SEASON PREVIEW: The fi rst three years of the Linda Lappe era
could be summed up by the following question...Can you top this?
Since returning to her alma mater in the spring of 2010, Colorado
has enjoyed a steady climb, improving its record each year while
achieving new heights along the way.
After several years of sub-par performances, the Buffaloes made
back-to-back WNIT appearances in 2011 and 2012. Last season,
Colorado broke through with a 25-7 record, 13-5 in Pac-12 play,
one of its fi nest seasons in over a decade. In the end, Colorado
was rewarded with its 13th NCAA Tournament appearance and
fi rst since 2004.
Now the question...what’s next for the Buffaloes in 2013-14? While
Colorado can use experiences from last year to build on, the Buffaloes
and Lappe have the perspective of taking it day-by-day this
year and working to get better in the present.
“It’s a different season,” Lappe said. “Sometimes we can look back
and remember how we accomplished something. Every team has
its own identity and this team’s has yet to be determined. Last year
we beat teams we should beat and did some good things. But we
have to be able to take care of business this year and then raise that
level...how do we build on that and keep going forward?”
“Everything gets harder. It’s easier to get to the top when you are
not very good than it is to stay at the top. So we have to keep getting
better. We’re very hungry to reach our goals, understanding how
hard we have to work every day.”
Colorado’s success last year can be attributed in part to taking care
of business; beating the teams they were supposed to beat. The
Buffaloes were a sparkling 24-1 against unranked opponents, with
the lone loss coming in the NCAA Tournament against a Kansas
team that had arguably underachieved during the regular season
after a Sweet 16 Appearance in 2012.
While Colorado will strive to maintain that success rate against the
majority of the country, the next step is to attack that next tier. Six
of Colorado’s seven losses came against ranked teams and fi ve of
those were ranked in the top seven.
Defensively the Buffaloes should be solid once again, and not surprisingly
as aggressiveness on that end of the fl oor has become a

trademark of the program under Lappe. Colorado is coming off of
one of the greatest defensive seasons in program history, setting
school records for scoring defense (54.5 ppg) and opponent fi eldgoal
percentage (.350). Senior guard Brittany Wilson emerged as
one of the top defenders in the Pac-12, being named to the league’s
all-defensive team.
On the offensive side, Colorado should be fairly balanced and as
good in the low post as it has been in years. Arielle Roberson, the
reigning Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, is Colorado’s top returning
scorer (12.1 ppg) and rebounder (6.2 rpg). She also led the Buffaloes
in trips to the free-throw line (97-of-142) and hit 41 percent
from 3-point range (21-of-51).
The Buffaloes also return three other starters with loads of experience.
Senior center Rachel Hargis started 31 games in the low
blocks before missing the NCAA game against Kansas with a knee
injury. At a solid 6-4, she gives the Buffaloes a strong physical
presence down low. Hargis led the team in blocked shots (34) while
averaging just over four points per game.
CU’s back court duo of Wilson and junior Lexy Kresl have the ability
to score in bunches. They rank 10th and 11th respectively in career
3-point fi eld goals and individually can light it up at any time.
Senior Ashley Wilson and junior Jasmine Sborov have experience
as a starter and off the bench; both have consistently provided energy
throughout their careers regardless of roles.
While neither Ashley Wilson or Sborov have eye-popping statistics,
they possess a trait that can be attributed to most of the Buffaloes,
versatility. Sborov can play all five positions on the floor, giving Colorado
a lot of different looks. Wilson’s energy off the bench as been
contagious over the past three years, and despite her 5-8 frame,
crashes the boards as well as some with several inches on her.
The Buffaloes have built themselves up to have plenty of depth from
the outside. Lauren Huggins, who missed all but fi ve games last
year due to an injured leg, regained that year of eligibility through
an NCAA medical hardship. Huggins is dangerous 3-point shooter
with range well beyond the arc.
Two new faces join the Buffaloes back court in point guard Desiree
Harris and wing Haley Smith. Harris averaged 15 points and six
rebounds as a senior for St. Joseph Notre Dame in Alameda, Calif.
Smith, from Sammamish, Wash., led her Skyline High School team
to the Class 4A state tournament and was the KingCo 4A MVP.
Colorado has an experienced front court. While Hargis has been a
mainstay in the post for three years, junior Jen Reese and Jamee
Swan look to continue to provide valuable minutes at one of the
forward spots.
“Post play has really started to become a strength, even last year as
we went through the season,” Lappe said. “Our strength and toughness
is much better and you can see that on the fl oor.”
Reese was one of the best bench players in the Pac-12 last year.
She ranked third on the team in scoring and earned honorable
mention to the All-Pac-12 team. Swan progressed nicely as her
freshman season went along, hitting 45 percent from the fi eld and
ranking second on the team in blocks (28) and fourth in rebounds
at 4.5 per game.
Entering the mix this year are a pair of 6-2 post players. Zoe Beard-
Fails averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds for Georgetown Day
School in Washington, D.C. Bri Watts, a Fresno, Calif., native helped
her Clovis West High School team to a sectional title as a senior.
Both players add a strong and physical presence to the Buffaloes
front court.
Colorado’s incoming freshmen have the unique opportunity of
already having played for the Buffaloes. During the tour, which included
stops in Lake Como, Venice, Florence and Rome, Colorado
played in three competitions, where all four saw signifi cant time on
the court. The experience also provided the young Buffs with an
extra 10 days of practice prior to the trip as well a chance to bond
with their new teammates.
One of Colorado’s challenges will be to replace two-time All-Pac-12
and honorable mention AP All-American guard Chucky Jeffery, one
of the most dynamic players in team history. Jeffery, who averaged
13.7 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior, fi nished her
career in numerous career top 10 lists at Colorado including points,
rebounds, assists and steals.
No one player is expected to replace Jeffery, and Lappe feels the
Buffaloes collectively are certainly up to that task, each stepping up
to take on different roles.
“We have players that are confident to do that,” Lappe said. “They’ve
all worked really hard and realize they may need to play a different
role than they did last year.”
Colorado once again has a competitive schedule that features games
against 12 opponents that advanced to postseason play a year ago.
That mix includes a rematch with 2013 NCAA runner-up Lousiville
on Dec. 21. The Buffaloes also have nonconference home games
against Big Ten foes Iowa and Illinois
“We have a really tough nonconference schedule,” Lappe said. “We
play some quality teams at home and on the road, and visit some neat
venues like The Pit (New Mexico) and the Yum Center (Louisville).
It should be a great experience for our players.
“With our schedule, are players certainly won’t get bored. They will
be intrigued about each game; we’ll really understand what it means
to be ready and prepared each time out.”
ABOUT THE OREDIGGERS: The Colorado School of Mines is an
NCAA Division II school located in Golden, Colo., and competes
in the prestigious Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, a league
Colorado was once part of during the fi rst half of the 20th century.
The Orediggers are coming off a 15-14 season in 2012-13, placing
sixth in the RMAC at 12-10. Senior forward Allie Grazulis was the
only player in the RMAC last season to average double digits in
scoring and rebounding. She led that circuit in rebounding at 10.3
per game while scoring 10.5 points per contest. Junior guard Taylor
Helbig is the team’s leading returning scorer at 13.4 points per game.
She ranked third in the RMAC with 62 3-point fi eld goals in 2012-13.
The Orediggers have been picked to fi nish eighth in the 2013-14
RMAC Preseason Coaches Poll. Mines opened its exhibition season
with a 95-47 loss at Colorado State on Oct. 28. Senior guard
Courtney Gallo led the Orediggers with 19 points, shooting 7-of-13
in that game. Freshman guard Laura Tyree scored 10 points.
BUFFS IN EXHIBITION: Colorado is a perfect 23-0 in exhibition
games, outscoring its opponents by 31.3 points per game (86.0
to 54.7). The Buffaloes have played at least one exhibition game
in all but one year (2009) since 1997. CU’s exhibition games have
featured a mix of NCAA II schools, foreign teams and traveling allstar
teams. CU’s closest exhibition contest came in 1997, a 77-72
win over Athletes in Action. Colorado’s last exhibition was an 87-38
decision over Western State Colorado University prior to the start
of the 2012-13 season.
This will be the fourth time Colorado and Colorado Mines have
hooked up in an exhibition game. The two teams squared off in three
straight exhibitions from 2005-07 with the Buffaloes winning by an
average score of 64-32.
BUFFS PICKED THIRD: On the heels of its best season in a decade,
Colorado was picked to fi nish third in the 2013-14 Pac-12 Conference
race in the annual Preseason Coaches Poll the league offi ce
announced at Pac-12 Media Day.
Colorado received 91 points trailing only defending co-league champions
Stanford and California. The Cardinal and Golden Bears were
essentially a unanimous pick to fi nish 1-2 respectively. Stanford
received 121 points including 11 fi rst place votes. California scored
111 points and received the other fi rst place nod. Coaches were not
able to vote for their own teams.
The third place preseason ranking is Colorado’s highest since a
similar third place status in the 1997-98 Big 12 Coaches poll. The
Buffaloes have climbed the ladder in three short seasons in the
Pac-12 Preseason Poll. Colorado was picked to fi nish 11th in 2010-
11 (eventually tied for 10th) and ninth in 2011-12 (placing fourth).
Washington, which fi nished one spot behind Colorado last year in
the fi nal standings, was picked to do so again coming in fourth with
85 points. UCLA, last year’s third place team, was sixth (80) followed
by USC (77), Utah (59), Oregon State (51), Washington State (50),
Arizona State (29), Arizona (21) and Oregon (17).
NATIONALLY RANKED: For the fi rst time since 2003, Colorado is
ranked in both the Associated Press and USA Today Sports Coaches
Top 25 Preseason polls, coming in at No. 19 in each.
Prior to the 2003-04 campaign the Buffaloes were ranked 20th in
both polls. The current preseason rankings are Colorado’s highest
since debuting at No. 12 (AP) and No. 13 (Coaches) heading into
the 2001-02 campaign.
The AP poll was released Friday with Colorado receiving 205 points.
The No. 19 spot matches the Buffaloes’ fi nal AP ranking from
2012-13. Colorado has been ranked in 15 consecutive AP polls, its
longest run since appearing in all 19 polls of the 2003-04 season.
The Buffaloes’ highest ranking during that span is No. 18, just prior
to the 2013 Pac-12 Tournament.
Colorado has a long history of rankings in the AP poll, dating back to
the 1980-81 season. The preseason ranking marks the 173rd time
Colorado has appeared in the AP poll, trailing only Stanford, USC
and UCLA among Pac-12 schools.
The Buffaloes received 172 points in the Coaches poll which was
released this past Tuesday (Oct. 29). Colorado was not ranked in
the fi nal 2012-13 Coaches poll, coming in as the fi rst team listed in
the receiving votes category. The Buffaloes appeared in 11 Coaches
polls in 2012-13, reaching has high as No. 18 the week of March
4, 2013.
Colorado has three preseason Top 10 teams on its schedule. Stanford
is No. 3 in both polls, reigning national runner-up Louisville is
No. 5 and NCAA Final Four participant California is at No. 9. UCLA
is No. 25 in the Coaches poll and receiving votes in the AP poll.
Washington also received votes in the AP poll while Iowa appeared
in that category in the Coaches poll.
BUFFS ON TV: Colorado will be featured on the Pac-12 Networks
for television appearances in one campaign.
Colorado’s appeared on a program-best 13 national and regional
telecasts in 2012-13, a fi gure that also included three postseason
contests. Entering this season, the Buffaloes have tipped off on 112
national or regional contests since the Fall of 2001.
Colorado will make it’s 2013-14 Pac-12 Network debut by hosting
Iowa on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in an 8:30 p.m. tip off.
Fourteen of Colorado’s 18 conference games will be televised on
the Pac-12 Networks, including eight of nine at home. All home
games not televised on the Pac-12 Networks, will be available online
TOUR OF ITALY: Colorado took a10-day tour of Italy this past
summer (Aug. 12-21) as players, coaches and staff took in the opportunity
to visit historic destinations including Lake Como, Venice,
Florence, and Rome.
Per NCAA rules, the Buffaloes were allowed to have 10 full team
practices prior to leaving for Italy. The trip was funded by donors of
the basketball program.
Colorado played two full games against a pair of all-star teams
made up of professional players from around Italy. The Buffaloes
won handly in both contests, 80-47 against the Toscana All-Stars
on Aug. 16 near Florence and then 96-22 against the Lazio All-Stars
in Rome on Aug. 18.
A third game against the Lazio/Latina All-Stars provided a unique
twist. The Buffaloes and their Italian counterparts played one normal
10-minute quarter that ended in a 20-7 Colorado advantage. For the
remaining three periods, the teams started over on the scoreboard
and then shuffl ed rosters to form a Black and Gold squad. Senior
guards Ashley & Brittany Wilson, junior guard Lexy Kresl, sophomore
forward Jamee Swan and freshman center Bri Watts, joined the
Italian coach and players on the Black team, along with Colorado
assistants Jonas Chatterton and LaTonya Watson. Several Italian
players joined the rest of the Buffaloes and head coach Linda Lappe
and assistant Kelly Rae Finley on the Gold.
The contest proved to be highly spirited and competitive with the
Black team, led by Brittany Wilson, staging a last-minute comeback
for a 48-46 win. Wilson sank two free throws with under 20 seconds
left for the deciding margin.
HUGGINS RECEIVES HARDSHIP: Colorado guard/forward Lauren
Huggins was granted a medical hardship by the NCAA this summer,
allowing her to regain her freshman year of eligibility.
Huggins played in fi ve games as a true freshman before a stress
fracture in her right leg sidelined her for the remainder of the season.
She had six points and three rebounds in the win over Colorado State
on Dec. 5, in her fi nal appearance before the injury. Huggins is a
fantastic outside shooter that will help the Buffaloes extend the floor.
CHATTERTON PROMOTED TO ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH:
Fourth-year assistant Jonas Chatterton has been promoted to Associate
Head Coach.
Chatterton has been a member of Lappe’s staff since the very beginning
of her reign, joining the program on June 9, 2010. He assists
with recruiting, opponent scouting, post play development, offensive
and defensive schemes and serves as the program’s liaison with
marketing and promotions.
His fi rst three seasons at Colorado have been memorable to say
the least. Chatterton’s record on the CU bench is a sterling 64-37,
including three-straight postseason appearances. The Buffaloes had
one of their best seasons in over a decade in 2012-13, fi nishing at
25-7, fourth in the Pac-12 Conference, and advancing to the 13th
NCAA Tournament in program history, and fi rst since 2004.
2012-13 SEASON REVIEW: Colorado went into the 2012-13 season,
looking to “be uncommon.” Conference or national rankings or
advancing to the NCAA Tournament was not going to define whether
or not goals had been achieved. It was a call to do the little things it
takes to be great, knowing that focus and determination would get
the Buffaloes to where they wanted to be at the end of the season.
So a focused Colorado squad went about its business, displaying
the hard work, dedication and desire to “be uncommon.” From there,
the rest took care of itself.
Colorado had its best season in nearly a decade, finishing with a 25-7
overall record and by placing fourth in the Pac-12 Conference at 13-5.
The 25 wins are the eighth best toal in team history and the most
since 1995-96 (26-9) while Colorado’s 24 regular season wins are
the most since the 1994-95 squad won 24 en route to a schoolrecord
30-3 fi nish. CU’s .781 winning percentage is the fi fth best in
the program record book.
The Buffaloes registered a perfect preseason schedule for the second
straight year. Colorado won all 11 of its nonconference games,
including solid regional wins over Wyoming, Colorado State and
Denver. CU won its 16th Omni Hotels Classic title by defeating Texas
A&M-Corpus Christi and dispatching of defending Mountain West
Conference champion San Diego State.
But the win during nonconference play that began to turn heads, not
only in the Colorado community, but on the national scene was CU’s
statement-making 70-66 win over then-No. 8 ranked and eventual
national runner up Louisville on Dec. 14.
That win, which put Colorado at 9-0, helped propel the Buffaloes
into the Associated Press Top 25 for the fi rst time since 2008. Two
weeks later, at 11-0 and heading into Pac-12 play, the Buffaloes
entered the USA Today Sports Coaches’ poll. With the exception
of one poll (Jan. 8 Coaches), Colorado remained ranked for the rest
of the season, reaching as high as No. 18 in both polls March 4.
Colorado’s preseason push helped prepare the Buffaloes for a challenging
Pac-12 schedule. After finishing in a tie for 10th place in their
fi rst league season in 2012, not much was expected out of CU as
the team was picked to fi nish ninth in the preseason coaches’ poll.
The Buffaloes were aiming to find a way to get through a brutal beginning
of the league schedule. CU would pair up with the consensus
top two teams - California and Stanford twice in the fi rst four weeks
of the season.
California and Stanford were as strong as advertised, meeting up
with the Buffaloes ranked at least No. 7 or better in all four matchups.
While Colorado lost those four meetings, the Buffaloes sandwiched
in four wins against Utah (twice), Arizona and Arizona State to draw
even through the fi rst eight.
A disappointing loss at No. 18/19 UCLA on Feb. 1, put CU at 4-5
at the Pac-12 midway point. That loss coincided with consecutive
setbacks at the Bay Area schools, marking the fi rst time in school
history the Buffaloes had played three straight ranked opponents
on the road.
But the way the Buffaloes responded from that loss was impressive
to say the least. Two days following the UCLA game, Colorado rebounded
with a strong 65-49 win at USC. That victory sparked a run
which saw Colorado win its fi nal nine Pac-12 games, its longest win
streak within conference games in one season since the 1994-95
team swept the Big Eight at 14-0.
2013-14 Associated Press
PreseaSon Top 25 Poll - Nov. 1
2013-14 USA Today Sports/WBCA
Preseason Top 25 poll - Oct. 29
A little bit of everything happened during that late-season run. The
Buffaloes had convincing home wins over Oregon, Washington and
Washington State. CU also had nail-biting road wins, overcoming
double-digit defi cits in wins over Arizona State and Oregon State.
Colorado came back from a 12-point second half defi cit to defeat
Arizona State and erased an 18-point fi rst half defi cit to knock off
Oregon State in overtime.
The win at Oregon State capped off CU’s regular season run that
vaulted the Buffaloes to a 13-5 league mark and sole possession of
fourth place in the final league standings. Colorado’s 13 conference
wins were the third most in team history, trailing only the program’s
two undefeated Big Eight teams (14-0) in 1989 and 1995. The Buffaloes
fi nished +7 in league wins from a year ago (6-12).
Colorado earned the No. 4 seed in the Pac-12 Tournament, and
extended its overall win streak to 10 by defeating No. 5 Washington
70-59 in the quarterfi nals. This marked the fi rst time in program history
the Buffaloes had two winning streaks of 10 or more games in
the same season.
CU fell to top-seed and eventual champion Stanford in the semifinals,
its deepest conference tournament run since reaching the 2003 Big
12 semifi nals.
Capping off an outstanding regular season, Colorado was awarded
the No. 5 seed in the Norfolk Region of the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
It was CU’s 13th NCAA Tournament bid and fi rst since 2004. The
Buffaloes, which hosted first- and second-round games at the Coors
Events Center, welcomed in No. 12 Kansas, No. 4 South Carolina
and No. 13 South Dakota State to Boulder.
Colorado’s memorable run would end however in the fi rst round, as
the former Big 12/Big Eight rival Kansas Jayhawks claimed a fi rst
round win, 67-52 over the Buffaloes.
All-Pac-12 guard Chucky Jeffery led the team in scoring (13.7 ppg),
assists (4.0 apg), rebounds (8.2 rpg) and steals (2.2 spg). Jeffery
had 10 double-doubles on the season, eight of which came during
Pac-12 play. On the Pac-12 leaderboard Jeffery ranked fourth in
assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), fifth in steals and assists, sixth in overall
rebounding and defensive rebounds (6.3 drpg), ninth in scoring and
13th free-throw percentage (.709).
Redshirt freshman forward Arielle Roberson was second on the
team and ranked 17th in the Pac-12 in scoring at 12.1 points per
game. The 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and five-time Pac-12
Freshman of the Week, she was second on the team in rebounding
at 6.2 per game. She ranked seventh in offensive boards (3.0 orpg)
and 16th in overall rebounding the Pac-12 leaderboard.
Junior guard Brittany Wilson ranked second on the team in steals
(1.3 spg), assists (2.2 apg) and 3-point fi eld goals (32) while coming
in fourth in scoring at 8.3 points per contest. A member of the Pac-12
All-Defensive team, she became the 10th player in team history to
reach 100 career 3-pointers in the Pac-12 semifinal against Stanford.
Wilson fi nished the season ranking sixth in the Pac-12 in free-throw
percentage at .762.
Sophomore forward Jen Reese made a successful return from a
freshman-year eye injury, playing in all 32 games this season. She
was third on the team in scoring (8.4 ppg) and rebounding (4.9
rpg) while hitting 42.5 percent from the fi eld and a team-best 80.6
percent from the foul line. Reese earned honorable mention to the
