Physical Education 9-12
Students participate in a variety of units throughout the year. There will be 8 mandated activities for all students during their 4 year high
school career. Experiences are directed toward team and personal performance. The curriculum is knowledge based for future utilization
as adult consumers. Throughout the year, components of fitness are taught and reinforced to provide the students with information to
encourage healthy lifestyle choices. Twice a year, students participate in a personal fitness assessment for an opportunity to see the
results of their current life style choices.
Grading Policy:
Participation is 80% of your grade. Being changed into appropriate clothing and being to class on time means you’re able to earn your
grade for that class! Everyday in class students are graded on participation using a rubric from 0 through 4 points.
Participation on a 4 point scale:
Daily Scoring Rubric
80% based on 20 classes; 4 possible points per day
4. Student is prepared for class. Student demonstrates fair play and appropriate competitive behavior (e.g., cooperating with other
players, demonstrating leadership, making correct calls, preventing/resolving conflicts, complimenting/encouraging others). Student
participates energetically and safely, demonstrating self-control and respect for the positive and safe experience of others.
3. Student is prepared for class. Student participates energetically and safely, demonstrating self-control, fair play, and respect for
others.
2. Student is prepared for class. Student participates safely, demonstrating self-control, fair play, and respect for others, but with
inconsistent energy and effort.
1. Student is prepared for class. Student lacks self-control at times and/or need reminders and encouragement from others to
participate in a safe, fair, energetic, and/or respectful manner.
0. Student has no effort or participation. (Ex. Being unprepared)
At the end of EACH SEMESTER students will receive one of the following grades depending on their performance in PE. They will
receive one final grade in January and one final grade in June.
The point system is divided as follows:
S+ (90% - 100%) S (76% - 89%) S- ( 69% - 75%) U (0 – 68%)
Knowledge and/or Skill are 10% of your grade. Homework, quizzes, classroom assessment and projects are a few of the methods for
determining your knowledge and/or skill grade.
Physical Fitness Testing is 10% of your grade. All students are REQUIRED to complete physical fitness testing 2x a year. If a student does
not complete all five of the test requirements, they will receive a 0% until they make-up what they have missed.
Interims: Each semester, students will receive 3 interim reports in PE. This report is to notify the student and guardian about current
performance in class as well as any assignments, classes, or quizzes the student must make-up. The first quarter and third quarter
report card grades are considered interims in physical education. The final grade is received at the end of the semester and will be in
their high school transcript.
Make Ups for being absent or unprepared will be conducted on every “D” day during advisory in the WEST gymnasium from 9:35am-
10:30am throughout the semester. Students must be ON TIME and changed for activity. When a student is absent, they must make
contact with their teacher as soon as they return to school. Students MUST MAKE-UP the class WITHIN the QUARTER the absence or

unprepared occurred. Grading for a make up is the same as a regular class (4 points max.). There are NO make-ups for students that
choose to cut class.
Medical Excuses: All original medical notes signed by a physician are to be brought, by the student, to the Health office. A copy will be
given to the proper physical education teacher and placed on file. While under a medical excuse, students are expected to continue to
change into their physical education attire. Excuses from parents are respected by the physical education teacher for that class and the
student is required to change
Medicals: 1 day to 3 weeks: Students are EXPECTED to attend their regular PE class. Students are REQUIRED to change their
clothes and be involved in class. Modified activity will be provided.
Medicals: Beyond 3 weeks: Students who have a medical excuse, which lasts longer than a three-week time frame will be enrolled in
Adapted Physical Education. Students with special medical situations will be given an alternative assignment by their PE teacher.
Adapted Physical Education: This program is administered in the weight room to focus on the students strengths and keep them
physically active during their advisory block. Students will be signed to the library during their regular PE class. A member of the
physical education staff works closely with each student to accomplish personal goals. (For example, a student who has broken
his/her ankle and is on a medical excuse for 6 weeks will be placed on a program that focuses on upper body conditioning and
abdominal strength.)
Home Instruction: Students who are out of school for an extended period of time are REQUIRED to complete assignments that are
given by their physical education instructor. Assignments are due by the end of the marking period in order for the student to receive
credit.
