on Collective Action <strong>in</strong> eastern and southern Africa, based at ILRI <strong>in</strong><br />

Nairobi.<br />

Steve Rhee has worked over the past 15 years as a researcher and<br />

practitioner <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternational development to improve evidence-based policy<br />

and practice, particularly as it relates to natural resource <strong>management</strong>. He<br />

has worked with a range <strong>of</strong> stakeholders, from forest-dependent villagers<br />

<strong>in</strong> Borneo to <strong>in</strong>ternational donors, and has worked closely with CIFOR<br />

s<strong>in</strong>ce 1999. He has lived and worked <strong>in</strong> Indonesia, ma<strong>in</strong>land Southeast<br />

<strong>Asia</strong>, Timor Leste and Nepal. He received his doctorate from Yale,<br />

where his tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g focused on governance, trade and culture related to<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able development. He is currently an American Association for the<br />

Advancement <strong>of</strong> Science (AAAS) Science and Technology Policy Fellow<br />

at the U.S. Department <strong>of</strong> State.<br />

Made Sudana worked for CIFOR from 1999 to 2004, based <strong>in</strong> Mal<strong>in</strong>au<br />

Subprov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> East Kalimantan. He participated <strong>in</strong> the ACM project and<br />

has also worked <strong>in</strong> research about conflict and power among stakeholders<br />

related to <strong>community</strong> forestry, timber and m<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g companies, and local<br />

government <strong>in</strong> Mal<strong>in</strong>au and Manggarai Subprov<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>of</strong> East Nusa Tenggara.<br />

He currently works for the Indonesian-German Development Cooperation<br />

on Rural Water Supply <strong>in</strong> Sumba.<br />

Eva (L<strong>in</strong>i) Wollenberg is a social scientist with a longstand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

commitment to the empowerment <strong>of</strong> local communities. L<strong>in</strong>i received her<br />

Ph.D. from the University <strong>of</strong> California, Berkeley, and has subsequently<br />

worked with the Ford Foundation and as a senior scientist with CIFOR,<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g research <strong>in</strong> the tropical <strong>forests</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Asia</strong>, especially <strong>in</strong> Kalimantan<br />

(Borneo). She is a Senior Associate <strong>of</strong> CIFOR and currently Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Susta<strong>in</strong>able Agriculture at the University <strong>of</strong> Vermont, United States.
