Many cultures have left their mark
throughout Cadiz 's long history. Examples
of this are the "Tajo de las Figuras" cave
paintings in Benalup; two Phoenician
sarcophagus es currently in Cadiz 's
Museum; the Roman remains of "Baelo
Claudia" at Tarifa, and the "Carteia" at San
Roque.
The province has over 30 castles and
fortresses, many of which are in a good
state of repair.
In the field of religious art, the province
also boasts an extraordinary collection of
monuments. Good examples of this are the
Cartuja in Jerez or the cathedrals of Cadiz
and Jerez.
As far as paintings are concerned,
examples of works by El Greco, Murillo,
Zurbarán and Goya can be found in many
of the province's churches and museums.
Founded by the Phoenicians about
1,100 years B.C., it is the oldest city in
the west. Many cultures have passed
through the city, Greek, Roman,
Visigoth, Arab etc. It was conquered by
Alfonso X in 1262, who built a
cathedral on the site of an old Arab
mosque.

Throughout its long history Jerez has been
strongly influenced by the different cultures
that have settled in its lands, each leaving
its mark upon the already deep-rooted
traditions of the city. These legacies now
form an essential part of life in the city.
The cultures of Phoenician Xera, the
strongly Roman Ceret, the important
Muslim Sherish all made their presence felt
up until Alfonso X, The Wise, took Jerez
back from the Moors in 1264 and was
responsible for the conversion of the city to
Christianity. This melting pot of cultures and
knowledge has helped to enhance the
artistic heritage of the city.
The old centre, declared to be of Historical
Artistic interest, is full of traditional, quaint
streets and squares where you can
discover secluded, hidden corners mixed in
amongst fountains, orange trees, palaces,
churches and sherry bodegas.

HORSES:
Since ancient times, alongside Sherry and
Flamenco, the horse has been one of the
strongest symbols of Jerez. A period of
great importance in this long tradition was
in the 15th century when the Carthusian
monks brought the world famous
Carthusian horse to Jerez.
Today there are a staggering number of
equestrian events in which this noble
creature can be seen. The Royal
Andalusian School of Equestrian Art and
the Yeguada La Cartuja; Hierro del
Bocado, have weekly shows. There is also
the annual Horse Fair and many
equestrian events forming part of the
Harvest Festival.
