Dear Friends:
The last two years at Cleveland Rape Crisis Center can be summed up in one word: Growth.
More survivors than ever before walked through the doors at CRCC seeking help. More young
people than ever before heard prevention messages from trained educators at CRCC. And more
organizations and individuals contributed financially to the Center than ever before, making our
program growth possible and sustainable.
In 2011, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center served more than 20,000 individuals, more than doubling
the number of people reached by the Center in 2000.
Early in 2010, the Board of Directors engaged the staff, volunteers and broader community
in a strategic planning process to carefully and intentionally guide the Center’s growth in
areas where we can create the most impact and the most change. The process and guidance
are summarized in April 2011 in the Center’s “Plan for Change,” which is accessible at
www.clevelandrapecrisis.org/planforchange.
The process included a slight change to CRCC’s mission:
Cleveland Rape Crisis Center supports survivors of sexual violence,
promotes healing and prevention and creates social change in our community.

In 2011, CRCC served a record 20,163 people, a 98% increase since 2000.
Impact of American Reinvestment and Recovery Act Grants
In 2009, the Center was awarded several two-year grants for project budgets totaling more than $600,000
from the federal American Reinvestment and Recovery Act (ARRA). Through these grant programs, the
professional staff at CRCC grew from 16 to 26 for a 24-month period that ended in mid-2011. These
direct-service positions enabled CRCC to eliminate a six-month waiting list and serve more survivors
than ever before with justice system advocacy and therapeutic services. Even though the ARRA grant
programs have ended, CRCC has been able to maintain a no-wait-list policy.
More Growth Projected in 2012-13
In its Plan for Change, which was created after a year-long strategic planning process, CRCC’s Board of
Directors and executive leadership project as much as a 20% increase in the number of people impacted
between 2010 and 2013.

Survivors
Cleveland Rape Crisis Center offers comprehensive, compassionate services to those who
have suffered rape and sexual abuse; empowering them to reclaim control and move beyond
the stigma of victimization. Services include: a 24-hour rape crisis and support hotline,
hospital and justice system advocacy, and individual and group therapy.
2010 CRCC Eliminated Wait List for Survivors
For the first time in decades, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center eliminated its wait list. Instead
of waiting for months to get an appointment with a therapist, survivors can call and get an
appointment within days. A federal funding stream, the American Recovery and Reinvestment
Act, provided temporary grants to add 10 new staff members in 2009-2011, all in client-serving
roles such as therapists and justice system advocates.
2011 CRCC Launched First-ever Media Campaign
Cleveland Rape Crisis Center launched its first-ever mass media campaign designed to
encourage more sexual assault survivors to call its 24-hour crisis and support hotline
(216-619-6192). The campaign theme “Let it Out” was developed by current and former
clients at the Center and reproduced on billboards, kiosks and bus ads throughout the city.
The campaign was funded by a “Make it Stick” grant from the Saint Luke’s Foundation.

2011 CRCC Expanded to Geauga County
In the fall of 2011, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center began providing services closer to home for
residents of Geauga County. CRCC opened an office inside WomenSafe, a domestic violence
shelter located at 12401 Ravenna Road in Chardon. A licensed CRCC therapist works with
women, men and children who have experienced sexual trauma. There is no cost for services
or insurance required. This expansion is possible because of funding provided by the Ohio
Attorney General’s Office through the Victims of Crime Act.

Promoting
Prevention
Cleveland Rape Crisis Center provides education on the root causes and pervasive costs
of sexual assault and recruits community members to act as advocates to eliminate it.
Prevention is not just about stopping perpetrators; it’s about shifting the public’s consciousness.
Our society needs to understand why sexual violence happens and how our collective attitudes
reinforce the tolerance of sexual aggression. Programs include: school- and community-based
education programs, Men of Strength Clubs and Youth 360.
2010
CRCC Develops Young Leaders with Youth 360 Program
CRCC launched Youth 360, a new program to engage young people in the effort
to prevent gender-based violence. Twelve teenagers were selected from a
pool of applicants to participate in the youth programming board, which met for
monthly leadership trainings and activities throughout the 2010-11 school year.
During the school year, mentors helped each participant develop a unique project to
educate their school or neighborhood about sexual violence. Projects included a “Take Back
the Night” rally which was covered by local media and launching a school club to educate
and engage other students in the movement.
2011 Men of Strength (MoSt) Clubs Experience Record Growth
CRCC set a new record by running 11 Men of Strength Clubs, or MoST Clubs for short, in 2011,
reaching 106 young men. MoSt Club is an evidence-based, youth development and mentoring
program that focuses on preventing sexual and dating violence. MoSt Club provides young
men with a structured and supportive
space to build individualized definitions
of masculinity that promote healthy
relationships. CRCC started its first
club in fall of 2008.

Creating
Change
Cleveland Rape Crisis Center serves as the leading voice for the eradication of sexual assault,
calling for action on local, regional and national levels. We act as a vocal public presence
ensuring that sexual violence is top-of-mind in our community. We work with policy makers,
media organizations and community groups and agencies to raise public consciousness and
push for change in the way institutions and systems respond to survivors of sexual assault.
2010
Special Commission on Missing Persons and Sex Crime Investigations
In the fall of 2010, Clevelanders awoke to news that the bodies of 11 raped and murdered
women were found in the home of a convicted sex offender. Immediately, Cleveland Mayor
Frank G. Jackson appointed a Special Commission on Missing Persons and Sex Crimes
Investigations, inviting CRCC CEO, Megan O’Bryan, to participate.
Within 90 days, the Special Commission delivered a 900-plus page report detailing 26
recommendations for improvement in the way the Cleveland Division of Police responds
to these crimes. In the following year, 25 of 26 recommendations were implemented. Most
notably, an advocate from CRCC is now stationed inside Cleveland’s Sex Crimes Unit, working
side-by-side with detectives to support survivors as they come forward to report. In 2011,
this advocate made more than 700 phone calls to survivors, offering support and resources.
2011 FBI Recognizes CRCC with Director’s Community Leadership Award
On March 25, 2011, FBI Director Robert S. Mueller presented CRCC with a 2010 Director’s
Community Leadership Award. Megan O’Bryan, CEO, traveled to FBI Headquarters in
Washington D.C. to accept the award on behalf of the Center. Stephen D. Anthony, Special
Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Cleveland Division made a special appearance to present the award
locally at CRCC’s Faces of Change Luncheon on Friday, April 1. The award honors individuals and
organizations for their efforts in combating crime, terrorism, drugs and violence in America.
2011
CRCC and OAESV
In mid-2011, CRCC initiated a formal collaboration with the Ohio Alliance to End Sexual
Violence (OAESV), a statewide coalition working to eliminate all forms of sexual violence.
The agreement allows OAESV to utilize the existing administrative infrastructure of CRCC,
while maintaining separate 501(c)(3) status, board of directors and staff. The two organizations
share office space, equipment and support services such as technology and accounting.
The result is a stronger collaboration of service providers throughout Ohio and a louder,
more organized voice for survivors on policy issues.

Success
CRCC operates an organization to meet the needs of the community today and in the future.
Thousands of organizations and individuals generously support the mission of the Center. It is
our responsibility to grow the base of support and continue to invest resources efficiently.
2010 Sing Out! for CRCC
A standing-room-only crowd of more than
650 people packed The Cleveland Play House
on Thursday, May 27, when 120 community and
civic leaders sang out against sexual violence.
Sing Out! 2010, Cleveland Rape Crisis Center’s
unique biennial event, was a success, raising
a RECORD-BREAKING $318,000!
The all-star chorale, under the direction of
Kathryn Harsha, performed an inspiring
selection of music united by this year’s theme,
“Here Comes the Sun.” A survivor helped by
CRCC gave a moving testimonial and Leon Bibb of NewsChannel 5
read the poem 365 Days, written by another CRCC client. CRCC
honored Richard W. Pogue, senior advisor for Jones Day and
Joanna Connors, reporter for The Plain Dealer, for their
contributions to end sexual assault.
2011 CRCC Launches Faces of Change Campaign
In an effort to put a “face” on CRCC – and to encourage more
people to join the movement – CRCC launched a new fundraising
campaign featuring the photographs and stories of dozens of people
involved in the Center. The campaign features survivors, volunteers, a police
chief, a founder of CRCC, a foundation executive, a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner

As part of the campaign, CRCC held a Faces of Change Luncheon on April 1. Thank you to all
600-plus people who supported CRCC’s sold-out Faces of Change Luncheon, hel ping us raise
$140,000 for survivors of sexual violence. Congratulations to honorees Chief Michael McGrath
of Cleveland Division of Police and Dr. David Bronson of The Cleveland Clinic. Trisha Meili,
better known as the Central Park Jogger, delivered the keynote address.
Our generous community responded to the campaign in an astounding way, contributing more
than $85,751 to the campaign in 2011, a 46% increase in annual fund contributions since 2009.
