A barcode is a series of parallel vertical lines (bars)
and spaces, that can be read by barcode scanners. It
is used worldwide as part of product packaging, as
price tags, carton labels, on invoices, even in credit
card bills. And when it is read by a scanner, a wealth
of data is made available at the user's end.
When used with the EAN.UCC numbering system,
the barcode becomes unique and universal and can
be read and recognised anywhere in the world.
For instance, the barcode on a toothpaste is
scanned and uniquely identified at a retail outlet -
and the computer screen immediately tells the
shop assistant the product name, description and
price. No need to note it down manually, no
errors, no disputes.

You get a user name and password to log in into EAN
India's website www.eanindia.org. You can then
upload your company and product details on this
website, which is linked to the global EAN database.
So, if a buyer in Germany wants to know about you,
all he has to do is to key in your company name in the
search function of EAN Germany's site and he has
complete information on your company, your
products, contact numbers and what have you.
Instantly.
Or visualise a situation where a product of yours has
landed up on the desk of a buyer you don't even
know of. He sees the number under the bar code on
your product, keys it into the EAN website of any of
the 98 EAN organisations--and you have a new
potential customer who knows how to contact you.
Other trading partners in your supply chain would
benefit as well. The freight forwarder gets advance
information of the weight, dimensions and other
product attributes of your consignments through
EAN India's GEPIR service. Using EAN.UCC
numbering standards, the distributor and stockist are

The United Nations created UN/EDIFACT, which
sets down the world standards for EDI. We, at EAN,
offer you EANCOM®, which is a subset of the
UN/EDIFACT messages. This provides clear
definitions and explanations which allow trading
partners to exchange commercial documents in a
simple, accurate and cost-effective manner.
You may have heard of the Global Commerce
Initiative (GCI), a worldwide voluntary body created
by 60 of the world's biggest FMCG manufacturers
and retailers to improve the performance of
international supply chains for consumer goods and
help reach goods out to the consumer faster,
cheaper and on time. This influential body fully
endorses the EAN.UCC standards for identification
and communication of products, consignments and
locations in supply chains.
The EAN.UCC global electronic communication
standard has been developed based on the
Extensible Markup Language (XML) and endorsed
by GCI called the 'Global Commerce Internet
Protocol' (GCIP). XML is a new technology for
internet-based communication.
The EAN.UCC system is also recognised by the
International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
