100 Years of History & Leadership
Juliette “Daisy” Gordon Low founded
the Girl Scouts on the principles of
innovation, diversity and inclusion. Three
of the first Troop Leaders were Jewish.
For 100 years Girl Scouts has been
celebrating and nurturing the leader in
every girl, and girls have been changing
the world.

The Movement
Girl Scouts was founded 100 years ago on the principles of innovation,
diversity and inclusion. Today, Girl Scouts remains committed to changing
the leadership landscape in the US, by providing girls with leadership skills
and instilling in them a desire to take action to make the world a better place.
Today’s Girl Scouts will help fuel the
pipeline of female leadership in this
country, and provide every girl the skills
she needs to be a leader in her life.
Girl Scouting works. While only 1 in 10 girls is a Girl Scout, 80% of women
business owners, 69% of female US Senators, and 67% of female members
of the House of Representatives were Girl Scout.

Who We serve
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania,
Inc. (GSEP) operates as
an independent, nonprofit
organization chartered by the
national Girl Scouts of the USA to
provide leadership development
opportunities for girls in nine
counties: Berks, Bucks, Carbon,
Chester, Delaware, Lehigh,
Montgomery, Northampton and
Philadelphia. During fiscal year 2012,
GSEP continued to provide the Girl
Scout Leadership Experience to
close to 41,000 girls with the help of
more than 15,000 adult volunteers.

Executive Message
What a privilege it has been to lead the Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
during 2012 as we and our 3.2 million sister Girl Scouts across the
country and around the world celebrated 100 years of Girl Scouting!
At the GSUSA 2011 National Council Session in Houston, Anna Maria
Chávez was named GSUSA’s new CEO, and together we kicked off
2012: The Year of the Girl.
2012 was a year filled with celebrating the past, embracing our mission
today, and working toward our vision for the future where the leadership
landscape in every community is gender-balanced. The future of girls
starts with the state of women today . . . and we have a lot of work to do!
Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania is committed to building the case for
supporting girls and making sure we help develop girls as leaders who will
change the landscape of our society. We do this with the tireless support
of our volunteers, parents, donors, and staff.
We hope you enjoy this year’s annual report. To fully appreciate our
place in the Girl Scouts movement, we have included a few highlights of
100th anniversary celebrations from across the country.
At home, Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania’s organization plan for 2012
saw several landmark achievements. The following pages detail our
nine strategic priorities: 100th anniversary celebrations, an engaged
membership, essential volunteers, GSEP culture, personal interactions,
modernization, communications, partnerships, and funding.
Thank you for all you do to help build girls of courage, confidence
and character, who are making our communities and our world
a better place.

Celebrating 100 Years
of Leadership
GSEP seized the opportunity to leverage this historic milestone to raise
awareness about the benefits of Girl Scouting, educate our community on
girl issues, build a broader base of investment in girls, and of course, celebrate
the history. In celebration of the GSUSA 100th anniversary, GSEP instituted
many signature events and initiatives, some of which are mentioned here:
Troop PA and 100th Anniversary Honorary Committee
An honorary Girl Scout Troop was formed for women who hold seats in the
PA Assembly, including 11 State Senators and 33 State Representatives.
Chaired by the First Lady of Pennsylvania, 95 women leaders from PA were
members of this special committee generating support for the Girl Scouts.
Troop 2012
In partnership with area hospitals, girls born on March 12, 2012, were offered
Lifetime Membership in the Girl Scouts.
Century of the Girl Expo – April 21 - 22
This special weekend served more than 3,000 members through a wide
range of interactive exhibits, entertainment, national and local speakers,
workshops, and other activities.
10,000 Trees with the PA Horticultural Society – May
In collaboration with Girl Scouts of Western PA and Heart of PA, Girl Scouts
across PA planted 10,000 trees in parks, neighborhoods, and their communities.
Olave Baden-Powell Society (OB-PS) International Meeting – May 16 - 20
GSEP welcomed more than 200 international members of OB-PS,
who enable girls and young women to develop their fullest potential as
responsible citizens of the world.
National Trails Day: Valley Forge National Park – June 2
This event offered a day of trail education, hiking, and service projects.
Wawa Welcome America Parade – July 4
Girl Scouts marched together in uniform with a special 100th
anniversary banner in Old City Philadelphia.
GSEP Joins the Great Girl Scout Hike – October
Girl Scouts in Eastern Pennsylvania joined sister Girl Scouts from Maine to
Georgia to hike the Appalachian Trail.

Engaged Membership
Broadening our appeal to attract new members and
retaining engaged girls and volunteers remained our top
priority. Special attention was given to membership in
urban areas including Philadelphia, Allentown, Reading,
Norristown, and Chester. The quality and content of
our programs continued to evolve by using the Girl
Scout Leadership Experience and national Leadership
Journeys curriculum. This resulted in more than
9,000 girls attending programs in five priority areas
including Science Technology Engineering and Math
(STEM), Outdoor, Leadership, Environment, and
Entrepreneurship. In 2012, special focus was given to
providing short-term series offerings for older girls.
GSEP’s best example of leadership in action is the
more than 1,556 girls who, with the help of important
volunteers and staff earned their Gold, Silver, and
Bronze Awards in FY 2012. This represents more than
32,000 hours of service, leaving a lasting impact on
communities throughout Eastern Pennsylvania.

Essential Volunteers
The element essential to program success is a positive volunteer
experience. To improve the recruitment, retention, and effectiveness
of volunteers, we restructured volunteer management. By reorganizing
the professional staff structure more positions for training, support,
recruitment, and placement were created. Additionally, an automated
volunteer management system was put in place using Volunteer
Management System (VMS). The end result has been a more effective
and efficient relationship between the professional staff and volunteers,
as well as a more cost-effective method for processing volunteer
applications and security clearances.
Culture & Personal Interactions
The diversity of GSEP’s geographic region is unique. We proudly serve
girls from urban, suburban, and rural communities with the support
of local volunteers. To build on our rich heritage and serve the needs
of girls today, we invested in education and training for volunteers and
professional staff. Maintaining a girl-centered environment and raising
the standard within our culture, we increased opportunities for all. Staff
attended enhanced Product Program training, and time management
and productivity training. We also held Leadership Exchange for Adult
Development (LEAD) meetings, Pot of Gold workshops, CEO/GEO
meetings, and Strategy Cafés; all of which were well attended on a
voluntary basis resulting in increased volunteer and staff team building.

Modernization & Communications
To improve customer service and infrastructure, including business
systems and properties, we relocated the Berks Service Center to
210 George Street in Reading, PA, providing greater access to many
more girls and volunteers. Product Program inventory management
improvements streamlined the flow of inventory.
To improve communication with GSEP members, parents, and other
stakeholders, e.g., contributors, several initiatives were activated. To keep
pace with the ever changing tempo of daily life, we made membership
managers more responsive by providing them with 3G technologies for
field support; contemporary lifestyles also drove our testing a pilot credit
card reader for girls to use for the cookie program and Automated Clearing
House (ACH) for automated transfer of funds for Product Programs.
In an effort to keep customer service high, we pursued new uses of
technologies that engage and serve girls and volunteers. This year,
for the first time, we established a partnership with The Tierney Group
which resulted in increased paid and earned media exposure. We made
available the monthly E-News, SUM news, program alerts, and quarterly
Leader News as well as first time start ups of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube,
Flickr, and Pinterest accounts.

Leveraging partnerships with public
and private entities is increasingly
important for membership growth
and diversified program delivery. In
2012, through a partnership with
GSUSA, AT&T, and the School District
of Philadelphia, more than 250
high school girls from underserved
communities in the City of
Philadelphia participated in a yearlong
STEM program based on the
Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
Long-term partnerships were
strengthened with United Ways
across GSEP’s footprint, especially
with United Way of Berks, United
Way of Greater Lehigh Valley,
United Way of Boyertown, and the
United Way of Bucks. Partnerships
with area colleges and universities
including Drexel University,
Philadelphia University, Cedar Crest
College, Alvernia University, and
Albright College helped impact
membership and programming.

Gold Award Spotlight
Kimberly A. Wodzanowski
Oakville Service Unit
Troop 21292
Kimberly’s project “Fields of Green” addressed
the lack of recycling that occurs in her
community. A “Green Team” of volunteers
collected recyclables left at Falcon Field,
the Pennsbury High School football stadium.
This effort prevented over 960 pounds of
recyclables from needlessly winding up in
landfills. The team also led collections at large
events such as the Marching Band Festival,
William Penn Turkey Bowl, district testing, and
other sports events keeping thousands of
recyclables from becoming trash. Kimberly
also gave educational presentations to school
board and township meeting attendees.

Pat McFarland
Downingtown, PA
2012 Recipient of the
Gertrude K. McGonigle Award
Pat exemplifies the spirit of the Gertrude K.
McGonigle Award, which recognizes one
individual each year who is a proven role
model and exemplifies the values and
traditions of Girl Scouting. A registered Girl
Scout for over 20 years, Pat truly understands
the “girl led” process and inspires girls to find
their voice and always do their best. Pat has
also been a long-time supporter and director
of the ever-popular Maple Sugaring Program.

To successfully complete GSEP’s priorities required an expanded and
diversified GSEP funding base. Emphasis was placed on increasing
contributed revenue as a key strategy, including special outreach to
corporations and foundations for new and increased support. In FY
2012, contributed revenue increased by 16.4 percent, an increase of
$182,829 dollars over FY 2011. Additionally, GSEP activated an Alumnae
Steering Committee of more than 15 people in all geographic areas and
professional careers from education to accounting, who will assist
with special fundraising efforts for girls and increased advocacy and reengagement
across the Council with alumnae. During the same time,
the cookie program revenue increased by 1.8 percent, more than
$268,000 over FY 2011. GSEP also restructured and expanded
merchandising in retail stores and for special 100th anniversary
events with similar increased earnings.
