The <strong>Howard</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> Awards in the Social, Behavioral and Economic<br />

Sciences (SBES) are provided to underrepresented minority graduate students in these<br />

disciplines at <strong>Howard</strong>, to assist graduate students with successful matriculation through<br />

Ph.D. programs and for entry into the professoriate in the SBES disciplines.<br />

Section 2.<br />

PROGRAM OVERVIEW<br />

The mission of the Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences Program at <strong>Howard</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> is to increase the number of underrepresented minorities receiving the Ph.D.<br />

and entering the professoriate in the SBES disciplines. To this end, the <strong>Howard</strong> SBES<br />

project offers opportunities for graduate students to apply for travel awards to present<br />

research at meetings and conferences in their related fields of study.<br />

Section 3.<br />

ALLOWABLE COSTS<br />

Travel: Specifically, the SBES provides awards of up to $1,500 for travel to present<br />

research. Travel awards can support lodging, transportation, meals, and registration<br />

costs for a conference in which the student is presenting his/her research findings.<br />

Travel Awards can be used to attend meetings and conferences within the continental<br />

United States. Travel outside of the continental limits of the United States is acceptable<br />

to Hawaii and Canada. Otherwise, foreign travel outside of the continental United States<br />

is prohibited.<br />

Student applicants that apply at least 30 days prior to the date of travel are eligible for<br />

an advance of 85% of the total estimated travel costs. Any unused portions of the travel<br />

advance must be returned to <strong>Howard</strong> <strong>University</strong>. With the exception of meal receipts,<br />

travelers are required to submit original receipts for all of the expenses incurred,<br />

including the boarding pass stubs from airline travel, from which a travel summary<br />

report will be processed. The reimbursement of expenses will be determined based on<br />

<strong>Howard</strong> <strong>University</strong> Travel Guidelines which are available online at<br />

http://y2kc.howard.edu/Travel/travndx.htm.<br />

Section 4.<br />

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong>s<br />

Any underrepresented minority graduate student majoring in economics, political<br />

science, psychology, or sociology may apply for these awards. <strong>Graduate</strong> students must<br />

be US citizens or lawful permanent residents who possess an Alien Registration<br />

Receipt Card (I-151 or I-551). Individuals on temporary or student visas are not eligible<br />

to apply. A minimum grade point average of 3.2 is required for award eligibility.<br />

All applicants must indicate a faculty research mentor. The faculty mentor must be a<br />

faculty member of <strong>Howard</strong> <strong>University</strong> and must have demonstrated expertise in any of<br />

the disciplines supported by this award. No application will be accepted without the<br />

faculty mentor’s signature.<br />

Section 5.<br />

SUBMISSION INFORMATION<br />

A complete application for <strong>Graduate</strong> SBES Travel Awards must include the following:<br />

Completed application form with the faculty research mentor‘s signature, and the<br />

budget of proposed travel expenses<br />

Research abstract<br />

Presentation acceptance letter (printout of emailed notice is acceptable)<br />

Unofficial transcript(s) (printout available on Bison Web)<br />
