MW FOOTBALL BY THE NUMBERS
WEEK 2 STANDOUT PERFORMANCES
The Mountain West is the only league in the country with two
players ranked in the top four for tackles for loss. Colorado State
senior Shaquil Barrett and Wyoming sophomore Eddie Yarbrough
are tied for fourth nationally with 2.5 tackles for loss per game.
Wyoming led all MW teams in Week 2 with a total of seven sacks
against Idaho, which marked the most by a MW team since
Colorado State had nine at New Mexico on Sept. 3, 2011.
The Mountain West is the only FBS conference with three of the
top eight punt returners in the country, led by Fresno State senior
Isaiah Burse, who is second nationally with 29.5 yards per return.
Boise State sophomore Shane Williams-Rhodes is sixth among all
punt returners with 23.7 yards per return, while Colorado State
freshman Tyree Simmons is eighth at 20.3 yards per return.
San José State’s 34-13 loss at 4/5 Stanford snapped an eightgame
winning streak for the Spartans, which was the program’s
first since 1987. SJSU has won 14 of its last 17 outings, dating
back to the final two games of the 2011 season.
The Mountain West is one of two FBS leagues (Pac-12) with three
of the nation’s top 12 in passing average per game. Wyoming
junior Brett Smith leads all MW quarterbacks with an average of
339.0 yards per game to rank ninth nationally, followed by Utah
State junior Chuckie Keeton (337.0 ypg, 10th) and Fresno State
senior Derek Carr (330.5, 12th).
Three MW quarterbacks rank in the top 13 nationally for total
offense, including two in the top four. Utah State junior Chuckie
Keeton ranks third nationally with 418.0 total yards per game,
followed by Wyoming junior Brett Smith, who ranks fourth with
417.0 total yards. Fresno State senior Derek Carr ranks 13th with
348.0 total yards per game. The Mountain West is the only league
in the country with two of the top four in total offense, and one of
two conferences (Pac-12) with at least three in the top 13.
New Mexico’s 42-35 overtime win at UTEP snapped a 15-game
losing streak in the state of Texas and marked the Lobos’ first
victory in the Lone Star State since a 40-10 win at TCU on Nov.
1, 1997.
Utah State’s 52-20 win over Air Force marked the Falcons’ largest
margin of defeat in a home contest since AFA dropped a 48-10
decision to 21st-ranked TCU on Oct. 22, 2005. It also marked
the highest scoring output by an Air Force opponent in Falcon
Stadium since 13th-ranked California defeated AFA, 56-14, on
Sept. 4, 2004.
Boise State has allowed just 33 sacks since 2009, the fewest
of any team in the FBS. Air Force ranks second with 35 sacks
allowed during that time.
After posting six receptions for 55 yards at 4/5 Stanford, San José
State senior Noel Grigsby set a program record of 36 consecutive
games with a reception.
With seven catches for 55 yards and a touchdown vs. UC Davis,
Nevada senior WR Brandon Wimberly extended the nation’s leading
streak of consecutive games with a reception to 42 straight (all 42
of his career).
After connecting on all six PATs at UTEP, New Mexico senior
Justus Adams extended his streak of successful PAT attempts to
47 straight, dating to the start of the 2012 season.
Boise State led Tennessee-Martin 49-7 at halftime, the most
points scored in the first half for the Broncos since also posting
49 in the first frame vs. Weber State on Aug. 30, 2007. BSU’s 49
first-half points tie for the second-most ever by an MW team in a
half, trailing only Fresno State’s 55 points in the first frame vs.
Colorado on Sept. 15, 2012.
Two MW teams gained at least 535 total yards in their Week 2
contests. Utah State recorded 577 yards of total offense at Air
Force, marking the sixth time in the Aggies’ last eight games with
at least 500 total yards, dating back to 2011. Nevada collected
535 total yards in its home opener vs. UC Davis, marking the
second time in three games the Wolf Pack has racked up at least
500 yards. Nevada posted 659 total yards against Arizona in the
2012 Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
