In their 2009 European election campaign, the Greens promised a solution to the triple 

economic, social and environmental crisis Europe was facing: a Green New Deal for 

Europe. 

European voters responded by making the Greens/EFA group a big winner of the 

election. As the European Parliament reduced in size from 785 to 736 members, the 

Greens/EFA Group was the only political group to grow: from 43 to 55 members. 

These 55 Members – 29 women and 26 men – come from diverse backgrounds. 

They include members of Green movements, representatives of stateless nations and 

independent members. 

During this fi ve-year term, Greens will also remain at the vanguard of efforts to 

promote respect for civil and human rights within and outside Europe, a responsible 

role for Europe on the world stage, as well as better democracy and accountability of 

the EU institutions.

From 2009-2014, it is the task of those elected members to tirelessly promote and vote 

for the measures that are necessary to deliver the Green New Deal. Action is required 

across the full scope of European policy and law-making to achieve an ambitious 

commitment to climate protection and a radical transformation of the economy to 

deliver millions of green jobs.

Foreword 

The Group’s Bureau 

The Group’s Bureau (or executive) is made up of nine Members. 

Unlike all the other groups in the European Parliament, the Greens/EFA have a 

co-presidency, i.e. two co-Presidents, and gender balance is always guaranteed.

Seven vice-Presidents including one treasurer are the other Bureau Members. 

The fi rst vice-presidency is held by the President of the European Free Alliance. 

The Secretary General, the Deputies Secretaries General and the Head of Press 

Offi ce are also members of the Bureau.

Foreword 

Greens/EFA Members 

The Greens/European Free Alliance is a European parliamentary group made up 

of Greens, representatives of stateless nations and disadvantaged minorities and

independent members . It is born in July 1999 from the will of two separate and 

progressive European political families - the Greens and the EFA - to co-operate in the 

European Parliament.

Foreword A SHORT HISTORY OF THE 

GREENS IN THE EUROPEAN 

PARLIAMENT 

In times of accelerating climate change, all parties rush to expose their green credentials, 

but it still needs the original to push forward the necessary radical measures to 

combat climate change and lay the foundations for sustainable development. Where 

others pay fashionable lip service, the Greens continue to propose concrete and 

ambitious 1984 actions.
