It has been our distinct pleasure and privilege to lead this remarkable institution<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r for 25 years. In <strong>Goodman</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong>’s 85 year history, this is a relatively<br />

short period of time, and yet it amazes us to look back on <strong>the</strong> company’s many<br />

accomplishments over <strong>the</strong> last two decades.<br />

The City of Chicago, our Board of Trustees and Women’s Board, audience and<br />

patrons, and artistic and administrative staffs have come toge<strong>the</strong>r to reinvigorate<br />

Chicago’s Loop with a $46 million state-of-<strong>the</strong>-art <strong>the</strong>ater complex, and we have<br />

filled this extraordinary facility with both bold new voices and works of critical<br />

Finding and nurturing new playwrights is vital<br />

to <strong>the</strong> future of American <strong>the</strong>ater. Reviewing<br />

scripts, commissioning works of emerging<br />

writers, and mounting readings, workshops<br />

and full productions requires a substantial<br />

investment of resources. Many of <strong>the</strong> artists who<br />

launched <strong>the</strong>ir careers at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> are now<br />

leaders of American <strong>the</strong>ater, including Rebecca<br />

Gilman, David Mamet and Mary Zimmerman.<br />

As <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> has demonstrated in its<br />

relationship with playwrights Luis Alfaro, Adam<br />

Guettel, Lynn Nottage, Sarah Ruhl and many<br />

o<strong>the</strong>rs, time spent cultivating <strong>the</strong>se voices will<br />

reap great rewards for <strong>the</strong>atergoers everywhere.<br />

A uniquely American art form, musicals have<br />

thrilled audiences since <strong>the</strong>ir beginnings.<br />

Musicals remain a significant contribution to<br />

American <strong>the</strong>ater and an important part of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Goodman</strong>’s legacy. The <strong>Goodman</strong> is committed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> time and talent needed to sustain <strong>the</strong><br />

musical genre. Since moving into its new facility<br />

in 2000, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> has premiered new<br />

musicals such as The Visit, Bounce, <strong>the</strong> Tony<br />

Award-winning The Light in <strong>the</strong> Piazza and Turn<br />

of <strong>the</strong> Century, while mounting major musical<br />

revivals such as Purlie, Ain’t Misbehavin’,<br />

Animal Crackers and Candide. The Musical<br />

Theater Endowment will help <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> keep<br />

musical <strong>the</strong>ater alive and thriving.<br />

The works of great American playwrights such<br />

as Eugene O’Neill, Tennessee Williams and<br />

Arthur Miller are <strong>the</strong> backbone of American<br />

<strong>the</strong>ater. The <strong>Goodman</strong>’s superb productions<br />

of <strong>the</strong> classics have also embraced <strong>the</strong> work<br />

of Shakespeare, Molière, Shaw, Chekhov,<br />

Beckett and o<strong>the</strong>r playwrights whose work<br />

continues to resonate. For many audience<br />

members, from young people on school trips<br />

to long-time subscribers, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> is<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir first introduction to <strong>the</strong>se beloved works.<br />

Supporting <strong>the</strong> Classics Endowment means<br />

that our cornerstone works, often <strong>the</strong> definitive<br />

new version of a favorite classic, will continue<br />

to thrill, delight and astonish audiences for<br />

generations to come.<br />

In our commitment to diverse aes<strong>the</strong>tics and<br />

points of view, <strong>Goodman</strong> <strong>Theatre</strong> provides<br />

audiences with a mirror of our city and world<br />

on our stages. Partnerships with companies<br />

such as Teatro Vista and Cuba’s Teatro<br />

Buendía and <strong>the</strong> rich collaboration <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Goodman</strong> enjoyed with <strong>the</strong> late August Wilson<br />

exemplify that commitment. The Cultural<br />

Diversity Endowment will support <strong>the</strong> work<br />

of diverse artists including Resident Director<br />

Chuck Smith, Resident Artistic Associate<br />

Henry Godinez and Artistic Associate Regina<br />

Taylor. This critical endowment will also<br />

provide resources for work by artists of color<br />

such as Thomas Bradshaw, David Henry<br />

Hwang, Naomi Iizuka, Lynn Nottage, José<br />

Charles Dickens’ classic story, exceptional<br />

actors and miraculous stagecraft have made<br />

A Christmas Carol a beloved Chicago tradition.<br />

For over 30 years, audiences have looked<br />

forward to <strong>the</strong> “Bah Humbugs,” <strong>the</strong> arrival<br />

of <strong>the</strong> ghosts, <strong>the</strong> music and dancing and<br />

Scrooge’s joyful discovery of life and love. Its<br />

timeless <strong>the</strong>mes of generosity and kindness<br />

have touched <strong>the</strong> hearts of thousands of<br />

<strong>Goodman</strong> patrons throughout its history. The<br />

With <strong>the</strong> opening of our $46 million complex<br />

in November 2000, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Goodman</strong> gained<br />

facilities worthy of <strong>the</strong> art within its walls.<br />

The beautiful complex has also revitalized<br />

<strong>the</strong> North Loop Theater District and created a<br />

place for patrons to come toge<strong>the</strong>r and share a<br />

communal experience. It has also allowed us<br />

to be on <strong>the</strong> forefront of <strong>the</strong>atrical and business<br />

technology that ranges from implementing new<br />

software that better addresses <strong>the</strong> needs of our<br />

patrons to providing our designers with highly<br />

specialized equipment to realize <strong>the</strong>ir vision.<br />
