7.0 CHANNEL AND FORESHORE PROTECTION The plan of management has identified existing and proposed foreshore protection works and various waterway improvements. (Refer to Figures 23 to 25 and Table 5.) Due to a combination of Brisbane Water being both a relatively shallow waterway and popular as a recreational boating and fishing estuary, problems have been experienced with the ability to navigate the various channels which has generated concerns and demands over the need for maintenance dredging of channels. Associated with the issue of boating use and foreshore access is the issue of foreshore protection in an effort to prevent and reverse any erosion impacts occurring to public foreshore areas around Brisbane Water. 7.1 Management Objectives MANAGEMENT OBJECTIVES Channel and Foreshore Protection PRIORITY FOR ACTION RESPONSIBILITY a Identify the main, secondary and minor navigational waterway areas of Brisbane Water. Completed Council, Waterways Authority b Identify the main navigational problem areas and recommend channel depths to be maintained. O Council, Waterways Authority c Identify by signage clearance distances under bridges, power lines and over submarine cables. O Council, Waterways Authority, Telstra, Syd Elect d Identify navigation channel problem areas requiring action. O Council, NSW Fisheries, Waterways Authority, LAWC (CLS) e Identify and assess areas of public foreshore which require protection works or where existing protection works are adequate. 7.2 Management Guidelines MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES Channel and Foreshore Protection PRIORITY FOR ACTION RESPONSIBILITY a All dredging activities must comply with the "Guidelines for Future Dredging Operations, Maintenance Works and New Drainage Systems in Brisbane Water, Gosford, NSW. As a Safeguard Against Vibrio vulnificus in Oyster Harvest areas - 1994" prepared by Andrews Neil Consultants and Gosford City Council (refer to Appendix D). O Council, LAWC (CLS), LAWC (C&E), NSW Fisheries b All dredge spoil disposal sites will be located in areas which avoid SEPP 14 Wetlands or areas containing sensitive mangrove, saltmarsh and seagrass areas in order to avoid any adverse environmental impacts. All dredge spoil should be investigated during the early planning stages for suitable disposal sites and acid sulphate soil potential. O Council, LAWC (CLS), LAWC (C&E), NSW Fisheries c Associated with any foreshore protection work, the selection of any protective wall or structure should be based on wave height, fetch and the best type of protection with consideration given to the use of foreshore in consultation with the Coast and Estuaries Directorate of the Department of Land and Water Conservation..
