FUTURE DIRECTIONS FOR WATER QUALITY / ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH MONITORING 4-20 Table 4.2 Parameters to be monitored In-situ monitoring (monthly at high water slack) Sample & lab analysis (monthly at high water slack) Additional site information (monthly at high water slack) • Dissolved oxygen • pH • Turbidity • Temperature • Salinity / conductivity • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) • Ammonia • Oxidised nitrogen • Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN) • Total nitrogen • Orthophosphate • Total phosphorus • Suspended solids • Chlorophyll-a • Algal counts (3 sites only) (1) • Enterococci (or Faecal sterols) (2) • Water level (relative to surveyed tide board) (3) • Rainfall during preceding 48 hours (4) • Rainfall during preceding 7 days (4) • Entrance condition (lagoons only) 1) Algal counts are recommended to be measured at the Cockrone Lagoon, Terrigal Lagoon and Woy Woy Creek sites. 2) Faecal sterols should be substituted for Enterococci is there are sufficient funds available. Commercial faecal sterols analysis can be carried out locally at the University of Newcastle for less than $150 per sample (compared to approximately $30 per sample for enterococci, i.e. an extra $14,400 is required) 3) Tide boards will need to be installed and surveyed to a standard datum prior to the commencement of water quality monitoring. 4) Rainfall to be measured by automated local rain gauges, one located near the coastal lagoons (eg on the roof of a Council owned childcare centre), and one located closer to Brisbane Water (eg on the roof of Mann Street Council building).
