Figure 2 depicts greater gender equity in the junior academic ranks--although not as robust as desired--suggesting that as female junior faculty are retained and achieve higher ranks over time the gender gap would diminish. As shown in Figure 3, the Howard University faculty, while predominantly African American (69 percent), is nonetheless exceedingly rich in its diversity with 19 percent being White and 9 percent being Asian/Pacific Islander. This level of faculty diversity contributes to an environment in which Howard students are exposed to differing perspectives in the acquisition of an education.
