ITEMS DISCUSSED BY TOPIC:
1. Welcome
Nancy Andress and Al Martino, Supervisor of Foreign Language, welcomed the group and
introductions were made. Nancy reviewed the agenda.
2. Review
Nancy reviewed the FLES Committee’s goal and outline of work:
Goal: To investigate foreign language instruction at the elementary level and to make
recommendations for the teaching of foreign language K-5 for the 2005-06 school year.
Committee Tasks:
• review research base
• examine models of delivery
• visitations
• planning
• budget/staffing
• committee report to Superintendent of Schools, December, 2004
The next step will be to do visitations.
3. Visitations
Al explained that finding a list of FLES programs was difficult. At State Ed, this list is developed
from BEDS data. Al selected the following schools to possibly visit:
Albany Montessori Magnet (French)
Academy of the Holy Names (French)
Schenectady - Howe School (Spanish)
Edgemont
Bronxville
Tuxedo
Menands
Al and Nancy will set up the visitations for the month of October. They will contact committee
members with dates of visits.
The group reviewed the questions to be used for the visitation. These will be retyped and sent to
committee members who will be on the visitation.
Nancy and Al will set up the visits and e-mail information and directions. The list of questions
will be used as a guide.
