Advance Graduation 2012
Students are pictured with Lucinda Nolan, Assistant Deputy Commissioner of the Victorian Police
Force and Leading Senior Constable Jim Richardson at the Advance Graduation.

What a great week for Goroke P-12 College. Not only did we have our
largest class for Advance celebrate the conclusion of the program with
a formal graduation at the Glen Waverly Police Academy, we also had
2 successful Angela Taylor Scholarship winners thanks to the
generosity of Club 41, a group of retired men and women who support
and encourage the police service. Congratulations to Jaden and James
for being the successful recipients of the scholarship worth $1200 over
the 2 years of their VCE studies. We hope parents were impressed with their child’s
participation in the graduation ceremony and it was so pleasing to see so many parents
make the long journey to Melbourne to be part of the occasion, especially the Schultz
family who were able to bring Tom down to part of the ceremony despite his leg injury.
Special thanks to Michelle Lowe and Don McEachran who drove the buses and helped
make the journey possible for many parents. Over the camp, students had the opportunity
to meet with Search and Rescue Police in Williamstown and we were treated to a special
visit to the camp by one of the Dog Squad members and his dog currently in training. We
were lucky enough to be able to graduate in front of Victoria Police Assistant
Commissioner Lucinda Nolan who inspected our students on the parade ground. Many
hours of drill practice certainly paid off and our students were very impressive on the day.
Many thanks to Leading Snr Constable Jim Richardson for all of his assistance over the
camp. The Victoria Police Youth Corps programme is so successful because of his
involvement and willingness to go above and beyond the ‘call of duty’ when it comes to
supporting our students. Thanks also to Mr Wearne who has taken the Advance class for
the 2 years and Michele Mulraney who accompanied us on the camp and has all the
photographic ‘evidence’ that drill is not easy.
Grades Prep, 1 and 2 are home from their Naracoorte camp today. They will be
staying at the Naracoorte Caves complex and should have a great time discovering fossils
and caves over the 2 days. Many thanks to Mr O’Leary, Christine and Mrs Walter for
organising the camp.
Another piece of good news is that we have been successful in our application for
funding to improve some more of the facilities in our Home Economics and technology
areas to be able to deliver Certificate courses for our students and the wider community.
We have been given over $9000 to put towards specialist equipment in both of these areas
and we would encourage any community members who may, in the future, be interested in
further studies in Hospitality or Auto studies to contact the school so we can discuss a
programme that may suit your needs.
Good luck to our year 7 girls cricket team who will be travelling to Melbourne next
week to compete in the State finals in Melton. We wish them all the best for their batting
and bowling on the day. Thanks to Mr Wearne and Mrs Allen who will be accompanying
them.
On the last day of
camp, we went to the
Melbourne Zoo, We
got to walk around in
our groups to explore
the zoo. We saw
lemmas, elephants,
frogs, snakes and
bears. It was cool!
Airley
At Scienceworks, we went to the
Wallace and Gromit Exhibition,
which was really interesting and
did lots of fun activities. We also
went to the general viewing area,
which was awesome and
then to the planetarium.
Natasha
Universal Pizza was a nice place to have
dinner. We had pizza, pasta and ice
cream for dessert. I thought the food was
delicious.
Millicent
When we had the Metlink Adventure, we
learnt about public transport safety. Some
people got highlighters for answering
questions.
Holly
The Victoria Market was an unexpected
activity. It was great to break up into our
groups to look around and buy things.
Sara
We went to the Eureka Sky Deck that took
31 seconds to get to the 88th floor. We
went on the Edge and when we were standing there it sounded like the glass floor
was cracking.
Kira

The Old Melbourne Gaol was the best. It
was interesting to find out that Ned Kelly’s
mum was also at the Old Melbourne Gaol
when Ned was a prisoner there.
Lucy
The Eureka Sky Deck was good fun.
There were two groups that went on
the Edge and most of my group
screamed.
Odette
At the Shrine of Remembrance, I
learnt lots about the war and even
heard the story about Lone Pine. I
thought it was interesting how we
were able to visit the Shrine at night.
Olivia
At the Melbourne Aquarium the best thing
to see was the sharks and how their teeth
were sticking out.
Carl
At the Aquatics Centre, we all enjoyed the
water slide and I thought the wave pool was
good fun.
Melanie

On Friday, we went to the
Melbourne Zoo. We got to
walk around in our groups
without a teacher. We got
to see snakes, frogs,
monkeys, bears and many
m o r e a n i m a l s .
Centre, we all had fun on
the water slide and the
wave pool.
Chantelle
At the MCG, we got to see the Members’ areas. We were lucky to see
Shane Warne shooting a TV advertisement.
Hayley Rogers

The Parliament
House was
interesting.
In the Senate, there
was red carpet which
meant royal blood
and there was gold
on the walls.
The House of
Representatives
carpet is green. We
were also told that
the Queen is not
allowed to walk on
the green carpet.
Sophie
Visiting the Water Police Search
and Rescue was good fun. We
got to see how they plan a search
and we looked at their boats in
the water.
Tyler
I really enjoyed all of the
activities on the Melbourne
Camp.
Casey
At the National Gallery of Victoria, we looked
at lots of paintings such as “Shearing the
Rams” and “I am not Sorry”. It was
interesting to hear about what the meanings
are behind the paintings.
