Exams are well under way here at school for senior students and we wish them well as
they finish up their studies over the next week. We look forward to celebrating their completion
of secondary education with students and their families on the 22 nd November.
We welcome Bernie McCuish back to school and the beginning of the Stephanie
Alexander garden aspect of the programme. We had a few volunteers in to assist and the
hothouses are full of garden beds just waiting for action.
Congratulations to the students and staff involved in some way with the Health Centre
market on the weekend. Our students were busy on stalls, taking young child activities, cooking
and serving and thank you to the many community members who provided feedback on the
food and drinks. The students and staff were very proud of what they achieved. Thanks also to
Mrs Hausler for making lemon preserves and lemon butter for sale to raise money for the
kitchen activities we are running at school.
School charges and booklists are being finalised and in the next week or so will be
distributed to families. Some changes that will be taking place next year will be the
reintroduction of language into the primary grades. Since Mrs Allen was appointed Assistant
Principal, we have not been able to staff LOTE across the school but Mrs Retallick has
qualifications in Japanese and she will be delivering the Japanese language across years prep to
year 7.
School Council has also decided for 2012 to remove the take home charge for students
who would like to take their computer home across years 5-12. The technology charge for ALL
students in these year levels will increase to allow for free access to printing (both black and
white and colour), 3 year upgrades to all laptops, regular turnover and replacement of interactive
whiteboards, access to digital cameras and flip cameras and ongoing free trouble shooting and
maintenance by our technician Erich Vix. This will mean that ALL students will be able to take
their laptops home but are also accountable for any damage that occurs during this time. New
forms will be distributed to students who would like to take their computers home in 2012 and
those students who, under the old agreement, were eligible to purchase their own laptop after 3
years continual lease will still be able to purchase their laptops for $50 at the end of three years
as long as they have maintained continual payments over the past 2 years. If you have any queries
about this change, please contact me at the school.
Planning for the concert is well underway and the students look forward to sharing the
evening with the school community on the 16 th December. It is a late break up this year and
remember that parents may make appointments with staff on the morning of the last day of
school if they would like to discuss reports. Activities week for both primary and secondary
students is only the last 3 days of school and Mrs Allen will have that information out to families
soon. This year we have changed the plans for the secondary students in years 7-9 in their last
few weeks of school. Students will be exploring their 2012 curriculum and beginning work for
next year. Students will be returning to school on the 2 nd February next year. Schools in the
region may be starting on different days next year depending on when they have scheduled their
professional development days. Goroke students will be starting the day after staff but there will
be 3 pupil free days distributed throughout the year.
We were saddened this week to hear of the passing of Mrs Esta Allen and Mr Ainselie
Starick. Our sincere sympathy to the Allen families and Hawkins family.

250g Plain Flour, plus extra for dusting
200g Wholemeal Plain Flour
1 tspn salt
1 tspn Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda)
1 1/3 cup Buttermilk, plus 2 tablespoons extra
Herb Butter
150g Butter
10 stalks Parsley
10 Chives
10 sprigs Oregano
Soda Bread with Herb Butter
What to do:
.. Preheat the oven to 230 C. Weigh the butter needed for the herb butter and set aside in
the small bowl to come to room temperature.
.. To make the bread dough, sift the two kinds of flour, along with the salt and bicarbonate
of soda, into the large bowl. Make a well in the dry ingredients, then pour in the 1 1/3
cup Butter milk. Mix quickly with the fork (or your hand) until you have a dough. Dust
the workbench and the baking tray with flour. Tip the dough onto the workbench.
.. Knead the dough briefly, then flatten to form a circle, about 3cm high, then transfer to
the floured baking tray.
.. Brush the surface with the extra Buttermilk and mark the loaf into 16 portions using the
back of the table knife. Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the heat to 200 c and bake for
a further 20 minutes.
.. While the loaf is baking, make the herb butter. Rinse the parsley, chives and oregano and
dry by rolling in the tea towel. Pick off any leaves that are yellow or slimy and place the
damaged leaves in the compost bucket. Set out the chopping board and large knife and
chop the herbs finely. Work the herbs into the butter, using the fork, until evenly mixed.
Place a double sheet of baking paper on the chopping board and spoon on the herb
butter. Roll the butter up tightly like a small sausage, twisting the ends to secure. Place
the roll in the refrigerator to firm up while the bread is baking.
.. Remove the bread from the oven. Tap the loaf - if it sounds hollow, then its done. Turn
out onto the wire rack and allow to cool a little before cutting.
.. Cut the herb butter into thin slices and serve alongside the
bread on the serving plate.
Notes:
The soda bread could be cut into small shapes before baking, then
baked for a shorter time (just 20 minutes).

Year 5 students with their homemade rockets.
In Grade 5 Technology students have been investigating, designing and
constructing water propelled rockets. The task involved the use of the
hot glue gun, measuring and cutting and the construction of a launch
pad.
The rockets were a huge success with some of them flying higher than
the tallest tree in the school!

Last Monday the year 5 students
blasted their home made rockets.
We used a pressure pump and
water to get them into the air.
Overall the rocket made by sara
and millicent, and chantelles’
rocket’ went up into the sky the
highest.
We had a great time making and
flying these rockets.

The Honda SL70 motorbike the
Auto class is working on
continues to make steady
progress. The tank and
mudguards have been painted
and polished and now look
really smart. Refitting these
components made it look like a
motorbike again and gave the
enthusiasm a lift.
Work is progressing on the
handlebars and controls and
they should be refitted soon.
The engine has been bored and
a new oversize piston will be fitted with new rings. With a new timing chain and a
general check of the oil pump and the rest of the mechanicals, the engine and
transmission should soon be ready to go back into the frame.
We are waiting on some mechanical components, decals and badges for the tank, a
speedometer and new footpeg rubbers. Parts have come from as far afield as the
United States, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. Most parts are available for the 40
year old Honda, but many suppliers are overseas and are reached on the internet or
ebay.

Do you have some fabric hidden away in a cupboard that you
no longer want? We are seeking donations of unwanted cotton fabric of at
least 1 metre in length for concert costumes. The fabric can be plain or
patterned.
If you have some that you could spare, could you please send it to me at the
school. It would be greatly appreciated.
