation of brain-injured athletes. 

Known as ImPACT, the computerbased 

testing program is designed 

to aid evaluators in assessing the 

severity of a concussion, help 

determine a safer timetable for return 

to sport and decrease the risk of 

potentially catastrophic re-injury. 

Baseline testing was performed 

this fall at Central, Logan, Tomah, 

Onalaska, Holmen, Luther, Gale- 

Ettrick-Trempealeau, Arcadia and 

West Salem High Schools, and 

Viterbo University. Now when an 

athlete gets concussed (and each 

school averages one concussion per 

month), they receive a post-injury 

test as part of their evaluation. In 

this way, decisions about return 

to play are based on objective 

neurocognitive findings rather 

than an injured athlete’s subjective 

reporting of symptoms. As ImPACT 

proponent and Gundersen Lutheran 

athletic trainer Sheldon Wagner 

says: It is a great tool to have in 

the toolbox. The implementation 

of ImPACT testing has served as 

a great springboard to improving 

community awareness of concussion 

and enhancing care throughout our 

region.

“I’ll be forever grateful that Tim was the Emergency Medical 

Technician on duty in the Emergency Room the night that my 

husband Guy came in with chest pain. 

Within one minute of arriving at TEC, Tim and the Emergency 

Room team helped Guy into a gown, inserted an IV, placed 

a blood pressure cuff on his arm and started the EKG. Less 

than 5 minutes after his arrival, I saw the heart rate monitor 

go from 64 beats per minute to a question mark, which 

meant he was in big trouble. Within 10 seconds there were 

8 or 9 emergency personnel working quickly and calmly to 

address his ventricular fibrillation. My 54-year-old healthy 

husband was having a full-blown heart attack. 

That is when Tim became the central focus in my life. He 

pushed on Guy’s chest with all of his strength to keep the 

blood flowing while others set up the electrical shock 

equipment, provided oxygen. About a minute went by and 

Tim continued pushing on his chest with a passion that was 

palpable. He wanted Guy to Live. There were many other 

heroes on the team that night, too. A second minute went 

by and I heard the familiar phrase, “I’m clear, you’re clear, 

we’re all clear” as the team tried to shock his heart into 

beating again. 

Finally, after about one more agonizing minute of CPR, I 

heard Tim say, “There he is!” 

We have both relived those amazing three minutes 

many times. We owe Guy’s life to Tim and the rest of the 

emergency room staff. The team worked together efficiently 

and effectively to bring Guy back to us, and for that we will 

be forever grateful.”

Research Labs Open 

Doors at Open House 

On the afternoon of Friday, August 

28, about 140 people attended a 

Foundation-sponsored open house 

at the Health Science Center 

to meet our talented research 

scientists and tour their lab 

facilities. It was an exceptional 

opportunity for learning more 

about the growing basic science 

research supported by Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation, 

under the direction of Dr. Steve 

Callister (Micobiology Research) 

and Dr. Carl Simon Shelley (Cancer 

Research.) “Most of our guests 

didn't know we are doing this type 

of research in La Crosse and were 

visibly impressed,” says Robyn 

Tanke, CFRE, senior director of 

development for the Foundation. 

The event was open to the public.

Foundation Launches 

Nursing Scholarship 

Program 

In 2009, Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation began awarding four 

separate nursing scholarships under 

the “Legacy of Nursing Scholarship” 

Program. In the spring, Janine Engen, 

RN, became the first annual recipient 

of the $1,000 Dianna P. Myhre Nurse 

Practitioner Scholarship. This 

scholarship fund was established 

in honor of Dianna Myhre, NP, to 

recognize a registered nurse who 

exemplifies excellence in nursing and 

compassionate care of the elderly. 

This fall, three additional nursing 

scholarships will be awarded for 

the first time, with subsequent 

awards occurring in May of each year 

hereafter. They are: 

The Julie MacDonald 

Nursing Scholarship 

Two $500 scholarships will be 

awarded annually to nurses with 

associate degrees who are pursuing 

bachelor degrees in nursing. 

The Alice Wehrenberg Scholarship 

After supporting a variety of 

continuing education programs 

for hospital nurses over the years, 

this fund will now provide a $500 

scholarship to be awarded annually 

to a hospital nurse for continuing 

education needs. 

The Heritage Nursing Scholarship 

Created to celebrate nursing 

accomplishments and encourage 

advanced nursing practice, this 

$1,000 scholarship will be awarded 

annually to a nurse pursuing a 

Master’s in Nursing: Clinical Nurse 

Leader, Clinical Nurse Specialist, 

Nursing Education. 

New Fellowship Program 

Receives Approval 

The Accreditation Council for 

Graduate Medical Education recently 

approved Gundersen Lutheran's 

application for accreditation of a 

new Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation-sponsored fellowship 

program in hematology-oncology. 

“This is a significant milestone for 

our postgraduate medical education 

programs at Gundersen Lutheran,” 

says David H. Chestnut, MD, director 

of medical education for Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation. 

Chestnut adds, “This program will 

not only strengthen our existing 

medical education and research 

programs, but also it will increase the 

visibility of our clinical programs in 

hematology-oncology, and enhance 

the quality of care for the patients we 

are privileged to serve.” 

The hematology-oncology fellowship 

program is a three-year subspecialty 

training program for physicians who 

have completed an internal medicine 

residency program. The application 

was submitted by program director 

Alcee Jumonville, MD, and associate 

program director Ronald Go, MD, 

with the assistance of medical 

education manager Jennifer Lee. 

William Agger, MD, director of 

research for Gundersen Lutheran 

Medical Foundation, and Steven 

Pearson, MD, program director for 

the Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation-sponsored Internal 

Medicine Residency Program, also 

provided invaluable support and 

assistance with the application. 


Another Milestone Steppin’ Out in Pink 

Microbiology Research 

Yields New Lyme Vaccine 

More than six years of collaborative 

research between scientists at 

Gundersen Lutheran’s Microbiology 

Research Lab and Intervet/Schering- 

Plough Animal Health has resulted 

in the release of a new Lyme vaccine 

for dogs. The Microbiology Research 

Lab, which receives funding from 


Foundation, worked in partnership 

with Schering-Plough to receive 

USDA licensure and approval of 

Nobivac Lyme. 

The new product offers significantly 

increased protection against the 

illness, surpassing a product that has 

been on the market for more than ten 

years. It is the second canine Lyme 

disease vaccine co-developed by the 

research team led by Steve Callister, 

PhD. “With the Foundation's support, 

further investigations will lead to 

even better methods of diagnosis, 

therapy and prevention of this 

infection for both humans and our 

domestic animals," notes William 

Agger, MD, director of research 

for Gundersen Lutheran Medical 

Foundation. 

Founded in 1988, the Microbiology 

Research Lab has conducted several 

Lyme disease projects and other 

basic research that has resulted in 

more than 100 scientific publications, 

plus several patents and successful 

commercial applications. 

Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation sincerely appreciates the 

thousands of walkers and hundreds of volunteers, entertainers, vendors, 

prize contributors and sponsors who demonstrate their support for local 

breast cancer research by making Steppin’ Out in Pink a success for our 

entire community. 

This year’s event, held on Saturday, September 12, saw a record-breaking 

4,000 walkers of all ages participating to raise an estimated $290,000 

in support of breast cancer research at the Norma J. Vinger Center for 

Breast Care. Proceeds from Steppin’ Out in Pink are designated for 

the Foundation’s Norman L. Gillette, Jr. Cancer Research Fellowship 

endowment. 

Two new event highlights included a survivor 

tent and a bone marrow registry drive. The 

2009 Paula J. Tower Memorial Award was 

presented to Jeanne Boland, of Seneca, WI, 

a 30-year breast cancer survivor whose faith 

and service make her an inspiration to friends, 

family, and community. 

The 5th annual Steppin’ Out in Pink walk will 

take place on Saturday, September 11, 2010. 

Together, we are walking to create a future that 

eliminates breast cancer.

Children With Autism 

PEACE program helps parents cope 

with diagnosis 

The PEACE (Providing Effective Autistic Spectrum Disorder 

Care and Education) for Parents program at Gundersen 

Lutheran offers education to parents and caregivers about the 

diagnosis of autism and helps them understand their child’s 

special needs and behavior. The innovative program consists 

of 24 meetings per family over 12 weeks, covering many 

aspects of the present understanding of autism—particularly 

what to expect and how to cope at home. 

Four families participated in a pilot program in 2008. At 

the time, insurance companies did not cover the cost of such 

educational programs, so the PEACE pilot was underwritten 

by Gundersen Lutheran Health Systems. Feedback was 

extremely positive, prompting planning for another series 

in the fall of 2009 for six families, with funding provided 

by Children’s Miracle Network ® , a service of Gundersen 

Lutheran Medical Foundation. The long-term goal is to 

demonstrate the measurable results of early intervention and 

affect changes to insurance coverage so these services would 

be reimbursed in the future.
