9.32 The listed dwellings cover a range of
dates, a variety of architectural styles
and encompass a wealth of different
materials. No two listed properties
in Holdenhurst are the same. The
differences between buildings
illustrates how the village developed
organically over time as new buildings
were required.
The Old Forge, No. 14 Holdenhurst Village

9.33 A number of buildings such as The
Old School have been converted and
adapted to new uses over time. No.
14 Holdenhurst Village is also a good
example of adaptive reuse, now a
residential dwelling, it once contained
a forge in the adjoining outbuildings.
The property was also at one time the
village post office (closed in 1975).
9.34 The barn to the former Townsend
Cottages was originally listed along
with Townsend Cottages in the 1970s
(see photo on page 47). However,
following a review of the barn in 2012
instigated by English Heritage, they
removed it from the statutory list.
English Heritage noted that only the
walls survive of the original structure
and it had lost the group value with
the cottages (which were destroyed
by fire in the 1990s). English Heritage
did however note that the barn is a
poignant reminder of the rural building
traditions and agricultural history of
the area, and it is of local importance.
