13.0 IMPLEMENTATION AND FUTURE ACTION The Brisbane Water Plan of Management will be submitted to Council, relevant government departments and the local community for a review of the objectives, management guidelines and management actions outlined throughout the document. The Plan of Management must not end up sitting on the shelf, but will be endorsed and acted upon by Council, all relevant government departments and most importantly the people and communities who live around and use and enjoy the Brisbane Water estuary. The Plan of Management for Brisbane Water is expected to be implemented and actions monitored over the next five years after which time it will be reviewed by Council for its effectiveness in protecting and maintaining the environmental values and recreational benefits of Brisbane Water. It is expected that the plan will provide an effective framework to manage the waterway and foreshore areas and act as a tool in successfully obtaining funding from government sources to carry out the implementation of works nominated within the plan. 13.1 Environmental Results Anticipated It is anticipated that the following environmental results will occur as a result of the successful implementation and adherence to the planning and management objectives of the Brisbane Water Plan of Management. • The Brisbane Water estuary in general receives a high degree of protection, and retains its intrinsic values. • The natural values associated with Brisbane Water are protected for future generations. • Important ecosystems and other natural and physical resources are protected. • Any significant adverse effects on native plants and animals or their habitat are of a temporary nature. • Outstanding natural features and important cultural and historic features are protected. • Activities in the coastal marine area do not increase the risks from coastal hazards. • The foreshore, and seabed areas around Brisbane Water are protected. • Important views are not adversely affected by development or use. • The natural character and amenity values are preserved and individual developments generally contribute to the maintenance of high environmental quality. • There is no net decrease in the quality of water in Brisbane Water adjacent to urban areas is safe for swimming an other recreational pursuits, including recreational fishing. • Adverse effects on existing lawful activities are minimised. • Recreation and leisure opportunities in Brisbane Water are enhanced because: - important views, to and from land over Brisbane Water, which contribute to the leisure experiences, are protected; Brisbane Water Plan of Management - July 1995 Page 52
- amenity values are protected; - the overall quality of public access is maintained and enhanced; and - estuarine water quality is improved. • Adverse effects from excessive noise in Brisbane Water are minimised. • Structures in Brisbane Water are in a safe condition and do not have a detrimental effect on the visual amenity of the area. • There are no obstructions to navigation in Brisbane Water and that the main navigation channels within the estuary are safely navigable.
