The Values
tewardship
We Hold

What Does Stewardship Mean to
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation?
Respect for the wishes and intentions of our benefactors. Responsibility for the
intelligent management of their charitable gifts. Achieving, recognizing, and
communicating results with clarity and transparency. Steadfast attention to
the personal relationships that are at the heart of everything we do.
These values and priorities, just like the Foundation’s overall mission, are not
changed or affected by the present economic downturn. More than ever, we
are seeing how philanthropy is a way for communities to pull together, and for
people to discover unexpected strength by showing kindness and generosity to
others who need help.
In this issue of Pathfinders, we focus on the community outreach role of
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation by highlighting a few of the many
funds that help fuel a vital charitable engine in the regions we serve. It is
a role that becomes even more critical in times like these, when a faltering
economy affects peace of mind as much as incomes. We must never lose sight
of the fact that now, more than ever, good stewardship is a powerful force for
making positive change in the lives of others.
Pathfinders is published by Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation for friends
and supporters of the Foundation. We
welcome comments or suggestions from
our readers for future stories.
Community
On Stewardship,
Gratitude and
Human Kindness »
Pictured at right: Dr. Mark Connelly visits Foundation
benefactors Ann and Bill Barney.
As families, businesses and
charitable organizations
brace themselves for the next
wave of economic challenges
in 2009, philanthropy is taking
on a whole new dimension in
the communities served by
Gundersen Lutheran. Giving is
becoming more personal than
ever before, with many people
choosing to invest their resources
close to home where results are
most needed, and most visible.
In this issue of Pathfinders,
Mark V. Connelly, MD, Chairman
of Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation, reflects on the
current economy and how it
is inspiring a greater sense of
purpose and thoughtful decisionmaking
at every level.
Many charitable organizations are
feeling vulnerable in this faltering
economy. How is Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation positioning itself
for the year ahead?
We are grateful that 2008 turned
out to be a wonderful year for us,
in that we met or exceeded our
fundraising goals in almost all areas.
I think that speaks to the commitment
and confidence of our donors, the
dedication of our development team
and the stewardship we maintain.
More than anything, it speaks to
the wonderful care provided by our
physicians, nurses and supportive staff.
Because that is what it is all about:
If you take care of people well, then
they and their families are going to be
grateful and supportive. It always boils
down to good patient care.
How do you respond to concerns that
charitable giving may be seen as
optional when business and household
budgets are tight?
Well, we don’t actually know what
is going to happen in 2009. People
in this area have been phenomenal
over the years in supporting us and
honoring that commitment. Our
donors understand how much our
Foundation relies on them—for us
there is no financial safety net from
a parent organization or sponsoring
partner. We have become an
amazing medical center because of
generous, kind-hearted benefactors,
and because of the dedicated
professionals who provide the best in
patient care. While we are cautious
with our expectations for the coming
year, we have every reason to hope
for the best.
Why does prudent stewardship
become even more important is this
challenging economic climate?
None of us has the ability to go to
the Treasury and print more money.
When times are tight, each charitable
dollar is more precious than ever and
we have an obligation to our donors
to manage their gifts intelligently,
just as we always have. We expect
donors will continue to be very
careful in their giving, and perhaps
more strategic by designating their
gifts for specific purposes. Under the
Thompson and Dr. Jeff Thompson, CEO of Gundersen Lutheran.
current circumstances, it’s important
to be able to offer more choices for
specific gifts in areas where there is
need. For instance, we have plans for
hospital expansion and renovation.
There may be someone who wants
to give us a very nice donation, but
their priority is not building rooms.
They’d rather support a program for
the care of children. You need to
have a program umbrella big enough
to allow that to occur.
From your leadership perspective,
what are the biggest challenges of
guiding the Foundation through such
uncertain times?
We’ve been blessed these last ten
years. We’ve never had to make cuts.
But like everyone else, we have to
look at tightening our belt. Everybody
knows that times are tight, and we
may not be able to do some things.
Our Foundation has three
priorities: medical education, then
research, then community outreach
and involvement. Since I’ve been
here—going back over 30 years
now—medical education has always
been the top priority. It’s absolutely
necessary if you want to be a firstclass
organization that’s able to attract
top notch nurses and doctors to a
small community.
Research is also flourishing;
the Foundation has strategically
increased our staff of research
scientists and our facilities. These
are big steps for our organization,
and something our community has
come to expect. As far as community
outreach, the support from our
donors has made us a treasure for the
communities and regions we serve.
Hopefully, we won’t have to make
cuts in any of those areas. But time
will tell. The current circumstances
really require us to be farsighted and
focus on those same values that have
served Gundersen Lutheran so well
for over a century.
Is it an advantage to be able to talk to
donors about the Foundation’s clear
mission-driven strategy?
Absolutely. As they are facing
tough financial decisions, it absolutely
helps to be able to reassure
our donors that we will continue
to train the doctors, the nurses and
other medical professionals for the
next generation. We will expand the
number of doctors and nurses we
train in an effort to meet the needs of
our region and our country. We will
share our expertise with our students
and we will prepare them to practice
not only at other medical centers
but in the small towns of the Upper
Midwest. After all, it has been this
way at Gundersen Lutheran for years.
Even in times of uncertainty,
we know our communities have an
astonishing capacity to lend a hand
and come together in support of the
causes they care about. With their
generous help, we’ll weather this
storm together.
Foundation Funds at Work
A Brief Introduction to Restricted Funds
Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation donors are able to make
gifts in support of a wide variety
of charitable purposes. Donations
for restricted (specific) purposes
are kept in separate funds based
on the donor’s designated wishes.
In a changing world, restricted
funds provide a stream of income to
safeguard the programs and services
that matter most to our donors.
The Foundation has more than 100
restricted funds; the fund sampler
and feature articles in this issue of
Pathfinders highlight just a few.
We are not immune from Wall
Street’s woes. The downturn in
financial markets has caused
great challenges for foundations
across the country, and Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation will
face funding challenges as well.
The lack of earnings from our
endowments will severely limit
what we will be able to support from
these traditional sources. This year,
philanthropy will play a vital role in
sustaining our mission of medical
education, research and community
health outreach. Donors seeking
philanthropic opportunities that
fundamentally change individual lives
and impact society as a whole can
be assured that Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation does both.
A Sampler of Funds and Purposes
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Program Fund
Many researchers believe this new concept—a pacemaker for the brain—
may well mark the beginning of a revolution in psychiatric and neurological
treatment. Established in 2007, funds are used primarily in support of
educational and research initiatives of the Gundersen Lutheran Deep Brain
Stimulation (DBS) Program.
The Green Fund
Provides an avenue for people concerned about the environment to
contribute to Gundersen Lutheran initiatives and programs that create energy
efficiencies, reduce solid waste, promote recycling and promote the use and
conservation of natural resources.
Global Health Initiatives Fund
Life and health are the most basic human rights, yet disparities between
and within countries continue to grow and threaten both political security
and global stability. This special fund supports our employees’ voluntary
efforts to make a difference worldwide through the purchase of medications,
medical supplies and equipment.
Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute Fund
For more than 40 years, Gundersen Lutheran Heart Institute has provided
exceptional heart care for patients of all ages. Contributors know that
hospitals are not all the same when it comes to heart care; their gifts help
Gundersen Lutheran earn national recognition for superior quality, care and
results.
Hospice Fund
Gifts to this fund have enabled hospice caregivers to re-energize at healing
retreats and learn about end-of-life diseases during educational programs.
The Hospice Fund reaches out to help families as well, through remembrance
dinners, support groups, a quarterly newsletter, and other resources.
Oncology Fund
Gifts to the Oncology Fund support education, research and cardiac program
needs of the Gundersen Lutheran Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders. Our
patients have access to investigational treatments available at major medical
centers throughout the country. Last year, more than 165 of the most promising
clinical trial protocols were offered here.
St. Clare Health Mission Fund
The St. Clare Health Mission provides free primary medical care for the
poor in our area who do not qualify for government-sponsored health care
plans and who cannot afford private health insurance. The Mission serves
the “working poor” as well as unemployed and homeless people in need of
medical attention.
Thunder Ride for Pediatric Diabetes Fund
Eight year old Lydia Stalsberg visits
with pediatric endocrinologist
Dr. Jennifer McVean during a regular
checkup. Lydia was diagnosed with
type 1 diabetes last year, and is
learning to manage the daily care
her disease demands.
Helping
Families with
the Ongoing
Cost of Disease
Management
Although pediatric endocrinologist
Jennifer McVean, MD, has
only been practicing at Gundersen
Lutheran since the fall of 2008,
she is already very grateful for the
pediatric diabetes grant monies
made available to patients through
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.
“Diabetes is expensive,” says
Dr. McVean. “To be able to offer
families some assistance is extremely
helpful.”
The Foundation’s Thunder Ride
for Pediatric Diabetes Fund was
activated last spring to help families
cope with the costs associated with
treatment of childhood diabetes.
According to Dr. McVean, type 1
diabetes (an autoimmune disease
affecting production of insulin by
the pancreas) occurs in up to 1 in
300 children, making it the second
most common chronic disease of
childhood after asthma. She currently
treats about 120 pediatric patients
with diabetes, the vast majority of
who have the type 1 variety. Type
2 diabetes (where the pancreas still
produces insulin, but the body is
unable to use it effectively) used to
develop exclusively in adults, but is
now appearing much earlier—as early
as adolescence—due to the childhood
obesity epidemic.
Children with type 1 diabetes are
insulin-dependent, requiring either
6 www.gundluth.org/foundation

multiple (four to six) daily injections or continuous insulin infusion
under the skin via an insulin pump. The insulin pump offers
the advantage of being the closest means of replicating the action
of a healthy pancreas, but it is also a costly treatment option.
This is where the Foundation’s Thunder Ride fund has made
such a difference to families in the Tri-state Region.
The upfront cost of an insulin pump can be anywhere
from $6,000 to $8,000, with most insurances covering only
80 percent. The ongoing cost of treatment is also substantial.
Consider the impact of these regular expenses on a typical
family budget:
» test strips (normally 4-6 per day) for monitoring
blood sugar levels;
» insulin (1-4 vials per month, depending on age);
» insulin pump supplies, syringes and lancets;
» transportation and lost work costs for parents to bring their
children for a doctor’s visit every three months.
This is what a family can anticipate if everything is going
well. More frequent doctor visits, or hospitalizations, can also
occur with diabetic patients. As Dr. McVean notes, “The costs
of caring for a child with diabetes are very real. It’s a lot of
money, and it is never going to go away. It’s a scary thing for
people who are coming in, who have lost their jobs, and don’t
know how they are going to afford the care their child needs.”
Mary Eggen, CSW, MEd, is the social worker to whom
Dr. McVean refers her patients for financial assistance. Eggen has
coordinated Thunder Ride grants to cover the cost of co-payments
on insulin pumps, for diabetic supplies not covered by insurance,
and also transportation costs since many patients must travel
from several hours away to receive their care. As Eggen observes,
“We’re very independent people in the Midwest, so it’s hard for
people to ask for help. They don’t even think about it. Being able
to offer parents something like this is the best part of my job.
They are so touched, they get tears in their eyes.”
Given the current economy, it’s not surprising that grant
requests are on the upswing. In January of 2008, Mary Eggen
made 10 grants; that number doubled to 20 grants made in January
2009 alone. “It makes me nervous,” admits Dr. McVean. “Having
this funding is crucial. This economy has affected everybody, so
will we be able to raise as much money as we have in the past? I
hope so!”
Major support for this fund comes from Thunder Ride, a
100-mile motorcycle road rally whose organizers, John Haverty
and La Crosse Area Harley-Davidson, raised $37,900 for
the Foundation in the past year. To learn more about future
fundraising events or to make a gift, call (608) 775-6600, use the
enclosed gift envelope, or visit www.gundluth.org/foundation.
Do YOU Know?
According to the Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation International, approximately
30,000 Americans are diagnosed with type 1
diabetes each year; over 15,000 are children.
That’s 35 children each and every day,
approximately one child per hour.
Education about the symptoms of type 1
diabetes is critical because type 1 can easily
be mistaken for more common illnesses, such
as the flu. Knowing the warning signs for
type 1 diabetes could save a life. Call your
doctor immediately if you or someone you love
exhibits one or more of these symptoms, which
may occur suddenly.
» Extreme thirst
» Frequent urination
» Sudden vision changes
» Sugar in urine
» Fruity, sweet, or wine-like odor on breath
» Increased appetite
» Sudden weight loss
» Drowsiness, lethargy
» Heavy, labored breathing
» Stupor, unconsciousness
Life with type 1 diabetes poses challenges
for every member of the family. It is a difficult
disease to manage and it can take time to
adapt to the day-to-day demands. However,
treatment products and technologies are
getting better all the time. The key to good
diabetes control is a careful balance between
food, exercise, and insulin. To learn more,
Paula’s Purse Fund
Helping
Cancer
Patients
When They
Need it Most
Scott Sullivan is fighting for his life and
his future after cancer. He and his family
are grateful for the assistance provided
by Paula’s Purse, which they call “a
testimony to all that is right and good
with this world and our community.”
Scott Sullivan received his cancer
diagnosis on September 11, 2008.
Just one week later, he began aggressive
chemotherapy treatments for
his Stage IV Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
A college student working toward a
degree in human resource management,
Sullivan withdrew from school
for the fall semester to focus on his
grueling treatment regimen. “Being
a student with no job, no income,
was going to make it hard to afford
getting back and forth to my medical
appointments,” says Sullivan, 33, of
La Crosse. “Without the funding I
received from Paula’s Purse, I probably
would have had to walk to
chemotherapy, instead of driving.”
Providing financial assistance to
patients battling all types of cancer
is the reason the Paula’s Purse cancer
care fund was created. A collaboration
between Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation, the Center for
Cancer & Blood Disorders, and the
Norma J. Vinger Center for Breast
Care, the fund is specifically targeted
to help patients who are struggling
to pay for basic necessities like
groceries, utilities, transportation and
housing. Eliminating even one source
of worry can make an enormous
difference to patients and families
who are going through treatment
for cancer. In 2008, Paula’s Purse
8 www.gundluth.org/foundation

provided $15,000 in funding for those
who needed it most when their lives
were upended by cancer.
The fund was created as a tribute
to Paula Tower, a Gundersen
Lutheran mammography technologist
who lost her own battle with cancer in
2007, at the age of 39. “Her courage
and attitude were just amazing,”
recalls Paula’s friend Kathy Wieser,
who was among the first donors to
contribute to the Paula’s Purse fund.
“We thought this was a touching way
to pay tribute to her, by keeping funds
here locally to help people who could
use the extra help at a really difficult
time in their life.” The Wieser
family (Kathy and husband Brian,
Brian’s brother Jeff and wife Andrea)
supported this cause even further
through their business sponsorship
of “Pennies from Heaven: Seasons
of Love,” a major fundraiser (see
sidebar) held in February to benefit
Paula’s Purse.
The example set by one courageous
life continues to touch each cancer
patient who benefits from Paula’s
legacy. As Scott Sullivan resumed
his college studies in January, and
prepared for his final chemotherapy
treatment in late February, he
reflected on this “amazing fund” and
how he could possibly say thank you
to all the people who support it, and
Paula herself. “When I’m done with
my schooling I’ll try to help out every
year to raise money for Paula’s Purse
to make help possible for other people
who are neediest, as I was,” says
Sullivan.
Purse cancer patient fund or to
“Pennies from Heaven” Returns to
Benefit Paula’s Purse
On the weekend of February 7–8, musical theater lovers were treated
to an outstanding event in support of an outstanding cause. “Pennies
from Heaven: Seasons of Love,” a Broadway-style musical revue
featuring love songs and show tunes, was staged at the Heider Center
in West Salem. The two performances raised over $20,700 to benefit the
Paula’s Purse fund at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation.
Wieser Brothers General Contractor, Inc. served as a major sponsor
of the event. Kathy Wieser explains that “this was something that hit
home for us and we all—me, Brian, Jeff and Andrea—wanted to be part
of it. We like to support things where we can see results right in our back
yard.” With the economy in such a state of flux, more and more patients
throughout the Tri-state Region are likely to be feeling the pressure of
extra expenses that can emerge during cancer treatment. “I just think
Paula (Tower, for whom the fund is named) would have really liked this
whole idea,” says Kathy Wieser.
“She was always so involved—with
her children, with school and
church, with her community and
her work. She always gave 100
percent. It’s an honor to be part
of something that continues her
positive outlook on life and makes
a difference in the lives
of cancer patients.”
Carilee Fund
Bridging a
Gap for
Victims of
Domestic
Violence
This special fund to provide
financial assistance to victims
of domestic violence has made a
big impact since becoming active
in 2006. Last year alone, funding
requests were received from a
broad geographic area that included
Crawford County, Houston County,
Trempealeau County, Vernon County,
and both the New Horizons and
Safe Pass programs in La Crosse
County. “Everybody’s resources are
dwindling,” observes Maureen Funk,
BS, CSW, coordinator of Gundersen
Lutheran’s Domestic Abuse/Sexual
Assault Program. “Budgets are being
cut, and there really isn’t anything
like this available anywhere else.”
Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation’s Carilee Fund is unique
in that it is designed to help eliminate
financial obstacles to safety by
covering expenses not funded through
other sources. Grants in 2008 paid for
such things as car repairs, rent and
security deposits, child care, heating
bills, and attorney fees. Applicants
must be working with a domestic
violence program in order to qualify
for Carilee funding, but it does not
matter where they receive their
medical care. “We collaborate closely
with programs within our service
area, so we know the screening and
10 www.gundluth.org/foundation

assessment has already occurred in
their work with the client,” explains
Funk. “It makes our application
process easy and straightforward.”
Nearly $15,000 was dispersed
in 2008, and Funk reports that for
the most part, “all of the people
who were assisted have been highly
successful as far as moving on, taking
care of themselves, and getting past
that really hard glitch where they
needed help at that moment in their
life.” To be able to offer this type of
unexpected assistance to someone
weighed down with worries is
“amazing,” says Funk. “It really is a
stepping stone to self-sufficiency for
somebody to be safe and have their
children be safe.”
Domestic violence is a pervasive
and costly problem that impacts
thousands of women, men and
children in our service region each
year. Your gift to Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation’s Carilee Fund
can help change lives, and is as easy
as using the enclosed gift envelope
or visiting www.gundluth.org/
foundation.
The La Crosse County
Domestic Abuse Task
Force honored Gundersen
Lutheran employee
Kim Salwolke in 2008 for
her work in remembrance
of her mother Carilee, for
whom this fund is named.
“I am forever grateful.”
“Close your eyes and imagine: Being stranded on the side of a highway, no cars
around, with no help, being strangled to the point of unconsciousness. You beg for
your life because you are all your child has. You struggle, you taste blood, you see
blood…you continue to receive blow after blow to your face. All you can think is,
‘I have to stay alive.’ And you do.
“The Carilee Fund helped me through one of the most traumatic and life
altering experiences of my life. After my brutal physical assault, I lost my
job, and was on the verge of losing my apartment because of not being able to
cover the remaining cost of rent for the upcoming month. The Carilee Fund
helped me heal emotionally and physically by providing financial assistance to
allow me that extra time in my home. I had time to let the wounds and
bruises heal, I was able to go to sleep in my own bed at night and I felt safe
knowing that I had this extra time to be able to take care of myself, which
in turn allowed me to care for my daughter.
“I can say to every victim and survivor that because of the help and
assistance I received from the Carilee Fund and my advocate I was able
to take that step forward. I got a new job, I was able to relocate and my
daughter and I started our new life.
“This trauma will be with me forever. However, so will the
knowledge that there were people out there who contributed to this
fund, who helped me. So all the individuals who make the Carilee
Fund possible, they are my angels, my strength. They believed and
helped me when I felt no one or nothing could. For that I am forever
grateful.”
Children’s Miracle Network®
Consultations and testing are among the beneficial services
offered by pediatric education specialist Debbie Olufs, PhD,
director of Gundersen Lutheran’s Comprehensive Child Care
Center, pictured here with patient Taylor Edwards.
Helping
Parents Find
Answers to
Childhood
Learning
Problems
For a parent whose child has
learning, behavioral or social
issues, referral to Gundersen
Lutheran’s Comprehensive Child
Care Center (CCCC) can be a
crucial step in turning questions
and concerns into answers. Here, a
multidisciplinary team of experts
is available to provide a diagnostic
evaluation of conditions that interfere
with a child’s ability to succeed
in school, and in everyday life.
From that evaluation, treatment
recommendations can be developed
to assist the child’s parents and
primary care physician in developing
an appropriate plan of care for the
child. The outcomes can be nothing
short of life-changing (see sidebar).
What makes this team approach
so unique? “The reason we’re as
respected as we are is because of
every specialist on the team,” says
CCCC director Debbie Olufs, PhD.
“Whether it’s a pediatrician, a behavioral
health specialist, a speech and
language pathologist, a neurologist,
or others who may be included on
a specific child’s diagnostic team,
each of these clinicians is looking at
the child from his or her own school
of thought. Then we meet privately
to review the findings,” explains
12 www.gundluth.org/foundation

Dr. Olufs. “Getting a comprehensive, well-rounded view
of the child in a few days—versus a few months—makes
the CCCC approach different than any place I know of,”
says Dr. Olufs. Parents often share the frustration of their
previous experiences, “how they went in for testing, went
home, got a report, and nobody explained the findings to
them. Or they just met with an education specialist for findings,
and weren’t able to ask the neurologist a question. We
don’t do that to families.”
Instead, parents and anyone else they choose to include—
teachers, social workers, grandparents, tutors—meet with
the child’s diagnostic team face-to-face to discuss the findings,
respond to questions, and develop recommendations
for treatment. These “staffings” are a critical component
of the CCCC approach to serving the best interests of each
child, yet the costs are not always something the family
can afford. That is where Children’s Miracle Network ® has
stepped in to help.
David Amborn, CFRE, Senior Director of Development
for Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, recalls
that Children’s Miracle Network support of the CCCC
program has evolved over the past 20 years, from individual
grants applied for by families to the current “block grant”
approach. “We recognized this was an area of growing
need,” says Amborn. “The entire process became more
efficient by allocating funds to the CCCC and relying
on their professional judgment to put the dollars to work
where they are needed most.” Three $10,000 grants, or
$30,000, were awarded to the CCCC in 2008, which helped
numerous families by paying for staffing fees not covered
by insurances.
The return on this investment is beyond substantial.
Dr. Olufs estimates that a typical child’s life is spent 20
percent in school time, and 80 percent out of the classroom.
“Their disabilities do not stop at school when they walk
out the door,” she explains. “It impacts their entire lives.
So this is where our service really helps, and why we’re so
very different. It’s about analyzing those challenges, and
addressing them. It’s about quality of life.”
Children’s Miracle
Network ® , a service of
Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation, is
dedicated to saving and
improving the lives of
children. Making a gift is as easy as using the enclosed
envelope, or visiting www.gundluth.org/foundation.
Changing
Lives Through
Learning
“Generally if we do our
jobs right, we don’t see
these children again,”
says Dr. Olufs. “But we do sometimes hear
back from them.” What follows is an excerpt
from a letter that Dr. Olufs keeps framed in
her office, written by a former patient from
Iron Mountain, Michigan.
“At school I was this little girl that had no self
confidence. I always worked hard but that never
worked. I had a tutor two days a week, but we still
did not know what was going on with me. I studied
every night, but it never helped. I had people at
school that came and tested me, but they could
never figure out what was wrong. I really did not
like to read in front of the class, but now I love
to read in front of the class. Now I have so much
confidence; I know I can do anything.
If I would have not met you I would not know
what I would do. By being at Gundersen Lutheran
you gave me the confidence to get where I am
in life. All of those writing tests really paid off
because now I can write like a seventh grader.
I am not the little girl you helped. I am now 5’5”
and I have braces. In school I mostly get A’s and
B’s. Since I have been to Gundersen Lutheran my
grades have gone up a lot. Since I am the oldest
child in my family I set the goals for grades and
everything else. The grades I set are so high my
brother cannot keep up. I have been on the Honor
Roll in sixth and seventh grade for B or better.
Without your help I would not know where I
would be at. You made a huge difference in my life
and my family’s life…Thank you so much for your
time and your wonderful help.”
The Asset of Experience
Development Update
In January of this year, our
national attention was captured
by an extraordinary news event: the
emergency landing of US Airways
Flight 1549 in New York’s Hudson
River. The survival of all 155 passengers—and
the flight crew—quickly
became known as “the Miracle on the
Hudson.” In the subsequent analysis
of “what went right” as far as the
critical factors that led to triumph
rather than tragedy, the collective
professional experience of the flight
crew was at the top of the list. Their
quick and heroic actions are living
proof that experience counts!
Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation is similarly proud of the
experienced “crew” that is responsible
for our development fundraising
activity. “One of the things we are
really blessed with is the longevity of
our staff,” says Robyn Tanke, CFRE,
Senior Director of Development.
“There is huge turnover in this
industry, and even in these tough
economic times skilled fundraisers
are hard to come by. We are very
fortunate that our organization has
such a strong asset in these long-term
associates.”
The benefit of these long-standing
relationships can be seen in the
Foundation’s signature approach to
stewardship. As executive director
Philip Schumacher, CFRE, explains,
“Over the years we come to know
our benefactors very well. We know
their families, they know us, and
there is an enormous level of trust.
Because we’ve developed such close
personal relationships we see the
responsibility of good stewardship as
a genuine honor. These are people—
colleagues, patients, neighbors and
friends—who have entrusted us with
their philanthropy. We owe it to them
to perform to the highest standards.”
(Note: the Donor Bill of Rights,
created by the National Association
of Fundraising Professionals
(AFP) and endorsed by Gundersen
Lutheran Medical Foundation, is
included in this issue.)
The professionalism of the
Foundation’s development team is
also evident in their credentials.
The CFRE (Certified Fund Raising
Executive) designation signifies an
individual’s mastery of standards
set for core knowledge and skills
required of fundraising executives
as established by North America’s
leading philanthropic associations. To
have five such certified professionals
on a staff the size of the Foundation’s
is relatively unheard of. “Gundersen
Lutheran’s commitment to continuing
professional development holds true
for the Foundation as well,” says
Tanke. “Dr. Connelly (Foundation
Chairman) is a strong believer in
supporting and recognizing this
achievement by his development
officers. We welcome that
accountability for promoting ethics
and integrity in our profession.”
One important measure of
stewardship and fiscal responsibility
is an organization’s annual expense
ratio. The Independent Sector
organization, a leadership forum for
charities, foundations, and corporate
giving programs, endorses the
following statement by The Charities
Review Council:
STANDARD: At least 70 percent
of the organization’s annual
expenses are for program activity
and not more than 30 percent for
management/general and fundraising
combined.
A charity should use its resources
in a responsible, effective and
efficient manner to achieve results
in furtherance of its mission. The
Council believes that the ratio
of program expenses to total
expenses is an indicator of such
use. Donors should reasonably
expect that substantially more than
half of their contribution and the
organization’s expenses are used
for program services. Management
and fundraising expenses should be
reasonable in relation to the results
of the organization and reasonable
over time.
Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation regularly exceeds this
industry standard. In 2008, expenses
directed to mission components
represented 81 percent of total
expenses for the year, while just 19
percent of expenses were for administrative
and development activity.
It goes without saying that 2009
is going to be a challenging year for
those whose work revolves around
raising funds through charitable
donations. For the development team
of Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation, it is an opportunity
to demonstrate the value of their
collective experience and knowledge,
and the importance of ethics and
trust. People choose to give because
they trust their gifts can make a
difference; as the faces and voices
that link donors to the work of the
Foundation, these officers are the
keepers of that trust.
Expressions of Caring
Commemorative and Memorial Gifts
National Doctor’s Day, March 30, was created
in appreciation for the caring physicians who dedicate themselves to our health.
It’s not too late to express appreciation to the Gundersen Lutheran doctors who
A gift that lasts—a lasting tribute
A gift to Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation, in the name of the person or persons you wish
to honor, provides both the donor and the recognized—or bereaved family—the satisfaction of
having made a lasting contribution to others.
Your gift will touch their hearts
In response to your gift, we send an acknowledgment
card to the honored individual or, in the case of a
memorial, to the family. You will be notified that your
gift has been received and dedicated according to your
wishes. The names of those honored by tribute are
published in this publication, Pathfinders. Specific
amounts are confidential and are not published.
she received there.”
“Dear Children’s Miracle
Network, please accept
my gift for the Network.
Twelve years ago, on a snowy
January night, my daughter
was rushed to the Gundersen
Lutheran NICU by ambulance.
She received wonderful care by
the nurses and Dr. Thompson.
Through the kindness and
generosity of the Children’s
Miracle Network, my husband
and I were given money to
buy food while we prayed
and waited for her recovery.
I have never forgotten the
kindness that we received that
night, and although it is well
overdue, I would like to repay
that gift with another.”
Make a Difference — Make a Gift
Heritage Society
For people and organizations who want to make
a difference in the health of our communities,
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation offers a vast
umbrella of philanthropic opportunities. Each gift, no
matter the size, makes you a valued partner in creating a
better future for those we serve.
Gifts may be designated to a specific area of interest,
whether it’s in supporting first-rate medical education
programs, advancing knowledge through research, or
building healthier communities. If you prefer, choose
to make a general gift that may be directed to areas of
greatest need.
Pathfinders readers may be inspired to support one
or more of the hard-working funds we’ve highlighted
in this issue. It is as easy and convenient as using the
enclosed gift envelope, or visiting us online at gundluth.
org/foundation. Our donors can always be assured that the
guidelines they establish will be honored completely.
Each year, the Foundation invites our community to
participate in giving at any level, in any of the following
Heritage Society categories:
Friends $1–199
Advocates $200–499
Associates $500–999
Benefactors $1,000–1,499
Pacesetters $1,500–2,499
Trustees $2,500–4,999
Visionaries $5,000–9,999
Circle of Excellence
$10,000 and above
As an annual giving program, the Heritage Society
recognizes total gifts within a calendar year. Donors
whose cumulative gifts totaled $200 or more between
January 1 and December 31, 2008, will be honored at the
Foundation’s annual Heritage Celebration, to be held this
year on April 22, 23, 24, 2009.
Economic uncertainty gives us all the more reason to
take stock of what is essential in life, to re-evaluate priorities
and renew our commitment to those things we value
most. Together, united by inspired giving, we can ensure
the quality healthcare our patients expect and deserve.
Giving brings communities together, especially in
trying economic times. Gundersen Lutheran Medical
Foundation offers many avenues for giving and is
available to assist donors in their strategic gift
planning. We invite you to contact our Foundation
staff at 608-775-6600 or 800-362-9567, ext. 56600,
to explore these or other gift arrangements.
Direct Gifts
The most popular form is cash or checks, but real
estate, life insurance or stocks and bonds can also be
gifted directly.
Tributes & Memorials
Gifts to commemorate loved ones on a special occasion
can be a meaningful reminder to those who care.
Charitable Bequests
With advance planning, your will can continue to
provide support for your favorite charitable causes.
Life Income Gifts
For those who wish to avoid capital gains and estate
taxes, a Charitable Gift Annuity can offer significant
benefits for both giver and recipient.
been interested in children who are
not doing well in school and referred
for hearing testing because teachers
and pediatricians suspected a hearing
impairment.
Through a series of tests, Dr. Palm
was able to determine that while some
children have problems with hearing,
others have trouble processing in their
brains what their ears could hear. The
reasons for this were multiple:
• background noise interfering with
the child’s being able to interpret
the desired sound;
• poor language skills, making
understanding of input difficult or
impossible;
• trouble attending to what
they hear (Attention Deficient
Hyperactivity Disorder); and
• poor motivation to listen because
they find it so difficult to process
what they hear.
Through collaboration with
Gundersen Lutheran’s Comprehensive
Child Care Center (CCCC), causative
factors could be determined. As a result
of Dr. Palm and Dr. Hartman’s research,
a diagnostic protocol was developed to
be linked with Gundersen Lutheran’s
CCCC, which has access to medical
center behavioral health specialists,
speech/language experts, and medical
education specialists. These specialists
are called upon to solve the mystery
and fully address the root cause of a
child’s disability.
Members of the experienced team that offers
treatment include Dr. Palm (retired), Dr. Hartman,
Dr. Debbie Olufs, Dr. Diane Perrone and Ms. Julie Wise.
Donor Bill of Rights
PHILANTHROPY is based on
voluntary action for the common
good. It is a tradition of giving and
sharing that is primary to the quality
of life. To assure that philanthropy
merits the respect and trust of the
general public, and that donors can
have full confidence in the not-forprofit
organizations and causes they
are asked to support, we declare that
all donors have these rights
I. To be informed of the
organization’s mission, of the way the
organization intends to use donated
resources, and of its capacity to
use donations effectively for their
intended purposes.
II. To be informed of the identity of
those serving on the organization’s
governing board, and to expect the
board to exercise prudent judgment in
its stewardship responsibilities.
III. To have access to the
organization’s most recent financial
statements.
IV. To be assured their gifts will be
used for the purposes for which they
were given.
V. To receive appropriate
acknowledgement and recognition.
VI. To be assured that information
about their donations is handled with
respect and with confidentiality to the
extend provided by law.
VII. To expect that all relationships
with individuals representing
organizations of interest to the donor
will be professional in nature.
VIII. To be informed whether those
seeking donations are volunteers,
employees of the organization or
hired solicitors.
IX. To have the opportunity for their
names to be deleted from mailing
lists that an organization may intend
to share.
X. To feel free to ask questions when
making a donation and to receive
prompt, truthful and forthright
answers.
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation at work
Meet Our Research
Scientists
An open house is being planned
as a unique opportunity to
learn more about the growing
volume of basic science research
supported by Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation. Founded in
1988, the Microbiology Research
Laboratory, led by Steve Callister,
PhD, has consistently produced
innovative basic research that has
resulted in over 100 scientific
publications, several patents and
successful commercial applications,
and significant government
and commercial research and
development funds.
In part due to this remarkable
track record, the Foundation recently
increased their research commitment
by establishing an additional
laboratory dedicated to basic science
studies that specifically concern
blood and solid tumor cancers. The
Hematology/Oncology Research
Laboratory will be directed by
Carl Simon Shelley, DPhil, who
Pictured above, L–R: Steve Callister, PhD
doctors in June for an open house in the
Microbiology Research Laboratory.
was most recently a scientist at
Massachusetts General Hospital in
Boston. Dr. Shelley is most interested
in studies aimed at increasing our
understanding of cellular processes
during various cancers and
identifying potential new diagnostic
and therapeutic targets.
A Grand Vision for
a Grand Space
Theresa Besse, interior design
coordinator for Gundersen
Lutheran’s facility operations
department, recently approached the
Foundation with a special request.
Her vision for the new La Crosse
Clinic entrance and lobby atrium
includes the addition of a baby grand
Foundation friends are cordially
invited to meet these talented
research scientists and their staff
on June 5, from 3–6:30pm, at the
La Crosse Health Science Center,
1300 Badger Street. We hope you can
attend and learn more about these
exciting endeavors and also tour
the research facilities. For further
information, contact the Foundation
office at 608-775-6605.
piano. “Music has healing properties,
so we’d like to encourage the use of
all five senses to enhance our healing
environment,” says Besse about
her proposed “Music is Medicine”
program. Her wish for the ideal piano
would be a wood finish (not black)
baby grand with built in player piano
for times when no one is performing.
If you have an interest in fulfilling
this wish, contact Phil Schumacher at
Internal Medicine Residency Director Steven B. Pearson, MD, has been named Governor
of the Wisconsin Chapter of the American College of Physicians, a singular honor for both
Dr. Pearson and Gundersen Lutheran. The Foundation’s Internal Medicine
»
Residency
Program currently has more residents enrolled (25) than at any time in our history.
Dedication Event Celebrates
William and Ann Barney
The outstanding generosity of local philanthropists
William and Ann Barney was recognized
on November 23, 2008, during a special ceremony in
the newly renovated quarters of Gundersen Lutheran
Medical Foundation. Family and friends gathered for
the formal dedication of the William A. and Ann C.
Barney Board Room, a state-of-the-art conference
space made possible through a gift from the Barneys,
both longtime Foundation volunteers and benefactors.
“Bill and Ann are truly part of our fabric,” says Mark
V. Connelly, MD, chairman of the Foundation Board.
“Of all their gifts and good deeds, I believe this board
room best represents their role with this medical center
and our Foundation.”
In 1972, Bill Barney became one of two lay
trustees to join the Foundation Board. He served two
terms, then returned to the Board and became vicepresident,
and then chairman. That commitment,
vision and leadership is reflected in the purpose of
the extraordinary board room named in the Barney’s
honor. Centrally located, serving the needs of both the
system and the Foundation, the Barney Board Room
includes advanced media capabilities designed to bring
people together, from around the region or around the
world. The Foundation is most grateful for the Barney’s
generosity and friendship.
It’s official! Ann and William Barney are greeted by Dr. Mark
Connelly at the dedication of the new Barney Board Room.
Strategic Expansion for Medical
Education Programs
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation continues
to demonstrate a commitment to the healthcare
needs of our region, and our country, through expanded
medical education offerings. Two Gundersen Lutheran
physicians are actively involved in development of the
Wisconsin Academy for Rural Medicine (WARM), a
new and innovative program to encourage graduates of
the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and
Public Health to practice in rural areas of our state.
David H. Chestnut, MD, the Foundation’s Director
of Medical Education, and Kim Lansing, MD, PhD,
a Gundersen Lutheran family medicine specialist,
have provided exceptional leadership in this statewide
effort. “The WARM Program is designed to address
the profound shortage and maldistribution of physicians
that affects rural Wisconsin,” says Dr. Chestnut.
“Students admitted to the WARM Program must be
Wisconsin residents who have a demonstrated interest
in—and commitment to—the practice of medicine in
rural Wisconsin.”
Potential rural sites for WARM undergraduate
student rotations are currently being evaluated. After
years of planning and preparation, it is expected that
the first cohort of eight (8) WARM students will begin
their clinical clerkship training at Gundersen Lutheran
in July, 2010.
