Area Code 385 coming to Granite
As most people are still getting
used to the idea of dialing 10-digits
in their everyday phone calls, Granite
School District has received notification
that all district and school phone
numbers will be switching to the new
385 area code starting June 15.
Patrons and employees will still be
able to dial the 801 area code through a
transition phase. A message will notify
them of the impending change. The
change is part of an area code overlay
instituted by the public utilities commission
to cope with an ever-increasing
demand for phone numbers along the
Wasatch front.
The prefix (646) and four-digit
extension for all district locations and
schools will remain the same. Switching
to the new area code will allow the
district to expand its base of numbers
utilizing the same prefix. Additional
information is available on the district
homepage at www.graniteschools.org.
Bennion students accept Rachel’s Challenge
On April 20, 1999,
Rachel Joy Scott was the first
person killed in the Columbine
High School tragedy.
Today her legacy is Rachel’s
Challenge, which has proven
to be a life-changing experience
for thousands of school
children throughout the
nation. Rachel was known
for her acts of kindness and
compassion. Her family
established a program that encourages
students to involve
themselves in such acts at
their schools. Bennion Junior
High School accepted Rachel’s challenge
with some phenomenal results.
On Thursday, May 21, students
produced evidence of how the entire
school climate has been affected by the
Emergency preparedness
No one, including members of the
superintendency, is immune to the fire,
earthquake and other emergency drills that are
conducted on a regular basis.
Students from Bennion Junior High drape
multi-color paper chains from a balcony
at Taylorsville City Hall. The chains represent
acts of kindness performed by students.
challenge. Each time an act of kindness
was observed or performed throughout
this school year, it was written on a
kindness link. The links made a paper
chain long enough to stretch from the
school at 6055 South 2700 West to the
Taylorsville City offices at 5330 South
2600 West. A group of students and the
paper chain were bused to the city offices
on May 21 where they unveiled the
chain, which had nearly 6,000 links.
“I think it showed students that
you can make a difference with just one
small act. It doesn’t have to be something
huge just to help,” said PTA President
Debbie Feldman, who organized
the event. “Anyone can perform an act
of kindness.”
Author shares secrets
with Valley students
Ann Edwards Cannon, the author
of A Loser’s Guide To Life and Love,
The Shadow Brothers, Amazing Gracie
and several other pieces of young adult
literature visited with honors English
students at Valley Junior High School
on Monday, April 20.
Students asked about the writing
process, her favorite books, getting
published and what inspires her to
write. Ms. Cannon read excerpts from
several of her books explaining that
“every author uses bits and pieces of
people you know.” She said that a great
story must be built around characters
that have a problem to handle, so she
took the students through a process
of creating their own characters from
scratch. She said when she finishes a
book “the character feels like a real person”
because she knows that person so
well.
Student gets national award
Alaska race inspires
Morningside readers
Students in Mary Frances
Rich’s reading class at Morningside
Elementary used the recent Iditarod
Dogsled race in Alaska as inspiration
to read. Mary challenged her class to
read a page for each mile covered in
the famous race. Individual students
adopted various dogsled teams and
followed their progress via the internet.
Students also conducted a little research
into the history of the Iditarod
race and race details.
MESA teams
eye national
competition
Teams of students from Cottonwood
High School and West Lake
Junior High School will represent
Utah in a MESA-sponsored national
engineering competition in Denver
June 25-28.
The Cottonwood team includes
Holly Green, Uyen Nguyen, Margarita
Arteaga and Emilio Camu. West
Lake’s team is Juan Giron, Diego
Ayala, Paola Perez and Erick Quinonez
.
The competition is designed to
develop and test students’ creativity
as well as their command of physics
and math principles. Cottonwood and
West Lake emerged as champions of
their respective state high school and
junior high competitions.
Students at Morningside Elementary
School have been working
all year to come up with creative ways
to keep car idling around their school
to a minimum. For Maddie Reichman,
her idea to reduce engine idling
by providing drivers with blankets to
keep warm instead of idling vehicles
for heat has resulted in a trip for two
to Washington, D.C., next month.
Maddie was recently surprised during
a school assembly by representatives
from the National Energy Foundation
who named her a winner in the
Igniting Creative Energy Challenge.
She will travel to the nation’s capitol to
receive her award.
Santa Claus lives!
Where?
In the heart of Salt Lake City,
Santa is alive and well – at Lumenas
Studios. The studio is producing a
full-length animated film, The Legend
of Santa Claus, and Eloise Carlston’s
fifth grade class and Arcadia Elementary
School Principal Terri Roylance
were treated to a tour. The artists at
Lumenas explained stop-motion and
3D computer-animation techniques.
The students especially enjoyed the
“motion-capture lounge” where an actor’s
movements are viewed digitally
on a screen as a character in the movie.
Using cutting-edge technology, the artists
ingeniously combine art, science
and math skills to bring the sets and
characters alive.
Stephanie Mondragon, Arcadia
STS, is helping the students produce
claymation projects using stop-motion
animation. What the students learned
at Lumenas will help them now and in
future projects. Several students have
set a goal to work at Lumenas after
they graduate from college, Eloise
reported. In the meantime, they can’t
wait to see The Legend of Santa Claus
when it is released in 2010.
Congratulations
Car buffs show off skills
The district’s Career and Technical Education (CTE)
automotive program sponsored its second annual car show
on May 9. In 2008, there were 15 entries; this year more
than 90 cars were on display at the GEC.
The purpose of the show is to allow students to show
off the work they had completed on cars during the school
year. In addition to exhibiting their skills, it provides a
networking opportunity with people from the auto industry
and postsecondary programs, said CTE Specialist
Sandra Hemmert. Judging the event were representatives
from Larry H. Miller Chrysler and Chevrolet, Weber State
and Utah Valley Universities, 4Wheel Parts and Ken Garff
dealerships. Student winners included Garrett Battalgia,
Skyline, best domestic, a 1954 Chevy Bel-Air; Spencer
Dahl, Olympus, best import, a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta
GTI; Chantal Nielson, Cyprus, best student, a 1978 Chevy
Camaro Z28; Ethan Peterson, Cottonwood, best sound,
1976 Chevrolet Monte Carlo and Sam Lipscomb, Granger/
Olympus, diamond in the rough, 2003 Chevy Cavalier.
Steve Jones, who wrote music and lyrics for the Prevention Dimensions
program, sings to students at Whittier Elementary School. The statewide
program teaches students about helping others, buckling up, managing
stress and avoiding drugs and alcohol. Students at Whittier participated
in the program throughout the year and sang along.
Crestview Elementary School students cartwheeled, jump-roped,
danced and hula-hooped during an assembly celebrating the completion
of a physical fitness awareness program fifth graders at the school
participated in. Parents also got involved in the fun, competing in the
school’s own version of Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader.
Connections
Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticize
me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I
may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I may
not forget you.
