EXECUTIVE
DIRECTOR'S NOTES
Resulis to hand have delemined that Australia has won
the Mackintosh International Teams Competition for both
the open and Juniors (fourth successive year) with our
ladies team finishing second, despite th* magnificent
score. Full details are shown elsewhere in the magazine.
Visitors to head office will notice the magnificent trophy
cabinet built and installed by Laurie C~MO~S. The trophy
cabinet will ensure that all of our coveted trophies are on
display at all times and we look Po,yard to having on
display the Mackhtosh Trophy which will be returning to
Australian at an early date.
Planning is under way for the 1987 D.T.L. and Olympic
Discipline Championships not forgetting of course the
remaining National Championship for 1986 when the
Skeet shooters by all accounts willbe out in force at Wagga
in November. . . ..
Details on accommodation eto are included &this issue
for your information.
Great to see that Adrian Cousens has performed so well
in the U.S. with his second, on 2501250 at the U.S. World
Skeet Championships. More on the results once the team
have returned.
Not so good however are the Commonwealth Games
results, where we have been found wanting, no reflection
on those involved as I am certain that they have given of
their best, once again more on this once the team has
returned.
The World Shooting Championships are under way as
this issue is being posted to you. All eyes will be on the
team as they will be anxious to do well and record some
good performances for Australia.
On a more serious note, there are still some clubs who
have not yet paid their 1986 affiliation fee of 830. The
problems that would be encountered should an insurance
claim arise are monumental as until the affiliation fee is
received at the A.C.T.A. office, no insurance cover exists.
If your club is one of those mentioned in last months
C.T.S.N. do yourself a favor and check out the current
position with your club Secretary.
Mske certain that the protection that you believe you
have as a club member really exists.
Good shooting.
CHAMPIONS OF THE PAST
By George Biggs.
A.C.T.A. Historian
DONALD MACKINTOSH - World Champion
Australian Shooter.
Well before those of us who are shooting today were
born, Donald Mackintosh was making a name for
Australia on Eumpean Shooting Grounds and at the
leading Gun Clubs of England in the 1390's.
The following story is a personal sketch of Donald
Mackintosh by an un-named Australian Journalist of that
time and was published in a leading Melbourne daily
newspaper and magazines.
No branch of trade is more interestinn - than that of the
amusement, and the encourngement of shooting skill. In
the world of sport many mdividual marksmen have gained
worthy distinction. but I vcnture theopinion that amongst
them all there has been no more picturesque or noteworthy
personality than that of Donald Mackintosh, the
Australian native, who, for a quarter of a century, held
front rank in shooting circles, and for over 10 years shot
with marked distinction at Monte Carlo, Paris. London.
Rome. Madrid and other Eumpean centres. By dint of
natural aptitude, keen study, and persistent effort, he
lifted himself uo from small beeinninns - - into the verv "
Poremosr grnde of the world's marksmen, and eventually
gained a name equnl to the best of rhe world's best in the
use of the shot gun, both in the field and in International
competitions.
In shooting, as in other things, there is nothing like an
early start, and "Donsld", as he was for many years known
in the Australian shooting world, learned to handle the
gun when very young - not more than 6 years of age at the
most. Although not an exceptionally strong lad, he took to
the gun "like a duck to water". His earliest effort were
devoted to getting the best results he could from a flask of
black powder, a few pounds of lead, and an old-time
muzzle-loader, which could be adapted either to bullets of
the old spherical kind or shot. With this outfit he set out, a
not ambitious boy, with his gun under his arm, and the
world before him. His "first shot" waa at a flock of crows.
at the other end of a plough furmw, the alignment of
which, at that time, rather assisted his "sportingaim. He
took careful sight at long range, and sure enough there
was a "dead bird" accounted for. and eathered in as a
result oca well dvected effort APter tharhe had plenty of
practice on parrots, srupe, wlld duck and ocher feathered
species, as well as rabbits and hares. "Donald did not
make the acquaintance of a gun club until about 16 years
of age. The first he joined was the Bacchus Marsh Club,
and his first success was taking second prize in a shoot for
a trophy presented by Mr J. 0. Inglis, who was at that time
one of our foremost amateur riders, andlater the owner of
the Melbourne Cup winner, Malua.
At 23 years of age he was a member of the Melbourne
Gun Club, which has, for many years, been the leading
Gun Club in Victoria, if not Australia. Entering the club,
virtually as a "Novice", he was, at the end of the first six
months, back to wnat was then the handicap hit, 30 yds,
at pigeons. Once on that mark he has never stood nearer
up to the present day.
Amongst Mr Mackintosh's first notable successes was
winning the Melbourne Gun Club £50 Challenge Cup three
times and taking final possession. In doing this he had
shooters of the first order of skill to defeat.
Later on he had much success in open pigeon matches,
for valuable stakes, at the Melbourne Gun Club, the
Sydney Gun Club and various countly meetings. With the
true love of an Australian native for game shooting, he
spent much time in the leafy forests, and soon gained a
widespread reputation as a crack shot on quail, snipe, wild
duck, etc.
One episode remains fresh in Mac's memory of an outing
he had with the renowned American wins shot. Dr Carver.
in the ~~~- Yarrawonsa -~~-~ District ~. when
~~~~~
the twx cracks were out
after snipe and any ocher attractive "livc target" offemg.
Mac winged a galah, nnd Carver chased dojvn a beautiful
young swan. As the doctor was anxious to take away to his
American home something purely Australian. they
exchanged birds, and the great record-holder ever
afterwards cherished that galah as a domestic pet. He told
"Mac", when the two sports met at Monte Carlo many
years afterwards, that it was still living and flourishing in
its Kentucky home - and "talking like a bullock driver".
As.for the swan: that also still survives.
It is not so much on his Australian doings as on those at
Monte Car10 and the other great European shooting
grounds and at the leading gun clubs of England that
"Donald's" reputation has been built up. As a single man
he first visited England and the classic rendezvous on the
shores of the Mediterranean, ruled over by the Prince of
Monaco, in 1896. After a two years' tour, he came back to
Australia, having made good impressions in Europe and
England. He retuned to the shooting world's great
centres in the year 1900 a married man, taking his
Australian wife with him. For nine years thereafter
"Donald worthily represented the Australian democracy
in Eumpean and British shooting circles, gaining much
prominence as a successful competitor in the most
important shooting events in the old world.
A reference to the splendid may of gold medals,
illustrated on page 31 of this catalogue, will give an idea of
the success which attended "Donald's" gun whilst abroad.
Words cannot speak more eloquently than that collection
and the photos of valuable Challenge Cups, won at London,
Paris, and Melbourne, as shown on page 32.
Some of "Donald's" more conspicuous wins in Australia.
the continent and in England and their value are as
follows:-
1. First in Melbourne Gun Club £1000 Cup Handicap.
1890, killing 33 birds straight 30 yds.
2. Melbourne Gun Club f50 Challenge Cup. won three
times in succession. Won Cup and £150.
3. London Gun Club f 100 Challenge Cup, won three times
in succession. Cup and £250.
4. Paris Gun Club £100 Challenge Cup. won three times
10. Grand Prize Milan, divided first f800.
11. Grand Prize Madrid, divided first £600.
On his return to Australia, a few yems ago. MI'
Mackintosh, yielding to a natural inclination to assist
others to gain successes in a sphere which had proved so
fascinating to himself, decided to go into the business of
the impartation and sale of shot guns, rifles, revolvers and
all sporting requisities. He started at 400 Bourke-street
West, close to that historic sporting rendezvous. Kirk's
Bazaar, where he quickly secured a followhg, and rapidly
"caught the eye" of the local shooting world.
When in England, Mr Mackintosh took special steps to
acquaint himself with all the details and Processes of the
manufacture of shot guns and other sporting weapons,
and by personal inspection and interview, acquired a
knowledge of all particulars and peculiarities in the
hndon. Birrnineham - and Continental gun trade, both as
regards original manufacture arid tt~e~conditicns of the
export of guns. ccc. to Australia. The knowledge thus
"MI. hlacklntosh's performances at Monte Carlo, together
with Iris records made in England and Australia, are such
that, in n word, we declare hini the Champion of the
World."
From "Diana", Florence: "On the 23rd September. 1908.
Mr DonaldMackintosh, the famous shot, left for Australia,
dter an absence from that country of many years. He, who
had so many victories, and who made so many friends,
being as he was, the prototype of the correct sportsman.
has left everylmdy regretting his departure, and with a
sincere desire to see him again. We voice the sentiments of
every Italian shbter in wishing him a pleasant voyage and
great future happiness."
The "Grand World of Sport". Madrid, in an article.
discusses the most extraordinary shots of the world, and
sums up as follows
"The grnnd progranme of events, shot at Montecarlo m
fees for the var~ous Items total about .an equal t10.000
"The competitors at the series of events are of all
nationalities. But those who stand out most prominently
are Guidicinni and Grasselli, representing Italy; Count
O'Brien, Spain; Mackintosh. Australia; Robinson, the
United States; andRoberts. England. These gentlemen are
-considered by those best qualified to judge to be the
leading shots of the world.
"Among all the shooters who demand public notice by
their extraordinary performance, the one who stands out
most conspicuously from the rest is D. Mackintosh, whom
we have no hesitation in proclaiming the best shot in the
world at thc present time."
In pwng these cuttings from many Press notices Donald
Mackintosh received whllc abroad, the obiect is to show
that the hand of good-fellowship is exte&ed to visiting
shooters most freely and cordially in Europe.
accounts the weather was certainly appropriate for the
INSURANCE:
One phase of cur sport which is probably more conPusing
than the rules is the old phobia of "Insurance".
To assist to clarify the position:
WORKERS COMPENSATION INSURANCE
This --.~. in -. a - noliov which is com~ulnolv at law and
~ ~~
= -~~-"
is -----.-
effeated
by the club to cover any person who is employed by rhe club
- simply, it covcrs al'. employees who arc injured on the
way to work. nt work. or on the way home Prom work. This
cover is compulsory and any employer who does not insure
faces a fine of $400 for every day that his employees are not
covered.
PUBLIC RISK or PERSONAL LIABILITY
This is the policy effected by the ACTA to cover its
members - it is a liability policy and not, I repeat NOT a
personal accident pqlicy.
The cover offered by this policy is one whereby some
personor the club has beennegligent and, as a result of this
negligence, another person is injured or killed. Before a
claim can be paid, full particulass must be lodged with the
Insurance Company and usually will not be settled until a
judgemdnt is awarded by a court. In 99% of cases the
injured party (or his or her next of kin) must sue a person or
a cluh and, after the due process of law is finalised, an
award will be granted.
This cover is automatio for all registered persons and
visitors under certain circumstances. Each olub must have
a visitors book and obtain the signature of any visitor -
~~
then, andonly then, are the visitors covered. Further to this
- certain persons, suoh as ladies working at the club eto,
are covered if the club registers their names at the ACTA
office. This is most important and is quite simple for the
club secretary to enclose a note to the ACTA with each
monthly shoot return.
DON'T FORGET - this is a LIABILITY POLICY and NOT
AN ACCIDENT POLICY.
ACCIDENT POLICY - CASUAL WORKERS
This policy is really important but very few clubs do
anything about it. The names tells the story - it is a policy
to cover any casual worker (suoh as working bees etc) who
is not an employee and is working for nothing. If they are
being paid they would be covered under the Workers
Compensation policy.
I'm not sure of the current premium cost as it varies with
the numbers of club members - recently, a olub with 25
members took cut a policy covering anyone injured for an
amount of $300 per week (up to a total of 810,000 for any
one accident) and the total premium was $121.40.
I personally feel that this is a most important policy and
should be effected by every club - it would be a great relief
to any president to know that, if any person is injured
whilst working for the cluh - then that person would
receive $300 or any other amount that the club insures for.
If the cluh cannot afford the cost, ask your members and
I'll guarantee they would pay $5 or so for the cover.
In conclusion you have -
1. Workers Compensation 'Insurance - to cover all
employees.
2. Public Risk or Personal Liability - to cover you or your
family for any acts of negligence.
3. Casual Worker Accident Insurance - to cover you
against injury if you are working for the club and are not
a paid employee.
I feel that this may clariPy the situation, if not, contact
your nearest reputable insurance company and they will
clarify the matter for you.
A THOUGHT
"Never miss an opportunity to make others happy.
Even if you have to leave them alone to do it".
CLUB FACILITIES
Once again, I stress the importance to club executives -
presidents, secretaries and committee etc, to do everything
in your power to entice visitors to attend and return to your
club.
Some clubs put on afternoon tea, consisting of dry
biscuits and a cup of tea and charge 50 cents or $1. whilst
other clubs put on a beautiful afternoon tea and also charge
50 cents or, in some cases, no oharge at all. I have heard
many shooters talking and saying "you should go to X club
-they put on a terriPic meal and make you feel welcome". I
have also heard shooters say "Don't go to X olub - they
charge 91 for a cup of tea and a couple of dry biscuits".
Another avenue that doesn't cost one cent - walk up to a
visitor with your right hand out, a smile on your face, and
say "Welcome, thanks for visiting our club, I hope you
enjoy your visit". This will make you feel good and I'l
guarantee the visitor will tell others how friendly you were
- try it and see.
STATE CARNIVAL
Only one month to the Trap Carnival at Griffith and what
a carnival it promises to be - all events have been
sponsored and, with this guarantee, the carnival will be a
carnival to remember. Griffith has ample accommodation
(the Citrus Motel is one of our sponsors) and a visit to a
winery is an excellent way to spend a "blotto" few hours.
the hospitality that "Simbo" and his boys can turnon- See
LET'S IMPBOVE THE:
STATUS OF OUR
GIIAMPIBNSIIIPS
At a recent Coaching Seminar, I was asked by a well
known Victorian Shooter, what could we do to improve the
standard of our shooting. The shooter was not referring to
the practical, physical and psychological side or our sport,
but was indicating that we should be shooting against
tougher competition.
I could not agree more, and for this to occur, we must all
try to compete with others whose standard is equal to or
much better than ourselves.
Overthe oast few vears. Clubs inour state amear ..
to hold
tw many Championships with the nett results, the shooter
is only a champion for ono day. Thrs lowers the valueof the
term CIIAMPION.
A few years ago. I rcmelnber acrendingn Club ~n Vlctoria
which was given a Commonwealth Championship. Fifteen
shooccrs attended, so the wlnrier (gwd luck to him), was
crowned Common~vealch Champion in that d~sciplinc for
one year.
Knowing the winner of the event personally, he did not
feel he had really earnt the title, because of the conditions
under which the title had been won.
To improve the image of Clay Target Shooting, we could
take aleafout of the bookof other sports disciplines, where
it is necessary to determine the best Competitor for the
vear. " -~
The car racing fraternitv set out certain races that
~
each driver must cumpcte ru toqualify for points to see who
is the best and most consistent driver for thc year. Our
sport determincs chetopshoocc~~for rhcycnr inaparticular
discipline on one performunce in orre locotion on one day. A
true indication? I believe not.
The question now arises, why can't Clay Target Shooting
use a similar system to determine its State Champion?
Let's say we want to find out who is the best Double
Barrel DTL Shooter in our State for 1986. This in my
opinion should not be determined by one performance in
one location on one day.
If each Zone still conducts its Zone Double Barrel
Championships at different periods throughout the year,
and points are allocated as to where the shooter finishedin
the event, by the end of the year, we would have determined
the most consistent and best shooter. This person is
certainly worthy of laying claim to the State Title.
Example:
If the N.W. Zone hold the Zone Double Barrel
Championship as a qualifying shoot for the State
Championship and the shooter finishes third, he or she
receives 8 points. The same shooter then attends the S.W.
Zone and finishes first, then he or she now receives 10
points; a total of 18 points. All eligible shoots are
aggregated towards the Championship.
To be eligible for the Title, the shooter must compete in 3
out of the 4 Zone Shoots. The highest points achiever for
the year is then the State Champion. By usingthis system,
Clay Target Shooting can only benefit.
Benefits of this System are:
(i) The true State Champion is determined.
(ii) Better competition between shooters.
(iii) A wiUingness by competitors to extend goals beyond
one event will be fostered.
(iv) . . A better standard of shooting between individuals will
occur.
(v) A greater awareness of our sport in the public sector
will be fostered.
(vi) Better interaction between Zones will occur.
(vii) Participating Clubs will benefit from experience and
support from other Clubs.
Some possible arguments against this System are:
(i) More work involved in co-ordinating the scores.
(ii) Why should we visit other Zones, they don't come to
,.a'?
(iii) Fuel is far too dear etc, plus a host of other excuses.
We can all generate if we want to.
But if we want the standardof shooting to improve as well
as individual performances to be upgraded, we must take
some sacrifices.
Let us all work together to give our top Titles the
prestige, credibility and honor they rightly deserve.
ILBOX
I read with great interest Len Bird's "Thoughts" on page
9, July '86 issue.
I believe that my club is going one step backwards by
introducing a 50 target of (25 Hcp & 25t 15m) for their
$1000 event during the June Carnival Shoot. Previously
this event was a 30 target Handicap.
When questioned on their wisdom I was told that the
backmarkers, "have to be given a change". Now the 'D' &
'C' grade shooters shoot 25 targets beside a person with 50
and 100 breakbadges all over them. This year we had
approximately 50 shooters and other years approximately
100 to our Carnival.
What are your thoughts?
PRESIDENT'S REPORT - 1986 '
Looking back on this past year. from an outsider's view.
it would seem to have been a period of steadiness without a
lot of noticeable steps being made - but as is usually the
case, a great amount of work has gone on behind the
scenes.
The most important step for Tasmanian shooters has
been the decision to stage the 1990 Trap Nationals at the
Tasmania Club. The meeting with the Division of
Recreation was successful in ensuring the State
Government's assistance with this venture. The success of
this venture depends upon the consolidated support of all
Tasmanian Clubs - in putting aside any differences and
joining forces to work as a team and not just as
individuals.
The second major project is the staging of an
Association backed tournament - run along similar lines
to the Darwin Gun Club. While this has only been agreed to
in principle. I feel confident it could easily become reality
as the general feeling seems to be in favor of such a
venture and, as previously stated, this type of event is the
best way the Association could use the funds it now has on
hand to benefit the full spectrum of Tasmanian shooters.
The State Carnival was once again a great success as has
been the case for the past few years - and once again due
to the sterling work carried out by members of this
Association.
The financial situation of this organisation has
continued to improve - mainly due to the Carnival's
success. The benefits gained by the running of such a
venture is proof that a sponsored shoot can be viewed as
being successfuly viable.
The professional way in which the duties of Treasurer
have been carried out by Kaye Woods has been, without
doubt, the major reason why the Tasmanian Clay Target
Association now finds itself in a very sound financial
position.
On the subject of Coaching- which we have all pondered
on and discussed for many hours - I believe that the
ability of the Coaching Director, Robbie Elmer, in this
important field is highly commendable and despite the fact
that Robbie's efforts are not always fully appreciated. I
hope that he continues in this position.
The one sad feature of this past year has been the
decision by Keith Wwds to terminate his involvement as
an official of the Association. Keith has been a major
contributor in this organisation for many years and it will
be strange for all not to see him at the meeting table. I
trust this Association can show its appreciation in some
way for Keith's oontribution towards keeping the Clay
Target movement going in Tasmania over the years.
On the plus side - it was great to see an old face return -
"D.R." (Don Taylor) has so much knowledge about
shooting, his presence is invaluable.
Reflecting on my three years as Pi-ssident of the
Tasmanian Clay Target Association makes me proud to
Page I2
have served in this office - the number of people I have
met and worked with during this time are too many to
name. I feel that this Association has stabilised its
operation during my term and has gained a reputation of
being well run and is respected by its own members and
other shooting bodies throughout Tasmania and the
mainland.
1 wish to thank all those who have helped me in so many
ways - with a special thanks to Kaye Woods. Without
Kaye's expertise and support the Association would not be
in the position it now finds itself. Thanks, Kaye!
Finally, I would like to wish all the Clubs and the
Association all the best Por the future and I feel the sound
base now established will lead to greater stability and
success in years to come.
AUSTRALIAN CLAY TARGET NEWS - SEPTEMBER 1986
49 YEARS A TRAP
SHOOTER
The Gippslander with the longest association with the
Australian Clay Target Association has died.
He was Les Mitchell, 73, a retired farmer of Trafalgar.
Started - ~ ~
in '37
ACTA historian Gcorge Blggs of Knoxfield recalls Les's
shooting trap u~ Blackburn in 1937.
Friend, Tup Pedersen, of Drouin, a former ACTA
president, said Les laid off shooting during the war, and
soon after he left Melbourne for an orchard at Trafalgar.
The pair met at the since defunct Moe gun olub in the
50s.
(Clubs at Sale, Yarram and Leongatha have also
disappeared).
~ ewas s a good single barrel shot.
But a Les Mitohell Second was a term for a frightfully
late shot.
As Les entered his 70s. and successes grew fewer, he
took up skeet.
His age and years of tracking a down-the-line shooting
made it difficult for him to achieve the zip that is required
COURTESY CORNER
The writer was involved in the following incident. A new
shwter at the olub, on hearing his name called for a squad,
picked up his gun, closed it, with cartidges iq the barrels,
and proceeded to walk across the grounds to the second
layout in use. He reached the walks before being accosted.
Luokily, the rounds were empties. The writer arrived at
the olub, and was asked to take the shooter 'under his
wing' post haste. Understandably, the'newchum' was a bit
tense (to say the least), and after a low-key, but
concentrated lecture on safety, unwound and started
breaking a few clays. He finished the round reasonably
conPident and composed. As we walked hack to the
oluhhouse, we were accosted, first of all, by the gentleman
who was going to 'see him right' at the shoot, and then by
another shooter who was all set to tear strips off the
returning novice for his earlier unsafe efforts.
This type of incident reflects no credit on the club, its
officials (who should have spotted the novice and allocated
a 'buddy' to look after him), the person responsible for
inviting the shwter (who should have advlsed squadding
officials if he was unable to look after the novice), or the
shooter who saw the safety breach, and did not
immediately attempt to correct it. Fair is fair, we must
encourage new shooters, and it is for the benefit of
everyone if we smother these shooters with attention from
the time they get to the club until the time that they
become safe and proficient. Let's get it right next time,
fellows!
DUCKS AND DRAKES DEPARTMENT
August the first was the beginning of the duck season,
the announcement coming a hare three weeks before the
opening, from the N.T.'s Conservation Commission. New
regulations have been promulgated (again!) regarding shot
size and gauge of guns (10 gauge being allowed for geese).
If you're not sure of the regulationg for this session, it
would be advisable to contact the nearest C.C. outlet for
details.
"THERE'S NO RULE LIKE AN OLD RULE"
CORNER
Top End shooter, Phil Crute has had in his possession for
many years, a copy of an 1860 British book on shotgun
shooting called 'The Dead Shot', writted by a shooter with
the pseudonym of 'Marksman'.
It covers the many facets of the gunning arts, giving a
wealth of detail on all topics. The style of writing, although
obviously of another age, is still engrossingly readable.
Chapters include those of selection of a gun (explaining
why a muzzleloader is a muoh harder hitting gun than a
breechloader - 'those new fangled ideas will never take
on'); duok, quail, snipe, grouse and partridge shooting('the
French partridge is a much inferior hird to the native
British bird'); seleoting a gundog; courtesy and etiquette;
etcetera.
The chapters that particularly took my attention were
those on safety and rules for live pigeon shooting. Their
wisdom has been untarnished by time. In recent months,
we have debated the 'Refusal Rule', sometimes
Page 14
i
illustration and Title Page of "The Dead Shot': an 1860 Shooting
Manual.
ferociously, and it was most refreshing to read what rules
our counterparts of a century ago shot under. Clay targets
were not mentioned, whether from not being in widespread
use, or from being beneath the author's dignity to
comment on. With live birds, a field stance was required.
On his mark, the shooter was not allowed to either sight
the gun, or to have the butt above his elbow. On refusal,
"miss-fires", etcetera, consider the follo~i~lg rules -
11. If the trap be pulled, not at the time of the signal, the
shooter shall have the option of calling "No Bird" and
refusing to shoot, but if he shoots, the bird will be
deemed a fair one, and scored for or against him as the
result may be.
12. If the bird does not rise immediately, after the trap is
pulled, the shooter is to have the option of calling "No
Bird", but if he shoots on its afterward rising, it will be
considered a fair bird. If he advances beyond the
footmarlr, shoots at the bird on the trap or on the
ground before it rises, it will be scored against him as a
"Last Bird" and this is whether he kills it or not.
14. If after avinn the siPnal "Pull". the ~un should be
found u6app;d. wiwitht a tube, or impkperly loaded:
or if the shooter, through negligence, is unable to fire.
and the bird flies away, it will be scored against him as
a - 1n.t ---- hid -- -.
15. But in the case of a miss-fire, through the cap or tube
not exploding, or failing to ignite the oh- or other
accidental oiroumstanoes not attributable to the
shooter's ne~liaence, - - he mav call "No Bird" and olaim
another.
16. In sinale hird matohes. if two or more birds be liberated
at thelaame time (whether acoidently or otherwise), the
shooter shall have the option of oalling "No Bird" and
refusing to shoot at either; hut if he shoots, the birds
will be scored for or against him, as the result may be.
There are many more rules, and I was atmok by these
oentury-and-a-quarter-ago-oompiled laws, and the
commonsense approach. fie shooter was the person who
decided whether he would shoot at any particular target or
tarmts. Officials were present at the hoots to determine
sp~tsmanship, observance of rules, legality of shot and
charges (which section was also reasonably detailed), but
the shooter was master of his destinv when it came to
choosing hrs targets. We seem to have Porgotton quite a lot
over the last 126 years.
HERE AND THERE
No news is good news, so it's good news from Jabiru,
you still out there???
DARWIN DIARY
After a working bee to finalise preparations for the
Annual Shoot, workers were treated to a couple of hundred
free targets. The catch was, that they were a mixture of
colors collected over a three month period on the grounds.
Fluorescents, magpies, yellows and whites intermingled
with the old standby, blacks. Also, to make things more
difficult, many had been warmed by "the hot tropic sun''
into shapes their maker had not intended. Strange to
remark, few targets found their way unbroken to the
ground, and no shooter was unduly surprised by the color
(or lack thereof) of the target. Point of the story is, that i'
you're aware that any color will emerge from the trap, it's
no big deal. And, if you get the wrung colored target in
competition, it shouldn't be a problem, either to break the
target, or to refuse to shoot at it. It's your choice.
The ladies are showing good form on practice days, with
Laney Grove and Vlasta Weis excelling.
Geraldton visitors Jack and Laurel Hartley are also
practising for the Annual Shoot. Many locals remember
their epic Double Rise shoot off three years ago, when
Laurel took the grade trophy away from Jack.
Phil Baldock is still scratching his head over the wiring
system used in a skeet layout at the club. After re-siting a
set of traps, test-firing gave shooters the choice of; singles
only, doubles only, or one trap firhg regularly with the
other one firing continuously. Anything for a chance, I
guess. After all, it's only skeet!
After a trip to Adelaide with wife Vera, long-time club
member Steve Lorman became ill, and is now convalescing
at his Stuart Park home. Here's for a speedy recovery,
Steve. We hope it's not too long before you're out on the
walks again.
Resident "Trenohologist" Dexter Barnes took another
trophy recently after a shoot off with Ken Selwood, both
scoring 48/50 in the event. The usually fiercely
competitive 'B' graders took fright at the 'A' graders'
scores. and left Joe Bell top of the pile with 35/50. Bob Fox.
shooting in 'C' grade (how did you manage that, Foxy?)
slauszhtered both his made and the 'B' maders with a fine
42/55. which Bob reccons should have &en 45/50 at least.
W.A.C.T.A. REPORT
The month of July has been very busy for attending
carnivals of many clubs. The quarterly W.A.C.T.A.
Executive meeting was held on June 28, 1986, and a new
venture was commenced whereby I invited the Presidents
of 3 clubs to our meeting as observers. I was pleased to
welcome David Adams, President of Albany Club, and
Grant Hyder, Vice President of Bunbury Club.
It was disappointing that Boyup Bmk Club was unable
to be present. Also we were without the presence of our
National President Roy Holtfreter, as he wss chairing B
meeting in Melbourne, prior to his trip to the United States
as manager of the Australian team.
This W.A.C.T.A. meeting was something of a marathon,
as we had a great deal of business to attend to - next years
State programmes to allocate, which includes two
Nationals, W.A.C.T.A. Carnival in October to organise.
plus many lengthy reports to receive.
One report from Reg Wagland. Complex manager,
concered the sale of clay targets to clubs, and after six
months seems to be running well. I am pleased to see that
you are keeping our State Coaching Director, Murray
Alexander. verv busv. He tells me that he is barelv findine
time to do a& work. He has countrv coachike tri~i
you are doing.
Vice President John Fissioli is organising an I.S.U.
training squad with the help of John Harris as coach. If
you are interested in improving your skills in this type of
shooting, see either of those two, A. Forsherg, Bob
Thomson, Vince Marney, Lex Shipp or Joe Coci.
At the W.A.C.T.A. meeting I was proud to be wearing my
new State Blazer at last. It was a long wait, but well worth
it. These are now available as you are aware. Also jumpers
are now available, black with a yellow logo. The first 30
sold quickly and more are now on order.
On July 5 and 6.1 travelled to Leonora for their Carnival
which included two State events. I must congratulate Jim
Neve for winning the State Tower D/B Pts and Neil
Johnson for the State Walk Up. The weekend was a little
chilly to say the least, but with the help of some Scottish
Distillers some of the cold was kept at bay dong with a
great deal of hospitality from the local members, and a
very pleasant time was held by all.
President Ken Winters and his committee are to be
congratulated on a well run shoot, with a fine array of
trophies including some gold nuggets.
Next on to Narrogin on July 19 and 20, where again the
trophies (mostly sponsored) were of a very high order. I
was also impressed with the expertise of Ross Eckersley.
President and his committee in running a most successful
carnival. Also I must thank them all for the hos~italitv
shown - ~ ~ me - and the W.A.C.T.A. Secret-
