A final group <strong>of</strong> localities can be more or less securely identified with sealing,<br />

but, on present evidence, the activities there seem to have been ship-based<br />

rather than shore-based, and it is highly unlikely that any physical evidence <strong>of</strong><br />

them will have survived. <strong>The</strong>se include Bligh, Nancy, Dagg, and Breaksea<br />

Sounds, Ruapuke Island, Masons Harbour, Lords River, Port Adventure, and<br />

Pattersons Inlet. For all but three <strong>of</strong> these (Breaksea, Ruapuke, Patterson’s) their<br />

connection with sealing is celebrated through their place-names, which were<br />

either bestowed by or commemorate sealers. Any attempts to change these<br />

place-names should be resisted, and their associations with sealing should be<br />

highlighted in the presentation <strong>of</strong> heritage information.<br />
