BOWLS SA NEW MEMBERSHIP DRIVE
INCENTIVE SCHEME - CIRCULAR 41/2013
Congratulations to Bowls SA for introducing this
incentive scheme to encourage members to introduce
bowls to non-bowlers!
The Council of Bowls South Africa approved this
incentive scheme at the recent Annual General
Meeting. The reason for the introduction is twofold –
firstly to gain new first time bowlers to the sport and
secondly to offer, at least some relief to existing
members, who introduce new members to the sport.
Basic Idea : A member introduces a new (first time
bowler) member to a club. Provided that all procedures
are followed and the new member is fully paid up and
registered, the current member will not pay Bowls SA
Affiliation Fees the following year. Where a member
introduces more than one new member in a calendar
year he will only receive exemption once. However
should he once again introduce a new member the
following year he will naturally receive the exemption
the next year.
For full details see Bowls SA Circular 41/2013
BOWLS AWARENESS DAY
26 & 27 October 2013
Although this newsletter is only published long after the
annual National Bowls Awareness Day has been held,
clubs should continuously be striving to promote the
game of bowls and develop their players.
The dates 26 and 27 October 2013 formed part of the
BSA calendar and will become an annual event on Bowls
SA’s calendar in October.
TOURNAMENT - NATAL INLAND BA
The U19 invitations will be sent to districts during
November 2013. The Hosting NIBA Tournament
Committee is currently working hard to ensure that all
the necessary arrangements are in place.
VISITS TO DISTRICTS - RESCUE BOWLS
Regional workshops/ meetings were held in most
districts and will continue in the new season to
encourage districts and clubs to market the game of
bowls and to emphasize the importance of forming
Promotion and Development Committees at each club
and district.
The power point presentations regarding the State of
Bowls in South Africa were shown displaying some facts
and figures and outlining what can happen should we
not address the current declining membership.

It is therefore important for each district and each club
but more importantly for each MEMBER to assist with
promoting the game in order to attract new members.
BOWLS SA TRAILER
The BSA/Dept of Sport, NSCPD initiative and now very
successfully used bowls trailer. The trailer is
extensively used in the Northern Region and will soon
be travelling down to WP and Boland!
Southern Cape has their own trailer and will be branded
and equipped soon.
DISTRICT STANDING COMMITTEES
If your district still does not have a Promotion and
Development Committee it is time to ask WHY?
In her opening speech, Aloma Smith of the NSCPD,
welcomed all to this, the historically first mini inter
district under 19 development tournament. She
thanked Boland for hosting the event and both Trevor
Davis and Theo van Aswegen of Southern Cape who
initiated the tournament. Players would be competing
for the Envar Buys trophy (named after a young district
player who sadly passed away during the last national
U19 tournament in Klerksdorp).
She urged them to encourage friends in taking up the
sport and told them that they are the future of bowls
and the next generation of Protea Bowlers. She wished
the players good bowling and thanked all that made the
weekend possible.
District SC Committees: P&D
You only have to look at the districts where there is an
increase in membership to know that something is
being done in such a district. A district that sets an
example of an active Promotion and Development
group will ensure that clubs will follow and appoint
either a person or group of people to look after their
own club.
We urge clubs within the districts to promote the game
of bowls and to develop the skills of the players and
that of your members into the various branches of the
sport, whether it is coaching, umpiring or working with
the youngsters or any new group of interested players,
your business league might be a good starting point.
Why wait till it is too late!
Bowls SA have requested all districts to ensure
that the NSCPD receives the necessary
information regarding the district committee for
Development and Promotion.
Theo van Aswegen of Southern Cape.
What a wonderful time for youngsters that were
cheering and enjoying the bowls. It was wonderful to
see the Border district joining in and willing to travel to
the tournament. The hope was expressed that other
districts within their regions will follow this example.
The next one has already been organised for all the
districts within the bigger Cape region!
FEEDBACK BOLAND
OEFENGROEP BREDASDORP
Joggie Snyman berig vanaf Bredasdorp
Op Dinsdae en Donderdae was daar hard geoefen deur
ongeveer 34 O/19's by die Bredasdorp Rolbalklub om
voor te berei vir oefenwedstryde wat vroeg in Augustus
op Bonnievale plaasgevind het. Die spelers, sowel as
onderwysers, het net so lekker saam geoefen!

ONDER 19 SPELERS – 11 AUGUSTUS
Theuns Coetzee berig vanaf Bonnievale
One of the Districts that are certainly at the forefront of
development, Boland, shared one of these stories which
were also published in the Breederiver Gazette.
Die naweek van 11 Augustus het kinders vanaf
Bredasdorp, Riversdal, Swellendam, Bonnievale, Ceres
afrigtingstyd was voordat spanne ingedeel was en twee
uitspeel sessies gehou was. Hierdie dag was ter
betrek in 'n interskole toernooi.
BOWLS INTRODUCTION
The Game of Bowls is being introduced to new players
and learners throughout the country by enthusiastic
and dedicated bowlers on a continuous base. A word of
thanks to all of you as your dedication and involvement
does not go un noticed and we can therefore be sharing
these success stories.
During the past year learners from the Robertson Logos
Christian School took part in some practice sessions at
the local bowling club. The enthusiasm was such that
the school decided to include bowls in their annual inter
hostel sport championships.
On 27 August the first Robertson inter hostel BOWLS
championship took place. The group of eager
youngsters were between grade R up to and older than
grade 7. After some 13 games overall winner
Bruwerhuis, won 15 +4 against that of Barryhuis 11 -4.
The learners so enjoyed this that most of them have
indicated that they would like to continue to play bowls.
The Robertson Bowling Club has arranged to continue
with the practice sessions.
Well done to all involved in creating this opportunity and
involving young talent! Hope to see some positive and further
results of our future young bowlers!
Further reading!
Please take time out to read some of the articles in
other newsletters, especially those aimed at change in
bowls, development, young people taking up bowls
and the marketing of the game.
One such article appears in the latest Boland District
newsletter, Raakskoot/Toucher which refers to the
change that is required to allow youngsters in at our
clubs and onto our greens. The reader is shown a
graphic of the number of learners per club and
participation of such learners.

PLAYING BOWLS AS A FAMILY
At the Ceres Bowling Club one family, the play bowls
together, they enjoy it and do well thereby showing
that the sport is indeed for all!
The Mostert family, mom Charmaine, dad Pieter and
children Tiaan (13) and Angelique (16) enjoy rolling up
and practising together.
Charmaine was the first to start playing in 2004. She
used to watch her dad playing at the Tulbagh Bowling
Club. Husband and dad, Pieter, started playing bowls 6
months later after Charmaine invited him to an open
day at the Ceres Bowling Club. Both their children,
Angelique and Tiaan grew up watching bowls every
weekend.
Charmaine and Pieter both served on the Ceres Bowling
Club Management for 6 years and played a key role in
obtaining and using Lotto funds for the club. Pieter
served as a greenkeeper. Charmaine served as both a
coach and development officer at the club and started
the club newsletter, the Ceres Green.
Charmaine also serves on the Boland Standing
Committee for Coaching and has been elected for the
2013/2014 season on the Standing Committee for
Development.
The family has also received various accolades at club
level and in the Boland District. Both Pieter and
Charmaine have represented Boland. Both Tiaan and
Angelique are development players. Tiaan were
selected for the under 19 squad in 2012 and was the
skip for the Boland Under 19 team during April
2013. Angelique were selected to play in her first
under 19 competition at the Mini Inter Districts
that were held during September in Bonnievale.
YOUNGSTER
OPENS WP BOWLS
SEASON
Pictured above:
Family Mostert - Tiaan, Pieter, Charmaine and
Angelique from Ceres Bowling Club.
Bowls is played for enjoyment during the off-season but
during the bowls season more tactical shots are
practiced. Like all young people, Tiaan loves the driving
shots! The whole family enjoys the competitive side of
the sport as well as the social side. It is easy to make
friends and it does not matter where you play, there is
always a familiar face. As a family they have been
involved in all aspects of bowls already. Charmaine has
a great passion for the sport of bowls. At every
opportunity she gets, she invites young and old to come
and play. She visited Gericke Primary School during
2012 and during an hour session using new age bowls,
40 children of the age group 12 years participated.
The Western Province
Bowls Season was
officially opened on
Saturday 5 October
2013.
The first bowl was
delivered by Jaco
Fourie, aged 10 from
the Kraaifontein Bowling
Club.
At the well represented 2014 Bowls opening held at the
WP Cricket Club, WP President, Doreen De Power and
her Management Committee welcomed the clubs,
officials and guests. The wish was expressed for a
successful season of bowls. The afternoon and the very
well planned function with MC, Sergio Martinengo, was
enjoyed by all.

HOW TO PROMOTE BOWLS
AND YOUR CLUB
By Chris Theron (Sables Bowls)
In spite of general consensus that Bowls desperately
need new members, we see very little if anything where
Bowls as a sport or our Clubs are actively promoted and
marketed. Most certainly all structures within Bowls
carry responsibility not to keep Bowls and the
wonderful benefits and excitement it offers as a secret.
To rely on current playing members to ‘recruit’ new
bowlers have failed dismally, hence the new initiative
from Bowls SA to offer any Bowler introducing a new
bowler, the waiving of their Bowl SA affiliation fees the
following year!
Although promotion of Bowls should come from the
top, both National and District, the main drive without a
doubt should come from each and every Club. A simple
inexpensive brochure or Z-folder (ideally sponsored by a
local printer) giving a short summary of what Bowls is all
about and the wonderful benefits if offers should be
compiled. The individual Club, what facilities it offers,
contact details, free coaching (hopefully the Club will
have a qualified coach), the inexpensiveness of Bowls,
the competitiveness, the social aspects and that it can
be enjoyed by the whole family, are just some of the
benefits that should be listed in such a brochure. If
there is a local newspaper a small advertisement
promoting Bowls and the Club should be considered to
support the brochure, the latter being distributed in
sport shops, Doctors’ rooms etc. Every public holiday
should be reserved for inviting non-bowlers to come
and try their hand at Bowls. These are normally the
days when the whole family is together. Clubs might
also consider offering reduced membership fees for the
first year to new Bowlers (those who have never played
before).
Vitally important is for Clubs, when they do promote
their Clubs and Bowls, to be internally geared and
structured to receive and welcome new bowlers. Do not
just expect them to join and find their own way in the
main stream of the Club. Where Clubs have set and
specific times (say Friday afternoons and/or Saturday
mornings) where any person responding to the
advertising can just arrive and there will be a suitably
qualified Club member to receive them for an
introduction and orientation to the Club as well as
coaching, have achieved great success. We cannot
depend on only one “Awareness Day” per year and
expect to stop the declining membership. If every Club
in SA start to actively promoted and market both Bowls
and our Clubs we will see positive results!
BC, one of the most successful Clubs in JBA boasting more
than 25 new members this year so far.
