9.0 TOURISM AND TRANSPORTATION Brisbane Water has long been an important tourism focus and has historically been an important transport system. A number of ferry services operate throughout the system which together with the provision of public wharves provide a continuing important link for water-borne transport between settlements around Brisbane Water. Tourism is also an important industry within the Gosford City Council area. Recreational fishing and boating is very popular with the provision of related facilities such as fishing off jetties and wharves, boat hire and charter facilities and numerous local boat ramps and public jetties and wharves for public berthing. These tourism and transportation issues are addressed by the plan by attempting to provide a balance between competing interests in using the natural attractions of Brisbane Water for recreation and commerce. 9.1 Management Objectives Tourism and Transportation MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES PRIORITY FOR ACTION RESPONSIBILITY a To encourage and promote the efficient use of existing facilities for Tourism and Transport within Brisbane Water. H Council, Waterways Authority 9.2 Management Guidelines Tourism and Transportation MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES PRIORITY FOR ACTION RESPONSIBILITY a The ongoing use of public facilities for access to the waterways, boating and fishing be encouraged and the existing facilities be maintained to a satisfactory standard. O Council b The accessibility of Brisbane Water from the foreshores be maintained by encouraging public use in areas designated as appropriate and by providing facilities and allowing reasonable uses in those designated areas. O Council c The transport usage of Brisbane Water be encouraged and the Public Wharves suitable for transportation use be maintained to a satisfactory standard for use as a transport facility. O Council d Council may support, subject to investigation by the proponent, the location of any commuter docking facility for inter-city ferry services only within the Ettalong Beach Area. 9.3 Management Actions MANAGEMENT ACTION PRIORITY FOR ACTION RESPONSIBILITY FUNDING Tourism and Transportation a The accessibility of Brisbane Water along the channels be maintained and enhanced by adequate channel marking; mapping of the channel system and appropriate channel improvements by dredging, consistent with the natural restrictions which exist in the waterway of channel width, channel depth and the depth of the entrance channels and sandbars. M Council, Waterways Authority, LAWC (CLS) Council, Waterways Authority b Council should recognise the shortfalls for boating service facilities such as refuelling, bait and tackle and commercial facilities particularly within the northern end of Brisbane Water at Gosford. Sewerage and bilgewater disposal and pumpout facilities are required in order to provide a facility for efficient and hygienic waste disposal which may also assist in maintaining water quality.
