The Greek

In a move aimed at building yet

another piece of a unique short

sea integrated network the Group

has become the largest shareholder

in Minoan Lines, the leading Greek

Ferry and Ro/Ro operator. At the

end of January this year Atlantica di

Navigazione purchased a 30% shareholding

in the Athens-listed company

whose fleet of 6 large Ro/Ro-passenger

ships serves three main routes:

mean that Grimaldi clients in North

Europe and the Mediterranean will

now have a whole range of new destinations

available to them, by using

a combination of the Group’s services

and landbridges.

while strengthening the Group’s position

on the Adriatic routes that it already

serves through its Adriatic Lines. Last

year Minoan transported over 1.5 million

passengers, over 260,000 cars and

about 150,000 Ro/Ro units on both its

international and domestic trades.

“Minoan is an excellent company with

a good name, strong management and

some of the best ships in the Adriatic

– noted the Grimaldi Group co-managing

director Emanuele Grimaldi -. It has

a truly Greek identity and strong roots

in Crete. It would be foolish to change

these things. It will still remain a Greek

company, headquartered in Heraklion,

just as Atlantic Container Line is still

Swedish and Finnlines is Finnish.”

“Indeed – continued Mr Grimaldi – it will

be a fruitful partnership whose reach

goes well beyond Italy and Greece.

I’m sure that by integrating the routes

of Grimaldi and Minoan Lines we can

serve the Balkan markets for their shipments

to Spain and vice-versa. Trucks

can board the Minoan ships in Igoumenitsa

or Patras, disembark in Ancona,

drive overland to Livorno or Civitavecchia,

and then board a Grimaldi vessel

again for Barcelona or vice versa. This

will provide a substantial contribution

to reduce Europe’s road congestion

and pollution”.

Minoan’s chief executive Antonis

Maniadakis welcomed the move and

stated: “It’s an extremely exciting development

– he said - We are looking

forward to a healthy co-operation that

will be good for both our groups and

all shareholders”.

In a separate move, Grimaldi sold the

16.8% stake it owned in Anek Lines, another

Greek Ferry operator.

As the delivery date for the super

cruise ferry “Cruise Roma” is

approaching, the indications

during sea trials is that she is performing

in an extraordinary way – both in terms

of speed (more than 30 knots) and seaworthiness.

The vessel is pictured during

sea trials which took place in late December

last year in the Gulf of Naples, close

to the Grimaldi headquarters. At 55,000

gt, 225 metres in length and 30.4 metres

beam, and with a cost close to 150 million

euros, the vessel is set to become the

largest vessel of its type deployed on the

Mediterranean ferry routes.

She will be able to cover the Rome (Civitavecchia)/Barcelona

route in 20 hours in

all weather conditions. Calling her a ferry

would indeed be diminishing the reality

as when it comes to the sheer space and

variety of public spaces and the number

and standard of cabins, she is in reality

closer to a cruiseliner. A unique Drivers

Club will be the preferred meeting point

for our professional passengers while the

ship also features a large onboard Casino

(let’s call it the closest Casino to Rome)

and a top Health Centre.

In terms of cargo capacity the introduction

of the Cruise Roma – and later this

year of her sistership Cruise Barcelona

– will mark a further, substantial development

for the Motorways of the Sea in the

Mediterranean area. Her 3,000-linear metre

and 215 car hold capacity is in fact unparalleled

and will increase by some 70%

the capacity on the Rome (Civitavecchia)/

Barcelona route, when both ships are

deployed on the service. The Grimaldi

Group has a total of four such ships on

order with specialist Italian shipbuilder

Fincantieri.

Cruise Barcelona

hits the Sea

While the Cruise Roma was at the final stage

of fitting out, her identical sistership Cruise

Barcelona entered the sea for the first time on

a sunny and windy saturday in mid February.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was performed

by the Godmother Cristina Grimaldi, wife of

co-managing director Gianluca Grimaldi, who

sent the champagne bottle smashing against

the bow of the ship. The launching ceremony of

the Cruise Barcelona was particularly touching

because, while the ship was slipping away towards

the sea at the Castellammare di Stabia

shipyard (near Naples), she was accompanied

by a spectacular fireworks display and by cries

of joy of the shipyard’s workers.

When the vessel is completed at the end of

next summer the Cruise Barcelona will join the

Cruise Roma on the Rome (Civitavecchia)/Barcelona

daily service. The introduction of the

two ships will allow the equivalent of 70,000

trucks to be diverted every year from the busy

motorway network onto the seas.

The launching ceremony of the Cruise Barcelona

was attended by the entire top management

of the Group, including co-managing directors

Gianluca Grimaldi, Emanuele Grimaldi and Diego

Pacella as well as by Giuseppe Bono, the

chief executive officer of Fincantieri, the leading

shipbuilding yard in Europe.

Last October a selection of the Grimaldi

Group’s clients, together with all of the

Group’s European and Mediterranean

representatives gathered in the Hotel Grande

Bretagne of Athens for the 11 th Grimaldi Euro-

Med Convention “From Land to Sea” (see previous

issue of Grimaldi news). The main point

for discussion during the conference was the

need for modern port infrastructure to enable

the development of European Short Sea Shipping

needs. The focus centred upon ports as

the most important tool for the development

of short sea shipping.

Under the moderation of Alfons Guinier, the

Secretary General of the European Community

Shipowners’ Associations, the distinguished

speakers debated the subject, agreeing that

liberalisation of port practices must be the focus

of any development at European level.

Another important topic of the conference

was the host country itself. Greece is one of

the most important markets for the Grimaldi

Group. Already at the centre of the development

of both the Aegean and the Adriatic Service,

Greece will indeed be one of the most

important short sea markets for Grimaldi as

evidenced by the recently established large

share holding partnership with Minoan Lines

(see page 2).

As far as service developments are concerned

– the Group co-managing director Emanuele

Grimaldi announced that the Group is planning

a new Ro/Ro line connecting the Sicilian

port of Catania to Igoumenitsa and Patras. Mr.

Grimaldi stated that he believed that there is

a substantial amount of trade between Sicily

and Greece that can benefit from such a new

service.

After Mr. Grimaldi had closed the conference

the guests took time to network (as

pictured) and discuss the topics in a more

informal way.

More than 230 million euros to support trucking companies and

logistics operators that shift their trucks and trailers from the roads

onto the Motorways of the Sea Network in the Mediterranean

Italy’s Ecobonus

is finally a reality

The Italian government has eventually

enforced the so called Ecobonus,

a three-year subsidy programme

for those trucking companies

that will chose the Motorways of the

Sea network as opposed to continue to

make use of the overcongested road

network. It is possible to claim the Ecobonus

for all the Mediterranean short

sea routes leaving from Italian ports. Financial

resources are granted by the

2008 Italian Financial Bill to the total of

77 million euros per year for 2007, 2008

and 2009.

Companies benefiting from the Ecobonus

are those trucking companies or

associations of companies making use

of vessels to ship their trucks, trailers

or car transporters on specific routes

and which have made at least 80 trips

on any route in a year, and that present

a strategic plan aiming to pursue this

target. The Ecobonus will be paid for

up to 30% of the cost of sea transport.

Application forms must be presented to

the Italian Ministry of Transport within

31 st January of the following year to the

one in which transports have been performed

and for which contributions are

requested. Jointly with the application

forms, the bills of lading issued by shipping

companies need to be presented,

or alternatively a certification from

shipping companies stating the voyages

made on the vessels on the specific

routes, and the relative invoices

issued by shipping companies.

In this last case, application forms must

be presented within the 31 st January,

jointly with the certification about voyages

issued by shipping companies, as

well as the receipted invoices already

available. For the presentation of the

remaining invoices issued by shipping

companies, referring to the voyages

made during the last months of

the previous year (in case of payment

deferment) the deadline is April 30.

The contribution is expected to be paid

directly to the trucking company within

the month of May.

The Italian Ministry of Transport

checks that trucking companies benefiting

from the contribution will continue

to use vessels/routes also during a

period of 3 years starting from the day

that contribution has been paid. Those

who will not continue to use vessels/

routes, will be obliged to pay back the

subsidies received up to that time.

Maiden Call

A ceremony

marks

the entrance

on service

of the PCTC

Grande Colonia

in Antwerp

Following her delivery last Autumn,

a ceremony took place

onboard the pure car truck

carrier (PCTC) Grande Colonia during

her maiden call in the Port of Antwerp.

During the ceremony the flag of the

city of Koeln was offered to the master

of the vessel. The Grande Colonia is

in fact named after the city of Koeln, a

town which has longstanding commercial

relations with the Grimaldi Group,

being the location of the European

headquarters of Ford Motor Co, one of

the Group’s major customers.

Guests included among others Mr. Marc

Van Peel, President of the Antwerp Port

Authority and Hans-Bert Bong, Manager

European Vehicle Logistics of Ford

Werke who were welcomed onboard

by the Group’s co-managing director

Emanuele Grimaldi.

With a length of 176 metres, a beam of

31.10 metres and a speed of 20 knots,

the 38,650 gt Grande Colonia is able to

transport up to 4,300 cars. Along with

seven sisterships she is deployed on

the Group’s twice weekly Euro-Aegean

Service linking North Europe to Portugal,

Greece, Italy, Turkey and Spain.

The additional benefit of this type of

vessel is its loading flexibility which

allows the transport of rolling cargo of

any length and weight. Equipped with

11 decks, (3 of which are hoistable up

to about 5 metres in height), the Grande

Colonia can load trucks, tractors, twindeck

tourist busses, train wagons and

excavators.

The Grande Colonia is part of the

Group’s extensive newbuilding programme

with 32 units ordered and

scheduled for delivery in the period

2007-2011. These new vessels will contribute

to the strengthening and expansion

of its short sea and deep sea liner

services.

Grimaldi’s undisputed leadership on the direct routes linking South

America to West Africa is being further strengthened as the new

Africa Express Service is launched. The service will have two Ro/

Ro vessels deployed on the route connecting Brazil, Angola and Nigeria. Port

rotation is Santos, Paranagua, Lagos, Luanda, Santos. The service frequency

is every 14 days, with only 11 days of sailing between the Brazilian port of

Paranagua and Luanda.

The Africa Express is a development of the one-ship service operating since

last year with the Ro/Ro vessel Fast Arrow. As from the end of February a

second, larger and faster ship will be deployed on the line: the Carmania

Express, whose speed is 18 knots with an intake capacity of 2,500 linear metres

of cargo.

The new service interconnects in Lagos with the powerful

Grimaldi Line services connecting Northern Europe to West

Africa. The Africa Express service has been conceived to serve

the growing request from shippers in both continents and in order

to satisfy the increased demand for project cargo shipments,

in particular for the oil industries of Angola and Nigeria.

The Angolan port of Lobito is expected to be served in the near

future by this new service.

The commercial success of the

South America line is one of the

cornerstones of the Group. On

both its South America and West Africa

networks, Grimaldi has always

anticipated the market needs in order

to satisfy all of its costumer’s requirements.

This is once again the case as

the South America service is being

upgraded on its northbound route

with an impressive increase in the

tonnage deployed. Since the beginning

of February, in addition to the

six large Ro/Ro-container ships regularly

serving the line, a seventh Ro/

Ro vessel has been added to support

the northbound trade. Now two more

vessels have been deployed in order

to guarantee that all rolling cargo from

South American ports can be shipped

promptly. This development takes the

overall number of ships deployed to

nine and increases the number of departures

per month from South America

to five, with an impressive six-day

frequency.

The addition of these extra vessels will

result in a substantial improvement

of the South America/West Africa

service, as all nine ships call Dakar

(Senegal) where cargo can also be

transhipped onto all vessels serving

the West African coast.

Supplier Council. Representing

the Group on the Council will

be Costantino Baldissara, the Grimaldi

Naples Commercial and Logistics director.

The GM Global Logistics Supplier

Council is a forum aimed at generating

collaborative initiatives in a changing

environment that enables innovation

and best practices in the supply chain.

The GME Logistics Supplier Council

works for the benefit of all parties to accomplish

long-term mutual success.

ACL moves to Unikai

Hamburg becomes

the Group’s German hub

Since the beginning of the year, Atlantic Container Line has

moved its German port of call to Hamburg and its ships now

berth at the Unikai Terminal. The move is in line with the

Group’s strategy to consolidate volumes and increase the level of services

and connections at its hub ports such as Hamburg. In fact, in addition

to ACL’s North Europe/North America service Unikai is also called

by all the Grimaldi ships deployed on the North Europe/West Africa

and North Europe/South America routes, so cargo can be transhipped

from one line onto the other without leaving the terminal.

Hamburg is also home to Grimaldi Germany and an ACL national customer

service centre.

On January 5, the arrival at Unikai of the ACL Ro/Ro-Containership Atlantic

Concert also marked the celebration of the company’s 40 th anniversary,

ACL’s presence in Germany can be traced back to 1967. ACL’s

weekly transatlantic Ro/Ro-Container service calls Hamburg every

Friday. The Grimaldi Group owns 49% of the Unikai terminal.

The Nordic Travel Fair Matka and Caravan 2008 fairs at the Helsinki Fair Centre

saw a robust presence of Finnlines, the Group’s Finnish subsidiary, which

is the major player in Baltic Ro/Ro and Passenger trades.

With many years of experience in ferry traffic and modern ro/pax

ships, Finnlines offers a warm atmosphere for a quiet and pleasant

trip across the Baltic Sea. The company operates modern and

technologically advanced ships on four routes: Helsinki (Finland)

- Travemünde (Germany), Naantali (Finland) - Kapellskär (Sweden),

Malmö (Sweden) - Travemünde (Germany) and Lübeck (Germany)

- St. Petersburg (Russia).

All in all, Finnlines operates or manages 45 vessels. The 15 ro-pax vessels

in the fleet are designed to carry both freight and passengers.

Nordic Travel Fair Matka and Caravan 2008 fair at the Helsinki

Fair Centre on 17-20 January 2008 are the most important fairs in

the Baltic and North regions and this year they attracted nearly

85,000 visitors.

Aircraft fuselage

on the Motorways

of the Sea

The commercial success of ATR, the aircraft consortium between

Italy’s Alenia and Eads of France is providing a number of special

pieces of cargo for vessels operating on Grimaldi’s growing network

of motorways of the seas linking Italy and Spain. In fact, fuselages

of ATR 72 and ATR 42 aircraft that are built in Italy make use of the

daily ferry link between Civitavecchia and Barcelona on their way to

the factory in Toulouse (South Western France), where the aircraft is

assembled. In the picture, the shipment of the fuselage of an ATR

72 whose dimensions are 27 metres in length, 3.5 metres in width

and 24 metric tonnes in weight is shown.

Safety and Operational

Training on Ferries

Grimaldi is actively co-operating with Videotel of the UK who are

producing a new package of training operations and safety precautions

to be implemented on ferries. The International Maritime Organisation

(IMO) is a partner in this project. Grimaldi’s safety dept. staff

are part of the steering group in charge of developing the programme

which will cover general safety on vehicle decks, multi-level access

ramps and loading/discharging. In particular, it will detail operations

on car decks, such as dealing with access problems; the handling of

dangerous goods (building on the latest IMDG code legislation); and

the ramp door and internal ramp/deck operations. It will also cover the

complexities of internal and external moveable sections.

In addition the programme will look at ship evacuation, including

searching for passengers, and specific fire fighting techniques for Ro/

Ro vessels, as well as the latest Marine Evacuation System (MES) developments

on board Ro/pax ferries. A video produced by Videotel

to support the programme will be recorded onboard a Grimaldi Lines

vessel (pictured).

Grimaldi and ACL

Support Education

As part of the Grimaldi Group policy to support

training and preparation of young prospective

ship officers, ACL is participating in a training programme

in Sweden that encompasses the use of

ACL ships for onboard classes.

The initiative is in conjunction with Transatlantic AB,

(ACL’s ship management company), the Swedish

Ship-Owners Association, SARF and Chalmers

University in Gothenburg.

Onboard classes are used towards semester credits

for lectures and practical onboard training during

a round trip from Europe to North America.

The first group of students, under supervision of

a Chalmers instructor, are studying nautical, engineering

and navigational subjects. They observed

and participated in the ship’s activities to learn firsthand

what daily life on the open sea entails.

The first class comprised of 10 students, but ACL

can accommodate a class of up to 16. The second

group hit the high seas in February.
