6.3 Business Development Recommendation Time Frames<br />

6.3.1 Short Term: 2010-2011<br />

• Redevelop “The Huddle.” Possibilities for this project include a housing ombudsman office,<br />

job training/microenterprise center, or meeting facility.<br />

• Encourage mixed-use development along Arlington-Pendleton corridor. Consider the City’s<br />

redevelopment zoning classification for the district.<br />

• Develop a targeted retail recruitment program for grocery store use along Pendleton Street to<br />

serve the neighborhood.<br />

• Pursue grant funding for live/work units along Jenkins Street and Dunbar/Calhoun resulting<br />

in <strong>Sterling</strong> Village.<br />

• Develop a business plan for <strong>Sterling</strong> Village partnership program between groups such as<br />

churches, “angel” investors, and local entrepreneurs to foster small businesses.<br />

• Create a community garden and corner produce market in conjunction with neighborhood<br />

seniors and youth.<br />

6.3.2 Medium Term: 2012-2015<br />

• Implement the <strong>Sterling</strong> Village partnership with selected businesses along Jenkins Street.<br />

Possible ventures include an art market, farm/food market, housing rehabilitation/hardware<br />

store, or a pharmacy/wellness center.<br />

• Pursue higher education/training opportunities within <strong>Sterling</strong> possibly locating at the Huddle<br />

to provide job training, entrepreneurial coaching, and other resources for residents.<br />
