A Message From
Al Quiroga
Chairman of the SWCC Board of Governors
Well the Holidays have come and gone. I hope
everyone had a wonderful time, and that the Holidays
brought happiness and joy to you and your family.
Please join me in thanking your Board members
and the Club management for a great year. Your Board
has set the bar very high in 2006, and I hope we are
able to meet or exceed expectations in 2007. I look
forward to another year on the Board, and I ask for
your continued support and trust in the Board as we
move forward with the agenda for the New Year.
This year we look forward to completing the
bunker work that has progressed ahead of schedule.
As soon as the bunker work completes, the Member
Capital Fund will begin to accumulate funds, which
allows the Board to consider other improvements
that the members consider their top priority. It is
important to note that the Board recognizes that
although many improvements have been made to the
Club in 2006, there are many other improvements
pending, after all, the Club is now 25 years old. It
is the goal of the Board to be fair and balanced in
approving projects to move forward to provide benefit
to the various Club activities (golf, tennis, athletics,
swimming, and social). Reflecting back on 2006, I
believe the Board has been fair and balanced: The
ballroom was refurbished, added the The 4400 Bar,
added The Deck for dining outdoors, golf course
improvements, refinished the indoor and outdoor
pools, refinished the outdoor tennis courts, replaced
weights and equipment in the Athletics Building, and
expanded the golf and tennis Pro Shop.
As a first order of business in 2007, newly
elected Board members will be installed. Each year
the Board holds elections to accomplish two things.
One, to provide a means for members to be elected to
the Board and represent a voice to the Board for the
membership. Newly elected members will be installed
at the January Board meeting. Secondly, Board
members who have fulfilled their terms, or have
reached their term limits are replaced. We welcome
newly elected members, and look forward to the ideas
they bring to the table.
I look forward to another great year of serving on
your Board.

ten existing clubs and ready to roll out the remaining nine in the new year! So if you see

The very first Sweetwater Women’s Association luncheon for the New Year is scheduled for Friday,
January 5, 2007 at 11am and will be at the new Amici’s restaurant in Town Center that’s already
becoming a Sugar Land favorite. Jeff Vallone (of the famous family behind Tony’s) teams up with
executive chef Bruce McMillian for this crisp and contemporary Italian restaurant in bustling
Sugar Land.
Learn to bellydance at February luncheon
For its February luncheon, the Sweetwater Women’s Association and
its members are planning to lose their collective holiday weight in the
most interesting and peculiar way – they are learning to bellydance!
Zahirah’s Bellydance Studio will be teaching a one hour class in
the art of Middle Eastern Dance (Bellydance) to the Sweetwater
Women’s Association on Friday, February 2nd, 2007 at 11:00am at
the Sweetwater Country Club. Members of the women’s association
are looking forward to a new and very different kind of program
which will include instruction from Zahira and Ayana, two very
professional dancers who, collectively, have over thirty-five years of

Update:
Elkins, Dulles, Clements, and Austin qualified
for District team playoffs. In the semi-finals,
Austin defeated Elkins 10-1 and Clements
topped Dulles 10-6. The top two teams in
the District squared off in the finals with
Clements taking a 4-3 lead after doubles play.
Austin took all six boys singles and Clements
took five girls singles. With the score tied
at 9-9 and everyone watching, the #1 girls
singles determined the champion. Austin’s
Annie Hang won 7-6,7-5 over Clement’s
Audrey Wang. This is the third year in a row
that Austin has taken the team title.
Austin and Clements represented
the district at Regional
competition.
Austin beat Houston Lamar 10-2 and
Clements advanced through the round
of sixteen. Both teams were stopped in the
quarter-final round with Austin losing to Clear
Lake 10-2 and Clements falling to Stratford
10-6. Congratulations to all sweetwater

MGA Sweetwater Cup
November 4-5, 2006
The annual MGA Sweetwater Cup is an
invitational event made up of the top 38 MGA
point leaders from the 2006 season together with
2 staff professionals. A pre-event stag dinner
and team draw assigned players to either Blue
team or Red team to square of in Ryder Cup style
competitions over the 54 holes of match play. In
the end, the team results were the closest in history
and came down to the very last match before
crowning the Red Team as the 2006 Sweetwater
Cup Champions. Congratulations to the Red
Team Captained by Joe Mathis, Jr.

Voting Ballots casted by 78 members of the MGA during the pre tournament breakfast meeting

Hill, and Joe Mathis Sr. Congratulations!!!!
The Election Tournament was a Two Member 6 hole scramble, modified alternate shot, and
best ball using a new handicap formula which kept the entire field within 9 shot between first and
last place. Honors went to Greg Apke and Mark Ryan for a Brilliant round of 63 followed by
Daniel Degado, Jef Jacobson, Bill Hagler, and Doug Outler tied for second with a score of 64.
Senior Men's Golf Association
SMGA Club Championship
The Senior Men’s Championship was a two
day tournament played on Oct. 18 & 19.
There were two flights that are named after
the tees from which they are played. The
“White Flight” and the “Gold Flight”. You
have to be seventy years old to play in the Gold
Flight. The golfer having the low gross score
in the white flight is the SMGA Champion
and will have his name added to the plaque
on thesecond floor plus receive a trophy. This
year’s winner is Fred Kahn (Shown on the right
in photo below). In addition, trophies are also
awarded for the low net score in the “White
Flight” (Michael Warner) and the low gross(
Gene Lewis) and low net (Michael Kardoush)
scores in the “Gold Flight”
Practice Area Reminders
We have a wonderful practice facility at Sweetwater Country Club. For the safety and courtesy of
your fellow members, please note the following:
1. If stations are set to be on the mats on the front end of the driving range, please hit from the
mats only.
2. Please hit from inside the roped area on the back end of the range. This is for the safety of
everyone practicing. Additionally, please hit from the center of this area so that you don’t
accidentally catch the ropes and injure yourself.
3. Please hit only wedges to the pitching green. It is unsafe to hit full shots to the range from this
area. Please use the range for all full shots.
4. Please do not pitch to the chipping green from the back tee area. It is unsafe to hit wedges to this
green. Chipping, putting, and pitch/run shots are short game shots for this green.
5. Please be observant and considerate of fellow members using the short game areas for practice.
Please try to stay out of range of others…we have had numerous close calls and a few injuries
due to errant shots.
6. Please do not practice in or remove balls from the teaching area reserved for Deb Vangellow, our
Director of Instruction. While it may appear to be “available”, she is likely going to return soon
from an on-course instruction session or a short game lesson session.
7. Please do not practice in the areas set up for a group clinic or instruction session for our
members. While these areas may appear to be “available”, it is likely that the group is preparing
for arrival after an indoor presentation and will be on the practice area shortly thereafter for
the outdoor instruction session.
We appreciate your cooperation and attention to these safety and courtesy reminders. This will
enable all of our members to enjoy our fine practice facilities at Sweetwater!
