Principal’s Report
Thank you to those parents and staff who have renominated or newly nominated for
School Council positions for the next 2 years. Congratulations to Tania Shepherd, Grant Hausler,
Andrea Burns, Sharon Richardson, Therese Allen and Trevor Whitworth upon their appointment
to School Council. We would also like to thank Andrew Dodson and Michelle Lowe for their
assistance over the years. Our next School Council meeting for all newly appointed and returning
participants will be on March 15 th . The Annual General Meeting will precede the main meeting
and will begin at 7.30 in the school staffroom.
The House Swimming Sports are uppermost in many of the students’ minds this week and
we wish all participants a great day in the water. A reminder that the sports start promptly at 2pm
and all students should be there ahead of time. Students will also need to notify their bus driver if
they need to be transported to or from the swimming pool. Parents Club will again be organising
a BBQ and we hope the weather holds to make it a great afternoon. If parents are able to make
it, it is an excellent day and a great opportunity to support your child representing his or her
house at the school. This year we see the introduction of some buddy races for the junior and
senior primary students. House Captains will have their first major team competition to organise
and support so we wish Joe, Sam, Renee, Josh, Oliver, Stevie, Ameilia and Isobelle the best of
luck for Thursday.
Well done to all of those students who represented the school at the Wimmera Swimming
Sports last week. Thanks also to Mr Wearne and Ms Aldridge for accompanying the students on
the day. We had a number of successful students who have the opportunity to advance to the
next level. We are unsure why the Association needed to have their sports so early – even before
our own House Sports, but the students achieved some great performances and were able to
bring home the Handicap Shield. The Handicap Shield is awarded taking into account the
school’s swimming achievements on the day and the size of the school population. We do
extremely well considering our small numbers.
We also found out last week that Joe Colley has been selected as one of the best 60
students in Victoria to attend the Deakin University’s Faculty of Business and Law annual
residential programme in Geelong. This week long programme offers the opportunity to
participate in a programme managing hypothetical companies competing as market leaders. Well
done Joe.
Our new playground has been installed for senior primary and secondary students next to
the tennis courts and we have revamped some of the older equipment with improved soft fall and
edging. This week we hope to have much of the plumbing to the gym disabled toilet completed
and the outside art area is also nearing completion.
The laptops are making their way home now and we have been very pleased with the
response from students and families. We hope this will also assist students getting homework
tasks completed. There have been a few complications with accessing internet at home and we
are still helping individual students work through any problems. Please contact the school if there
are any queries about the laptop programme. Coralie will be issuing receipts for any payments
made.
After a week-long fierce campaign by both
candidates, it was announced on Monday that
both Renee and Joe would be co-captaining our
school into a “better future...today”. Throughout the
week we saw posters, fliers, banners, suits, cupcakes,
Facebook pages and campaign commercials.
A great effort by both parties.

They’re back…
Head lice are common in school-aged children and are the most adaptable of
creatures. They have survived living solely on human for 10 000 years. You
may be reassured to know that they are commonly found in places other than
Goroke P-12 College.
Some of the reasons they have survived for as long as they have are:
The six legs of a louse end in a claw, allowing them to grip the hair.
They detect vibration and can hide - (conditioner will help fix this
problem)
Head lice can ‘hold’ their breath for 20 mins – looking like they are
dead.
The eggs are attached to the hair with a ‘glue’ like substance. Studies
conducted on 45 different products to dissolve the ‘glue’ showed
nothing would dissolve it.
The good news…
We know where they live and we know how to find them.
If you follow these steps, once a week, the control of
head lice in your home will be greatly improved.
Step1
Step 2
Comb inexpensive hair conditioner on to dry, brushed (detangled)
hair. This makes it difficult for lice to grip the hair or run around;
Wipe the conditioner from the comb onto a paper towel or
tissue;
Step 3 Look on the tissue and on the comb for lice and eggs;
Step 4 If lice or eggs are found, the child should be treated;
Step 5
If the child has been treated recently and only hatched eggs are
found, you may not have to treat since the eggs could be from the old
infection.
If your child has head lice – tell anyone who has had
head to head contact with them and ask them to check
their family for head lice.
