Downtown Greenville 

Downtown Revitalization Story 

Downtown Greenville reflects a concerted revitalization 

effort 30 years in the making. As the growth of the suburbs 

began attracting businesses from downtown in the 1960s 

and 1970s, the central business district languished as a 

result. To reinvigorate downtown, the City of Greenville 

crafted strategic plans to reshape Main Street into a 

pedestrian-friendly place. The City began working toward 

this goal by narrowing Main Street from four to two lanes 

and adding street trees, wide sidewalks and comfortable 

places for people to sit at mid-block crossings. Plans also 

called for new anchor projects like the Hyatt Regency 

Hotel/Greenville Commons project in 1982, the Peace 

Center for the Performing Arts in 1991 and the West End 

Market in 1995. Today, downtown is vibrant with innovative 

mixed-use developments and destinations such as 

Poinsett Plaza, Falls Park, RiverPlace, Fluor Field and the 

Field House that provide spaces where people can live, 

work and play all in the same area. There are certainly 

lots of great places to explore in downtown Greenville!

Art in Public Places Self-Guided Tours

Greenville’s public art program. Take a walking or scenic 

driving tour through the city and discover a diverse collection 

of artwork. The City’s Art in Public Places reference 

guide provides a great resource for discovering the 

unique artwork that has complemented the city’s continued 

growth. Each tour provides scenic maps of the city, 

photographs of the artwork and detailed descriptions with 

historical information. 

Mice on Main 

Try to find these nine bronze mice, which are located 

along a seven-block stretch of Main Street between the 

Hyatt Regency Hotel and The Greenville News building. 

The children’s book Goodnight Moon was the inspiration 

for Mice on Main. 

For his senior project, Jimmy Ryan, a student at Christ 

Church Episcopal School, proposed the idea of placing 

these mice downtown with clues for a fun-filled scavenger 

hunt. He raised the funds and commissioned Zan Wells, 

a local sculptor, to make the individual mice.

City Center 

Discover the heart of downtown by visiting the City Center, 

complete with eating and shopping destinations for 

everyone. Stroll underneath the lush tree canopy while 

you enjoy the public art along the sidewalks, or relax 

awhile on a downtown bench with an ice cream cone… 

the opportunities are endless! Main Street’s significant 

urban transformation changed downtown’s image, bringing 

life back to an important Greenville location which 

ultimately set the stage for a Great American Main Street 

Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 

2003 and a Great Street in America designation from the 

American Planning Association in 2009. Unique attractions 

in this area include Hyatt Plaza, Piazza Bergamo and 

historic Court Square. 

The Village of West Greenville 

By car from downtown, travel 

on S. Main St. and turn 

right onto Pendleton St. 

Stay on Pendleton St. and 

cross Academy St. into the 

Village of West Greenville. 

Further down Pendleton St. 

(at Lois Ave. and Traction 

St.) is the Pendleton Street 

Arts District. This area is 

home to 30-plus artisans 

in a variety of art galleries 

and studios. The area hosts a Saturday Art Market 

on the first Saturday of each month during the summer, 

located in the parking lot across from 1278 Pendleton St.

Friday of each month, the area also participates in a local 

gallery crawl appropriately called “First Fridays.” Many 

of the studios are open from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on 

these evenings. 

The West End Historic District 

Travel across the S. Main 

St. Bridge and you will

Parks and Outdoor Activities 

Liberty Bridge 

The $4.5 million Liberty Bridge does more than span 

the Reedy River—it serves as the focal point of Falls Park, 

showcasing man’s creativity alongside nature’s beauty. 

The bridge opened in 2004 and measures 12 feet wide, 

has a horizontal curve radius of 214 feet and 90 foot 

towers weighing 26 tons each. 

The bridge’s unique design, created by architect Miguel 

Rosales of Boston, provides spectacular views of the 

Reedy River Falls. 

Falls Park 

A downtown visit would not be complete without a visit 

to Falls Park! Stop by to discover the centerpiece of the 

City’s RiverWalk park system and to view the spectacular 

river falls from the sweeping Liberty Bridge, a world-class 

pedestrian bridge that spans 355 feet across the falls. 

Designed by landscape architects Tom Keith of Greenville’s 

Arbor Engineering and Andrea Mains of Washington, D.C., 

Falls Park is a very special place. The $13 million project 

includes beautiful public gardens and two amphitheaters 

for gatherings and events. Visitors are also invited to stroll 

the scenic trails, enjoy seasonal flowers, attend outdoor 

performances and picnic along the river. A partnership 

between the City of Greenville and the Carolina Foothills 

Garden Club made the park possible in 2004. Numerous 

new businesses have 

opened as a result of the 

park and revitalization of 

the river area. 

The bridge's suspension towers lean downstream at a 

15-degree angle and are located on one side, providing 

an unobstructed view of the downtown waterfall – one of 

the greatest in the nation! Subtle lighting in the bridge's 

handrails and from underneath gives it a glowing effect. 

Visitors will truly feel as if they are floating over the park. 

Other Area Parks 

Cleveland Park 

Traveling east from Falls Park, you will 

find the City’s largest and most extensive 

recreation area, Cleveland Park. 

This popular park features tennis 

courts, jogging trails, exercise equipment 

and Greenville’s largest playground. 

It also serves as the home of 

the Greenville Zoo. If you head northwest from Falls Park, 

you will pass the Peace Center Amphitheatre. 

Linky Stone Park 

Near the Peace Center is Linky Stone 

Park where you will find a wonderful 

children’s garden filled with numerous 

interactive elements and fun 

things for children of all ages. There 

you will see unique statues and two 

of everyone’s favorite childhood characters! 

To get there from Main St., turn onto W. Broad St. 

and then make a left onto River St. Make the first right 

onto Reedy View Dr. and the garden will be on your right.

McPherson Park 

for tennis fans. 

On the northern edge of downtown 

is McPherson Park. Opened in 1884, 

it is the City’s oldest park and home 

of a log cabin craft store. Bring your 

own golf clubs and balls and play a 

round of putt-putt on our free course. 

The park also includes lighted courts 

Historic Springwood Cemetery 

Nearby is the Historic Springwood 

Cemetery, dating back to 1820, 

where you will find 25 acres of green 

space open for strolling and discovering 

the final resting place of many 

of Greenville’s founding fathers. 

Richland Cemetery 

Located near Stone Ave., Richland 

Cemetery is six acres with over 1,400 

documented grave sites. It has 

served as the final resting place for 

some of the most influential African- 

American citizens of Greenville. 

Friends of Richland Cemetery is a 

volunteer organization that raises funds and promotes the 

appreciation and preservation of the cemetery’s cultural, 

historic and natural resources. For more information, visit

The Swamp Rabbit Trail 

The City of Greenville is committed to 

the health and well-being of its citizens 

and in 2008, adopted a Trails & Greenways 

Master Plan, which developed a 

framework for an integrated system of 

pathways called the Swamp Rabbit Trail. 

The City's network of trails and greenways is designed to 

link residents to the outdoors, and to date, the City has 

completed nearly five miles of the Swamp Rabbit Trail. 

The City of Greenville’s portion of the trail starts at Willard 

St. at the western city limit line, runs through Falls 

Park and then connects to Cleveland Park in downtown. 

From there it continues to the intersection of Faris Rd. 

and Cleveland St. near Greenville Tech and ultimately will 

extend to the southern end of the city limit line. Greenville 

County is also working on a trails program, creating 

opportunities for the City of Greenville’s trails to connect 

with other trails in the region. 

The Greenville Zoo 

Visit the Greenville Zoo, located at 

150 Cleveland Park Dr., just a short 

distance from downtown in Greenville’s 

very own Cleveland Park. 

There you will find giraffes, orangutans, 

lions, monkeys, farm animals, 

colorful flamingos and more.

The Peace Center for the Performing Arts 


At the Peace Center, you
