Notes From The Principal
Lynnwood Families-
Lynnwood Elementary School Newsletter
October 2013
http://www.guilderlandschools.org/lynnwood/index.cfm
I hope you are all enjoying the fall season and have settled in to a “back to school” routine. In the
month of September we have seen Lynnwood come back to life as our students and teachers have
returned, celebrating the joy of learning. In addition to the bus evacuation drill, Share and Celebrate
and the Apple Fun Run, we just recently held our first Peaceful School Bus lesson. The students
spent time with teacher leaders getting to know friends on their bus routes and reviewed bus safety
expectations. Please look for the display of our work in the main hallway. Also, in our hallway you
will see the pictures of many of our Lynnwood students reading over the summer. If you have not
sent in your picture, please feel free to do so as we will be celebrating our “Got Books?” theme all
year.
Our PTA has also been quite busy welcoming new families and enrolling our Lynnwood
families in our PTA. If you have not yet joined our PTA I hope you will consider membership. We
have an active and supportive PTA who works hard to provide many enriching experiences for our
students but, they need your help by joining the PTA as soon as you can. Last month the PTA
made a generous donation to our playground committee so we could add additional equipment to
our new playground. Later this month we will be installing new slides and a “cozy swing.” The
“cozy swing” is a wonderful addition to the playground that we use to support students who need
sensory support to be successful at school. On behalf of the entire Lynnwood staff I wish to thank
our wonderful PTA for their continued support and dedication to our school.
Lastly, in addition to the Halloween Parade, Longhouse Week and Share and Celebrate,
October 29, 2013 will be our first Parent-Teacher Conference Day. In order to make your conference
as productive as possible, you may want to take a few minutes to think about what questions
you may have for your child’s teacher. I have always found it helpful to write them down as
sometimes I get into a conversation and then forget to ask something that has been on my mind.
You should also use this as an opportunity to give information
to the teacher about your child. If there has been a change or
an event at home the teacher may not be aware of, this may be a
wonderful time to discuss it with the teacher. You may even
have wonderful news about your child that you wish to share!
BRAG ON! We love to know about your family and it truly
helps us to make meaningful connections with your child that
will serve them well as they are growing and learning with us.
We work hard to take into account their backgrounds and interests
as we plan for instruction in order to keep them engaged and
involved in their learning. I hope you will find the conferences a
productive time to partner with your child’s teacher this year.
Student Contact and Medical Information Verification/Update Form—HAVE YOU LOGGED ON YET?
Each year, the Guilderland Central School District requests of all parents their most current and accurate
contact information, as well as critical medical information pertaining to their child(ren).
In past years, the district sent home hard copies of student health cards for verification and completion
by parents.
For the 2013-14 school year and beyond, we are now asking parents to make full use of our online
systems for this verification process.
LEARN MORE This information is extremely important, as our ability to appropriately respond to student
medical concerns and to maintain timely communications with parents is dependent on this verification process.
Please take a few moments to verify and/or update your child's information as soon as possible. If you have any
problems setting up your parent account, contact Kim TenEyck at 456-6200, ext 3123.
October Hooked on Health Hint
Halloween Parade
There will be a Halloween
parade on thursDAY,
October 31st at 1:00 PM in
the Lynnwood building.
Parents are welcome to
view the parade in the
Lynnwood cafeteria.
More detailed
information COMING soon.
DID YOU KNOW… Parents can be a
good healthy role model for their children.
Why is getting active so important?
Hooked On Health Hint:
The facts are clear: By exercising for as
little as 30 minutes each day you can reduce
your risk of heart disease. Without
regular physical activity, the body slowly
loses its strength and ability to function
well. Physical activity = living a longer,
healthier life.
Bake Sales and Fund Raisers
Now that school is in full swing - so are classroom fund raising efforts. Each classes may choose to
have bake sales to earn money for field trips, class projects, etc.
Here are a few friendly reminders for parents
to help our bake sales continue to run smoothly:
-Please attach a brief note when sending in an item that contains peanuts/peanut oil.
-Use clear plastic wrap to cover baked goods. This way the item can be seen on display at the
bake sale.
-If time allows and you would like to, you may wrap items
individually in plastic wrap or plastic bags.
-The only hand that needs to touch the baked goods is the
customer buying it.
-Thank you for supporting classroom fund raising efforts.
Whether you volunteer, bake or purchase, your support is greatly
appreciated!

Nursing Notes
Laura Rutkowski, R.N., Lynnwood School Nurse
Welcome back students! Just a reminder to parents that at any point in time, someone
in school could be coming down with illnesses such as colds, flu, strep throat,
Coxsackie virus, etc. We do not send out notices regarding this for confidentiality reasons.
Keep a watchful eye for complaints of illness from your child(ren).
Paramount to preventing the spread of infection are the following:

Hand washing; after bathroom use, before eating and after using common areas
like computers, cafeteria, playground or P.E. equipment.
Students should stay home if they feel ill, have a fever of 100 °
F or better, have a frequent cough, nasal drainage or sneezing.
Did you know: A cough or sneeze can propel germs up to
12 feet and travels up to 100 MPH!

Of course always cover your sneeze or cough with the bend in
your elbow so as not to launch those germs!
Make sure to get your flu shot as even healthy people can get the flu and it
can be serious!
Autumn is still tick season! Be aware—check
your child after he/she spends time outdoors. Here is some
helpful information to keep you and your family (and pets)
tick-free this fall.
Where do ticks live? Ticks live outdoors and feed on warm-blooded animals.
Leaf piles or litter, mulch piles, plant shoots, woodpiles, shrubs and weedy areas.
What’s the best way to control ticks? If ticks are a problem in your yard, consider
applying an outdoor insecticide that is labeled for ticks. A perimeter treatment can help
prevent ticks from migrating indoors.
Apply an insect repellent with DEET to clothes and exposed skin. Wear light-colored
clothing so ticks are easy to spot. Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to keep
ticks outside clothing.
If you have been in a tick-infested area, check for ticks, especially in skin folds (beneath
arms, behind ears, groin area). Wash clothing in hot water and dry for an hour at high
heat to kill ticks that may be hiding in seams.
Don’t forget to treat pets and check them frequently, especially after they’ve been outdoors
in tick-friendly environs.
