Mrs Rich
I hope parents were able to catch the Channel 7 news on Monday evening. It was a
great story about our Advance class and the role that our local policeman Jim Richardson
plays in relating to young people in the West Wimmera Shire. This Shire has one of the
lowest youth crime rates in the State and Jim’s involvement with our school and others within
the region has certainly assisted with that. We saw a great interview from Sean and some
excellent footage of the students in action. Please don’t make any hasty judgements about
their marching ability based on that footage by the way – this was their first session and we
clearly all have a long way to go! Copies are available for any family or student who would like
one.
Exams are over for year 12 but year 11’s are hard at it this week. All year 12 subjects
still require exams at VCE level and it important for our students to practice this type of
assessment in year 11. Reports are also nearly completed and will be handed out on the last
day of school next week. Please remember that although parent teacher meetings are not
scheduled for this term, you are more than welcome to contact the school to arrange for a
meeting with relevant teachers to discuss your child’s report early next term.
Mr Charlton, Mrs Hausler and I attended an Ultranet training activity on Wednesday at
Apsley Primary school. As has been mentioned in previous newsletters, the Ultranet will be
an amazing communications link between home school and student when it finally gets up
and running. Currently, the teacher element is being rolled out and later this year there will be
a state wide professional development day to allow teachers to become more conversant with
the potential of Ultranet. They are looking at introducing students onto the Ultranet later this
year and parents next year some time. We will keep you informed as we hear more news.
School Councillors, please don’t forget that we have a meeting this coming Monday.
We struggled for numbers at the last meeting and we need to ensure that we have a quorum
and sufficient numbers to move and pass items on the agenda.
Thank you to those community members and parents who have responded to the
request for assistance with primary classes if our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen application is
successful. Applications close in 1 week and we will be notified in third term if we are
successful. If you feel you have some knowledge and know-how, either in the kitchen or the
vegetable garden, please contact us if you would like to be involved.
Thursday is Jump Rope For Heart and Healthy Eating Day. Thank you to all students
who have been raising money for the heart foundation as well as keeping themselves fit by
skipping each week this term.
Wednesday was the regional Careers Expo and our senior students had the
opportunity to check out post secondary options for when they leave school and decide on a
future career.
Day 1:
On my first day of work experience I worked with Daryl Clark and Bradley King. We
were working on a chimney and verandah in Culliver Street Horsham. Bradley and I
removed 1/3 of this chimney and most of the old verandah.
Day 2:
On day two we removed the remaining parts of the verandah and started cutting new
support beams. The painter came and painted the beams before we started putting
them together.
Day 3:
On Wednesday we finished putting up our beams and started shopping around for
some flashing and to get a quote on some new guttering.
Day 4:
Thursday came up very quick and it was time to put the finishing touches on what we
could. We were unable to finish certain parts due to the lack of materials.
Day 5:
On Friday we had finished work on Culliver Street. Daryl had collected some bricks
from the chimney that we removed and my task was to clean the bricks up. After I had
cleaned a reasonable amount Daryl decided we were ready to start some work at a
house near Riverside. At this house in Riverside we had to put new boards on the
stumps of a house. This took the rest of the day, we got three of the four sides
completed.
Overall I had a good week of work experience and I would happily do it again.
A special thanks to Mrs. Smith, Miss Forbes and Daryl Clark.
As part of the Year 11 Systems
Engineering, the students must design,
build, test and evaluate a mechanical
system.
The students this year have opted to
build can crushers.
We Have a motorized test bed that we
can attach each crusher to for testing.
The crushers are designed to feed the
cans in via a magazine and drop the
crushed cans out the bottom.
The process has involved much revision
of ideas and alterations to models as
the project progressed. We are now at
the point where we have four nearly
complete can crushers entering the
final testing and evaluation stage.
Mr Smith
Over the past few weeks, the Year 7 students have been working on debates.
Two topics were given to the students. These being:
1. That living in the country is better than living in the city.
2. That sports stars are ridiculously overpaid.
The class was divided into four teams, with an affirmative and a negative team for
each topic. The students did an outstanding job preparing and delivering their
debates. They worked well in their teams, supporting each other, particulary with
the difficult task of rebutting. All of the students should be very proud of their
achievements.
A big thank you to Mrs Walter for the hard task of adjudicating.
Mrs Colley
Every single blade of grass,
And every flake of snow
Is just a wee bit different
There’s not two alike, you know.
From something small, like grains of sand,
To each gigantic star
All were made with this in mind,
To be just what they are
How foolish then to imitate
How useless to pretend,
Since each of us comes from a mind,
Whose ideas never end.
There’ll only be just one of me
To show what I can do
And you should likewise feel very proud,
There’s only one of you.
