National Literacy and Numeracy Week finished for us with a ‘Celebration Day’ where we
presented the projects that we had been working on throughout the week, although we all
look a little odd as it was our schools’ ‘Crazy Hair Day’ as well!
Each year level presented to visitors and other primary students their projects. Prep/1/2
showed their masks and story maps
they made based on the book ‘Possum
Magic’ by Mem Fox. Year 3/4 made
Memory Boxes from the book ‘Wilfrid
Gordon McDonald Partridge’ by Mem
Fox while the Grade 5/6 class made
digital photo stories based on
‘Whoever you Are’ by Mem Fox.
In Maths Prep/1/2 measured around
the school with ‘How many students?’.
Grade 3 and 4 showing their Memory Boxes
Grade 3/4 measured the perimeter of the
classroom and the weight of six dictionaries.
The Year 5/6 students made 1 metre cubes
using newspapers.
Overall it was a great week of activities and
we all enjoyed a yummy Australian morning
tea with lamingtons, pavlova, vegemite
sandwiches, scones, Anzac biscuits and
Minties after presenting our projects on
Friday morning.
This week we had a visit from 30 Principals, Assistant Principals and teachers
who are involved in the Instructional Rounds process. This process involves
classroom observations to help identify strengths within the school and also offer
ideas to the school for a future direction for professional development within the
school. Some excellent feedback from the visitors about the tone of the school
and the positive and challenging learning environment that we provide. A
number of schools in the Wimmera have become involved in this very valuable
opportunity and it has certainly given us a few ideas to follow up with over the
next few years. Thank you to the teachers who opened up their classrooms for
observation, to Coralie for the impressive catering and Rachel Hovey who
assisted in the office.
Thank you to Grady Charlton who did an individual presentation on his stay at
the John Monash Science School this year. Grady had the opportunity to be
involved in a nano-technology project whilst he was away and he was able to
give a brief rundown of what life was like at a specialist science school in
Melbourne.
Ms Cate Webb will be away on leave for the next couple of weeks whilst
she does some cycle touring in Europe. We wish her well and happy cycling. Mr
Lay will be returning to help replace a number of her classes and it is always
good to have him back on staff, even though it is temporarily.
Grade 3 and 4 are off on their trip to Swan Hill this week. A number of excited
youngsters were keen to head off on their camp on Wednesday and we hope
they have a great camp visiting the Swan Hill Pioneer Settlement.
On Monday 5th September we had a lady called Robin come to our school to
perform the alphabet using different types of dances for each letter. All through
the performance Robin asked for volunteers from the Primary audience to help her.
Everyone was amazed by her flexibility and she wowed the audience with her
stunts. All of the primary students really enjoyed her performance.
In Year 8 SOSE with Mrs Colley we have
just completed a project titled ‘A Trip
Around Australia’. Before we started
our project we used our mapping
skills to plan our holiday. We
calculated distances between
destinations and located tourist spots
at each place. We had up to a month
to complete our trip around Australia
and with no limitation on money some
Marissa
people were very extravagant! We
chose our own mode of transport and
again some
were very
extravagant!
Wouldn’t we all
love to travel in
Joel a Rolls Royce
Phantom or our
very own helicopter.
We recorded our trip in a diary and moved our
transport around our class map of Australia as
we travelled.
Crazy Hair Day
Student from the Snow River Campus organised a Crazy Hair Day to
raise money for the McGrath Foundation, which raises money to
place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across
Australia as well as increasing breast awareness in young Australian
women.
The day turned out a huge success with a total of $154.00 being
raised and most students and staff taking advantage of trying out
that ‘really special new hair do’ for the day! As well as Crazy Hair
the students were able to wear casual clothes and purchase icy
poles. Thankyou to everyone for supporting the day.
