THREE MW TEAMS RECEIVING VOTES IN NATIONAL POLLS
Fresno State leads all MW teams in this week’s USA Today/Coaches’ and Associated
Press Top 25 polls after receiving 59 votes in the Coaches’ Top 25 and 26 votes in
the AP rankings. The Bulldogs are joined by Boise State in receiving votes in both
polls, as the Broncos garnered two votes from the Coaches’ voters and three from
the AP panel. Utah State rounds out the MW contingent, receiving two votes in the
Coaches’ poll.
FRESNO STATE QB CARVES NAME IN MW RECORD BOOK
Fresno State senior Derek Carr passed for three touchdowns in Saturday’s win over
Cal Poly, extending his streak of games with at least one passing touchdown to 22,
including 15 straight since the Bulldogs joined the Mountain West last season. Carr’s
15 straight games with a passing TD ties San Diego State’s Ryan Lindley (Oct. 18,
2008 to Nov. 7, 2009) and BYU’s John Beck (Oct. 8, 2005 to Oct. 28, 2006) for
the third-longest such run in MW history.
CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITH A PASSING TOUCHDOWN
1. Andy Dalton, TCU 21 10/17/09 to 1/1/11
2. Ryan Lindley, San Diego State 17 9/25/10 to 10/29/11
John Beck, BYU 15 10/8/05 to 10/28/06
Carr’s performance vs. Cal Poly comes on the heels of a record-setting performance
in the Bulldogs’ 52-51 overtime victory over Rutgers to open the season on Thur.,
Aug. 29. In that contest, he established school and MW all-time single-game highs
for most pass completions (52) and attempts (73), shattering his own record of 42
completions (Sept. 29, 2012 vs. San Diego State), while connecting on the fourthmost
passes by any FBS quarterback in the past 10 seasons:
Derek Carr, Fresno State 8/29/13 Rutgers 52-73-1 .712 456 5
Carr also eclipsed the previous MW record for pass attempts (67), which was
previously held by BYU’s John Beck (Oct. 8, 2004 vs. UNLV). Overall, Carr threw for
456 yards vs. the Scarlet Knights in Week 1, marking the fourth 400-yard passing
game for the senior QB as a member of the Mountain West. That ties San Diego
State’s Ryan Lindley (2008-11) for the most 400-yard career passing games in
league history.
FRESNO STATE’S ADAMS GRABBING ATTENTION FOR THE BULLDOGS
Fresno State sophomore WR Davante Adams caught five passes for 31 yards and one
touchdown against Cal Poly, extending his Fresno State and MW records, as well
as the nation’s longest active streak of 10 consecutive games with a TD reception.
Adams caught at least one TD in eight straight games to close out his freshman
campaign in 2012, which set a new Mountain West record and tied the Fresno State
record. The NCAA record for consecutive games with a touchdown catch (18) is held
by Pittsburgh’s Larry Fitzgerald.
BSU’S SOUTHWICK, USU’S KEETON CONNECT ON FIVE TDS EACH
Boise State senior Joe Southwick and Utah State junior Chuckie Keeton each threw
for five touchdowns in their respective team’s victories on Saturday, marking the
second and third time that feat has been accomplished in the MW this season
(Fresno State senior Derek Carr vs. Rutgers in Week 1). Southwick’s five passing TDs
against Tennessee-Martin matched the MW record for most by a senior, previously
set by several individuals and most recently by Carr. Southwick’s and Keeton’s five
passing TDs tie for third-most in a single game in MW history behind BYU’s Max Hall
(seven vs. UCLA on Sept. 13, 2008) and SDSU’s Lindley (six at Colorado State on
Oct. 24, 2009).
Keeton tied his career high, and his own school record, of five passing touchdowns
against Wyoming on Oct. 8, 2011. He has connected for multiple passing TDs in
eight of his last nine appearances. Southwick’s five touchdown passes were a career
high and the first five-touchdown performance by a Bronco since Kellen Moore
accomplished the feat at UNLV on Nov. 5, 2011. Southwick has thrown multiple
touchdown passes in five of his last six outings.
PUTTING UP POINTS
Wyoming junior Brett Smith threw for four touchdowns in Saturday’s win over Idaho,
extending his streak of games with a touchdown (passing and/or rushing) to 25.
That ranks as the second-longest streak in MW history, behind BYU’s Max Hall, who
registered at least one rushing or passing touchdown in 28 consecutive games (Dec.
1, 2007 to Dec. 22, 2009). With an active streak of 15 straight games with a passing
and/or rushing TD, Fresno State senior Derek Carr is tied for fifth with SDSU’s Ryan
Lindley (Oct. 18, 2008 to Nov. 7, 2009) and BYU’s John Beck (Oct. 8, 2005 to
Oct. 28, 2006).
