IMMIGRATION AND CITIZENSHIP
MISSION STATEMENT
We the Department of Immigration and Citizenship exist to provide excellent service in areas of
immigration, Citizenship and Passport. We are committed to protect the public against the entrance and
residence of people with undesirable behavior in order to ensure a safe and secure nation.
The Ministry of Labour and Home Affairs has put in place to improve the security of Botswana passport
and these measures include the following:
1. Centralization of the processing of passports in Gaborone
2. Computerization of the passport and border control system, which project is at contract
negotiation stage.
3. Submission of applications and collection of passports will continue through Regional and District
Immigration Offices
Does this change the normal process of emergencies documents?
This arrangement does not in any way cancel the normal process of facilitating emergencies like visits
for funerals, medical attention etc, which will continue to be issued on a case by case basis. The
emergency travel document requires one to be in possession of Omang, two passport size photos and
P10.00.

OR LEGAL GUARDIAN WITH AN IDENTITY CARD
IF PASSPORT LOST SHOULD COMPLETE AN AFFIDAVIT

The Ministry will no longer issue students with passports for purposes of confirmation of age in
sporting activities. Such confirmations will have to be done using Birth Certificates. Parents are
therefore encouraged to register and collect Birth Certificates for their children for age
confirmation purposes.
Citizens who lose their passports will not be issued with replacements in less than a year on
average. The replacement cost of a lost passport will be up to P1000.00.
The Emergency Travel Document will continue to be issued in the normal process at all
Immigration offices at a cost of P10.00.
Members of the public are to note that a Passport is a traveling document and it is used
solely for purposes of traveling. The expectation is that all citizens have National Identity
Cards for identification purposes.
APPLICATIONS FOR VISA TO ENTER THE REPUBLIC OF BOTSWANA SHOULD INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING;
1. FULLY COMPLETED IMMIGRATION SUPPLEMENTARY FORM D;
2. CERTIFIED COPIES OF PASSPORT PAGES
3. TWO IDENTICAL PASSPORT SIZE PHOTOGRAPHS (with owner’s name at the back)
4. COVERING LETTER FROM THE HOST
5. A CERTIFIED COPY OF HOST’S NATIONAL IDENTITY/RESIDENCE PERMIT/EXEMPTION
CERTIFICATE/NATURALIZATION CERTIFICATE
6. A NON REFUNDABLE FEE OF P500 PER APPLICATION
REQUIREMENT FOR EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE
1. Copy of a contract
2. Support/covering letter from employer

3. Copy of a passport
4. Two identical passport size photos
5. Marriage Certificate (if married)
6. Birth Certificate for kids
7. Admission letters from school for children
