Firm Hand,
Smooth Sailing
Despite the difficult general economic environment, throughout
the first half of the year the Group has continued to perform at a
very satisfactory level either in terms of volumes, cash generation
and bottom line. The joint effect of the newly launched ro-ro services for
both passengers and freight and of the continuous fine tuning of the existing
services to better meet the market demand, have in fact produced
a growth for both the Motorways of the Sea Network in the Mediterranean
and the whole deep-sea Atlantic Network connecting North Europe
with North America, West Africa and South America. At the same time,
the diversification towards other types of rolling cargo has helped the
EuroMed service to positively balance the slump in the volume of new
cars transported linked to the effect of the world economic crisis. All of
this, with the addition of a strong commercial drive based on the higher
quality standards of the services offered to customers, has produced
strong mid-year results. Not surprisingly then, the Group’s balance sheet
strength has allowed to continue to invest in the core business. The entire
Swedish port of Wallhamn was taken over in June and the existing strong
newbuilding programme has been confirmed in full.
While the rest of the Group has just done fine even during the worst
crisis in living memory, Finnlines was not able to anticipate the arrival of
the upturn which was particularly severe in the Baltic. The issue has been
promptly addressed through a management shake-up that saw the direct
intervention in Helsinki of a corporate top management team headed by
the Group’s joint managing director, Emanuele Grimaldi. This led to the
birth of a ‘new’ Finnlines, less self referential, more business oriented and
integrated with the rest of the Group. Most of the Finnlines’ network was
re-designed during the Spring with the aim of creating value by deploying
the right ships on the most suitable routes. At the same time a plan to
exploit all the possible synergies is being rolled out. The first visible result
is the BalticEuroMed Service which connects the Mediterranean and
North European markets to Finland and Russia.
A state-of-the-art fleet, overall reliability, top quality standards of services,
financial solidity and full dedication of staff are key elements when it
comes to choosing a business partner, particularly in tough times as the
current ones. This is all what our Group guarantees.
Starting with this issue, the Grimaldi News will be circulated not only
as an insert of Lloyd’s List, the bible of the shipping world, but also of
Deutsche Verkerhs-Zeitung (DVZ), the leading German logistics publication.
This new partnership results in the total circulation of Grimaldi News
increasing to 38,000 copies while allowing to get closer to the largest European
nation and the Continent’s industrial locomotive. A warm welcome
therefore goes to all the DVZ readers, with the auspicious that they will
find these pages of their interest.

Grimaldi Lines’ Motorways of
the Sea (MoS) in the Mediterranean
are proving to be
stronger than the financial and economic
crisis. In the first six months of
2009, the Motorways of the Sea network
recorded an 11% growth in terms of rolling
units transported and a 15% growth
in terms of passengers. The growth in
volumes has been positively reflected in
both revenues and bottom line too.
The success of Grimaldi Lines’ MoS
Network between mainland Italy, Sicily,
Sardinia, Spain, Tunisia, Malta, Libya
and Greece is mainly a result of the continuous
development of the fleet and of
the network of services offered in order
to obtain the real time adjustments in
line with market demand. This makes
it possible to maintain satisfactory rates
for the cargo. The fleet deployed by the
Group in the MoS network numbers 12
ro-ro, ro-pax and cruise ferry vessels.
In particular the commissioning of the
Cruise Roma and Cruise Barcelona, the
two largest cruise ferries in the Mediterranean
has had the most positive impact
on the 2009 results. In fact, through the
economies of scale, the two vessels allow
competitive pricing for both freight
and passengers without reducing profitability.
MINOAN LINES - This impact of
economies of scale is the reason why the
Group is very positive on the prospects
of Minoan Lines which, next October, is
to take delivery of the Cruise Europa, a
sistership to Cruise Roma and Cruise
Barcelona, which is similar in terms of
dimensions but is capable of carrying
even more passengers. The new vessel
will be deployed on the Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras
route where she will be
followed by a sistership in 2010.
Meanwhile, in the first quarter of 2009
Minoan Lines has achieved positive results
when compared with 2008 (before
the crisis hit hard). In fact, due to the
seasonality of the traffic the first quarter
is always negative for the company,
which recorded a net result of -4 million
euros compared to -7.8 million euros in
the same period of 2008. In terms of
market share, Minoan gained ground on
the Northern Adriatic routes on which it
achieved a 37.3% share of trucks, 34.7%
of passengers and 34.2% of cars. On the
domestic market (Piraeus-Heraklion)
Minoan did even better, recording a
48% market share for trucks, 68.8% for
passengers and 63.2% for cars.

North Sea / Baltic
Port of Wallhamn
is fully owned
Grimaldi completed the purchase of the remaining 50% in the Swedish port serving
the West of Sweden as well as South Eastern Norway
In June this year the Group completed
the take over of the port of Wallhamn,
the only private port in Sweden. The
operation is part of a strategy aimed at
continuously strengthening Grimaldi’s
maritime-related activities and involved
the purchasing of 50% of the shares of
Wallhamn Holding AB, the company that
owns the port, from Eukor Car Carriers
Inc. As a part of the deal, Eukor Car Carriers
Inc. entered into a long-term agreement
committing to use the port of Wallhamn
for its services.
A multi-client port, Wallhamn lies on the
Tjörn island and it is strategically located
as it serves both import and export
trades the whole Western part of Sweden
as well as the South Eastern part of Norway.
It features a 712-metre long berth
while the terminal area and warehouses
total 500,000 square metres.
The Grimaldi Group and Eukor had
jointly purchased the port in 2005 from
the Municipality of Wallhamn, since then
some 120 direct jobs have been created
while investments worth millions of euros
have been completed. The port of
Wallhamn is mostly used for the import/
export of new cars and industrial vehicles
as well as ro-ro and project cargo.
The 2008 throughput at the port was
125,000 cars, 8,500 ro-ro units, 6,000
containers.
The terminal includes a Pre-Delivery-
Inspection Centre for vehicles as well
as body shop works for commercial
vehicles where tailor-made alteration
services can be provided according to
customer requirements.
Commenting on the takeover, Mr Emanuele
Grimaldi, the Group’s joint-managing
director said: “Developing a range of
first class, owned ports and port terminals
is part of the Group’s strategy aimed
at delivering to our customers the highest
standard of services. We are proud
of what Wallhamn has become since we
bought the original 50% stake in it. The
increase of the Group’s interest to 100%
will have a positive impact in terms of
operating results and profits generated.
Wallhamn is a good example of how private
ownership of a port can generate
employment and wealth for the region
surrounding it”.
The port of Wallhamn is called by the
Grimaldi Lines’ weekly EuroMed Service
to the Mediterranean as well as by
Finnlines’ Scandinavian service. Wallhamn
is the hub port for the BalticEuroMed
Service – the union of EuroMed
and Scandinavian services - jointly
operated by Finnlines and Grimaldi
Lines. This latter service offers a unique
weekly ro-ro connection between Russia,
Finland, Northern Europe and all of the
Mediterranean destinations in the Group
range for the transport of cars, any kind
of rolling units as well as containerised
and project cargo.
Finnlines
in Motorways
of the Sea push
A new logo, new
services and a new CEO
During the first half of the year Finnlines
has revised all its services,
launching new connections for both ro-ro
freight and passengers. At the same time,
the company logo has been modified to
reflect being part of the Grimaldi Group.
The main new services are those connecting
the German port of Travemünde
to Gdynia (Poland); Helsinki (Finland)
and Malmö (Sweden) respectively, while
Gdynia has also been linked three times
a week to Helsinki.
At the same time, the TransRussiaExpress
line from Lübeck to St. Petersburg
has been upgraded to two sailings per
week based on a number of different
loops: Lübeck-Sassnitz-St.Petersburg
and Lübeck-Helsinki-St.Petersburg.
This latter service allows the collection of
cargo in Helsinki, for shipment to Russia
for cargo from the entire range of ports
served by the Grimaldi Group.
Last but most important, Finnlines has
launched a weekly BalticEuroMed Service,
created by connecting its Scandinavian
Service to Grimaldi Lines’ EuroMed
service. In this case, the hub port is Wallhamn,
in Sweden.
The most recent development at the
Helsinki-based operator is the appointment
of Uwe Bakosch as President and

CEO. Mr Bakosch took office at the end of
June. “Our target is to organise the company
in order to be profitable even if the crisis
continues and volumes remain at the current
levels while supplying the highest service
standard to customers” he said.
Here are the main new ro-pax services of
Finnlines:
Travemünde-Helsinki (10 x week)
This Baltic backbone now features 10 departures
per week in each direction. The line
is operated by the five Star Class vessels,
the largest ro-pax ice class ferries. Capable
of loading 4,200 lane metres of trailers and
trucks and up to 500 passengers in 200
cabins. Seven of the ten departures have
a 27-hour sailing time with the other three
having a 36-hour sailing time due to the call
in Gdynia (Poland).
Travemünde-Gdynia (3 x week) &
Gdynia-Helsinki (3 x week)
The first motorway of the sea for passengers
and freight between Germany and Poland
was launched on 2 June and since the very
beginning has attracted good cargo flows
thanks to the important Finnlines Eurobonus
offer under which any trailer or truck
pays only 250 euros for the 15-hour trip, with
cabin and meal for drivers included. This
environmentally friendly service is in line
with the European Commission’s goal of
reducing the congestion on the European
road networks and reducing the external
costs for the companies that are related to
transport activities. In their first month of
operation the Travemünde-Gdynia and the
Gdynia-Helsinki (3 x week, 19-hour sailing)
services have attracted 12,000 passengers
and transported more than 3,000 commercial
vehicles and cars in addition to the
existing volumes of trailers on the Gdynia-
Helsinki route. Both the services as well as
the Travemünde-Helsinki direct service are
operated by the Star Class vessels
Travemünde – Malmö (3 x day)
Finnlines has also extended its passenger
concept to the 9-hour link between Germany
and South Sweden. In addition to a substantial
ro-ro capacity, the three ro-pax ships
deployed on this route – the m/v Finneagle,
Finntrader and Finnpartner – are fitted with
190 cabins each. This service features three
departures per day.

German Industry

ACL secures the link to Canada and the US

as the North European terminal
of many of the Group’s ro-ro services,
over the last year the Grimaldi Group
has substantially improved the way it
serves German importers and exporters
of rolling, containerised and project
cargo bound to the Mediterranean,
West Africa, South America as well
as North America. The extensive set
of shipping services are provided by
both Grimaldi Lines and Atlantic Container
Lines, two of the main brands
of the Group. They rely on the strong
agency support provided by the subsidiaries
Grimaldi Germany and ACL
Deutschland, both located in a modern
building in the newly developed area
of the port, where an aggregated staff
of more than 80 people is wholly dedicated
at serving the German market.
Mediterranean (Weekly)
Since late 2008, Hamburg has become
the Northern European terminal port
for the weekly Euro-Aegean Service.
This is served by very large, specially
designed Pure Car Truck Carrier
(PCTC) vessels able to take onboard
any kind of rolling units, even pieces
of project and special cargo having
up to a 100-tonne weight. Departing
from Hamburg on Mondays, the Euro-
Aegean Service connects the German
industry to the extensive Mediterranean
network served by the Group, including
direct-call destinations such as
Piraeus (Greece), Alexandria (Egypt),
Lattakia and Tartous (Syria), Beirut and
Tripoli (Lebanon), Gemlik and Yeniköy
(Turkey) and other destinations served
via transhipment, such as Libya. “We
really serve the whole of the Med area
– stressed Hans-Jürgen Sell, managing
director of Grimaldi Germany -, and
carry any kind of cargo: break bulk,
high volume cargo safely packed on
mafi trailers, machinery as well as
second hand cars offering unmatched
frequency and range of ports served
as. Grimaldi services are reliable, safe
and make use of the most modern ro-ro
tonnage”.

West Africa (up to 3 x week)
With up to three departures per week,
Grimaldi offers German importers
and exporters the most solid, reliable,
efficient and especially direct
connection to the entire range of
West African countries. The Group’s
unrivalled West African network is
served by a fleet of newly-built, large,
flexible and technologically advanced
multipurpose ro-ro vessels of
the ‘Grande’ class able to carry up to
800 containers on the weather deck.
Fitted with two 40-ton cranes, these
ships can also take on board any kind
of special or project cargo having a
weight or up to 250 tonnes apiece.
Transit time from Hamburg ranges
between 10 and 33 days depending
on the destination. For example, ports
such Lagos and Tema are served in
18-20 days.
South America (every 9 days)
Trades to and from Brazil, Argentina
and Uruguay are served every
9 days. In fact, Hamburg is also the
Northern European terminal for the
South American service. One again
this is served by the flexible and
modern multipurpose ro-ro car carriers
part of the ‘Grande’ Class, pictured
on the previous page together
with an ACL ship while calling at the
Unikai terminal.
ACL (US and Canada, weekly)
With departures every Friday and a
12–day transit time, ACL’s service is
the strongest and most reliable link
between Germany and North America.
Served by five ro-ro/container
ships, the world largest, Hamburg,
is also the hub for North American
cargo bound to the Mediterranean. In
fact, in order to make transhipment
operations as smooth as possible,
since early 2008, ACL’s weekly transatlantic
service calls Unikai, the same
terminal where all of the Grimaldi
Lines services call. Unikai is 49%
owned by the Group.
Grande Benin
upgrades
West African trades
Southern Express service frequency is
to be improved to minimum every 10
days as the newest multipurpose ro-ro
enters service in September
The newest multipurpose ro-ro vessel in the
fleet, the Grande Benin, is set to be deployed
in September on the Southern Express Service,
one of the four regular lines offered by the
Group between North Europe and West Africa.
The commissioning of this vessel will result in a
50% improvement of the frequency of the direct
connection between Amsterdam, Hamburg, Tilbury,
Antwerp, Le Havre, Lisbon, Dakar, Pointe
Noire, Luanda and Douala with a minimum one
sailing every ten days.

of Benin. Both are pictured here with Mr Gianluca Grimaldi, the Group’s
joint-managing director, during the launching ceremony, which took place on 25
April at the Uljanik shipyard of Pula, in Croatia.
The deployment of the Grande Benin on the Southern Express Service represents
further evidence of Grimaldi Lines’ increased commitment to serve the West African
trades following the introduction on the same route of the Grande Ghana (pictured)
earlier this year. In order to offer the best possible service levels to shippers,
the vessels deployed on the West Africa Southern Express Service also support
the Lisbon Express service sailings to Angola when cargo volumes require it.

Portugal to Angola trade
developments
The Group has made an important step forward to maintaining its leadership
in ensuring a complete coverage of the important Portugal to Angola trade.
Following the success of the Lisbon Express service between Lisbon and Luanda,
Grimaldi Lines has introduced a further con/ro vessel, the Eurocargo
Salerno, dedicated to direct calls in Leixoes and Luanda. Ideal intake of the Eurocargo
Salerno is 500 TEUs, 1.000 linear metres of rolling cargo and 500 cars.
Grimaldi Lines has decided to invest in a direct link from Leixoes in order to satisfy
the increasing demand from producers and shippers of any cargo with destination
the Angolan market. Deployment of the m/v Eurocargo Salerno out of Leixoes is
further supported by sailings of both ships serving the Lisbon Express and the
North Europe/West Africa Southern Express service as demand and needs of customers
dictate.
In line with her sisterships, the Grande
Benin is designed to offer the maximum
flexibility in terms of intake capacity and
type of cargo loaded. The height of its
main decks allows the loading of heavy
and out of gauge rolling equipment such
as trucks, tractors, double-deck buses
and big earthmoving equipment. The
Grande Benin has an ideal intake of
2,000 linear metres of ro-ro cargo plus
2,000 cars or vans and 800 TEUs of containers
while her sophisticated system
of internal ramps, fixed and hoistable,
optimizes the cargo mix. Her quarter
stern ramp allows the loading of cargo
units with a weight of up to 250 tonnes
apiece. Each of her two cranes on the
weather deck are able to lift units (containers
and general cargo) with a weight
of up to 40 tonnes.
All in all the Grande Benin is the 14 th
vessel delivered to the Grimaldi Group
by the Uljanik shipyard over the last
six years. The first 11 were Pure Car
Truck Carriers and the last three were
multipurpose ro-ro vessels. Four more
multipurpose ro-ro vessels are slated
for delivery by Uljianik in 2010 and 2011.
South America Africa Express
Service capacity up 80%
The direct service between Santos and Paranagua (Brazil), Lagos (Nigeria) and
Luanda (Angola) has been substantially upgraded with the deployment in July
of the multipurpose ro-ro car carrier sisterships Fides and Spes which joined the
m/v Carmania Express.
This three-sailings-a-month service is therefore now operating with 100% owned
fleet which allows for even greater quality control and performance. Deployment
of the new vessels represents a significant upgrade in capacity compared to the
previous service configuration.
The monthly capacity of the South America Africa Express service has been increased
by 80% in containers and 10% in high and heavy rolling units, giving a total
of 1,200 TEUs plus 3,400 lane metres of rolling or general cargo. Additionally, these
new vessels have dedicated car/van decks allowing a more efficient loading of this
type of vehicle. This particular benefit commenced with the first call of the m/v Fides
which loaded 100 Mitsubishi pick-ups bound to Luanda.
Casablanca call for
North Europe/South America Service
As from 23 July, Casablanca has been re-introduced as a southbound port
of call for the vessel deployed on the North Europe/South America and
North Europe/West Africa Northern Express Service. The move results from
the improved berth availability for the multipurpose “Grande class” vessels
at the Moroccan port. The service operates on a ten-day frequency connecting
South American ports as well as Hamburg, Tilbury, Antwerp, Le Havre and
Bilbao directly with Morocco. Connections may also be made from US ports
served by ACL via transhipment to Grimaldi Lines’ vessels in North Europe.
A key service feature is the prompt and reliable transit from Casablanca to all West
African and South American ports in the Grimaldi Group’s range, either directly or
via the dedicated Dakar hub. Moroccan exports to the US East Coast may also be
routed via Dakar onto the fortnightly direct service.

the Ford Transit Connect which
is made at the Ford Otosan factory.
The Prime Minister of Turkey,
Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan drove
the first Ford Transit Connect to
be exported to the USA up to the
ramp of the Pure Car Truck Carrier
Grand Benelux, which is deployed
on the EuroAegean Service. Then,
Mr Erdogan handed over the car
to the master of the ship, Captain
Grimaldi is 2008 GM
Supplier of the Year
The Group awarded for the 8 th time in 9 years
Di Gennaro, who drove the car onboard.
The ceremony was also attended,
among others, by Mr Mustafa
Koç, Chairman of Koç Holding,
Mr Zafer Çaglayan, the Minister of
State for Industry and by Mr Cengiz
Kabatepe, Ford Otosan MP&L Assistant
General Manager.
At the 17 th annual awards ceremony
presented on 5 June at
the GM Heritage Center in Warren
(Michigan), the Grimaldi Group was
recognized by General Motors as a 2008
Supplier of the Year for its significant contribution
to GM’s global product and performance
achievements. “General Motors
is proud to honor the Grimaldi Group
with the Supplier of the Year award, an
award that we believe is the most meaningful
honor in the supplier industry”,
said Bo Andersson, GM group vice
president, global purchasing and supply
chain. “During these difficult economic
times, it’s more important than ever to
recognize performance in our supply
base. These suppliers are the best of the
best and we want to honor them for their
tremendous performance”.
“We are extremely honored to receive
this prestigious award from General Motors.
It is the eighth time in the last nine
years and it is the result of our Group’s
hard work and full commitment in meeting
General Motors’ requirements” said

di Navigazione receives
the Campania Awards
On 6 July, Grimaldi Compagnia di Navigazione S.p.A., the Group’s parent
company received the Campania Award as the entity which created most
value in 2008 in the Campania Region. The award ceremony was held during
a charity dinner in favour of the victims of the earthquake in L’Aquila, Italy. The
award was received by Guido Grimaldi (on the left), son of Emanuele Grimaldi and
commercial manager of the Short Sea shipping Department in Naples, and by his
cousin Guido Grimaldi (on the right), son of Gianluca Grimaldi.

Notable Shipments
by ACL
• Two double-decker
buses were transported
from Liverpool, England
to Halifax aboard
the Atlantic Compass.
Each bus weighed 17
tonnes and measured
12.80 long x 2.55 wide x
4.27 high metres. Final
receiver was Ontario’s
interregional public transit system, linking Toronto with
the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
• A special exhibition truck sailed from Hamburg to Baltimore
onboard one of ACL’s ro-ro/containerships to tour
the East Coast of the US. The Rolling Reinhausen is 80
square metres of space aimed at demonstrating the technologies
of the power transformer components.
• A 40-metre boat mast lashed and secured onto a specially
designed trailer sailed from Baltimore to Liverpool.
• A satellite stacker was transported from Baltimore to
Hamburg. Upon arrival in Germany, the 30-metre long
transport-ready portable bulk material handling conveyor
was quickly processed and driven to Estonia for delivery
at a local mining facility.
ACL making Hollywood
appearance
Atlantic Container Line was called to the Director’s Chair when it recently
phased out and sold a series of its ACLU 40’ dry-van containers.
In Albany (NY), one retired container is on the set as a movie prop
for Columbia Pictures political thriller, “Salt”, starring Angelina Jolie. While,
the ACLU series are Indian red, this prop was painted blue for set design
purposes. In an effort to continuously improve its equipment fleet, ACL
containers are phased out after ten years of service.

The Group Commercial and Logistics
Sirector, Costantino Baldissara
has been elected president of
ECG, the Association of European
Finished Vehicle Logistics, for the
next two years. Established in 1997
in Brussels, ECG represents more
than 2/3rds of the European Finished
Vehicles Logistics industry.
ECG Members operate in the field of
outbound logistics for the Automotive
sector, including quality control
at the end of the assembly line, storage in special compounds,
transport in all modalities – rail, road and sea – de-waxing Pre-
Delivery Inspections (PDI), customising, workshop activities and
the refurbishing of former fleet vehicles ECG has 90 members
from 24 countries, which last year recorded an aggregated turnover
in excess of 15 billion euros while generating an indirect
turnover of around 40 billion euros. Members handle about 40
million cars per year with over 64,000 direct employees and up
to 162,000 indirect people involved operating 20,000 trucks,
20,000 rail wagons, about 337 ships; 42 river barges; 462 compounds;
146 port terminals; more than 58 million square metres
of car parks; about one million square metres of workshops.
