What began as a modest book fair founded by the famous Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier, eventually
became the most important literary event on the island. Every year tens of thousands of people pack
the San Carlos de la Cabaña Fortress in Havana, attracted by book launchings of all genres and topics
from Cuban and foreign publishing houses, along with panel discussions, poetry readings, concerts,
children’s events, and a crafts fair. After Havana, the fair travels to other Cuban cities. The Fair will be
dedicated this year to the People’s Republic of Angola and to the National Prize-winners for Literature
and Social Sciences Daniel Chavarría and Pedro Pablo Rodríguez, respectively. Given that the fair
attracts more and more public and exhibitors each year, the event’s organizers opened several subvenues
in 2011, including Biblioteca Pública Rubén Martínez Villena, Centro Dulce María Loynaz,
Pabellón Cuba, UNEAC and Centro de Estudios Martianos. The popular exhibition of Cuban and
international crafts will remain at El Morro.
