Jim <strong>Schmid</strong> is a Partner in <strong>Grant</strong> <strong>Thornton</strong><br />
<strong>LLP</strong>’s Forensic and Valuation Services practice<br />
located in Detroit.<br />
Experience<br />
Jim is a highly experienced investigator of fraud,<br />
waste and abuse involving both financial<br />
statement fraud and the conversion of assets. He<br />
provides economic and damages analysis as an<br />
expert witness and litigation support consultant.<br />
Additionally, he has acted as an arbitrator in post<br />
acquisition disputes involving accounting related<br />
issues and as a court appointed independent<br />
forensic accounting expert.<br />
Jim began his career as an industrial engineer<br />
with a large tier'one automotive supplier. In<br />
this role, he performed product line and part<br />
cost studies, conducted time and motion<br />
studies, and optimization of production<br />
routing. He was also a director with Coopers &<br />
Lybrand in San Francisco, owner of a<br />
construction management firm, and vice<br />
president of a large automobile supplier.<br />

Representative Experience<br />
Fraud, Waste and Abuse<br />
Jim has led fraud investigations in almost every<br />
major industry including automotive,<br />
construction, media, education and services.<br />
These investigations have involved, financial<br />
statement fraud, conversion of assets, corruption<br />
and piercing the corporate veil. Jim also has<br />
significant experience testifying as an expert on<br />
issues of fraud and civil damages.<br />
Litigation<br />
Jim has testified as an expert witness on GAAP<br />
accounting issues and damage calculations for<br />
contract, intellectual property, construction and<br />
post acquisition disputes.<br />
He has also testified on damages in a variety<br />
of types of litigation including patent and<br />
trademark infringement, breach of contract,<br />
construction claims, post acquisition disputes<br />
and business interruption.<br />
Construction Forensics<br />
Jim is the National Construction Forensics<br />
Practice Leader. He has testified and/or advised<br />
clients regarding construction claims, fraud,<br />
contract compliance, close out audits and project<br />
financial oversight. Jim has provided ongoing<br />
financial oversight for projects as large a $5.0<br />
billion, both domestically and internationally.

His testimony experience in the area of<br />
intellectual property includes trademark<br />
valuation, trademark infringement, and patent<br />
valuation in the automotive industry.<br />

Accounting Systems and Methods of Pricing<br />
Damages, and 4) Payment Delay Claims.<br />
