In early 1999, two streams <strong>of</strong> research <strong>in</strong> CIFOR flowed together<br />

to form what would become the <strong>Adaptive</strong> Collaborative Management<br />

Research programme. The first had its orig<strong>in</strong>s <strong>in</strong> research carried out on<br />

criteria and <strong>in</strong>dicators for susta<strong>in</strong>able forest <strong>management</strong>, which <strong>in</strong>evitably<br />

led to questions about adaptive <strong>management</strong>, collaboration, conflict and<br />

empowerment. The second arose from an exam<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> the livelihoods<br />

<strong>of</strong> local people <strong>in</strong> forest areas, and conservation areas <strong>in</strong> particular. Both<br />

<strong>of</strong> those streams are represented <strong>in</strong> this book, and we acknowledge their<br />

contributions to the research and th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g that <strong>in</strong>form these pages.<br />

Concepts like adaptive <strong>collaborative</strong> <strong>management</strong> (ACM) emerge over<br />

time, a process that <strong>in</strong> our case has been passionate and fulfill<strong>in</strong>g. All the<br />

authors <strong>of</strong> this book thank our colleagues Carol Colfer, Jack Ruitenbeek<br />

and Chimere Diaw, who acted, reflected and learnt with us as we clarified<br />

our th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g on ACM. Don Gilmour, Peter Frost and Irene Guijt added<br />

<strong>in</strong>tellectual sophistication to our th<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g and were <strong>in</strong>dispensable members<br />
